This study aimed to differentiate the flavor characteristics of raw chicken breast meat from Thai slow-growing breeds (NC: native chicken, and KC: Korat/crossbred chicken) and fast-growing broilers (BR: broiler chicken) by using NMR-based metabolomic approaches along with multivariate data analysis. Chemical compounds related to chicken's flavor including free amino acids (FAA), ATP and its related compounds, sugars, as well as volatile compounds (VOC), were also investigated. BR had the highest total FAAs, followed by NC and KC (P < 0.05). In contrast, the accumulations of ATP degradation products, particularly ADP and IMP, were found at higher levels in the NC and KC (P < 0.05), while the highest total reducing sugars were noted in the KC (P < 0.05). Most VOCs found in the fresh breasts were products from the degradation of lipids, especially through lipid oxidation, which was found in varied types and proportions among samples. Not only chemical compounds but varying amounts of metabolites among samples were also detected. Apart from 21 identified metabolites, Glu, Gln, and betaine were the most prevalent in all samples with VIP > 1.00. Among 19 metabolic pathways, the most important pathways (P-value < 0.05, FDR < 0.05, impact > 0.05) were discovered to differentiate the flavor of raw chicken breast meat from various breeds. These metabolic pathways included (1) Ala, Asp and Glu metabolism; (2) D-Gln and D-Glu metabolism; (3) Purine metabolism; (4) ß-Ala metabolism; (5) Aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis; (6) Nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism; (7) Pyrimidine metabolism. Interestingly, based on the principal component analysis plot and partial least square-discriminant analysis (R2 = 0.9804; Q2 = 0.9782), NC and KC were clustered in the same area and discriminated from BR, indicating their similar flavor characteristics and metabolic profiles. Therefore, the findings could comprehend and distinguish the flavor of chicken breast meat of slow- from fast-growing chicken breeds based on their chemical characteristics and metabolite profiles.

We aimed to estimate the non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) requirements of Chinese Jing Tint 6 layer chicks. We randomly allocated 720 birds to five treatments with six cages of 24 birds each, feeding them a corn-soybean diet containing 0.36%, 0.41%, 0.46%, 0.51%, and 0.56% NNP. The results showed that the body weight gain (BWG), tibial length, and apparent total tract digestibility coefficients (ATTDC) of P were affected (p < 0.05) by dietary NPP level. A quadratic broken-line analysis (p < 0.05) of BWG indicated that the optimal NPP for birds aged 1-14 d was 0.411%. Similarly, 0.409% of NPP met tibial growth needs. However, 0.394% of NPP was optimal for P utilization according to the ATTDC criterion. For 15-42 d birds, 0.466% NPP, as estimated by the BWG criterion, was sufficient for optimal growth without decreasing P utilization. Using the factorial method, NPP requirements were calculated as 0.367% and 0.439%, based on the maintenance factors and BWG for 1-14 and 15-42 d birds, respectively, to maintain normal growth. Combining the non-linear model with the factorial method, this study recommends dietary NPP levels of 0.367% and 0.439% for 1-14 and 15-42 d birds, respectively, to optimize P utilization without affecting performance.

OBJECTIVE: Yellow Korean native chicken (KNC-Y) is one of the five pure Korean indigenous chicken breeds that were restored through a government project in 1992. KNC-Y is recognized for its superior egg production performance compared to other KNC lines. In this study, we performed runs of homozygosity (ROH) analysis to discover selection signatures associated with egg production traits in the KNC-Y population. METHODS: A total of 675 DNA samples from KNC-Y were genotyped to generate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data using custom 60K Affymetrix SNP chips. ROH analysis was performed using PLINK software, with predefined parameters set for the analysis. The threshold of ROH island was defined as the top 1% frequency of SNPs withing the ROH among the population. RESULTS: In the KNC-Y population, a total of 29,958 runs of homozygosity (ROH) fragments were identified. The average total length of ROH was 120.84 Mb, with each ROH fragment having an average length of 2.71 Mb. The calculated ROH-based inbreeding coefficient (FROH) was 0.13. Furthermore, we revealed the presence of ROH islands on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 11. Within the identified regions, a total of 111 genes were annotated, and among them were genes related to economic traits, including PRMT3, ANO5, HDAC4, LSS, PLA2G4A, and PTGS2. Most of the overlapping quantitative trait locus regions with ROH islands were found to be associated with production traits. CONCLUSION: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of ROH in the KNC-Y population. Notably, among the findings, the PTGS2 gene is believed to play a crucial role in influencing the laying performance of KNC-Y.

