RESUMO

This experimental anatomic study aimed to investigate the correlations between the mesio-vestibular canal (MB1) and the second mesio-vestibular canal (MB2) of the mesio-vestibular root of the upper sexts using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. A total of 24 extracted maxillary first molars were collected and subjected to CBCT imaging. The presence, location, and morphology of MB1 and MB2 canals were evaluated using axial, coronal, and sagittal CBCT sections. The interrelation between MB1 and MB2 canals was assessed, including their separate canals, merging, and division points. Among the 24 maxillary first molars examined, 86.5% demonstrated the presence of an MB2 canal in addition to MB1. The MB2 and MB1 were confluent in 80% of the cases with a confluent height of 4,16 mm. The mean distance between MB1 and MB2 canals was 1.85 mm. This study provides detailed information on the anatomic correlations between MB1 and MB2 canals of the mesio-vestibular root in the upper sexts using CBCT imaging. The high prevalence of MB2 canals suggests their significance in endodontic procedures and emphasizes the importance of thorough exploration and identification during root canal treatment. The knowledge of the location and morphology of these canals can aid in successful endodontic therapy and enhance treatment outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to determine the cyclic fatigue resistance of Mtwo Minimal in static and dynamic tests, with different amplitudes of pecking movements, at intracanal temperature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred new 25-mm Mtwo Minimal rotary files (#10/0.035, #17.5/0.045, #25/0.05, #40/0.03, #45/0.03) were tested in static and dynamic cyclic fatigue tests at 35°C (±1°C). An artificial stainless-steel canal was used. In the dynamic mode, axial movements were set at 1 and 3 mm. The number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was recorded and statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The 3-mm dynamic test showed significantly increased NCF than the other tests for the #10/0.035, #17.5/0.045, and #25/0.05 files (p < 0.05). The #40/0.03 and #45/0.03 files showed no significant differences in all the tests (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Mtwo Minimal showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance in the dynamic test than the static test, except for the larger instruments. The 3-mm pecking amplitude increased the cyclic fatigue resistance of the smaller instruments.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Mushroom poisoning is an important cause of intoxication worldwide. The toxic mechanism remains frequently unknown and the diffusion of non-endemic species may cause the emergence of new syndromes. An example is the widespread of Chlorophyllum molybdites in Sicily. CASE SERIES: Pavia Poison Centre was recently involved in the management of 10 intoxications caused by the ingestion of Chlorophyllum molybdites, which was not considered part of the Italian mycological species. The clinical syndrome was characterized by severe gastrointestinal symptoms. In paediatric or vulnerable patients, it may bring to hypovolemic shock that necessitate intensive support. The possibly confusion with amatoxins-containing mushrooms may complicate the management. CONCLUSIONS: Chlorophyllum molybdites is widespread on the oriental coast of Sicily and it could be confused with "parasol mushrooms". Cooperation between emergency physicians, clinical toxicologist and mycologist, supported by improving of laboratory tests, is essential for the appropriate clinical management. Climate changes and migration flows can interfere with the diffusion of new species and the development of novel syndromes.

RESUMO

This study describes 6 cases of endodontic overfilling with successful clinical outcomes during long-term (up to 35 years) radiographic follow-up. Successful endodontic treatment depends on proper shaping, disinfection, and obturation of root canals. Filling materials should completely fill the root canal space without exceeding the anatomical apex. Overfilling may occur when the filling material extrudes into the periapical tissues beyond the apex. The present case series describes 6 root canal treatments in which overfilling of root canal sealer and gutta-percha accidentally occurred. Patients' teeth were periodically checked with periapical radiographs in order to evaluate the outcomes during long-term follow-up. All cases showed healing and progressive resorption of the extruded materials in the periapex. The present cases showed that if a 3-dimensional seal was present at the apical level, overfilling did not negatively affect the long-term outcomes of root canal treatment.

RESUMO

In the framework of the MICADO (Measurement and Instrumentation for Cleaning And Decommissioning Operations) European Union (EU) project, aimed at the full digitization of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste management, a set of 32 solid state thermal neutron detectors named SiLiF has been built and characterized. MICADO encompasses a complete active and passive characterization of the radwaste drums with neutrons and gamma rays, followed by a longer-term monitoring phase. The SiLiF detectors are suitable for the monitoring of nuclear materials and can be used around radioactive waste drums possibly containing small quantities of actinides, as well as around spent fuel casks in interim storage or during transportation. Suitable polyethylene moderators can be exploited to better shape the detector response to the expected neutron spectrum, according to Monte Carlo simulations that were performed. These detectors were extensively tested with an AmBe neutron source, and the results show a quite uniform and reproducible behavior.

