RESUMO

The signal intensities of CO2- radicals in teeth can be utilised as an individual indicator of the cumulative external dose for animals. To accurately determine the external dose, it is desirable to analyse the CO2- radical intensity and improve its detection limit. We recently reported a dose-response in the range of 0-200 mGy and estimated the absorbed dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in/around the related areas to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Herein, for further improvement of this method, we examined the electron spin resonance spectra of the teeth of these seven and an additional four macaques captured in Fukushima by applying two spectrum-decomposition algorithms.

A total of seven Japanese laboratories participated in an intercomparison study to estimate the dose given to tooth enamel samples, using the electron spin resonance method. Each of four of the participating laboratories prepared a set of tooth enamel samples, using the electron spin resonance method. Four of the participating laboratories each prepared a set of tooth enamel samples, consisting of seven standard aliquots irradiated from 100 to 2000 mGy and three samples with an 'unknown' dose between 140 and 960 mGy, were intended to eliminate bias from sample preparation. Although not all seven laboratories measured all four sets of samples, the major finding was that systematic biases in estimating doses may be caused by differences in laboratory measurements rather than by the enamel extracting procedures. When doses were averaged by measurements made by multiple laboratories, the averaged values were close to the actual values. Scattering in the intercepts in the standard dose response would be a serious problem in actual dosimetry where no background sample is available.

Atomic oxygen (AO) is one of the dominant components of the residual atmosphere in low Earth orbit. AO collides with spacecraft with a translational energy of 5 eV, forming nanoscale protrusions on polymeric materials. To clarify the influences of a polymer's chemical structure on the formation of AO-induced microstructures, this study investigated the size of free-volume holes and the layer thickness that interacted with AO for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The injection energies of positrons varied from 1.3 to 10 keV to adjust the injection depth (range) into the polymers (40 nm-1.6 µm). For the pristine films, the lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps, τ3) was longer in the order of PS, PP, and PE regardless of the injection energy of positrons, showing the different sizes of free-volume holes with radii of 0.29, 0.31, and 0.32 nm, respectively. The fraction of the decay component corresponding to o-Ps in all decay components (relative intensity of o-Ps, I3) was used to investigate the chemical change induced by AO exposure. The I3 values for the three polymers were decreased by AO exposure of (2-5) × 1018 atoms/cm2 or more at a depth of 40-48 nm, obtained by 1.3 keV positrons. This indicates that AO formed polar groups (i.e., an oxidized layer) on the polymer surfaces. The maximum depths of such chemical change for PE and PP were deeper than that for PS. The different sizes of free-volume holes would affect the diffusion or ballistic penetration of AO, resulting in the difference in the oxidized layers' thicknesses and surface morphologies.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry is one of the most powerful tools for radiation dose reconstruction. The detection limit of this technique using human teeth is reported to be 56 mGy or 67 mGy; however, the absorbed dose of Fukushima residents after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident was estimated to be lower than this detection limit. Our aim is to assess the absorbed radiation dose of children in Fukushima Prefecture after the accident; therefore, it is important to estimate the detection limit for their teeth. The detection limit for enamel of deciduous teeth of Japanese children separated by the mechanical method is estimated to be 115.0 mGy. The density separation method can effectively separate enamel from third molars of Japanese people. As we have collected thousands of teeth from children in Fukushima, the present technique may be useful to examine their external absorbed dose after the FNPP accident.

Particles containing alpha (α) nuclides were identified from sediment in stagnant water in the torus room of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station(FDiNPS)'s Unit 2 reactor. We analyzed uranium (U), which is the main component of nuclear fuel, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Other α-nuclides (plutonium [Pu], americium [Am], and curium [Cm]) were detected by alpha track detection and the morphology of particles with α-nuclides were analyzed by SEM-energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analysis. Several uranium-bearing particles ranging from sub-µm to several µm in size were identified by SEM observation. These particles contained zirconium (Zr) and other elements which constituted fuel cladding and structural materials. The 235U/238U isotope ratio in the solid fractions that included U particles was consistent with what was found for the nuclear fuel in the Unit 2 reactor. This indicated that the U of similar fuel composition had made finer. The α-nuclide-containing particles identified by alpha track analysis were several tens to several hundred µm in size. The EDX spectra showed that these particles mainly comprised iron (Fe). Since the amount of α-nuclide material was very small, Pu, Am, and Cm were adsorbed on the Fe particles. This study clarifies that the major morphologies of U and other α-nuclides in the sediment of stagnant water in the torus room of FDiNPS's Unit 2 reactor differed.

The Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident in March of 2011 released substantial amounts of radionuclides into the environment. We collected 4,957 deciduous teeth formed in children before the Fukushima accident to obtain precise control data for teeth formed after the accident. Radioactivity was measured using imaging plates (IP) and epidemiologically assessed using multivariate regression analysis. Additionally, we measured 90Sr, 137Cs, and natural radionuclides which might be present in teeth. Epidemiological studies of IP showed that the amount of radioactivity in teeth from Fukushima prefecture was similar to that from reference prefectures. We found that artificial radionuclides of 90Sr and 137Cs, which were believed to have originated from past nuclear disasters, and natural radionuclides including 40 K and daughter nuclides in the 238U and 232Th series contributed to the generation of radioactivity in teeth. We also found no evidence to suggest that radionuclides originating from the FNPP accident significantly contaminated pre-existing teeth. This is the first large-scale investigation of radioactivity and radionuclides in teeth. The present findings will be indispensable for future studies of teeth formed after the FNPP accident, which will fall out over the next several years and might be more contaminated with radionuclides.

