RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is characterized by persistent or recurrent pruritic lesions that last more than 6 weeks. Patients with CSU may experience sleep disturbances, particularly due to itching. Biological rhythms (chronotypes) are categorized as morningness, intermediate, and eveningness types. This study evaluates the relationship between sleep quality, chronotype, and disease severity in CSU patients. METHODS: The study included 53 CSU patients and 50 healthy controls. A sociodemographic data form was completed, and the disease severity was determined utilizing the Urticaria Activity Score over 7 days (UAS7). The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scales as well as the Morningness-Eveningness Scale (MEQ) were applied to the participants. RESULTS: The CSU group had a significantly higher body mass index (BMI) than that of the healthy control group. In terms of sleep and chronotype scales, compared to the control group, the CSU group had higher ISI scores as well as subscale scores on the PSQI subscales, with the exception of habitual sleep efficiency and total PSQI scores. There was no difference between MEQ scores. In the correlation analysis, the UAS7 and PSQI total scores were found to be correlated, whereas in the logistic regression analysis the estimated relative risk of BMI and PSQI total score for CSU was found to be 1.13 and 1.45, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: When dealing with CSU patients, it is necessary to conduct a sleep quality assessment as part of a holistic evaluation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Acne vulgaris, a prevalent chronic condition among adolescents, significantly impacts patients' quality of life and self-esteem. Our aim was to investigate whether how adolescents perceive their family emotional atmosphere has an impact on their acne severity, quality of life, and self-esteem. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 118 patients with acne vulgaris who completed various assessments, including a sociodemographic data form, the Acne Quality of Life Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Shortened Level of Expressed Emotion Scale (SLEES) and, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The Global Acne Grading System is performed by an experienced dermatologist to determine the severity of acne. RESULTS: Out of 118 patients, 78 (66.1%) were female and 40 (33.9%) were male. The mean age of patients was 15.2 ± 1.3 years. There was a positive correlation between the severity of acne and the levels of perceived intrusiveness subscores of SLEES (P = .021, r = 0.212). Significant correlations were also observed among quality of life scores, anxiety and depression levels, lack of emotional support (LES) scores, and self-esteem levels. The initial linear regression analysis demonstrated that the level of LES subscores of SLEES and levels of anxiety and depression were predictors of self-esteem. In the second regression analysis, anxiety and depression levels were identified as significant predictors of quality of life. CONCLUSION: The perceived family emotional atmosphere may be an important factor in evaluating the severity of acne as well as the self-esteem and quality of life of adolescent patients with acne vulgaris.

RESUMO

Objective The present study investigates the relationship between psoriasis and diseases such as health anxiety, depression, and somatosensory amplification. Methods The participating patients (n=117, including 60 psoriasis patients and 57 controls) filled out the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SSAS), and Health Anxiety Inventory (HAI) questionnaires. Results The mean scores from SSAS, HAI, and BDI were significantly higher in the psoriasis group than in the control group (p<0.05 in all comparisons). When the group medians of BAI were evaluated, the differences were not statistically significant, although BAI medians were higher in the patient group. Furthermore, a moderate correlation was found between the involvement of specific areas (especially the scalp and face) and SSAS scores. Conclusion Patients with psoriasis score highly in depression, health anxiety, and somatosensory amplification, and there was a moderate correlation between specific body area involvement (especially the scalp and face) and SSAS score. The results of this study seem to indicate that psychiatric assessment and treatment approaches should be included in the treatment of such chronic skin diseases as psoriasis that follow a life-long remission and relapse pattern.

RESUMO

This study aimed to examine the relationship between acne severity and quality of life, insomnia, and chronotype. This study included 151 patients diagnosed with acne vulgaris, aged 18-30 years. A sociodemographic data form was completed by the clinician, and acne severity was evaluated using the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS). The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Acne Quality of Life Scale (AQLS), Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) were completed by the participants. There was a significant difference between the MEQ scores of the participants who were divided into three groups according to the severity of global acne, as mild, moderate, and severe. In the post hoc analysis, the MEQ scores of the patients with mild acne were determined to be significantly higher than the scores of the patients with moderate and severe acne. A statistically significant negative correlation was observed between the GAGS scores and the MEQ scores. In addition, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between the participants' ISI scores and AQLS scores. Considering the variables related to chronotype and sleep in the treatment planning for patients with acne vulgaris may be appropriate within the scope of integrative treatment.