RESUMO

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of rotation speed on the instrumentation time of root canals with different curvatures using Mtwo NiTi rotary instruments. Methods and Materials: Forty root canals were selected and divided into 2 groups, according to the angle of curvature (group A>30°, group B<30°). Both groups were divided into 2 subgroups (n=10), according to the rotational speed used for root canal instrumentation (150 rpm: group A1 and B1; 250 rpm: group A2 and B2). The total instrumentation time and the total number of instrumentation cycles (NCI) required to complete root canal preparation were registered for each canal. The mean and standard deviation were then calculated. Data were then statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and interaction effect P-values (P<0.05). Results: During root canal instrumentation, there were no file fractures. Total instrumentation time of the low speed groups A1 (150 rpm) and B1 (150 rpm) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of the high speed groups, A2 (250 rpm) and B2 (250 rpm); however, there was no statistically significant difference in terms of NCI between the different groups (P>0.05). Statistical difference was not found between the different angles of curvature, group A1 vs B1 and A2 vs B2 in terms of total instrumentation time (P>0.05) and NCI (P>0.05). Conclusions: This ex-vivo study showed that canal preparation with Mtwo rotary files could be completed safely with an increase of the instrumentation time at low rotational speed independently of the root canal curvature.

RESUMO

A cheap and efficient diagnostic system for beam monitoring has been recently developed at INFN-LNS in Catania. It consists of a high sensitivity CCD camera detecting the light produced by an ion beam hitting the surface of a scintillating screen and a frame grabber for image acquisition. A scintillating screen, developed at INFN-LNS and consisting of a 2 µm BaF2 layer evaporated on an aluminium plate, has been tested by using (20)Ne and (40)Ar beams in the keV energy range. The CAESAR ECR ion source has been used for investigating the influence of the frequency and magnetic field tuning effects, the impact of the microwave injected power, and of the focusing solenoids along the low energy beam transport on the beam shape and current. These tests will allow to better understand the interplay between the plasma and beam dynamics and, moreover, to improve the transport efficiency along the low energy beam line and the matching with the superconducting cyclotron, particularly relevant in view of the expected upgrade of the machine.

RESUMO

A semiconductor detector coupled with a neutron converter is a good candidate for neutron detection, especially for its compactness and reliability if compared with other devices, such as (3)He tubes, even though its intrinsic efficiency is rather lower. In this paper we show a neutron detector design consisting of a 3 cm × 3 cm silicon pad detector coupled with one or two external (6)LiF layers, enriched in (6)Li at 95%, placed in contact with the Si active surfaces. This prototype, first characterized and tested at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud and then at JRC Ispra, was successfully shown to detect thermal neutrons with the expected efficiency and an outstanding gamma rejection capability.

RESUMO

We report on the measurements performed using a (22)Na source on a detector element for a magnetic resonance imaging-compatible time-of-flight-positron emission tomography endorectal prostate probe, with depth-of-interaction sensitivity. It is made from a LYSO scintillator crystal, wrapped with Lumirror, readout at both ends by means of silicon photomultipliers. With a detailed description of the data analysis procedure, we show that our results point to a 400 ps coincidence resolving time and, at the same time, to a depth-of-interaction resolution of 1 mm. These appealing features, along with the tiny 1.5 mm × 1.5 mm × 10 mm crystal size, are quite promising in view of the realization of a prototype probe.