The thymus-derived lymphocytes of jawed vertebrates have four T-cell receptor (TCR) chains that play a significant role in immunity. As chickens have commercial value, their immune systems require a great deal of attention. Local chicken breeds are an essential part of poultry genetic resources in China. Here, we used high-throughput sequencing to analyze the TCRα and TCRß repertoires and their relative expression levels in the native chicken breeds Baier Buff, Longyou Partridge, Xiaoshan, and Xianju. We found that TCR Vα and TCR Vß were expressed and included 17, 19, 17, and six segments of the Vα2, Vα3, Vß1, and Vß2 subgroups, respectively. V-J pairing was biased; Jα11 was utilized by nearly all Vα segments and was the most commonly used. Breed-specific V segments and V-J pairings were detected as well. The results of the principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) as well as the V-J pairing and CDR3 diversity analyses suggested that the four local chicken breeds did not significantly differ in terms of TCR diversity. Hence, they expressed not significant differentiation, and they are rich genetic resources for the development and utilization of immune-related poultry breeding.

The thermal stress caused by global climate change adversely affects the welfare, productivity, and reproductive performance of farm animals, including chickens, and causes substantial economic losses. However, the understanding of the genetic basis of the indigenous chicken adaptation to high ambient temperatures is limited. Hence, to reveal the genetic basis of thermal stress adaptation in chickens, this study investigated polymorphisms in the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and HSP90 genes, known mechanisms of cellular defense against thermal stress in indigenous and local chicken breeds and red junglefowls in Thailand. The result revealed seven alleles of the HSP70 gene. One allele exhibited a missense mutation, where an amino acid changed from Asn to His in the substrate-binding and peptide-binding domains, which is exclusive to the Lao Pa Koi chicken breed. Twenty new alleles with silent mutations in the HSP90 gene highlighted its greater complexity. Despite this diversity, distinct population structures were not found for either HSP70 or HSP90, which suggests incomplete impact on the domestication process and selection. The low genetic diversity, shown by the sharing of alleles between red junglefowls and Thai indigenous and local chicken breeds, aligns with the hypothesis that these alleles have undergone selection in tropical regions, such as Thailand. Selection signature analysis suggests the purifying selection of HSP70 for thermotolerance. This study provides valuable insights for enhancing the conservation of genetic resources with thermotolerant traits, which are essential for developing breeding programs to increase poultry production in the context of global climate change.

The Mapuche fowl is an autochthonous breed raised in Chile and represents an important zoogenetic resource for the local economy. This study aimed at investigating the genetic diversity, relationship and population structure of 96 local Chilean chickens derived from 3 ecotype of Mapuche fowl (Kollonka, Ketro, and Kollonka de aretes), 2 ecotype Chilean (Trintre, Cogote pelado) and 2 breeds (Light Brahma and Barred Plymouth Rock) using 12 microsatellite markers. In total, 113 alleles were detected in all populations, with a mean of 7.6 alleles per population. In all population chicken breeds, the observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.91 to 0.98 and from 0.69 to 0.79. Furthermore, all populations showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Across each population, the global heterozygosity deficit (FIT) was -0.174, population differentiation index (FST) was 0.073, and the global inbreeding of individuals within breed (FIS) was -0.267. The phylogenetic relationships of chickens were examined using neighbor-joining trees constructed at the level of population. The highest Nei's standard genetic distance value of 0.559 was observed between Barred Plymouth Rock and Light Brahma, whereas the minimum value (0.099) was found between Kollonka and Trintre. The neighbor-joining tree constructed at population level revealed 2 main clusters, with Light Brahma, Barred Plymouth Rock, Ketro and Kollonka de aretes in 1 cluster, and Kollonka, Trintre and Cogote pelado breeds in the second cluster. Based on the results of the STRUCTURE analysis, the most likely number of clustering of the population evaluated was at K = 3, with Light Brahma and Barred Plymouth Rock breeds forming their own distinct clusters, while Kollonka, Ketro, Kollonka de aretes, Trintre and Cogote pelado breeds clustered together. This study represents the first report of genetic diversity in these populations in Chile. These results can be used as baseline genetic information for genetic conservation program, for instance, to control inbreeding and to implement further genetic studies in local Chilean chickens.

