RESUMO

The declining birth rate, population ageing and the outbound migration of young people in recent years have created obstacles for local companies in recruiting skilled personnel. Similar factors have also affected recruitment in the outlying island of Penghu, Taiwan. Multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) techniques for evaluation model development were incorporated in the present research to investigate the key determinants of talent recruitment by the coffee house operators in the outlying island of Penghu. The decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach was first implemented to (i) examine the extent of mutual impact between evaluation predictors and (ii) develop an influential network relation map (NRM) for indicator and sub-indicator assessments. Subsequently, the DEMATEL-based analytic network process (DANP) technique was utilised to compute the weights of every indicator and sub-indicator. Additionally, the modified VlseKriterijumska Optimizcija I Kaompromisno Resenje or VIKOR (in Serbian) approach evaluated every indicator and sub-indicator performance gap for empirical data analysis with suggested conclusions and recommendations. The results showed that the first dimension that should be improved is past experience, followed by personality traits and professional competence, according to the causal diagram of the NRM. The weights acquired through the DANP indicated that professional competence was the most influential dimension, followed by personality traits, whereas past experience was the least influential. Past experience revealed that the highest gap value is the most important for development if coffee house operators want to attain the appropriate levels. Finally, the theoretical, managerial, and practical implications were discussed. Notably, the research outcomes could optimise talent recruitment, establish appropriate talent recruitment methods for coffee house operators, and enhance the human resource quality in the outlying island of Penghu.

Most people associate Penghu with the roadside banquet, an iconic banquet in the area. Nevertheless, market demand for these banquets has lately fallen drastically, causing a severe impact on the industry. In this study, the critical factors influencing the choice to conduct roadside wedding banquets were investigated from the consumer's standpoint. Initially, on the basis of expert screening and literature study, 14 criteria covering five dimensions were developed. Subsequently, causal connections and impact weights were determined using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and DANP (DEMATEL-based analytic network process) models. The findings indicate that customers prioritise service quality in improvement initiatives. Dish quality, hygiene, and marketing are the most appreciated dimensions. Overall, customers place the highest significance on pricing. The industry is recommended to create online marketing platforms, raise the standard of wedding banquet services, combine the value chains of wedding services, and support the sustainable growth of the industry. The method used enriches existing theoretical approaches concerning roadside wedding banquets and is applicable in assisting wedding banquet providers' management in holding roadside weddings.

In tissue engineering, foreign body reactions (FBRs) that may occur after the insertion of medical implants are a considerable challenge. Materials currently used in implants are mainly metals that are non-organic, and the lack of biocompatibility and absence of immune regulations may lead to fibrosis after long periods of implantation. Here, we introduce a highly biocompatible hybrid interface of graphene oxide (GO) and collagen type I (COL-I), where the topological nanostructure can effectively inhibit the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. The structure and roughness of this coating interface can be easily adjusted at the nanoscale level through changes in the GO concentration, thereby effectively inducing the polarization of macrophages to the M1 state without producing excessive amounts of pro-inflammatory factors. Compared to nanomaterials or the extracellular matrix as an anti-fibrotic interface, this hybrid bio-interface has superior mechanical strength, physical structures, and high inflammation. Evidenced by inorganic materials such as glass, titanium, and nitinol, GO-COL shows great potential for use in medical implants and cell-material interfaces.

In wireless sensor networks, it is important to use the right number of sensors to optimize the network and consider the key design and cost. Due to the limited power of sensors, important issues include how to control the state of the sensor through an automatic control algorithm and how to power-save and efficiently distribute work. However, sensor nodes are usually deployed in dangerous or inaccessible locations. Therefore, it is difficult and impractical to supply power to sensors through humans. In this study, we propose a high reliability control algorithm with fast convergence and strong self-organization ability called the sensor activity control algorithm (SACA), which can efficiently control the number of sensors in the active state and extend their use time. In the next round, SACA considers the relationship between the total number of active sensors and the target value and determines the state of the sensor. The data transmission technology of random access is used between the sensor and the base station. Therefore, the sensor in the sleep state does not need to receive the feedback packet from the base station. The sensor can achieve true dormancy and power-saving effects. The experimental results show that SACA has fast convergence, strong self-organization capabilities, and power-saving advantages.

