Introduction: Even though health-related quality of life (HRQL) and mood states are key indicators of the well-being of adolescents, their relationship has not been analyzed in students from Antioquia, Colombia. Objective: To determine HRQL and mood states in schoolchildren from Antioquia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,957 schoolchildren and adolescents aged between 9 and 20 years. Measurements of HRQL, anxiety, depression, hostility and happiness, physical activity, sedentary behavior, parental social support, and socioeconomic status were applied. Results: A high quality of life (HQL) was observed more frequently in male participants, students with parental support, physically active, and those belonging to medium and high socioeconomic status. HQL decreased 15% as their age increased by one year. Also, HQL was reduced when depression, anxiety, and sedentary behavior increased. Furthermore, depression and anxiety levels were higher in women, older students, as well as in those without parental control and with sedentary behavior. Conclusions: HRQL is associated with mood states, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and parental support. In contrast, mood states are related to gender, parental support, HQL, and sedentary lifestyle.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Modified Danzhi Xiaoyao San (MDXS) is an effective clinical prescription for depression in China, which was deprived of Danzhi Xiaoyao San in the Ming Dynasty. MDSX has significant implications for the development of new antidepressants, but its pharmacological mechanism has been rarely studied. AIM OF THE STUDY: To reveal the active components and molecular mechanism of MDXS in treating depression through network pharmacology and experimental verification in vivo and in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS was used to identify the chemical components in the MDXS freeze-dried powder, drug-containing serum, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Based on the analysis of prototype components in the CSF, the major constituents, potential therapeutic targets and possible pharmacological mechanisms of MDXS in treating depression were investigated using network pharmacological and molecular docking. Then corticosterone (CORT)-induced mice model of depression was established to investigate the antidepressant effects of MDXS. HT22 cells were cultured to verify the neuroprotective effects and core targets of the active components. RESULTS: There were 81 compounds in MDXS freeze-dried powder, 36 prototype components in serum, and 13 prototype components in CSF were identified, respectively. Network pharmacology analysis showed that these 13 prototype components in the CSF shared 190 common targets with depression, which were mainly enriched in MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. PPI analysis suggested that AKT1 and MAPK1 (ERK1/2) were the core targets. Molecular docking revealed that azelaic acid (AA), senkyunolide A (SA), atractylenolide III (ATIII), and tokinolide B (TB) had the highest binding energy with AKT1 and MAPK1. Animal experiments verified that MDXS could reverse CORT-induced depression-like behaviors, improve synaptic plasticity, alleviate neuronal injury in hippocampal CA3 regions, and up-regulate the protein expression of p-ERK1/2 and p-AKT. In HT22 cells, azelaic acid, senkyunolide A, and atractylenolide III significantly protected the cell injury caused by CORT, and up-regulated the protein levels of p-ERK1/2 and p-AKT. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that MDXS may exert antidepressant effects partially through azelaic acid, senkyunolide A, and atractylenolide III targeting ERK1/2 and AKT.

This cross-sectional study investigates the association between the main symptoms of Bipolar disorder (BD) and emotional regulation dif-ficulties in adaptive and maladaptive emotional regulation strategies (ERS). In addition, this study examines the possible mediating effects of ERS with dispositional mindfulnessand bipolar symptoms. Method.Twenty-four adults diagnosed with BD completed the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the Altman Mania Self-Assessment Scale (ARSM), the Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-R), and the Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Results. First, mul-tiple regression analysis showed how depression was significantly positively related to self-blame, whereas trait anxietywas positively associated with self-blame and catastrophizing. Second, the results of the mediation analy-sis have shown a significant mediation effect for the self-blamein the rela-tionship between mindfulnessand depression (a*b = -.15; BCI 95% [-.36, -.03]) and between mindfulnessand trait anxiety (a*b = -.09; BCI 95% [-.27, -.01]). Conclusions. Our results report the role of self-blame and catastrophiz-ing in BD and how these might significantly mediate between dispositional mindfulness and symptoms of depression and anxiety. These results suggest that a meditation practice focused on reducing catastrophizing and self-blame may be especially helpful for symptoms of depression and anxiety in bipolar patients.(AU)

