RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are available in various biological fluids and have highly heterogeneous sizes, origins, contents, and functions. Rapid enrichment of high-purity EVs remains crucial for enhancing research on EVs in tumors. In this work, we present a magnetic nanoparticle-based microfluidic platform (ExoCPR) for on-chip isolation, purification, and mild recovery of EVs from cell culture supernatant and plasma within 29 min. The ExoCPR chip integrates bubble-driven micromixers and immiscible filtration assisted by surface tension (IFAST) technology. The bubble-driven micromixer enhances the mixing between immunomagnetic beads and EVs, eliminating the need for manual pipetting or off-chip oscillatory incubation. The high-purity EVs were obtained after passing through the immiscible phase interface where hydrophilic or hydrophobic impurities nonspecifically bound to SIMI were removed. The ExoCPR chip had a capture efficiency of 75.8% and a release efficiency of 62.7% for model EVs. We also demonstrated the powerful performance of the ExoCPR in isolating EVs from biological samples (>90% purity). This chip was further employed in clinical plasma samples and showed that the number of GPC3-positive EVs isolated from hepatocellular carcinoma patients was significantly higher than that of healthy individuals. This ExoCPR chip may provide a promising tool for EV-based liquid biopsy and other fundamental research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Auricular reconstruction is one of the most complicated operations in plastic surgery and is more difficult for patients with a low hairline due to limited skin availability. In traditional operations, the skin of the mastoid area was used to cover the front of the ear scaffold, and the retroauricular fascia, combined with a free skin graft, was used to cover the back of the ear framework. This may cause problems such as inadequate skin coverage and affecting the shape of the reconstructed ear when the hairline is low. METHODS: Hemifacial microsomia patients with low hairline have little skin flap to perform the ear reconstruction, and we refined a single-stage ear reconstruction surgery to solve the problem. The temporoparietal fascia is used to cover the entire costal cartilage scaffold, and its surface is covered with a free split-thickness skin taken from the chest wall, thigh, and other parts. RESULTS: From December 2019 to December 2020, 12 patients with hemifacial microsomia underwent single-stage reconstruction with temporoparietal fascia. The duration of patient follow-up was 6 to 24 months. The application of this technique can solve the problem of insufficient available skin flap, complete the ear reconstruction through 1 operation, reduce the treatment cycle, achieve a good shape of the reconstructed ear, and the postoperative effect is satisfactory. CONCLUSION: According to the characteristics of the HFM patients with low hairline, we recommend this new, improved single-stage auricular reconstruction using the temporoparietal fascia for these patients. This method is a suitable choice for HFM patients with low hairline.Level of Evidence: Level-IV, Cases Study.

RESUMO

Extensive skin graft necrosis after auricle reconstruction surgery is a thorny problem for plastic surgeons. Four unilateral microtia patients were enrolled for extensive skin graft necrosis after ear elevation surgery. Early debridement and daily dressing changes were important for preoperative preparation. Surgical treatments involved local flaps and secondary split-thickness skin graft. After 3 to 12 months of follow-up, clear surface structures and obvious auricular sulcus were shown in all 4 patients. No cartilage exposure, skin necrosis, healing impairment, or other complications were found. We attribute the cause of extensive skin graft necrosis to subcutaneous hematoma. Local skin flaps and split-thickness skin grafting can be effective treatments for such situations. The use of temporoparietal fascial flap is unnecessary when poor graft survival is caused by subcutaneous hematoma.

RESUMO

This review offers a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, and ecological risk associated with six major categories of antibiotics found in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. Further exploration includes examining the correlation between antibiotic residual rates in the effluents and process parameters of urban WWTPs across the country. Lastly, a nationwide and urban cluster-specific evaluation of the ecological risk posed by antibiotics in WWTPs is conducted. The findings reveal that the average concentrations of antibiotics in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban WWTPs in China are 786.2 ng/L, 311.2 ng/L, and 186.8 µg/kg, respectively. Among the detected antibiotics, 42% exhibit moderate to high ecological risk in the effluent, with ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, azithromycin, and tetracycline posing moderate to high ecological risks in sludge. The current biological treatment processes in WWTPs demonstrate inefficacy in removing antibiotics. Hence, there is a pressing need to develop and integrate innovative technologies, such as advanced oxidation processes. This review aims to offer a more comprehensive understanding and identify priority antibiotics for control to effectively manage antibiotic pollution within WWTPs at both national and regional levels.

