RESUMEN

To promptly and simply create highly crystalline S/C co-doped TiO2 (SC-TiO2) photocatalysts at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, we suggest a novel plasma-assisted sol-gel synthesis method. This method is a simultaneous synthetic process, in which an underwater plasma undergoes continuous reactions to generate high-energy atomic and molecular species that enable TiO2 to achieve crystallinity, a large surface area, and a heterogeneous structure within a few minutes. In particular, it was demonstrated that the heterogeneously structured TiO2 was formed by doping that sulfur and carbon replace O or Ti atoms in the TiO2 lattice depending on the composition of the synthesis solution during underwater plasma treatment. The resultant SC-TiO2 photocatalysts had narrowed bandgap energies and extended optical absorption scope into the visible range by inducing the intermediate states within bandgap due to generation of oxygen vacancies on the surface of TiO2 through synthesis, crystallization, and doping. Correspondingly, SC-TiO2 showed a significant degradation efficiency ([k] = 6.91 h-1) of tetracycline (TC, antibiotics) under solar light irradiation, up to approximately 4 times higher compared to commercial TiO2 ([k] = 1.68 h-1), resulting in great water purification. Therefore, we anticipate that this underwater discharge plasma system will prove to be an advantageous technique for producing heterostructural TiO2 photocatalysts with superior photocatalytic efficiency for environmental applications.

A carbonized interlayer effectively helps to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In this study, a simple and inexpensive carbon intermediate layer was fabricated using a traditional Korean paper called "hanji". This carbon interlayer has a fibrous porous structure, with a specific surface area of 91.82 m2 g-1 and a BJH adsorption average pore diameter of 26.63 nm. The prepared carbon interlayer was utilized as an intermediary layer in Li-S batteries to decrease the charge-transfer resistance and capture dissolved lithium polysulfides. The porous fiber-shaped carbon interlayer suppressed the migration of polysulfides produced during the electrochemical process. The carbon interlayer facilitates the adsorption of soluble lithium polysulfides, allowing for their re-utilization in subsequent cycles. Additionally, the carbon interlayer significantly reduces the polarization of the cell. This simple strategy results in a significant improvement in cycle performance. Consequently, the discharge capacity at 0.5 C after 150 cycles was confirmed to have improved by more than twofold, reaching 230 mAh g-1 for cells without the interlayer and 583 mAh g-1 for cells with the interlayer. This study demonstrates a simple method for improving the capacity of Li-S batteries by integrating a functional carbon interlayer.

In this study, we report on the electrochemical properties of a solid state lithium ion battery (LIB) using a poly (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME)-based solid polymer electrolyte (P-SPE). The LIB is prepared using a LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode and graphite anode material with P-SPE, and the kinetic properties of the lithium ions in the P-SPE are investigated. The synthesized P-SPE is shown to be suitable solid polymer electrolyte candidate for LIB applications. LFP and graphite are selected as electrode materials to validate their effectiveness in different battery cells with respect to their high energy density and inherent safety. The five-layer stacked 5 × 6 cm2 pouch-type LIB demonstrates a high capacity of 90 mAh (0.6 mAh/cm2) or more in the initial cycle, and it shows cycle stability with a capacity decrease of 20% over 500 cycles. We test the manufactured pouch-type full cells under extreme conditions (e. g., cutting, crushing and exposure of the battery cell to the atmosphere). LIBs using the developed P-SPE are promising solid polymer electrolyte candidates for wearable LIB as well as high energy LIB applications.

Leafy vegetables are widely consumed in South Korea, especially in the form of kimchi and namul (seasoned vegetables) and are used for wrapping meat. Therefore, the management of pesticide residues in leafy vegetables is very important. A total of 17,977 samples (49 leafy vegetables) were mainly collected in the largest production area of leafy vegetables (Gwangju Metropolitan City and Chonnam Province) in South Korea. They were analyzed within the government's monitoring programs (Gwangju Metropolitan City) of pesticide residues between 2005 and 2019. Pesticide residues were found in 2815 samples (15.7%), and 426 samples (2.4%) from among these exceeded the specified maximum residue limits (MRLs). Samples exceeding the MRLs were mostly detected in spinach, ssamchoo (brassica lee ssp. namai), crown daisy, lettuce, and perilla leaves. Azoxystrobin, dimethomorph, and procymidone were the most frequently detected pesticides. However, procymidone, diniconazole, and lufenuron were found to most frequently exceed the MRLs. The rate of MRLs exceeding has been managed below the average (2.4%) more recently than in the past in this area. Further, leafy vegetables with the most violations of the MRLs in our study in South Korea were not harmful to health by a risk assessment (the range of the hazard index was 0.001-7.6%).

