RESUMEN
Herein, we present a novel and efficient method for the synthesis of two new polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1 and 2, through the electrocyclization-dehydrogenation of diradicaloids. The proposed oxidative electrocyclization via intermediate diradicaloids is monitored by electron paramagnetic resonance and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Interestingly, 1 exhibits chirality because of its inherent helical skeleton, and 2 features long-wavelength absorption and near-infrared emission properties due to its extended π-conjugation.
RESUMEN
Macrocyclic arenes represent one of the most important and intensively investigated entities in supramolecular chemistry. However, research on the redox activities of macrocyclic arenes, especially their isolable and crystalline polyradical analogues, has been rarely reported. Here, we present the synthesis, redox activity, and application of methylene-bridged macrocyclic phenothiazines, where polyradical cations are successfully isolated and unambiguously characterized for the first time. This research provides an effective method for preparing polyradical macrocycles, which expands the scope of investigation into macrocyclic arenes and their potential applications.

Polyradical cages are of great interest because they show very fascinating physical and chemical properties, but many challenges remain, especially for their synthesis and characterization. Herein, we present the synthesis of a polyradical cation cage 14â + through post-synthetic oxidation of a redox-active phenothiazine-based Pd2L4-type coordination cage 1. It's worth noting that 1 exhibits excellent reversible electrochemical and chemical redox activity due to the introduction of a bulky 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenyl substituent. The generation of 14â + through reversible electrochemical oxidation is investigated by in situ UV/Vis-NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemistry. Meanwhile, chemical oxidation of 1 can also produce 14â + which can be reversibly reduced back to the original cage 1, and the process is monitored by EPR and NMR spectroscopies. Eventually, we succeed in the isolation and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 14â +, whose electronic structure and conformation are distinct to original 1. The magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between the four phenothiazine radical cations in 14â +. We believe that our study including the facile synthesis methodology and in situ spectroelectrochemistry will shed some light on the synthesis and characterization of novel polyradical systems, opening more perspectives for developing functional supramolecular cages.
RESUMEN
In this study, we designed and synthesized three conformation-adaptive Pd2L4- and Pd3L6-type coordination cages based on three dihydrophenazine-based ligands with different lengths. Interestingly, the shorter ligands L1 and L2 self-assembled into Pd2L4-type coordination cages while the longer ligand L3 formed Pd3L6-type one, mainly driven by the anion template effect. All coordination cages were confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their structural conformations underwent great changes compared with those of their corresponding ligands. Moreover, the conformational changes also significantly affected their photophysical and electrochemical properties which were distinct from their parent ligands.

The development of multimode photopatterning systems based on supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) is considerably attractive in supramolecular chemistry and materials science, because SCCs can serve as promising platforms for the incorporation of multiple functional building blocks. Herein, we report a light-responsive liquid-crystalline metallacycle that is constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly. By exploiting its fascinating liquid crystal features, bright emission properties, and facile photocyclization capability, a unique system with spatially-controlled fluorescence-resonance energy transfer (FRET) is built through the introduction of a photochromic spiropyran derivative, which led to the realization of the first example of a liquid-crystalline metallacycle for orthogonal photopatterning in three-modes, namely holography, fluorescence, and photochromism.
RESUMEN
In this work, a facile and versatile strategy for the synthesis of contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) starting from the functionalized pentacene was established. A series of novel PAHs 1-4 and their derivatives were synthesized through a simple two-step synthesis procedure involving an intramolecular reductive Friedel-Crafts cyclization of four newly synthesized pentacene aldehydes 5-8 as a key step. All the molecules were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied in detail. Interestingly, the most striking feature of 1-4 is their highly contorted carbon structures and the accompanying helical chirality. In particular, the optical resolution of 2 was successfully achieved by chiral-phase HPLC, and the enantiomers were characterized by circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopy. Despite the highly nonplanar conformations, these contorted PAHs exhibited emissive properties with moderate-to-good fluorescence quantum yields, implying the potential utility of this series PAHs as high-quality organic laser dyes. By using a self-assembly method with the help of epoxy resin, a bottle microlaser based on 3 a was successfully illustrated with a lasing wavelength of 567.8â nm at a threshold of 0.3â mJ/cm2 . We believe that this work will shed light on the chemical versatility of pentacene and its derivatives in the construction of novel functionalized PAHs.

Tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with near-ideal bandgap still lag behind the pure lead PSCs. Disordered heterojunctions caused by inhomogeneous Sn/Pb ratio in the binary perovskite film induce large recombination loss. Here, an Sn-Pb perovskite film is reported with homogeneous component and energy distribution by introducing hydrazine sulfate (HS) in Sn perovskite precursor. HS can form hydrogen bond network and coordinate with FASnI3 thus no longer bond with Pb2+ , which reduces the crystallization rate of tin perovskite to the level of lead analog. The strong bonding between SO4 2- and Sn2+ can also suppress its oxidation. As a result, the Sn-Pb PSCs with HS exhibit a significantly improved VOC of 0.91 V along with a high efficiency of 23.17%. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bond interaction network, strong bonding between Sn2+ and sulfate ion also improve the thermal, storage, and air stability of resulting devices.

Two-dimensional metallacycles and three-dimensional metallacages constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly have attracted much attention because they exhibit unique structures and properties and are highly efficient to synthesize. Introduction of switching into supramolecular chemistry systems is a popular strategy, as switching can endow systems with reversible features that are triggered by different stimuli. Through this strategy, novel switchable metallacycles and metallacages were generated, which can be reversibly switched into different stable states with distinct characteristics by external stimuli. Switchable metallacycles and metallacages exhibit versatile structures and reversible properties and are inherently dynamic and respond to artificial signals; thus, these structures have many promising applications in a wide range of fields, such as drug delivery, data processing, pollutant removal, switchable catalysis, smart functional materials, etc. This review focuses on the design of switchable metallacycles and metallacages, their switching behaviours and mechanisms triggered by external stimuli, and the corresponding structural changes and resultant properties and functions.
RESUMEN
A quadrupolar compound Pyr-BA with two pyrrole-type nitrogen atoms doped externally was prepared in this work. In high contrast with other π ionic radicals, its cationic radical Pyr-BAâ + undergoes unusual symmetry-broken charge separation (SB-CS), generating the mixed valence complex of Pyr-BA+1-q â â â Pyr-BA+1+q , where q is the degree of charge transfer. Variable-temperature (VT) single-crystal analysis, absorption and EPR experiments all confirmed that aggregation and lower temperature would help to facilitate this SB-CS process. Gibbs energy calculations and gauge-including magnetically induced current simulation both validate that, for Pyr-BAâ + , SB-CS behavior is more favorable than the conventional dimerization mode. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that shows solid single-crystal evidence for spontaneous SB-CS between identical ionic radicals. Such a unique phenomenon is of great significance both in terms of fundamental aspects and uncharted material science.