RESUMO

Objectives: Soft tissue expansion is one of the main methods for autologous cartilage auricular reconstruction. The aim of this study was to analyze the risk factors for cartilage exposure after this method and to describe a surgical method for this complication. Methods: From January 2018 to December 2020, 853 patients (908 sides) underwent auricular reconstruction with an expanded two-flap method at our center. Thirty-two patients experienced cartilage exposure postoperatively. These patients were set as the case group, and 1:1 matched sampling was performed among patients who did not have cartilage exposure. The matched sample of 32 cases was set as the control group. All 64 patients were evaluated according to the Orbit, Mandible, Ear, Nerve, and Soft tissue (OMENS) classification system to analyze the correlation between cartilage exposure and hemifacial microsomia (HFM) and OMENS subtypes. The complication was repaired with superficial temporal fascial flap combined with skin graft. Results: HFM might be a risk factor for scaffold cartilage exposure, and there was a significant correlation between cartilage exposure and orbital malformation, facial nerve dysplasia, and soft tissue developmental malformation. The use of a superficial temporal fascial flap combined with a split-thickness skin graft to repair the complication achieved satisfactory outcomes. Conclusions: There is a correlation between cartilage scaffold exposure and the severity of HFM. Temporoparietal fascial flap transfer combined with skin grafting proved to be an effective method for cartilage exposure.

RESUMO

Background: Question mark ear is a rare congenital deformity, mainly characterized the interruption of the natural continuity between the lower border of the helix and the earlobe. In severe cases, the earlobe may be absent. In addition, there may be protrusion and outward expansion of the upper part of the auricle, with partial or complete disappearance of the antihelix. This article aims to introduce a technique that combines autologous costal cartilage carving with auricular cartilage folding to achieve a stable and aesthetic auricle. Method: This study included 26 patients with sporadic question mark ear deformity who were treated at our clinical center from January 2020 to December 2022. Based on the different appearances of the lower part of the auricle, they were divided into 2 categories:11 cases showed a natural continuity interruption between the helix and the earlobe, while 15 cases showed the absence of the earlobe. All patients underwent corrective surgery using costal cartilage transplantation combined with the upper part of the auricular cartilage folding, performed by senior surgeons. Results: Question mark ear was effectively improved and with no significant rebound. The average follow-up period was 8.4 months (ranging from 6 to 12 months). A satisfaction survey showed that 23 patients (88%) were satisfied, 3 patients (12%) were partially satisfied, and no patients were dissatisfied. Most patients experienced temporary swelling after surgery, which resolved within 3 months to half a year. Conclusion: Autologous costal cartilage transplantation combined with folding of the auricular cartilage is an ideal surgical method to correct question mark ear.

RESUMO

HYPOTHESIS: Unilateral costal cartilage harvesting (UCCH) for auricle reconstruction in children tends to cause thoracic deformities. Therefore, our study aimed to develop a novel bilateral costal cartilage harvesting (BCCH) method to prevent and reduce thoracic deformities. METHODS: Patients with unilateral microtia who underwent either UCCH (n = 50) or BCCH (n = 46) were enrolled in this study. The grafts for the BCCH group were harvested from the 6th costal cartilage of the ipsilateral hemithorax and the 7th and 8th cartilage from the other hemithorax. Computed tomography and physical examination were performed to identify any physical deformities in the chest contours post-surgery. The cosmetic appearance of the thoracic scars post-surgery was evaluated using the Scar Cosmesis Assessment and Rating Scale (SCAR) and Visual Analogue Scales (VAS cosmetic). The numerical rating scale (NRS) was used to quantify the pain in donor sites. The reconstructed ears were assessed during the follow-up period. RESULT: None of the patients in the BCCH group developed thoracic deformities, while 16 patients within the UCCH group developed mild (n = 12) or severe (n = 4) thoracic deformities (p < 0.001). The SCAR (3.09 vs. 2.92, p = 0.580) and VAS scores (0.96 vs. 0.90, p = 0.813) did not differ significantly between the two groups. For both treatment arms, the NRS scores were highest on the first-day post-surgery and gradually dropped over the 10 days. No significant differences were found in the NRS scores and the aesthetic outcomes of the reconstructed ears between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The BCCH method effectively reduced the incidence of thoracic deformity at the donor site without increasing postoperative pain and cosmetic concerns for patients. It could be used clinically to improve patient outcomes of costal cartilage grafts. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 4 Laryngoscope, 134:3572-3580, 2024.