With the development of new technologies and applications, such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, 5G, and edge computing, traditional Internet Protocol-based (IP-based) networks have been exposed as having many problems. Information-Centric Networking (ICN), Named Data Networking (NDN), and Content-Centric Networking (CCN) are therefore proposed as an alternative for future networks. However, unlike IP-based networks, CCN routing is non-deterministic and difficult to optimize due to frequent in-network caching replacement. This paper presents a novel probe-based routing algorithm that explores real-time in-network caching to ensure the routing table storing the optimal paths to the nearest content provider is up to date. Effective probe-selections, Pending Interest Table (PIT) probe, and Forwarding Information Base (FIB) probe are discussed and analyzed by simulation with different performance measurements. Compared with the basic CCN, in terms of qualitative analysis, the additional computational overhead of our approach is O(NCS + Nrt + NFIB ∗ NSPT) and O(NFIB) on processing interest packets and data packets, respectively. However, in terms of quantitative analysis, our approach reduces the number of timeout interests by 6% and the average response time by 0.6 s. Furthermore, although basic CCN and our approach belong to the same Quality of Service (QoS) category, our approach outperforms basic CCN in terms of real values. Additionally, our probe-based approach performs better than RECIF+PIF and EEGPR. Owing to speedup FIB updating by probes, our approach provides more reliable interest packet routing when accounting for router failures. In summary, the results demonstrate that compared to basic CCN, our probe-based routing approach raises FIB accuracy and reduces network congestion and response time, resulting in efficient routing.

BACKGROUND: Single dose hepatitis A virus (HAV) vaccine had been proven its efficacy in immunocompetent but not immunocompromised hosts. We aim to investigate the effectiveness of one dose versus 2 doses HAV vaccine among people living with HIV (PLHIV). METHOD: We conducted a 1:1 single center retrospective case-control study for PLHIV in Northern Taiwan. Case patients were those who received single dose HAV vaccine and controls were those who completed standard 2 doses HAV vaccine. Nationwide campaign of single dose HAV vaccine had been practiced for high risk population including PLHIV and those who had newly diagnosed sexually transmitted diseases. RESULTS: During February 2016 and December 2017, 90 cases received single dose HAV vaccine provided while the other 90 age-matched controls received 2 doses vaccine were enrolled. We found more injection drug users (22.22% vs. 1.11%, p < 0.0001), more co-infection with viral hepatitis C (28.89% vs. 5.56%, p < 0.0001), and history of syphilis infection (56.67% VS 30%, p = 0.0003) in single dose group than 2 doses group. Seroconversion rate at one year was significantly higher in 2 doses group (97.78% vs 56.67%, p < 0.0001). Among single dose group, people with hepatitis B or C virus co-infection (HBV: p = 0.02, aOR: 0.03, 95% CI: 0.002-0.55; HCV: p = 0.002, aOR: 0.22, 95% CI: 0.08-0.58) were less likely to achieve seropositivity, while those who had higher CD4 count at baseline and one year, had better response to vaccine. CONCLUSION: Two doses HAV vaccine is necessary among PLHIV to achieve sustained seroresponse rather than single dose.

Catechu is a dried decoction from twigs with the leaves of Uncaria gambir. Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities have been previously reported because of its high catechin and epicatechin content (>21%). It is also one of the components used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine, "Jinchuang Ointment," which has excellent efficacy in treating chronic diabetic wounds. An in vivo zebrafish embryo platform and an in vitro cell-based tube formation assay were used to measure the angiogenic activity of catechu extracts. Interestingly, for the first time, catechu extracts stimulated angiogenic activity on both platforms. The expression of the IL-8 gene was induced in HMEC1 cells after treatment with catechu extracts for 1 h only. In contrast, the upregulation of FGFR2, FGFR3, NF-κB, STAT3, and vimentin persisted for 24 h. A summary of the possible mechanisms underlying the angiogenic activity of catechu extracts in HMEC1 cells is shown. Unexpectedly, catechu extracts inhibited the migration of HaCaT cells. These results can account for the intense blood flow flux in porcine excisional wound sites in our previous studies, which provides insights into the therapeutic activity of catechu extract in chronic diabetic wounds.