Comorbidity is more the rule than the exception in mental health, specifically in the case of anxiety and depression. Transdiagnostic models studied the underlying processes to improve mental health treat-ment and understating. Objective:This systematic review searchs for evi-dence on transdiagnostic risk factors for anxiety and depression in the clin-ical population diagnosed with these psychopathological conditions, by an-alysing the different types or categories of factors identified. Methods:A sys-tematic review was registered in PROSPERO (registration number CRD42022370327) and was designed according to PRISMA-P guidelines. Two independent reviewers with field knowledge assessed the study quality to reduce bias. Results: Fifty-three articles were examined, and the transdi-agnostic variables were grouped into three categories: psychological, bio-logical, and sociocultural. Conclusions:The most studied category was that of psychological variables, especially cognitive processes, negative affect, and neuroticism, intolerance of uncertainty, anxiety sensitivity. Biological and sociocultural factors require more study to support their transdiagnos-tic approach.(AU)

Objective:The Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFS) is a brief self-report screening scale for fatigue that is used in Spain but has not been validated for the Spanish population. The aim of this study was to adapt and evalu-ate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the CFS (Sp-CFS). Method:The sample consisted of 3,671 participants (3,190 from the general population and 481 patients), aged 18 to 86 years (M=28.43; DT=12.71), 67.6% of whom were women. Psychometric properties of the scale were tested in a cross-sectional design using cross-validation (explora-tory and confirmatory factor analysis) and estimation of invariance (sex and clinical condition). Results:A four-factor model (low energy, sleep problems, concentration problems and subjective cognitive dysfunction) rather than an original two-factor model (physical and mental fatigue) pro-vided better indices of goodness of fit to the data. The internal consistencyand stability of the scale were excellent. Its convergent validity was sup-ported by its significant association with anxiety, depression, stress, and the positive and negative symptoms of the psychosis spectrum. The instru-ment did not show significant differences between sexes or clinical condi-tions, and it discriminated between the general population and the patients, with the latter obtaining significantly greater scores. Conclusions: Sp-CFS is a reliable and valid scale for measuring a transdiagnostic construct such as fatigue in Spanish general and clinical populations.(AU)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious health condition that adversely affects the mind and body. Current first-line treatment for PTSD tends to focus on the mind and overlook the impacts of trauma on the body. Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based adjunctive therapy for complex trauma and PTSD that uses a body-based approach to trauma healing. Although designed to be used in group or individual contexts, previous studies have focused only on TCTSY facilitated in groups. The present study examined the effects of one-to-one TCTSY (i.e., one participant receiving TCTSY services, not in a group TCTSY context) on anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress, interoception, substance use, and sleep over time. Using an observational approach, all certified TCTSY facilitators received the study invitation to share with clients who were enrolled in one-to-one TCTSY services. Ten clients participated in the study across four countries (women n = 8; mean age 44.80 ± 11.91; PTSD diagnosis n = 9). Clients completed Qualtrics surveys at TCTSY sessions in June-December 2022. Linear mixed-model analyses found that anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms, attention regulation, self-regulation, and body listening significantly improved over time. There were no significant changes in sleep or substance use from pre- to post-study. TCTSY is a somatic approach for managing trauma symptoms and enhancing interoceptive awareness. Extensions of the present study are warranted to further understand the effects of one-to-one TCTSY for trauma care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: There is a large treatment gap for mental health conditions in sub-Saharan Africa where most patients who receive any care do so from lay primary health care workers (PHCW). We sought to examine the experiences of PHCW who provide care for older people with depression in Nigerian primary health care (PHC) settings. METHODS: Qualitative study design. A total of 24 PHCW participated. Using in-depth key informant interviews (KIIs), we explored the views of 15 PHCW selected from 10 rural and urban PHCs in South-Western Nigeria. An additional focus group discussion comprising nine participants was also conducted to discuss emerging themes from KIIs. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three overall themes were identified: views about depression, treatment options, and community outreach implications. Participants perceived depression in older people as being characterised by a range of mood, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms which made clinical assessments particularly challenging. Common treatment options used by PHCW included general advice and counselling, as well as frequent need to prescribe mild analgesics, vitamins and occasional sedatives in line with patients' expectations. Antidepressants were rarely used even though PHCW are authorised. While home visits are part of their expected work schedule, PHCW rarely implemented these due to non-availability of transport facilities. Mobile technology was identified as a possible way of overcoming this constraint to providing community based mental healthcare for older people. CONCLUSION: PHCWs perceived that patients' poor cognitive performance, expectations to prescribe sedatives, analgesics and vitamins, as well as non-existence of community-based services were existing barriers to providing evidenced based continued care for older people with depression in the study settings.