RESUMO

Long-term inflammation, including those induced by bacterial infections, contributes to the superfluous accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), further aggravating this condition, decreasing the local pH, and adversely affecting bone defect healing. Conventional drug delivery scaffold materials struggle to meet the demands of this complex and dynamic microenvironment. In this work, a smart gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel was synthesized for the dual delivery of proanthocyanidin and amikacin based on the unique pH and ROS responsiveness of boronate complexes. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrated the co-crosslinking of two boronate complexes with GelMA. The addition of the boronate complexes improved the mechanical properties, swelling ratio, degradation kinetics and antioxidative properties of the hydrogel. The hydrogel exhibited pH and ROS responses and a synergistic control over the drug release. Proanthocyanidin was responsively released to protect mouse osteoblast precursor cells from oxidative stress and promote their osteogenic differentiation. The hydrogel responded to pH changes and released sufficient amikacin in a timely manner, thereby exerting an efficient antimicrobial effect. Overall, the hydrogel delivery system exhibited a promising strategy for solving infectious and inflammatory problems in bone defects and promoting early-stage bone healing.

RESUMO

Sewage sludge is considered to be an important sink for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in wastewater treatment plants and the potential risks from sludge contaminated with PAHs during land application has attracted attention. To identify the priority PAHs for control and enhance their removal from sludge, the occurrence characteristics, removal efficiency, and risk assessment of PAHs in sewage sludges from across China were analyzed. Data collection was from 2001 to 2023. Results showed that 16 PAHs were widely detected in Chinese sewage sludge with total amounts (∑16PAHs) between 0.06 and 34.93 mg kg dw-1. Fossil fuel, coal, and biomass combustion are main anthropogenic sources of PAHs in China. In general, phenanthrene (PHE), anthracene (ANT), fluorescein (FL), chrysene (CHR), pyrene (PYR), and benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) are regarded as the main components and PAHs with 3-5 rings dominate (84.01%-91.53%) sewage sludge in China. Although aerobic composting and anaerobic treatment significantly improve ∑16PAHs removal, sludge stabilization treatment only reduced the risk by a small amount, especially for high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs. The benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DahA) are proposed as the priority control contaminants for sewage sludge in China because they have consistently high-risk quotient (RQ) values of 2.42-7.47, 1.28-3.16, 1.06-1.83 before and after sludge stabilization, respectively. More attention should be paid to BaA, BbF, benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), BaP, DahA, and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (IcdP) in Beijing; ANT, BaA, and BaP in Shanghai; and BaA and BaP in Guanghzou. Although the toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ) for PAHs met the limit concentration requirements of the national standard, the potential health risks due to long-term exposure to HMW PAHs cannot be ignored because the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was consistently in the risk threshold range (>1 × 10-6). Some suggestions on enhanced treatment approaches and land use standards are proposed to further alleviate the risk from HMW PAHs.

RESUMO

To achieve rapid detection of enramycin in feed, we employed the competitive inhibition method to develop a colloidal gold immunochromatographic test strip based on the anti-enramycin A monoclonal antibody (anti-Er.A-mAb). Colloidal gold probes were prepared with a laboratory-prepared high-purity anti-Er.A-mAb. The effects of pH, antibody titer, and antigen concentration (test line) on the test strip performance were investigated. The colloidal gold test strip prepared with 8 µL potassium carbonate addition, 4 µg/mL antibody, 1.0 mg/mL antigen (test line), and 3 µL gold-labeled antibody showed acceptable specificity and a low limit of detection. The test strip showed the detection limit of 25 ng/mL for enramycin A, with a linear range of 25-300 ng/mL. The experiments on the feed with positive sample addition proved that the test strip had good repeatability and was more sensitive than high-performance liquid chromatography, being applicable for the rapid detection of enramycin in large batches of feed samples.