The current study evaluates additive and non-additive genetic variances for egg quality traits in six genotypes generated through pure mating and reciprocal crossing of Fayoumi (FM) with Koekoek (KK) and White Leghorn (WL). For each genotype, measurements were taken on 30 eggs randomly sampled at 32, 36, and 40 weeks of age to evaluate both external and internal egg quality parameters. The results revealed significant differences (P < 0.001) among the genotypes in all external quality traits and most internal quality traits, including yolk weight (YW), albumen weight (AW), and yolk height (YH). The results also showed that variations due to purebred effect (PE), general combining ability (GCA), maternal effect (ME), and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant in most traits, which reflects that both additive and non-additive variances are important for the inheritances of the parameters investigated. In most of the traits, the ME and PE were higher in KK and WL, while GCA was higher in KK and FM. The FM x WL had higher SCA than FM x KK. The results suggest the likelihood of genetic improvement in these genotypes through selection and crossbreeding strategies and/or a combination of the two.

Body weight of chicken is a typical quantitative trait, which shows phenotypic variations due to selective breeding. Despite some QTL loci have been obtained, the body weight of native chicken breeds in different geographic regions varies greatly, its genetic basis remains unresolved questions. To address this issue, we analyzed 117 Chinese indigenous chickens from 10 breeds (Huiyang Bearded, Xinhua, Hotan Black, Baicheng You, Liyang, Yunyang Da, Jining Bairi, Lindian, Beijing You, Tibetan). We applied fixation index (FST) analysis to find selected genomic regions and genes associated with body weight traits. Our study suggests that NELL1, XYLT1, and NCAPG/LCORL genes are strongly selected in the body weight trait of Chinese indigenous chicken breeds. In addition, the IL1RAPL1 gene was strongly selected in large body weight chickens, while the PCDH17 and CADM2 genes were strongly selected in small body weight chickens. This result suggests that the patterns of genetic variation of native chicken and commercial chicken, and/or distinct local chicken breeds may follow different evolutionary mechanisms.

1. Killing male one-day-old chicks, especially from layer lines, is banned in some European countries. Therefore, dual-purpose chickens, where each sex is used for meat and egg production, respectively, offer an alternative production solution. This study evaluated the British purebred breed Ixworth as a dual-purpose chicken for meat and egg production.2. Ixworth chicks (n = 167) were hatched and reared mixed-sex in a floor housing system, with two groups receiving a commercial pullet diet (treatment 1) and two groups receiving a diet composed for males of layer lines (treatment 2). Individual chick performance data were recorded. Males were slaughtered at 12 weeks of age, and their growth rate and carcase variables were analysed. All hens were continuously reared on the pullet diet and kept in a free-range system from 20 weeks old for one laying period (52 weeks). In addition, group-based feed consumption and mortality were recorded.3. Cockerels in treatment 1 and 2 showed significantly different [T(88) = -2.846, P = 0.003] growth rates (25.3 vs. 27.4 g/day) and average final weights (2166 g vs. 2344 g). The hens in treatment 1 (n = 41) laid an average of 193 eggs per hen housed (mean egg weight: 56.9 g), whereas those in treatment 2 (n = 35) laid 195 eggs per hen housed (mean egg weight: 56.5 g). Nest acceptance was >97.5% and feed consumption was up to 140 g/bird/day.4. The results showed that the Ixworth may be a suitable breed for dual-purpose use and could be improved through selective breeding, offering potential for preservation of this local breed as well as general biodiversity in poultry farming.