Stochastic inhomogeneous oxidation is an inherent characteristic of copper (Cu), often hindering color tuning and bandgap engineering of oxides. Coherent control of the interface between metal and metal oxide remains unresolved. Coherent propagation of an oxidation front in single-crystal Cu thin film is demonstrated to achieve a full-color spectrum for Cu by precisely controlling its oxide-layer thickness. Grain-boundary-free and atomically flat films prepared by atomic-sputtering epitaxy allow tailoring of the oxide layer with an abrupt interface via heat treatment with a suppressed temperature gradient. Color tuning of nearly full-color red/green/blue indices is realized by precise control of the oxide-layer thickness; the samples cover ≈50.4% of the standard red/green/blue color space. The color of copper/copper oxide is realized by the reconstruction of the quantitative yield color from the oxide "pigment" (complex dielectric functions of Cu2 O) and light-layer interference (reflectance spectra obtained from the Fresnel equations) to produce structural color. Furthermore, laser-oxide lithography is demonstrated with micrometer-scale linewidth and depth through local phase transformation to oxides embedded in the metal, providing spacing necessary for semiconducting transport and optoelectronics functionality.

PURPOSE: To determine whether arthroscopic transosseous foveal repair of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) results in significant and clinically relevant improvement in clinical outcomes including pain and function with low complication and reoperation rates. METHODS: We reviewed studies investigating the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic transosseous foveal repair of the TFCC through MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Studies on TFCC repair performed with an open or capsular technique and combined with other procedures, such as ulnar shortening osteotomy and a wafer procedure, were excluded. Methodologic quality was assessed using the Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies score. Clinical outcomes were assessed using range of motion, grip strength, and patient-reported outcomes. Clinically relevant improvement was determined using the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). RESULTS: A total of 443 unique studies were identified, of which 7 (131 patients) met the inclusion criteria. The mean age ranged from 27 to 37 years, and the mean follow-up period ranged from 23.5 to 31.1 months. The grip strength (as a percentage) increased after foveal repair of the TFCC in all studies (mean difference range, 11.8% to 22.3%). All studies also reported an improvement in the visual analog scale score (mean difference range, -9.8 to -1.88); Modified Mayo Wrist Score (mean difference range, 10.5 to 27); and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score (mean difference range, -51.8 to -24.48). Considering clinically relevant improvements based on the MCID, 4 of 5 studies reporting the visual analog scale score showed improvements in this score (MCID, 2) and all studies reporting the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score showed improvements in this score (MCID, 10). Most complications recovered without any treatment, and 3 patients (2.29%) needed a reoperation. CONCLUSIONS: Arthroscopic transosseous foveal repair of the TFCC resulted in improvements in grip strength and functional outcomes with low complication and reoperation rates. However, the evidence for which technique produces better clinical outcomes remains limited. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, systematic review of Level III and IV studies.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of MRI in identifying ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), radial collateral ligament (RCL), and volar plate (VP) injuries of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) of the thumb by comparing with diagnostic arthroscopy. METHODS: A total of 56 consecutive patients (56 thumbs) who underwent arthroscopy of MCPJ of thumb were enrolled. MRI findings reviewed by consensus reading of two blinded radiologists were compared with arthroscopic examination. Statistical data, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, were analyzed. Additionally, the performance characteristics between 3.0-tesla (39 thumbs) and 1.5-tesla (17 thumbs) MRI and acute (≤4 weeks after injury) and chronic (>4 weeks) injuries were compared. RESULTS: Of the 56 thumbs, 38 thumbs (67.9%) showed complete correspondence between MRI and arthroscopic findings. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of MRI for detecting UCL injuries were 78.8%, 87.0%, and 82.1%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of MRI for detecting RCL injuries were 85.7%, 91.4%, and 85.7%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of MRI for detecting VP injuries were 89.5%, 89.2%, and 81.0%, respectively. 3.0-tesla MRI showed higher correspondence with arthroscopic observation (76.9%) than 1.5-tesla MRI (47.1%) (p = 0.028). For acute injuries, 78.4% showed complete correspondence between MRI and arthroscopic findings, whereas 47.4% with chronic injuries revealed complete agreement (p = 0.019). CONCLUSION: Overall, MRI is moderately effective in evaluating ligamentous lesions around MCPJ of thumb, but MRI is more sensitive in diagnosing acute injuries. Furthermore, 3.0-tesla MRI can provide results with better accuracy for diagnosing ligamentous lesions around MCPJ of thumb. However, the sensitivity and the specificity are not applicable to all ligament injuries, but only the severe one which would agree for surgical options.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes following an arthroscopic-assisted reduction and volar plating (AR-VP) surgery through pronator quadratus (PQ) preservation for treating intra-articular distal radius fractures (IA-DRFs) and to assess prognostic factors that affect functional outcomes. Methods: Between March 2014 and February 2017, 54 patients who had intra-articular DRF and underwent AR-VP through the PQ preservation technique and completed 1-year follow-up were enrolled. Patients were divided into the satisfactory group (excellent and good results) and an unsatisfactory group (fair and poor results) based on the modified Mayo Wrist Scoring System (MMWS) scored at 1-year follow-up to determinate prognostic factors that affected clinical outcomes. Patients' demographics, clinical outcome measures (VAS, DASH, PRWE, etc.), and pre-and post-operative radiographic parameters were analyzed. Results: The outcomes according to MMWS were 10 excellent, 22 good, 14 fair, and 8 poor. A univariate analysis showed a significant difference between the groups (p < .05) for all radiographic parameters, sex, and the presence of an intra-articular comminution. In the multivariate analysis, female gender, presence of an intra-articular comminution, and difference of palmar articular tilt compared to uninjured wrist (> 20.1°) at trauma were considered as significant poor prognostic factors of functional outcome. Conclusions: AR-VP surgery through PQ preservation for intra-articular DRFs has reliable clinical and radiological outcomes. However, female gender, presence of an intra-articular comminution, and difference of palmar articular tilt compared to the uninjured wrist (> 20.1°) at initial injury were considered poor prognostic factors for AR-VP through PQ preservation for intra-articular DRF.

For reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive and CD44 receptor-mediated delivery of photosensitizers, chlorin e6 (ce6) tetramer was synthesized using tetra acid (TA) via selenocystamine linkages and then conjugated with hyaluronic acid (HA) (abbreviated as HAseseCe6TA). HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers were fabricated by dialysis procedure. HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers showed spherical morphology with small particle sizes less than 100 nm and monomodal pattern. When H2O2 was added, size distribution was changed to multimodal pattern and morphological observation showed disintegration of nanophotosensitizers, indicating that HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers have ROS sensitivity. Furthermore, H2O2 addition resulted in acceleration of Ce6 release from HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers. In vitro cell culture study, HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers increase Ce6 uptake ratio, ROS production efficiency, and photodynamic therapy efficacy in both B16F10 cells and CT26 cells. Especially, CD44-receptor blocking of cancer cells by pretreatment of HA showed that fluorescence intensity in B16F10 cells was significantly decreased while fluorescence intensity in CT26 cells was not significantly changed, indicating that HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers can be delivered by CD44 receptor-mediated pathway. In vivo animal tumor xenograft study, HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers was selectively delivered to B16F10 tumor rather than CT26 tumor. These results indicated that HAseseCe6TA nanophotosensitizers have ROS sensitivity and have CD44 receptor-recognition properties.

We aimed to determine whether dorsoulnar incision elevating radial flap and immobilization for the treatment of de Quervain disease have an advantage over simple midline incision and early mobilization, respectively, in terms of tendon subluxation and clinical outcomes. Forty-six patients with de Quervain disease were randomly divided into 2 groups (midline incision vs dorsoulnar incision) and 2 subgroups (immobilization vs early mobilization). Subluxation of intracompartmental tendons was measured in dynamic wrist positions at 12 and 24 weeks using ultrasonography. The DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) and visual analog scale scores and grip and pinch strengths were evaluated. At 24 weeks, the tendons were displaced voloradially in wrist volar flexion (1.25 mm in midline incision vs 0.36 mm in dorsoulnar incision, P = 0.001), whereas the tendons were displaced dorsoulnarly in wrist extension (0.95 mm in midline incision vs 1.78 mm in dorsoulnar incision, P = 0.041). There were no significant differences in tendon displacement between early mobilization and immobilization groups. Clinical outcome measures showed no variation between the groups, and no significant correlation occurred with tendon subluxation. Dorsoulnar incision and postoperative immobilization do not have advantage over midline incision and early mobilization, respectively. However, tendon subluxation after release of the first dorsal compartment for de Quervain disease does not affect clinical outcomes.

RESUMEN

Arthroscopic reduction with osteosynthesis using bone grafting has become a successful alternative to open techniques for the treatment of chronically unstable scaphoid nonunions. Several studies have demonstrated that arthroscopic techniques are safe and reproducible in addition to causing less soft tissue damage and providing promising short- and mid-term results. However, these techniques have limitations in restoring normal carpal alignment, especially in patients with unstable scaphoid nonunion and carpal collapse deformities, although this does not affect the recovery of clinical function. Therefore, the practical goal of arthroscopic technique should be kept in mind when treating unstable scaphoid nonunions.