RESUMO

Development of metal-free nanozymes has raised concern for their extensive applications in photocatalysis and sensing fields. As novel metal-free nanomaterials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have engendered intense interest in the construction of nanozymes due to their structural controllability and molecular functionality. The formation of the molecular arrangement by embedding orderly donor-acceptors (D-A) linked in the framework topology to modulate material properties for highly efficient enzyme mimicking activity is of importance but challenging. Here, a strong D-A type of COF was designed and synthesized by integrating electron donor units (pyrene) and electron acceptor units (phenanthroline), named Py-PD COF. Using experiments and theoretical calculations, the introduction of a phenanthroline ring endowed the Py-PD COF with a narrowed band gap, and efficient charge transfer and separation. Further, the Py-PD COF exhibited a superior light-responsive oxidase-mimicking characteristic under visible light irradiation, which could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and give the corresponding evolution of color. The nanoenzymatic activity of the Py-PD COF was light-regulated, which offers a fascinating advantage because of its high efficiency and spatial controllability. Based on previously mentioned characteristics, an "on-off" sensing platform for the colorimetric analysis of isoniazid (INH) could be constructed with a good linear relationship (2-100 µM) and a low limit of detection (1.26 µM). This research shows that not only is Py-PD COF an environmentally friendly compound for the colorimetric detection of INH, but it is also capable of providing the interesting D-A type COF-based material for designing an excellent nanozyme.