RESUMO

AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate cyclic fatigue resistance of four nickel - titanium rotary (NTR) instruments produced by a new method or traditional grinding processes. METHODS: FOUR NTR INSTRUMENTS FROM DIFFERENT BRANDS WERE SELECTED: group 1. Twisted File produced by a new thermal treatment of nickel - titanium alloy; group 2. Revo S SU; group 3. Mtwo and group 4. BioRaCe BR3 produced by traditional grinding processes. A total of 80 instruments (20 for each group) were tested for cyclic fatigue resistance inside a curved artificial canal with a 60 degree angle of curvature and 5 mm radius of curvature. Time to fracture (TtF) from the start of the test until the moment of file breakage and the length of the fractured tip was recorded for each instrument. Means and standard deviations (SD) of TtF and fragment length were calculated. Data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Group 1 (Twisted File) showed the highest value of TtF means. Cyclic fatigue resistance of Twisted File and Mtwo was significantly higher than group 2 (Revo S SU) and 4 (BioRace BR3), while no significant differences were found between group 1 (Twisted File) and 3 (Mtwo) or group 2 (Revo S SU) and 4 (BioRaCe BR3). CONCLUSIONS: The cyclic fatigue resistance of Twisted File was significantly frigher than instruments produced with traditional grinding process except of Mtwo files.

RESUMO

By exploiting a suitable treatment of the scintillator surfaces, along with silicon photomultiplier photodetectors and specific algorithms for raw data analysis, we achieved a remarkable tradeoff between energy, time, and depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution, thus supporting the feasibility of a prostate time-of-flight positron emission tomography probe, magnetic resonance imaging compatible, with the required features and performance. In numbers this means a detector element of 1.5 mm × 1.5 mm × 10 mm, promising to achieve at the same time energy resolution around 11.5%, coincidence resolving time around 300 ps corresponding to a space resolution <5 cm along the line of response, and DOI resolution even below 1 mm. We stress that such a time resolution allows to increase significantly the noise equivalent counting rate, and consequently improve the image quality and the lesion detection capability.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to assess the resistance to cyclic fatigue of three nickel-titanium (NiTi) files after the immersion in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution in conditions similar to those used in clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 150 new Twisted Files (SybronEndo, Orange, CA), Revo S SU files (Micro Mega, Besancon, France), and Mtwo files (Sweden and Martina, Padova, Italy), size 25.06, were tested. Fifty files of the same brand were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 10) and submitted to the following immersion protocol in 5% NaOCl at 37°C for 16 mm: no immersion (control), 5 minutes statically, 1 minute statically, 5 minutes dynamically (300 rpm/min), and 1 minute dynamically. Resistance to cyclic fatigue was determined by counting the numbers of cycles to failure in a 60° curve with a 5-mm radius. Data were analyzed by two-way analyses of variance. RESULTS: Resistance to cyclic fatigue of the same NiTi file was not significantly affected by immersion in NaOCl (P > .05). The Twisted File showed a higher resistance in all groups than Revo S SU (P < .001). The comparison between the same groups of Twisted Files and Mtwo files or between Mtwo and Revo S files did not show significant differences (P > .05) except for two cases: group 2 of the Twisted Files and Mtwo files and group 5 of the Mtwo and Revo S SU files (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Static or dynamic immersion in NaOCl for 1 minute or 5 minutes did not reduce the cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi significantly. However, the type of instrument influences cyclic fatigue resistance. In our study, Twisted Files were more resistant followed by Mtwo and Revo S SU files.

RESUMO

In order to investigate the limits of scintillating screens for beam profile monitoring in the ultra-low energy, ultra-low intensity regime, CsI:Tl, YAG:Ce, and a Tb glass-based scintillating fiber optic plate (SFOP) were tested. The screens response to 200 and 50 keV proton beams with intensities ranging from a few picoampere down to the subfemtoampere region was examined. In the following paper, the sensitivity and resolution studies are presented in detail for CsI:Tl and the SFOP, the two most sensitive screens. In addition, a possible use of scintillators for ultra-low energy antiproton beam monitoring is discussed.

RESUMO

We propose a technique for thermal neutron detection, based on a (6)Li converter placed in front of scintillating fibers readout by means of silicon photomultipliers. Such a technique allows building cheap and compact detectors and dosimeters, thus possibly opening new perspectives in terms of granular monitoring of neutron fluxes as well as space-resolved neutron detection.

RESUMO

Triggered by the need of a detection system to be used in experiments of nuclear fusion in laser-generated plasmas, we developed an imaging technique for the measurement and calibration of the scintillation light yield of scintillating materials. As in such experiments, all the reaction products are generated in an ultrashort time frame, the event-by-event data acquisition scheme is not feasible. As an alternative to the emulsion technique (or the equivalent CR39 sheets) we propose a scintillating screen readout by means of a high performance charge coupled device camera. Even though it is not strictly required in the particular application, this technique allows the absolute calibration of the scintillation light yield.