The 2,6-naphthoquinodimethane (2,6-NQDM) containing S-heterocyclic molecule 6-S was synthesized, and its dual open-shell diradical and dipolar characters were revealed via both experimental and theoretical studies. Unlike the shorter p-quinodimethane (p-QDM)-containing analogue 5-S, which possesses a closed-shell ground state (y0 = 0%) with small dipolar character, 6-S possesses enhanced dipolar character with a singlet diradical ground state (y0 = 23.3%) and a thermally accessible triplet excited state (ΔEST = -4.13 kcal/mol). Despite this, it displays good stability (t1/2 = 41days) under ambient air and light conditions due to its distinctive dipolar character and kinetic blocking of reactive sites.
RESUMEN
Camrelizumab is a novel programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor developed in China that exhibits good efficacy in several advanced cancer types, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, its utility as a neoadjuvant regimen in NSCLC remains unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to explore the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant camrelizumab plus chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced NSCLC. A total of 56 patients with stage IIIA/IIIB resectable NSCLC were analyzed in the present prospective observational study. Amongst the cohort, 31 patients underwent neoadjuvant camrelizumab (200 mg every 2 weeks) plus paclitaxel and carboplatin (PC) chemotherapy, while another 25 cases underwent neoadjuvant PC chemotherapy alone. The pathological response, disease-free survival (DFS) time, overall survival (OS) time and adverse events (AEs) were analyzed. The complete pathological response (25.8 vs. 8.3%; P=0.159) and major pathological response (MPR) (61.3 vs. 37.5%; P=0.080) rates were higher in the camrelizumab plus PC group compared with the findings in the PC group, although the results were not statistically significant. DFS time was significantly prolonged in the camrelizumab plus PC group compared with that in the PC group (P=0.030); however, there was no difference in OS time between these two groups (P=0.251). Following adjustment by multivariate analysis, the camrelizumab plus PC regimen versus the PC regimen alone was independently associated with higher MPR [odds ratio, 5.216; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.178-23.086; P=0.030], and favorable DFS [hazard ratio (HR), 0.055; 95% CI, 0.007-0.442; P=0.006] and OS (HR, 0.025; 95% CI, 0.002-0.416; P=0.010) times. The most common AEs of the neoadjuvant camrelizumab plus PC regimen were alopecia (51.6%), nausea and vomiting (45.2%), anemia (41.9%) and fatigue (41.9%), the majority of which occurred in patients with grade 1-2 disease. The present results indicated that neoadjuvant camrelizumab plus PC chemotherapy exhibited a superior pathological response and survival profile to PC chemotherapy alone, and was well tolerated in patients with locally advanced NSCLC.
RESUMEN
Herein we successfully developed a ring-fusion approach to extend the conjugation length of phenothiazines and synthesized a series of novel extended phenothiazines 1-5. The intriguing π-conjugation length-dependent photophysical and redox properties of 1-5, and their photocatalytic performance towards visible-light-driven oxidative coupling reactions of amines were systematically investigated. The results indicated that this series of extended phenothiazines exhibited continuous red shifts of light absorption with increasing numbers of fused rings. As compared with the conventional phenothiazine (PTZ), all the extended phenothiazines displayed reversible redox behavior and maintained a strong excited-state reduction potential as well. Consequently, 3, 4 and 5 with longer effective conjugation lengths could efficiently catalyze the oxidative coupling of amines to imines under visible-light irradiation; by comparison, the shorter 1, 2 and PTZ could only catalyze such reactions in the presence of UV light. Moreover, 3 showed superior catalytic performance which can result in better yields within a shorter reaction time, and in a broad substrate scope. Finally, a direct and efficient conversion of amines to imines under sunlight in an air atmosphere was successfully realized. We believe that our study including the new phenothiazine modification methodology and the newly developed extended phenothiazine-based photocatalysts will open up a new way to develop novel phenothiazine-based materials for optoelectronic and catalytic applications.
RESUMEN
Using bipolar redox-active molecules (BRMs) as active materials is a practical way to address electrolyte crossover and resultant unpredictable side reactions in redox-flow batteries. However, the development of BRMs is greatly hindered by difficulties in finding new molecules from limited redox-active moieties and in achieving high cell voltage to compete with existing flow battery chemistries. This study proposes a strategy for design of high-voltage BRMs using fused conjugation that regulates the redox potential of integrated redox-active moieties. As a demonstration, quaternary N and ketone redox moieties are used to construct a new BRM that shows a prominent voltage gap with good electrochemical stability. A symmetrical redox-flow cell based on this molecule exhibits a high voltage of 2.5 V and decent cycling stability. This study provides a general strategy for designing new BRMs that may enrich the cell chemistries of organic redox-flow batteries.

The success of nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) solar cells lies in their unique physical properties beyond the extended absorption and suitable energy levels. The current study investigates the morphology and photophysical behavior of PBDB-T donor blending with ITIC, 4TIC, and 6TIC acceptors. Single-crystal study shows that the π-π stacking and side-chain interaction dictate molecular assembly, which can be carried to blended films, forming a multi-length-scale morphology. Spontaneous carrier generation is seen in ITIC, 4TIC, and 6TIC neat films and their blended thin films using the PBDB-T donor, providing a new avenue of zero-energy-loss carrier formation. The molecular packing associated with specific contacts and geometry is key in influencing the photophysics, as demonstrated by the charge transfer and carrier lifetime results. The 2D layer of 6TIC facilitates the exciton-to-polaron conversion, and the largest photogenerated polaron yield is obtained. The new mechanism, together with the highly efficient blending region carrier generation, has the prospect of the fundamental advantage for NFA solar cells, from molecular assembly to thin-film morphology.