RESUMO

The pathological mechanism of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) is complex and involves tubular epithelial cell (TEC) death and immune cell activation. However, the interaction between tubular cell death and macrophage-mediated inflammation remains unclear. In this study, we uncovered that TEC ferroptosis was activated in SA-AKI. Increased levels of ferroptotic markers, including ferroptosis-related proteins, lipid peroxidation, malondialdehyde (MDA), 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and mitochondrial damage, were observed in the kidney tissue of cecum ligation and puncture (CLP) and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced SA-AKI mouse models, which were subsequently suppressed by Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1). In vitro experiments showed that Fer-1 inhibits LPS-induced mitochondrial damage, Fe2+ accumulation, and cytosolic ROS production. Moreover, it was found that TEC ferroptosis induced by promoted macrophage-inducible C-type lectin (Mincle) and its downstream expression and M1 polarization, which was mediated by the release of spliceosome-associated protein 130 (SAP130), an endogenous ligand of Mincle, from TEC. It was confirmed in vitro that the supernatant from LPS-stimulated TECs promoted Mincle expression and M1 polarization in macrophages. Further experiments revealed that M1 macrophages aggravated TEC ferroptosis, which was offset by neutralizing SAP130 or inhibiting Mincle expression. In addition, neutralizing the circulatory SAP130 blunted kidney ferroptosis and Mincle expression, as well as macrophage infiltration in the kidney of SA-AKI mice. In conclusion, the release of SAP130 from ferroptotic TECs promoted M1 macrophage polarization by triggering Mincle/syk/NF-κB signaling, and M1 macrophages, in turn, aggravated TEC ferroptosis.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Background: Normal saline solution (NSS) and Ringer's acetate solution (RAS) are commonly given to critically ill patients as a fundamental fluid therapy. However, the effect of RAS and NSS on sepsis patient outcomes remains unknown. Methods: We conducted a single-center prospective open-label parallel controlled trial to enroll adult patients (>18 years old) diagnosed with sepsis. Participants received either RAS or NSS for intravenous infusion for 5 days. The primary outcome was the incidence of major adverse kidney events within 28 days (MAKE28). Secondary outcomes included 30-/90-day mortality, acute kidney injury, and hyperchloremia. The patients were then reclassified as NSS-only, RAS-only, and RAS + NSS groups according to the type of fluid they had received before enrollment. Thereafter, a secondary post hoc analysis was performed. Results: Two hundred fifty-five septic patients were screened, and 143 patients (51.0% in RAS group and 49.0% in NSS group) were enrolled in the study. Each group received a median of 2 L of fluid administration during five interventional days. Of the patients, 39.3% had received 500 mL (500-1,000 mL) of balanced salt solutions (BSSs) before intensive care unit (ICU) admission. There was no statistical difference among the RAS and NSS group on the primary outcome MAKE28 in the initial analysis (23.3% vs. 20.0%; OR, 1.2 [0.6 to 2.2]; P = 0.69). MAKE28 was observed in 23.3% of RAS-only versus 27.3% of NSS-only group patients (0.82 [0.35-1.94], P = 0.65) in the secondary post hoc analysis. The patients in the NSS-only group had a longer invasive mechanical ventilation days and a trend toward the accumulation of serum chloride. Conclusion: This study observed no statistically significant difference on MAKE28 and secondary outcomes among sepsis patients receiving RAS and NSS. However, it is unclear whether the large amount of fluid resuscitation before ICU admission and carrier NSS narrowed the difference between BSSs and NSSs.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the evolutionary profile (including diversity, activity, and abundance) of retrotransposons (RTNs) with long terminal repeats (LTRs) in ten species of Tetraodontiformes. These species, Arothron firmamentum, Lagocephalus sceleratus, Pao palembangensis, Takifugu bimaculatus, Takifugu flavidus, Takifugu ocellatus, Takifugu rubripes, Tetraodon nigroviridis, Mola mola, and Thamnaconus septentrionalis, are known for having the smallest genomes among vertebrates. Data mining revealed a high diversity and wide distribution of LTR retrotransposons (LTR-RTNs) in these compact vertebrate genomes, with varying abundances among species. A total of 819 full-length LTR-RTN sequences were identified across these genomes, categorized into nine families belonging to four different superfamilies: ERV (Orthoretrovirinae and Epsilon retrovirus), Copia, BEL-PAO, and Gypsy (Gmr, Mag, V-clade, CsRN1, and Barthez). The Gypsy superfamily exhibited the highest diversity. LTR family distribution varied among species, with Takifugu bimaculatus, Takifugu flavidus, Takifugu ocellatus, and Takifugu rubripes having the highest richness of LTR families and sequences. Additionally, evidence of recent invasions was observed in specific tetraodontiform genomes, suggesting potential transposition activity. This study provides insights into the evolution of LTR retrotransposons in Tetraodontiformes, enhancing our understanding of their impact on the structure and evolution of host genomes.

RESUMO

This study investigated the impact of ultrasound treatment on dioscorin, the primary storage protein found in yam tubers. Three key factors, namely ultrasound power, duration, and frequency, were focused on. The research revealed that ultrasound-induced cavitation effects disrupted non-covalent bonds, resulting in a reduction in α-helix and ß-sheet contents, decreased thermal stability, and a decrease in the apparent hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of dioscorin. Additionally, previously hidden amino acid groups within the molecule became exposed on its surface, resulting in increased surface hydrophobicity (Ho) and zeta-potential. Under specific ultrasound conditions (200 W, 25 kHz, 30 min), Dh decreased while Ho increased, facilitating the adsorption of dioscorin molecules onto the oil-water interface. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations showed that at lower frequencies and pressures, the structural flexibility of dioscorin's main chain atoms increased, leading to more significant fluctuations between amino acid residues. This transformation improved dioscorin's emulsifying properties and its oil-water interface affinity.

RESUMO

Novel active DNA transposons, such as Spy transposons from the PHIS superfamily, are identified through bioinformatics in this study. The native transposases cgSpy and cvSpy displayed transposition activities of approximately 85% and 35% compared to the hyperactive piggyBac transposase (hyPB). The cgSpy transposon showed unique characteristics, including a lack of overproduction inhibition and reduced efficiency for insertion sizes between 3.1 to 8.5 kb. Integration preferences of cgSpy are found in genes and regulatory regions, making it suitable for genetic manipulation. Evaluation in T-cell engineering demonstrated that cgSpy-mediated chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) modification is comparable to the PB system, indicating its potential utility in cell therapy. This study unveils the promising application of the active native transposase, Spy, from Colletes gigas, as a valuable tool for genetic engineering, particularly in T-cell manipulation.