High-aspect ratio ß-Ga2O3 nanorods consisting of prism-like crystals were formed using gallium oxyhydroxide and ammonia hydroxide via a hydrothermal synthesis followed by the subsequent calcination process. The formation of high-aspect ratio ß-Ga2O3 nanorods was attributed to the oriented attachment mechanism that was present during the hydrothermal synthesis. A field-effect transistor was fabricated using the high-aspect ratio ß-Ga2O3 nanorod, and it exhibited the typical charge transfer properties of an n-type semiconductor. This facile approach to forming high-aspect ratio nanorods without any surfactants or additives can broaden the science of ß-Ga2O3 and expedite the integration of one-dimensional ß-Ga2O3 into future electronics, sensors, and optoelectronics.

BACKGROUND: Thickened synovial plicae in the radiocapitellar joint have been reported as a cause of lateral elbow pain. However, few reports regarding diagnosis based on detailed physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are available. The aims of this study were to characterize the clinical manifestations of this syndrome and to investigate the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic surgery. METHODS: We analyzed 20 patients who received a diagnosis of plica syndrome and underwent arthroscopic débridement between 2006 and 2011. The diagnosis was based on physical examination and MRI findings. Elbow symptoms were assessed using a visual analog scale for pain; the Mayo Elbow Performance Index; and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score at a minimum of 2 years after surgery. The thickness of plicae on MRI was compared with the normal data in the literature. RESULTS: Plicae were located on the anterior side in 1 patient, on the posterior side in 15, and on both sides in 4. Radiocapitellar joint tenderness and pain with terminal extension were observed in 65% of patients. MRI showed enlarged plicae consistent with intraoperative findings. The mean plica thickness on MRI was 3.7 ± 1.0 mm, which was significantly thicker than the normal value. The mean lengths (mediolateral length, 9.4 ± 1.6 mm; anteroposterior length, 8.2 ± 1.7 mm) were also greater than the normal values. The visual analog scale score for pain decreased from 6.3 to 1.0 after surgery. The Mayo Elbow Performance Index and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scores improved from 66 to 89 and from 26 to 14, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Specific findings of the physical examination and MRI provide clues for the diagnosis of plica syndrome. Painful symptoms were successfully relieved after arthroscopic débridement.

We aimed to inspect bowstringing after percutaneous and open release of the A1 pulley for trigger digits and its influence on hand function. Sixty-two patients with a resistant trigger digit were randomized to undergo either open release or percutaneous release of the A1 pulley. We quantified bowstringing of the digit using ultrasonography preoperatively and at 12 and 24 weeks after surgery. Pain on a visual analog scale; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire; pinch power; and grip strength were assessed. Bowstringing was significantly increased at 12 weeks after surgery in both groups, and the mean value of the open release group was significantly greater than that of the percutaneous group (2.30 ± 0.58 mm vs 1.46 ± 0.51 mm, respectively; P = 0.035). However, the bowstringing was decreased at 24 weeks without showing significant difference between the 2 groups. The clinical outcomes of each cohort improved significantly, with no difference between the groups at final follow-up. No association was found between bowstringing and any clinical outcome measure. Bowstringing occurred by A1 pulley release with either the percutaneous or open technique does not affect clinical hand function in patients with trigger fingers.

RESUMEN

In this paper, it is first reported that gray hydrogenated TiO2 sphere photocatalysts (H-TiO2) with high reactivity to solar light are mass produced within a few minutes using an underwater discharge plasma modified sol-gel method at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. This plasma modified system is an easy one-step in-situ synthetic process and the crystallinity, hydrogenation, and spherical structure of H-TiO2 are achieved by the synergy effect between the continuous reaction of highly energetic atomic and molecular species generated from the underwater plasma and surface tension of water. The resultant H-TiO2 demonstrated high anatase/rutile bicrystallinity and extended optical absorption spectrum from the ultraviolet (UV) to visible range. Furthermore, various defects including oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl species on the TiO2 surface permitted the enhancement of the photocatalytic performance. It was demonstrated that H-TiO2 photocatalysts showed significant degradation efficiencies for reactive black 5 (RB 5), rhodamine B (Rho B), and phenol (Ph) under solar light irradiation, up to approximately 5 times higher than that of commercial anatase TiO2 (C-TiO2), which resulted in good water purification. Notably, it was also possible to cultivate HepG2 cells using such well-purified water (to degrees up to 76%), with minimal cytotoxicity. Considering all these results, we believe that this novel plasma technology is promising for important environmental applications.