RESUMO

Brain injury and stroke are leading causes of adult disability. Motor deficits are common problems, and their underlying pathological mechanisms remain poorly understood. The serotoninergic system is implicated in both functional recovery from and the occurrence of spasticity after injuries to the central nervous system. This study, which was conducted on rats, investigated the development of limb postural changes and their relationship to the expression of serotonin (5-HT) 2A and 2C receptors in the spinal cord in the 4 weeks after focal traumatic brain injury (TBI) to the right hindlimb sensorimotor cortex. The limb motor deficits were assessed by measuring gait pattern changes during walking and hindlimb postural asymmetry at different time intervals (3−28 days) after surgery. The expressions of the 5-HT2A and 2C receptors in the lumbar spinal cord were investigated using immunohistochemistry. The results showed that all the rats with TBI, independently of the duration of the interval, displayed postural asymmetry with flexion on the contralateral (left) side (>2 mm), while the sham-operated rats showed no apparent postural asymmetry. The TBI rats also had longer stride lengths during walking in both their hindlimbs and their forelimbs compared with the sham rats. For both the TBI and the sham rats, the hind-paw placement angles were larger on the contralateral side in some of the groups. Compared to the sham-operated rats, the 5-HT2A and 2C receptor expression did not significantly change on either side of the lumbar spinal cords of the TBI rats in any of the groups. These results suggest that focal TBI can induce motor deficits lasting a relatively long time, and that these deficits are not related to the expression of the 5-HT2A and 2C receptors in the spinal cord.

RESUMO

Abstract Lichen nitidus is an uncommon lichenoid dermatosis that could be defined as multiple, separated, shiny, pinpoint, pale to skin-colored papules. Palmoplantar lichen nitidus is a quite rare variant of lichen nitidus. It is hard to make a diagnosis of palmar lichen nitidus when there are no lesions elsewhere on the body. There are some dermoscopic features defined for both palmoplantar and non-palmoplantar lichen nitidus that might be useful to facilitate the diagnosis before histopathological examination. Herein, we report a case of a 24-year-old man diagnosed with isolated palmar lichen nitidus with dermoscopic features and histopathological confirmation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: High mobility group box- 1 (HMGB- 1) is a nuclear protein acting as a proinflammatory molecule. The serum HMGB- 1 levels were found elevated in chronic inflammatory diseases. In this cross-sectional study, serum HMGB- 1 levels in Behcet's disease (BD) patients and healthy controls (HC) were studied. Also, its association with disease activity scores and clinical findings were evaluated. METHODS: Ninety BD patients and 50 age-sex matched HC were included in the study. Disease activity scores were assessed by Behcet Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF) and Behcet Syndrome Activity Score (BSAS). Serum HMGB- 1 levels were measured using a commercial ELISA kit. A p value of < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: Serum HMGB- 1 levels were significantly higher in BD than in HC (43.26 pg/mL and 16.73 pg/mL; p < 0.001, respectively). Serum HMGB- 1 levels were statistically significantly associated with presence of erythema nodosum (EN) and genital ulcers in the last one month prior to recruitment (p = 0.041 and p < 0.001, respectively). BDCAF and BSAS scores were positively correlated with serum HMGB- 1 level ( p = 0.03 and p = 0.02, respectively). DISCUSSION: HMGB - 1 may play a role in the development of BD. Also, due to its positive correlation with disease activity indices, it can be used as a novel disease activity parameter in BD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease in which the cells and molecules of innate and adaptive immunity are involved in the pathogenesis. Aplastic anemia is a bone marrow deficiency syndrome that is characterized by an extreme reduction in the number of blood cells as a result of failure in hematopoiesis. Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a promising treatment for Aplastic Anemia and it is important to note that other comorbid diseases like psoriasis- since both have some common pathogenetic mechanisims- might achieve remission after treatment. CASE: We present a 12-years-old male patient who underwent bone marrow transplantation for aplastic anemia and his psoriasis vulgaris lesions completely regressed. The final follow-up visit on day 150 also revealed no sign of the pre-transplantation skin and scalp lesions. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first case of pediatric psoriasis together with aplastic anemia that achieved complete remission of psoriasis after bone marrow transplantation. Our case report needs to be supported by prospective studies involving larger patient populations.