The precise synthesis of novel rotaxane-branched radical dendrimers Gn-TEMPO (n = 1-3) with up to 24 TEMPO radicals as termini was successfully achieved, from which nanoparticles with a good longitudinal relaxivity were further prepared, thus making them potential candidates as promising contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging.
RESUMEN
Although the multiple-component (MC) blend strategy has been frequently used as a very effective way to improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs), there is a strong need to understand the fundamental working mechanism and material selection rule for achieving optimal MC-OSCs. Here we present the 'dilution effect' as the mechanism for MC-OSCs, where two highly miscible components are molecularly intermixed. Contrary to the aggregation-induced non-radiative decay, the dilution effect enables higher luminescence quantum efficiencies and open-circuit voltages (VOC) in MC-OSCs via suppressed electron-vibration coupling. The continuously broadened bandgap together with reduced electron-vibration coupling also explains the composition-dependent VOC in ternary blends well. Moreover, we show that electrons can transfer between different acceptors, depending on the energy offset between them, which contributes to the largely unperturbed charge transport and high fill factors in MC-OSCs. The discovery of the dilution effect enables the demonstration of a high power conversion efficiency of 18.31% in an MC-OSC.
RESUMEN
Objective: A review argues that polo-like kinase 5 (PLK5) may be linked to unfavorable prognosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, which contradicts the discoveries from The Human Protein Atlas database (derived from TCGA analysis). This study intended to comprehensively confirm the association of PLK5 with clinical characteristics and prognosis in NSCLC patients. Methods: This two-center, retrospective, cohort study enrolled 210 NSCLC patients receiving surgical resection. PLK5 protein and mRNA were detected by immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR in tumor and nontumor tissues. Moreover, RNA FPKM data for 994 lung cancer patients were obtained from The Human Protein Atlas database. Results: PLK5 protein was decreased in tumor tissue compared to nontumor tissue (P < 0.001). Additionally, decreased PLK5 protein was linked with increased pathological grade (P = 0.002), lymph node metastasis presence (P = 0.001), elevated tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage (P = 0.003), and abnormal cancer antigen 125 (CA125) (P = 0.002). Meanwhile, low PLK5 protein was correlated with shortened disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.007) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0.038); further multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that low PLK5 protein independently predicted unfavorable DFS (hazard ratio = 0.573, P = 0.022). PLK5 mRNA was reduced in tumor tissue compared with nontumor tissue (P < 0.001); its decline was linked with enhanced pathological grade (P = 0.034), climbed TNM stage (P = 0.032), and abnormal CA125 (P = 0.002). Furthermore, low PLK5 mRNA was correlated with unfavorable DFS (P = 0.046). The Human Protein Atlas database also disclosed the link between low PLK5 mRNA and worse OS (P = 0.046). Conclusion: A PLK5 decrement reflects anabatic tumor burden and poor prognosis in NSCLC patients.

Organic diradicaloids usually display an open-shell singlet ground state with significant singlet diradical character (y0) which endow them with intriguing physiochemical properties and wide applications. In this study, we present the design of an open-shell nitrogen-centered diradicaloid which can reversibly respond to multiple stimuli and display the tunable diradical character and chemo-physical properties. 1a was successfully synthesized through a simple and high-yielding two-step synthetic strategy. Both experimental and calculated results indicated that 1a displayed an open-shell singlet ground state with small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔES-T = -2.311 kcal mol-1) and a modest diradical character (y0 = 0.60). Interestingly, 1a was demonstrated to undergo reversible Lewis acid-base reaction to form acid-base adducts, which was proven to effectively tune the ground-state electronic structures of 1a as well as its diradical character and spin density distributions. Based on this, we succeeded in devising a photoresponsive system based on 1a and a commercially available photoacid merocyanine (MEH). We believe that our studies including the molecular design methodology and the stimuli-responsive organic diradicaloid system will open up a new way to develop organic diradicaloids with tunable properties and even intelligent-responsive diradicaloid-based materials.

The purpose of this Perspective is to help students and researchers understand the development of supramolecular radical cages, and potentially to stimulate innovation and creativity and infuse new energy into the fields of traditional supramolecular chemistry and radical chemistry as well as supramolecular radical chemistry.
RESUMEN
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) consisting of organic radicals are of great interest because they have exhibited unique and intriguing optical, electronic, magnetic, and chemo-catalytic properties, and thus have demonstrated great potential applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices, and as catalysts. However, the preparation of MOFs bearing stable organic radicals is very challenging because most organic radicals are highly reactive and difficult to incorporate into the framework of MOFs. Herein we reported a post-synthetic modification strategy to prepare a novel MOF containing phenazine radical cations, which was used as heterogeneous catalyst for aza-Diels-Alder reaction. The zinc-based metal-organic framework Zn2 (PHZ)2 (dabco) (N) was successfully synthesized from 5,10-di(4-benzoic acid)-5,10-dihydrophenazine (PHZ), triethylene diamine (dabco) with Zn(NO3 )2 â 6H2 O by solvothermal method. The as-synthesized MOF N was partially oxidized by AgSbF6 to form MOF R containing â¼10% phenazine radical cation species. The resultant MOF R was found to keep the original crystal type of N and very persistent under ambient conditions. Consequently, MOF R was successfully employed in radical cation-catalyzed aza-Diels-Alder reactions with various imine substrates at room temperature with high reaction conversion. Moreover, heterogeneous catalyst MOF R was reusable up to five times without much loss of catalytic activity, demonstrating its excellent stability and recyclability. Therefore, the post-synthetic modification developed in this work is expected to become a versatile strategy to prepare radical-based MOFs for the application of heterogeneous catalysts in organic synthesis.
