ABSTRACT
The analysts who work with children in the latency period usually experience sensations of boredom and desperation in countertransference. These sensations might be due to the efforts of these children to maintain the transference as desexualized as possible; they have the tendency to resist by hiding hostile and aggressive aspects through masking them or activating the defense mechanism of reactive formation. Latency period has not been the focus of attention in the study of psychosexual development and thus it is not entirely understood.Counter-resistance proposes a silent agreement between patient and analyst, where both avoid certain topics. The technical difficulties in treatment of youngsters in this period might be due to resistance from both participants to deepen in the non-latent contents. The defense mechanisms typically activated by children in the latency period usually turn into resistance that obstructs the psychotherapeutic work, and as a consequence, raise counter-resistance in the therapist (AU)