Indigenous chicken breeds have both cultural significance and economic value since they possess unique genetic characteristics that enable them to adapt to the local environment and contribute to biodiversity, food security, and sustainable agriculture in Vietnam. To (Tò in Vietnamese) chicken, a Vietnamese indigenous chicken breed, is popularly raised in Thai Binh province; however, little known is about the genetic diversity of this breed. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of To chicken for a better understanding of the diversity and origin of the breed. The results of sequencing showed that the mitochondrial genome of To chicken spans a total length of 16,784 base pairs and comprises one non-coding control region (known as the displacement-loop (D-loop) region), two ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. The phylogenetic tree analyses and estimated genetic distances based on 31 complete mitochondrial genome sequences indicated that To chicken has a close genetic distance with the Laotian native chicken breed, Lv'erwu breed in China, and Nicobari black and Kadaknath breeds in India. The result of the current study might be important for conservation, breeding, and further genetic studies of To chicken.

Chicken breed is one of the key factors that influence meat quality. The quality attributes of breast meat from commercial broiler (CB), Thai native chicken (NC, Leung Hang Khao), and the crossbred Korat chicken (KC) were investigated via synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) microspectroscopy, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy, and physicochemical analysis. The protein and carbonyl contents of KC and NC meats were higher than that of CB meat, but the lipid content was lower (P < 0.05). CB meat was characterized by high moisture, lightness (L*), and presence of taste-active nucleotides, namely, inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) and guanosine 5'-monophosphate (GMP). Moreover, NC meat had the highest insoluble collagen and inosine contents (P < 0.05). The predominant protein secondary structures of KC and NC meats were ß-turns and random coils, whereas α-helices were mainly found in CB meat. Based on principal component analysis, the meat quality and spectra were clearly separated by breeds. The high moisture and lipid content of meat corresponded to O-H stretching (3,203 cm-1) and C-H stretching (2,854 cm-1) in the FT-Raman spectra, whereas PO2- stretching (1,240 cm-1), measured via SR-FTIR, was well correlated with the IMP content. In addition, the FT-Raman wavenumber of 934 cm-1, indicating C-C stretching, was correlated with high water-holding capacity (WHC) in KC meat. The quality of meat from slow- and fast-growing chickens significantly varies. Vibrational spectroscopy is a powerful technique that provides insightful molecular information correlated with various meat attributes.

The slaughter performance and meat quality of two native Italian chicken breeds, Bionda Piemontese (BP, n = 64) and Bianca di Saluzzo (BS, n = 64), were investigated. Two-way ANOVA, considering breed, sex, and their interaction, was used to compare the properties of birds slaughtered at 5, 6, 7, and 8 months of age. Subsequently, data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the Duncan test to evaluate the differences between slaughter ages. The BP breed produced a better carcass yield than BS at 5, 7, and 8 months of age (p < 0.05). Breast moisture and crude protein contents were influenced by gender, and were higher in males than in females (p < 0.05). By contrast, the crude fat content was higher in females than in males (p < 0.05). The saturated fatty acid content of breast meat increased as the birds aged in both breeds (p < 0.05). The polyunsaturated fatty acid content of both breast and thigh meat was higher in males than in females (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively). In general, slaughtering at 7 months was associated with the best slaughter and meat quality characteristics in both breeds. Moreover, from a nutritional point of view, the characteristics of the meat from male birds were preferable to those of meat from females.