RESUMO

Despite epidemiologic studies demonstrating the increased incidence of paternal postpartum depression, their emotional health is overlooked throughout their partner's pregnancy and postpartum period as postpartum depression has been traditionally construed as a disease of women. Traditional masculinity norms also result in a lack of recognition and barriers to the treatment of depression in men. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence and factors of paternal postpartum depression among fathers whose wives gave birth. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 7 to 17, 2023. The 288 sample size was estimated using a single population proportion formula and selected by random sampling technique. The data were exported from Kobo Toolbox and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Candidate variables were identified in bivariate at p < .25 for the multivariate analysis. A p < .05 and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) were used to determine the significance. A total of 280 partners participated making a 97.22% response rate. Paternal postpartum depression was 19.6%(95% confidence interval [CI] = [15.4%, 24.3%]). It was significantly associated with history of depression (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI = [1.7, 10.9]), unplanned pregnancy (AOR = 4.7, 95% CI = [1.9, 11.3]), alcohol consumption (AOR: 3.0, 95% CI = [1.3, 7.4]), infant sleeping problem (AOR: 3.0, 95% CI = [1.1, 8.9]), and mode of delivery (AOR: 3.0, 95% CI = [1.3, 7.6]). This study concluded that paternal postpartum depression was high. The researchers recommended the inclusion of men's mental health services like screening into women's postnatal health care.

RESUMO

Although it is generally recognized that sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and cognitive functions are related respectively, the main ambiguity comes from difficulties in determining their cause-effect relationships. The present study aimed to explore the longitudinal causation relationships among sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and cognitive functions in older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A total of 134 patients from 24 communities in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China with MCI were interviewed at baseline, while 124 of them were re-interviewed 2 months later, and 122 were re-interviewed 4 months later. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale were assessed in the interview. Cross-lagged models were tested to disentangle the relationships among sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and cognitive functions using structural equation modeling with latent variables on the four-mouth longitudinal data. The correlation coefficients between sleep quality and depressive symptoms were significant showing the stability across time points of assessment, while the correlation coefficient of cognitive function was not significant (r = 0.159, p > 0.05). The results of index of model fit indicated that the cross-lagged model was acceptable (CFI = 0.934, TLI = 0.899, RMSEA = 0.075, χ2/df = 1.684). The results of cross-lagged model analysis supported the complete mediating role of depressive symptoms in the association between sleep quality and cognitive functions, where worse sleep quality may lead to more severe depressive symptoms, which in turn leads to more severe cognitive decline. In Conclusion, sleep quality is significantly correlated with cognitive functions in patients with mild cognitive impairment, which association is fully mediated by depressive symptoms. Approaches addressing sleep quality and depressive symptoms are recommended and hold promise for the management of mild cognitive impairment.