Over time, correctional institutions have actively implemented innovations in prison administration. Most correctional institutions constitute conservative and closed societies. Generally, people do not have sufficient knowledge or understanding of penal correction. Therefore, it is difficult but necessary to break the stereotyped impression people hold about correctional institutions, actively integrate them into society, and encourage people to assume a more humane attitude towards correctional institutions. We conducted an inductive analysis of Penghu Prison administered by the Agency of Corrections, Ministry of Justice, Taiwan. After creating evaluation indices for the development of more humane correctional institutions, we conducted a survey to classify the evaluation indices into criteria under the four major evaluation dimensions. Using DEMATEL, we determined the causal relationship among different evaluation indicators and generated an influential network relation map about the evaluation criteria. Using DANP, we subsequently calculated weightings for the influence of each criterion. Finally, using the modified VIKOR, we conducted a gap analysis. The results of this study can be used to build a more positive and human reputation for correctional institutions and enable their sustainable creation.

Leishmaniasis is prevalent in Southern Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa, and Central and South America. Cutaneous leishmaniasis may spontaneously heal over time without treatment; however, risk of visceral dissemination and the impact of cosmetic defect are important concerns. We report a Case of cutaneous leishmaniasis in a patient who ever traveled to Mexico before the onset of a deteriorating wound around the swollen left eyebrow. A diagnosis of infection with Leishmania mexicana was made based on histopathological examination and molecular identification. Systemic treatment with liposomal amphotericin B and ketoconazole were administered with gradual healing of the lesion. Also, this traveler case implicates that the spread of endemic parasitic diseases may be a concealed risk on the public health for Taiwan underlying globalization.

The location information obtained using a sensor is a critical requirement in wireless sensor networks. Numerous localization schemes have been proposed, among which mobile-anchor-node-assisted localization (MANAL) can reduce costs and overcome environmental constraints. A mobile anchor node (MAN) provides its own location information to assist the localization of sensor nodes. Numerous path planning schemes have been proposed for MANAL, but most scenarios assume the absence of obstacles in the environment. However, in a realistic environment, sensor nodes cannot be located because the obstacles block the path traversed by the MAN, thereby rendering the sensor incapable of receiving sufficient three location information from the MAN. This study proposes the obstacle-tolerant path planning (OTPP) approach to solve the sensor location problem owing to obstacle blockage. OTPP can approximate the optimum beacon point number and path planning, thereby ensuring that all the unknown nodes can receive the three location information from the MAN and reduce the number of MAN broadcast packet times. Experimental results demonstrate that OTPP performs better than Z-curves because it reduces the total number of beacon points utilized and is thus more suitable in an obstacle-present environment. Compared to the Z-curve, OTPP can reduce localization error and improve localization coverage.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of glutamine (Gln) supplementation on gene expressions of inflammatory mediators and cytokines associated with T-helper cell type 17 (Th17) regulation in diabetic rats. METHODS: There were one normal control group and two diabetic groups in this study. Rats in the normal control group were fed a regular chow diet. One diabetic group (DM) was fed a common semipurified diet, and the other diabetic group received a diet in which part of the casein was replaced by Gln (DM-Gln), which provided 25% of the total amino acid nitrogen for 8 wk. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of nicotinamide followed by streptozotocin. Rats with blood glucose levels exceeding 200 mg/dL were considered diabetic. Blood samples and blood mononuclear cells of the animals were collected at the end of the study for further analysis. RESULTS: Gene expressions of transforming growth factor-ß1 and interleukin-17A did not differ in blood mononuclear cells among the three groups. Expressions of interleukin-6, interleukin-23, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and the receptor of the advanced glycated endproducts gene were higher in blood mononuclear cells and the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione was lower in erythrocytes in the DM group than in the normal control group. Messenger RNA expressions of these genes were lower, whereas the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione was higher in the DM-Gln group than in the DM group. CONCLUSION: Supplemental dietary Gln increased the antioxidant potential and downregulated the expressions of inflammatory mediators. However, Th17 might not be an important involved pathway and the regulatory effect of Gln on Th17 immune response was not obvious in this animal model.