Since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, we have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of racoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. The radioactivity of caesium-137 (137 Cs) was measured by gamma-ray spectrometry, and the measured radioactivity concentration was 300-6,630 Bq/kg in the Fukushima raccoons. Notably, normal spermatogenesis was observed in the seminiferous tubules of the testes, with the germinal epithelium composed of a spermatogenic cell lineage with no evident ultrastructural alterations; freeze-thawing sperm penetration ability was confirmed using the interspecific zona pellucida-free mouse oocytes IVF assays. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

90Sr specific activity in the teeth of young cattle that were abandoned in Kawauchi village and Okuma town located in the former evacuation areas of the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident were measured. Additionally, specific activity in contaminated surface soils sampled from the same area was measured. (1) All cattle teeth examined were contaminated with 90Sr. The specific activity, however, varied depending on the developmental stage of the teeth during the FNPP accident; teeth that had started development before the accident exhibited comparatively lower values, while teeth developed mainly after the accident showed higher values. (2) Values of 90Sr-specific activity in teeth formed after the FNPP accident were higher than those of the bulk soil but similar to those in the exchangeable fraction (water and CH3COONH4 soluble fractions) of the soil. The findings suggest that 90Sr was incorporated into the teeth during the process of development, and that 90Sr in the soluble and/or leachable fractions of the soil might migrate into teeth and contribute to the amount of 90Sr in the teeth. Thus, the concentration of 90Sr in teeth formed after the FNPP accident might reflect the extent of 90Sr pollution in the environment.

Here we determined the (90)Sr concentrations in the teeth of cattle abandoned in the evacuation area of the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident. (90)Sr activity concentrations in the teeth varied from 6-831 mBq (g Ca)(-1) and exhibited a positive relationship with the degree of radioactive contamination that the cattle experienced. Even within an individual animal, the specific activity of (90)Sr (Bq (g Sr)(-1)) varied depending on the development stage of the teeth during the FNPP accident: teeth that were early in development exhibited high (90)Sr specific activities, while teeth that were late in development exhibited low specific activities. These findings demonstrate that (90)Sr is incorporated into the teeth during tooth development; thus, tooth (90)Sr activity concentrations reflect environmental (90)Sr levels during tooth formation. Assessment of (90)Sr in teeth could provide useful information about internal exposure to (90)Sr radiation and allow for the measurement of time-course changes in the degree of environmental (90)Sr pollution.

PURPOSE: To study the lifetime of the short-lived unpaired electron species induced in a calf thymus DNA film by soft X-rays in the energy regions around nitrogen and oxygen K-edge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dry calf thymus DNA films were measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer during the monochromatic soft X-ray irradiation provided from a synchrotron accelerator (SPring-8, Super Photon ring-8 GeV). Two operation modes of SPring-8 with different electron bunch structures were used to explore dependence of EPR intensity on pulse interval of soft X-rays. RESULTS: Observed EPR spectra did not show significant difference, in the spectral shape, intensity, g-factor and photon energy dependence, between the two bunch modes. CONCLUSIONS: The total yield of the unpaired electron species were estimated by assuming the exponential relaxation of the unpaired electrons with two different bunch modes of the synchrotron. The lifetime of the unpaired electron species is estimated to be in the range of a few tens to several hundreds of µs.

Chemical reactions of a novel gauchetype spin trap, G-CYPMPO (sc-5-(5,5-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphinan-2-yl)-5-methy-1-pyrroline N-oxide, O1-P1-C6-N1 torsion angle = 52.8°), with reactive oxygen species were examined by pulse radiolysis technique with 35 MeV electron beam and by electron spin resonance spectroscopy after (60)Co γ-ray irradiation. The spin-trapping reaction rate constants of G-CYPMPO toward the hydroxyl radical and the hydrated electron were estimated to be (4.2 ± 0.1) × 10(9) and (11.8 ± 0.2) × 10(9) M(-1)s(-1), respectively. Half-lives of the spin adducts, hydroxyl radical, and perhydroxyl radical adducted G-CYPMPO were estimated to be ∼35 and ∼90 min, respectively. A comparison of the results with earlier reports using different radical sources suggests that the purity of the solution and/or the radical generation technique may influence the stability of the spin adducts.

RESUMO

Positrons have been used for material analysis not only because of their novel characteristics, such as an ability to detect open-volume type defects in materials, but also because interactions with solids differ from those of electrons in such processes as scattering and diffraction. Monoenergetic positron beams and microbeams were developed in the 1980s, and positron experiments have made progress in material analyses. In this article we review the fundamental technique of microbeam fabrication, especially using a magnetically-guided positron beam, its extension to various analytical methods, and expectations for future research.

Free volume of polystyrene films treated with supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO 2) were examined by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Variation of the free volume sizes after the SCCO 2 treatment due to the release of trapped CO 2 and structural relaxation of the polymer was observed. After 500 h from the depressurization, the free volume of the treated films free from CO 2 was approximately 0.306 nm in radius and much larger than that of the untreated films of approximately 0.295 nm in radius due to the freezing of the swollen structure caused by the large solubility of CO 2.

Nanoporous polysiloxane films were fabricated by plasma polymerization of hexamethyldisiloxane mixed with cyclohexane under different conditions. The pores were generated through the elimination of carbonaceous aggregates (porogen) by annealing at 600 degrees C. Results of spectroscopic ellipsometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy suggest that not only film porosity but also average pore size depends on the amount of the decomposable porogen. The pore size was controllable in a range between 0.6 and 1.0 nm in radius by proper selection of the substrate temperature and precursor composition.