RESUMEN

Knee dislocation following total knee replacement arthroplasty is a rare but serious complication. The incidence of dislocation following primary total knee arthroplasty with posterior stabilized implants ranges from 0.15 to 0.5%, and posterior dislocation after revision total knee arthroplasty is even rarer. Here, we report the case of a 76-year-old male who presented with posterior dislocation after posterior stabilized revision total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify which triple immunosuppressive protocols, currently used for vascularized composite allotransplantation in the clinic, will have the best effect on motor function recovery following nerve allograft reconstruction. METHODS: Eighty-eight Lewis rats underwent a 1-cm sciatic nerve allograft transplantation and skin graft from 44 Brown-Norway rats. Group I received 0.9% isotonic saline (control); Group II, 2 mg/kg FK506; Group III, 1 mg/kg FK506 with 15 mg/kg mycophenolate mofetil (MMF); and Group IV, 2 mg/kg FK506 with 30 mg/kg MMF and prednisone. Each group consisted of 11 rats. After 12 weeks, motor function recovery was evaluated with isometric tetanic force, muscle mass, ankle contracture angle, electrophysiology, and nerve histomorphometry. Adequacy of immunosuppression was monitored with the transplanted skin graft. All data are expressed as a percentage of the contralateral side. RESULTS: Isometric tetanic force showed significantly better functional recovery in all groups treated with immunosuppression compared to control. Within the immunosuppression groups no significant difference was found: 42.1 ± 6.4% (Group I), 56.1 ± 12.4% (Group II), 58.4 ± 10.7% (Group III), and 61.3 ± 11.2% (Group IV). Group IV was superior to all other groups regarding ankle contracture (P < .05) and electrophysiology (P < .001). Skin graft rejection occurred in 41 and 0% (Groups III and IV, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: FK506 significantly enhanced motor recovery after allograft reconstruction. This effect was comparable between combination treatment (low-dose FK506 and MMF) and triple therapy (high-dose FK506 and MMF plus prednisolone). However, triple therapy was more effective in suppressing skin rejection.

BACKGROUND: The authors modified the anterolateral approach for Holstein-Lewis humeral shaft fractures using a plating technique to achieve sufficient distal fixation by minimal splitting of the brachioradialis muscle to fix the most distal screws. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of our modified anterolateral approach for Holstein-Lewis humeral fractures and document clinical and functional results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2008 and 2014, 18 patients (mean age 35.4 years) with a Holstein-Lewis humeral shaft fracture who underwent open reduction and internal fixation with a plate and screws using the modified anterolateral approach and followed for a minimum of 12 months were included. Radiologic fracture configurations, number of distal cortical fixations, union rate, and time to union were analyzed. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Mayo elbow performance index system, range of elbow motion, and postoperative complications. RESULTS: Mean fracture length was 60.2 ± 10.2 mm (range 49.2-77.2) and mean distal cortical length was 41.4 ± 7.04 mm (range 22.8-59.6). Distal fragments were fixed at a minimum of six cortical points (range 6-8) in all cases using the modified anterolateral approach. Average time to union was 10.5 weeks (range 8-12 weeks). All cases of radial nerve palsy completely recovered within 3 months. Mean elbow range of motion at final follow-up was 3.2 degrees of flexion contracture (range 0-10) and 135.4 degrees of further flexion (range 120-140), and the average Mayo elbow performance score was 96.3 points (range 90-100). There were no non-union or metal failures. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained indicate that the modified anterolateral approach is a safe and easy accessible method that provides sufficient distal osseous fixation for Holstein-Lewis humeral shaft fractures without serious complications. The modified anterolateral approach for plate osteosynthesis appears to be one of the most available options for the treatment of Holstein-Lewis humeral fractures. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers (PET-Fs) were coated with microporous organic networks (MONs) by the Sonogashira coupling of tetra(4-ethynylphenyl)methane with 1,4-diiodobenzene. Ni was deposited on the PET-F@MON via electroless deposition. Interestingly, although Ni on the PET-F showed a sharp decrease in conductivity in repeated bending tests, the PET-F@MON@Ni showed excellent retention of conductivity. We suggest that thin MON layers play roles of an efficient binder for Ni attachment to fibers and a structural buffer for the relaxation of bending strain. The positive effect of MON was supported by scanning electron microscopy studies of the PET-F@Ni or PET-F@MON@Ni retrieved after 2000 bending numbers. Although Ni on the PET-F showed severe detachment after bending tests, PET-F@MON@Ni retained the original morphologies. The pouch cells of lithium-ion batteries fabricated using PET-F@MON@Ni as the current collectors showed excellent performance against bending.
