RESUMO

Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) are among the most common human parasitic diseases. WHO estimates that over 2 billion people suffer from STH globally, including 4 million children in the WHO European Region. STH include ascariasis, trichuriasis, ancylostomiasis, necatoriasis, strongyloidiasis and toxocariasis. In 2001, the Fifty-fourth World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA54.19 with the goal to intensify efforts on control and elimination of soil-transmitted helminths. WHO’s global STH control plan for 2011–2020 aims to eliminate STH as a public health problem among school-aged children by 2020. In support for intensifying its implementation, WHO adopted a global strategy on water, sanitation and hygiene for accelerating and sustaining progress on neglected tropical diseases for 2015–2020. This document represents a regional framework for STH control and prevention. It provides an overview of the current STH situation, the scope and purpose of the work ahead, and strategic approaches to and measures against STH in the Region. It aims to assist countries in the development of national strategies and programmes based on their epidemiological, socioeconomic and environmental contexts.

Anopheles arabiensis breeding was studied during March 1999-June 2000 in New Halfa town. Of 3642 anopheline larvae collected, 3633 [99.75%] were A. arabiensis: 82.49%, 11.56%, 3.08% and 2.88% of the larvae were collected from shallow sunlit pools resulting from pipes leakages, rain pools, irrigation canals and man-made pools respectively. The overall mean density was 24.34 larvae/10 dips: 40.73 during the rainy season, 30.45 during irrigation and 13.10 in the dry season. Water for crop cultivation increased the relative humidity [P = 0.013] and both factors enhanced A. arabiensis breeding [P < 0.005]. There was no significant difference between the rainy and irrigation seasons. A. arabiensis breeding in this area has become perennial as a result of crop irrigation

This case-control study investigated the association between molar pregnancy and husband's work. In the analysis, cases were 30 women with complete mole and controls were 30 matched women with term pregnancies. The husbands of cases were more likely to have occupations involving physical work than non-physical work and this physical work more usually involved exposure to soil and dust. Among all occupations, the husbands of cases were more likely to have occupations which had exposure to soil and dust [P < 0.01]. Comparing all occupations that had exposure to soil and dust with all those who did not have this exposure [physical and non-physical] resulted in a statistically significant difference in the occurrence of molar pregnancy [P < 0.001]

To determine the prevalence of helminth eggs in public places and children's playgrounds, 112 soil samples were collected in 26 sites in Shiraz, southern Islamic Republic of Iran, during September 2002- September 2003. Toxocara cati ova were found in 7 [6.3%] samples, 2 had Ascaris ova, 3 had larvae morphologically similar to Strongyloides stercoralis. Coccidia oocysts were also observed in 4 samples. No contamination was observed during the dry season