Nowadays, the high demand for village chickens in Malaysia leads to the fraudulent substitution of indigenous chickens with other cheaper counterparts. Discriminating different chicken breeds based on their phenotypic characteristics is one strategy to avoid chicken adulteration. The main objective of this study was to authenticate and group dominant chicken breeds in Malaysia, including commercial chickens (Cobb, Hubbard, DeKalb) and cross-bred village chickens (Ayam Kampung, Akar Putra). The further discrimination of village chickens from underaged colored broilers (UCBs) (Hubbard, Sasso) was performed based on phenotype traits. The results showed that the breed had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on phenotypic characteristics, while the sex effect was not significant for some characteristics. In the first phase, the most remarkable discriminating factors were abdominal fat weight, breast muscle weight, chest circumference, shank length, and wingspan. However, in the second phase, notable variations in phenotypic characteristics between village chickens and UCBs were not detected. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed the successful separation of village chickens from high-performance breeds (broiler and colored broiler). Nevertheless, there was overlap among observations for Sasso and village chickens, which approved the possible similarities in their phenotypic characteristics. This study showed clear breed clustering, which leads to the chicken authentication based on their phenotypic characteristics.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the precursors of germline cells that generate sperm and ova in adults. Thus, they are promising tools for gene editing and genetic preservation, especially in avian species. In this study, we established stable male and female PGC lines from 6Hungarian indigenous chicken breeds with derivation rates ranging from 37.5 to 50 percent. We characterized the PGCs for expression of the germ cell-specific markers during prolonged culture in vitro. An in vivo colonization test was performed on PGCs from four Hungarian chicken breeds and the colonization rates were between 76 and 100%. Cryopreserved PGCs of the donor breed (Partridge color Hungarian) were injected into Black Transylvanian Naked Neck host embryos to form chimeric progeny that, after backcrossing, would permit reconstitution of the donor breed. For 24 presumptive chimeras 13 were male and 11 were female. In the course of backcrossing, 340 chicks were hatched and 17 of them (5%) were pure Partridge colored. Based on the backcrossing 1 hen and 3 roosters of the 24 presumptive chimeras (16.6%) have proven to be germline chimeras. Therefore, it was proven that the original breed can be recovered from primordial germ cells which are stored in the gene bank. To our knowledge, our study is a first that applied feeder free culturing conditions for both male and female cell lines successfully and used multiple indigenous chicken breeds to create a gene bank representing a region (Carpathian Basin).

Two-dimensional quantitative NMR spectroscopy (2D qNMR) was set up and multivariate analyses were performed on metabolites obtained from breast meat extracts of broilers and four native chicken (KNC) strains. It can accurately identify more metabolites than 1D 1H NMR via separation of peak overlap by dimensional expansion with good linearity, but has a problem of numerical quantification; Complementation of 1D and 2D qNMR is necessary. Among breeds, KNC-D had higher amounts of free amino acids, sugars, and bioactive compounds than others. Noticeable differences between KNCs and broilers were observed; KNCs contained higher amounts of inosine 5'-monophosphate, α-glucose, anserine, and lactic acid, and lower amounts of free amino acids and their derivatives. The 2D qNMR combined with multivariate analyses distinguished the breast meat of KNCs from broilers but showed similarities among KNCs. Also, 2D qNMR may provide fast metabolomics information compared to conventional analysis.