There are close links among hyperglycaemia, oxidative stress and diabetic complications. Glutamine (GLN) is an amino acid with immunomodulatory properties. The present study investigated the effect of dietary GLN on oxidative stress-relative gene expressions and tissue oxidative damage in diabetes. There were one normal control (NC) and two diabetic groups in the present study. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of nicotinamide followed by streptozotocin (STZ). Rats in the NC group were fed a regular chow diet. In the two diabetic groups, one group (diabetes mellitus, DM) was fed a common semi-purified diet while the other group received a diet in which part of the casein was replaced by GLN (DM-GLN). GLN provided 25% of total amino acid N. The experimental groups were fed the respective diets for 8 weeks, and then the rats were killed for further analysis. The results showed that blood thioredoxin-interacting protein (Txnip) mRNA expression in the diabetic groups was higher than that in the NC group. Compared with the DM group, the DM-GLN group had lower glutamine fructose-6-phosphate transaminase 1, a receptor of advanced glycation end products, and Txnip gene expressions in blood mononuclear cells. The total antioxidant capacity was lower and antioxidant enzyme activities were altered by the diabetic condition. GLN supplementation increased antioxidant capacity and normalised antioxidant enzyme activities. Also, the renal nitrotyrosine level and Txnip mRNA expression were lower when GLN was administered. These results suggest that dietary GLN supplementation decreases oxidative stress-related gene expression, increases the antioxidant potential and may consequently attenuate renal oxidative damage in rats with STZ-induced diabetes.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Glutamine (Gln) is known to have immunomodulatory effects. Previous studies reported that Gln promotes insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes. However, the effects of Gln on insulin-deficient type 1 diabetes are not clear. This study investigated the effects of dietary Gln supplementation on adhesion molecule expression and oxidative damage in type 1 diabetic mice. METHODS: There were 1 normal control (NC) group and 2 diabetic groups in this study. Mice in the NC group were fed a regular chow diet. One diabetic group (DM) was fed a common semipurified diet while the other diabetic group received a diet in which part of the casein was replaced by Gln (DM-Gln), which provided 25% of the total amino acid nitrogen for 6 wk. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin at a dose of 150 mg/kg body weight. Blood samples and the liver and kidneys of the animals were collected at the end of the study for further analysis. RESULTS: Plasma glucose, fructosamine contents and adhesion molecule expressions were significantly higher in the diabetic groups than in the NC group. The DM group had higher leukocyte CD11a/CD18 expression. In diabetic mice, nitrotyrosine concentrations and myeloperoxidase activities were higher and the reduced to oxidized glutathione ratio was lower in liver and/or kidney. These alterations were not found in diabetic mice supplemented with Gln. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that supplemental dietary Gln increased the antioxidant potential and consequently decreased leukocyte adhesion molecule expression and oxidative stress in organs of mice with type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. The abnormalities in nutrient metabolism and elevated inflammatory mediators resulting from DM lead to impairment of wound healing and vulnerability to infection and foot ulcers. Diabetic lower limb ischemia often leads to limb necrosis. Lower extremity bypass surgery (LEBS) is indicated to prevent limb loss in patients with critical leg ischemia. This study investigated the alteration of inflammatory and endothelium dysfunction markers before and after LEBS in DM patients. Twenty one type 2 DM patients with LEBS were included. Blood was drawn before and at 1 day and 7 days after surgery in the patients. Plasma soluble cellular adhesion molecule levels and blood leukocyte integrin expressions were measured. Also, plasma concentrations of endothelin-1 and nitric oxide were analyzed to evaluate the vascular endothelial function. The results showed that there were no significant differences in plasma cellular adhesion molecules, endothelin-1 and nitric oxide levels, nor did any differences in leukocyte integrin expressions before and after the operation. These results suggest that the efficacy of LEBS on alleviating inflammatory reaction and improving endothelial function in DM patients was not obvious.