RESUMO

Adolescence poses significant challenges for emotion regulation (ER) and is thus a critical phase in the emergence of various mental disorders, specifically internalising disorders such as anxiety and depression. Affective control, defined as the application of cognitive control in affective contexts, is crucial for effective ER. However, the relationship between ER and affective control is unclear. This study examined the predictive role of ER strategies and difficulties in affective control, measured as the congruency effect and error rate on an Emotional Stroop task (EST), in a sample of adolescents and young adults (aged 14-21, M = 17.28, 22% male). It was hypothesised that participants with internalising disorders would show higher congruency effects and error rates on the EST than healthy controls after a psychosocial stress induction, indicating lower affective control. Surprisingly, our findings revealed no significant differences in these measures between the groups. However, higher depression scores were associated with increased EST errors. While ER strategies and difficulties did not predict affective control, exploratory analyses unveiled associations between depression scores and ER strategy repertoire, perceived ER success and the ER strategy Acceptance. These findings underscore the importance of implicit ER facets, particularly perceived ER success and flexibility to change between applied strategies for adolescents and young adults with elevated depressive symptoms.

RESUMO

Poststroke aphasia hinders patients' emotional processing and social adaptation. This study estimated the risks of depression and related symptoms in patients developing or not developing aphasia after various types of stroke. Using data from the US Collaborative Network within the TriNetX Diamond Network, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults experiencing their first stroke between 2013 and 2022. Diagnoses were confirmed using corresponding International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Patients were stratified by poststroke aphasia status and stroke type, with propensity score matching performed to control for confounders. The primary outcome was depression within one year post-stroke; secondary outcomes included anxiety, fatigue, agitation, emotional impact, and insomnia. Each matched group comprised 12,333 patients. The risk of depression was significantly higher in patients with poststroke aphasia (hazard ratio: 1.728; 95% CI 1.464-2.038; p < 0.001), especially those with post-hemorrhagic-stroke aphasia (hazard ratio: 2.321; 95% CI 1.814-2.970; p < 0.001). Patients with poststroke aphasia also had higher risks of fatigue, agitation, and emotional impact. Anxiety and insomnia risks were higher in those with post-hemorrhagic-stroke aphasia. Poststroke aphasia, particularly post-hemorrhagic-stroke aphasia, may increase the risks of depression and associated symptoms, indicating the need for comprehensive psychiatric assessments.

RESUMO

Even during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic health professionals were facing mental health challenges. The aim of this study was to examine the mental health of doctors, nurses and other professional groups in Europe and to identify differences between the professional groups. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey in 8 European countries. We asked for demographic data, whether the participants were exposed to COVID-19 at work, for main information sources about the pandemic, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), and major stressors. A MANCOVA was carried out to find predictors of mental health among health care professionals. The sample (N = 1398) consisted of 237 physicians, 459 nurses, and 351 other healthcare professionals and 351 non-medical professionals with no direct involvement in patient care. The mean mental health of all groups was affected to a mild degree. Major predictors for depression and anxiety were the profession group with higher scores especially in the group of the nurses and working directly with COVID-patients. In the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the psychological burden on health professionals has remained high, with being nurse and working directly with COVID19 patients being particular risk factors for mental distress. We found as a main result that nurses scored significantly higher on depression and anxiety than practitioners.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) have higher rates of depression which is associated with lower adherence to medications, diet, and physical activity. Managing diabetes (DM) requires adherence to several of these self-management behaviors (SMB), and BCS have an increased risk of DM. We investigated whether depressive symptoms were associated with adherence to DM SMB in a cohort of BCS. METHODS: BCS with DM were surveyed semiannually for 2 years. Depression was assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Adherence to DM medication, diet, and physical activity was self-reported using the Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS), Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Assessment (SDSCA), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), respectively. Using generalized linear equation modeling, the association of depressive symptoms with nonadherence to SMB was assessed, adjusting for age, race, marital status, education level, and beliefs about cancer and DM risk. RESULTS: Among 244 BCS with DM, those who were nonadherent to medication, diet, and/or physical activity had higher depression scores (p < 0.01). In adjusted analyses, higher depression scores were independently associated with dietary (OR = 1.16, p < 0.001) and physical activity nonadherence (OR = 1.18, p < 0.001) but not with medication nonadherence. Concerns about medications was independently associated with medication nonadherence (OR = 1.17, p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: Higher depression scores are associated with nonadherence to DM SMB in this cohort of BCS. These findings highlight the importance of addressing depressive symptoms in BCS to help improve adherence to DM medications, diet, and physical activity.