RESUMO

Renewable electricity powered electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) offers a valuable method to close the carbon cycle and reduce our overreliance on fossil fuels. However, high purity CO2 is usually required as feedstock, which potentially decreases the feasibility and economic viability of the process. Direct conversion of flue gas is an attractive option but is challenging due to the low CO2 concentration and the presence of O2 impurities. As a result, up to 99% of the applied current can be lost towards the undesired oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we show that acidic electrolyte can significantly suppress ORR on Cu, enabling generation of multicarbon products from simulated flue gas. Using a composite Cu and carbon supported single-atom Ni tandem electrocatalyst, we achieved a multicarbon Faradaic efficiency of 46.5% at 200 mA cm-2, which is ~20 times higher than bare Cu under alkaline conditions. We also demonstrate stable performance for 24 h with a multicarbon product full-cell energy efficiency of 14.6%. Strikingly, this result is comparable to previously reported acidic CO2R systems using pure CO2. Our findings demonstrate a potential pathway towards designing efficient electrolyzers for direct conversion of flue gas to value-added chemicals and fuels.

RESUMO

Tuning interfacial electric fields provides a powerful means to control electrocatalyst activity. Importantly, electric fields can modify adsorbate binding energies based on their polarizability and dipole moment, and hence operate independently of scaling relations that fundamentally limit performance. However, implementation of such a strategy remains challenging because typical methods modify the electric field non-uniformly and affects only a minority of active sites. Here we discover that uniformly tunable electric field modulation can be achieved using a model system of single-atom catalysts (SACs). These consist of M-N4 active sites hosted on a series of spherical carbon supports with varying degrees of nanocurvature. Using in-situ Raman spectroscopy with a Stark shift reporter, we demonstrate that a larger nanocurvature induces a stronger electric field. We show that this strategy is effective over a broad range of SAC systems and electrocatalytic reactions. For instance, Ni SACs with optimized nanocurvature achieved a high CO partial current density of ~400 mA cm-2 at >99% Faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction in acidic media.

RESUMO

Nutritional supplements have been extensively used as health interventions for the elderly. However, with the spread of COVID-19, no consensus exists on whether nutritional interventions could improve muscle mass and physical activity in community-dwelling older adults. To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the effects of different nutritional interventions on muscle mass and physical performance in the elderly, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, Elsevier, and Cochrane databases from their founding dates to December 2023. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3 software. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were considered, and the overall mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated. There were 33 studies comprising 3579 elderly persons meeting the inclusion criteria. Comprehensive analysis suggested that the intervention effect of fat-free mass (FFM), appendix skeletal muscle mass (ASMM), handgrip strength (HGS), gait speed, and short physical performance battery (SPPB) score was higher in the nutritional supplement group than in the control group. The results of subgroup analysis demonstrated that protein supplementation (SMD = 0.82, p < 0.0001) had an optimal effect on ASMM (SMD = 0.89, p < 0.0001) and FFM (MD = 2.09, p < 0.0001) in the elderly. Vitamin D supplementation (SMD = 0.52, p < 0.0001) had a marginal effect on ASMM, and energy supplementation (SMD = 0.39, p = 0.0005) had the lowest effect. Moreover, nutritional interventions had the most significant impact on HGS (MD = 1.06, p < 0.0001) and TUG (MD = 0.14, p < 0.0001) in individuals aged 65-75 years old, with positive effects on FFM (MD = 1.62, p < 0.0001) and HGS (MD = 0.82, p < 0.0001) when compared to healthy elderly individuals, and had greater effect on ASMM (SMD = 0.69, p < 0.0001) than on the elderly with sarcopenia. Nutritional supplements can enhance muscle mass and physical performance in the elderly, while protein is recommended for muscle function. The golden period for implementing nutritional interventions to improve muscle function is before the age of 75 years. However, the impact of nutritional interventions varies with age and population. Given the limited evidence on nutritional interventions, more detailed and high-quality studies are highly warranted in the future.