RESUMO

Background: Physical and sexual violence against pregnant women have been associated with detrimental mental health outcomes for victims. Few studies have examined both positive (wellbeing) and negative (illbeing) mental health indicators in the same sample. Additionally, the literature assessing mental health based on different forms of violence is limited. Objective: To compare both wellbeing (life satisfaction) and illbeing (anxiety and depression) trajectories between non-victimized and victims of physical, sexual and both forms of violence that occurred during or shortly before pregnancy. Further, we analyse whether social support moderates these trajectories.Method: This longitudinal study is based on the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort, including the period from early pregnancy to toddlerhood (3 years). We compared wellbeing and illbeing trajectories of non-victims (n = 73,081), victims of physical abuse (n = 1076), sexual abuse (n = 683), and both forms of abuse (n = 107) using Growth Curve Modelling. Finally, social support was included as a moderator of wellbeing and illbeing trajectories. Results: Results indicated that victims scored systematically lower in wellbeing and higher in illbeing. Exposure to violence did not significantly change the wellbeing trajectory, pointing to similar developments in wellbeing among victims and non-victims for the considered period. On the other hand, different trajectories in illbeing occurred between victims and non-victims, as well as between victimized groups. Victims experienced greater change in illbeing scores, with a steeper decrease in illbeing compared to non-victims. Both victims and non-victims returned to respective baseline scores 3 years after birth. All women benefited from social support, but victims of physical abuse were particularly protected by social support. Conclusions: There is an alarming persistence of mental health problems in women exposed to violence during peripregnancy. Different forms of violence differentially impact women's mental health. Social support is beneficial among all pregnant women.

Victims of peripregnancy violence score systematic lower in wellbeing over time than non-victims. However, the wellbeing trajectories among victims and non-victims are similar. On the other hand, illbeing (anxiety and depression) trajectories differ for non-victims and victims of physical, sexual and both forms of violence. All women decreased their levels of illbeing from pregnancy to the first 6 months postpartum, but victims had a steeper decrease during this period compared to non-victims.All women benefited from social support, but victims of physical abuse were particularly protected by social support.

RESUMO

Interpersonal closeness has important health benefits; however, recent work suggests that in certain contexts, closeness can come at a cost. In the current study, curvilinear relations between mother-child closeness and health (e.g., depressive and anxiety symptoms and hair cortisol concentrations [HCC]) were tested. Our sample consisted of 117 mother (Mage = 36.86) and child (Mage = 73.07 months, 50.86% male) dyads. A quadratic relationship between maternal perceived closeness with their child and self-reported depressive and anxiety symptoms, along with overall hair cortisol output, was hypothesized. Path analysis suggested that the quadratic term was predictive of maternal cortisol (ß = 0.28, p = 0.001) and depression (ß = 0.23, p = 0.014), such that both high and low perceived closeness predict greater maternal depressive symptoms and HCCs as compared to moderate levels of closeness. Results are discussed in terms of parenting support and burnout.

RESUMO

Research and theory suggest an important role of neuroendocrine function in emotional development, particularly under conditions of elevated stress. We provide empirical data to clarify associations between alpha-amylase (AA) and cortisol as well as test the differential linkages among AA, cortisol, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress in children. Children recruited from a low-income elevated violence community (n = 100; mean age = 10, SD = 0.64; 79% Latino; 67% received free or reduced lunch) were assessed on diurnal levels of AA and cortisol along with assessments of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Elevated anxiety symptoms were associated with steeper linear slopes of AA with higher levels of AA in the morning but lower levels of AA in the evening. Depression was associated with differential cubic trajectories of AA when PTSSs were included in the model. Anxiety also predicted differential cubic diurnal trends in cortisol, such that greater anxiety symptoms were associated with relatively higher levels of cortisol in the evening. Again, depression symptoms when PTSS were included predicted diurnal cubic trends with elevated depression associated with lower awakening and midday cortisol that reversed to higher evening cortisol compared to youth with fewer self-reported depression symptoms.