The Green-legged Partridgelike fowl is an old Polish indigenous breed of chicken. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are one of the best sources of precursor cells that can be used for the conservation and proliferation of the endangered breeds of bird. Initially, the chicken PGCs colonize at the anterior extraembryonic region called "germinal crescent," and after the establishment of blood vascular circulation, they temporally circulate via the embryonic blood vascular system along with embryonic blood cells. They further colonize at the microcapillary networks of both right and left future gonadal regions. Subsequently, they migrate interstitially to reach gonadal anlages, where they begin to differentiate and eventually develop into the future ova or sperm. The basic knowledge regarding the concentration and the total number of circulating PGCs (cPGCs) throughout their circulating phase in the early embryonic stages is crucial for providing an insight into the mechanisms by which they circulate and colonize at the capillary networks of left and right future gonadal regions in each developmental stage. The present study aims to determine the most efficient developmental stage that is suitable to collect cPGCs. The concentration of cPGCs was directly measured, and total volume of embryonic blood was calculated based on the concentration of PKH26-stained embryonic blood cells which were injected 10 min before the blood sampling process in the same embryo during each stage of embryonic development from stage 13 Hamburger and Hamilton (HH; Hamburger and Hamilton, 1951) to 16 HH. Analysis of whole embryonic bloodstream revealed that at stage 14 HH of embryonic development, peak total number of cPGCs (386.3 cells/µL) and peak concentration of cPGCs (18.6 cells/µL) were observed. Later, there was a decrease in concentration, suggesting that the cPGCs might be trapped gradually by the capillary networks at the future gonadal regions after stage 15 HH.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the physical parameters and fatty acid composition and related nutritional parameters of market-procured table eggs from Milanino, Mericanel della Brianza and Valdarnese Bianca hens compared to two commercial hybrid strains' eggs to determine characterizing quality traits for traditional breeds conservation and valorization through high quality niche products. Fifty-four market eggs by three traditional breeds (Mericanel della Brianza-MRC; Milanino-MLN; and Valdarnese Bianca-VLD) and two commercial hybrid strains (Commercial Hybrid Brown-CHB; Commercial Hybrid White-CHW) have been analyzed-physical parameters, fatty acids profile and atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes were investigated. A General Linear Model-GLM was applied to data analysis with breed and genetic origin (traditional breed-TRD; commercial hybrid-HYB) as sources of variation. Two Principal Component Analyses (PCA) were carried out with physical parameters and fatty acid parameters as variables. Eggs produced by traditional breeds MRC MLN and VLD differentiate from eggs produced by commercial hybrids CHB and CHW in physical and chemical parameters (fatty acids parameters). The nutritional value of the traditional eggs has been demonstrated to be higher considering the yolk content, the PUFA fraction, the more favorable n6/n3 ratio and the atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes. Commercial layers' eggs revealed their higher commercial value based on weight, albumen content and percentage of edible content.

In poultry production, the intensive use of high-performing hybrid animals led to loss of genetic variability and a consequent lower response to climatic change and disease. Poultry biodiversity is seriously threatened, and its safeguard is a strong objective in developed countries. According to the FAO, which emphasized the importance of native breeds for its country of origin, the aim of this study was to present the first contribution on eggs quality for endangered the Siciliana chicken breed and deepen knowledge on the local Livorno breed. At 20 weeks of age, 108 laying hens (54 Siciliana breed and 54 Livorno breed) were divided into six homogeneous groups of 18 hens each and reared according to requirements imposed by the EC Regulation 889/08 for organic production. The production cycle was controlled over one year, and egg production was recorded daily by group. Eggs were collected, weighted, and measured. Physico-chemical parameter and fatty acids profile were analyzed and nutritional indexes calculated. The statistical model included the effects of breed (Siciliana, Livorno). Egg production was 190 egg/head for Siciliana and 180 for Livorno group. The results showed similar values for Siciliana and Livorno egg quality, highlighting several valuable quality traits from these breeds which might be taken into account for conservation programs.

The association between mitochondrial DNA haplotype and productive performances has been widely reported in chicken breeds. However, there has not been physiological evidence of this seen previously. In this study, chicken transmitochondrial cells were generated using the nucleus of the DF-1 cell line and mitochondria of primary cell lines derived from two native chicken breeds, Tibetan chicken and Shouguang chicken. Generally, Tibetan chicken primary cells showed a stronger metabolic capacity than Shouguang chicken primary cells. However, the Tibetan chicken cybrids had a dramatic drop in relative mtDNA copies and oxygen consumption. Higher rates of oxygen consumption (OCR) and expression levels of mitochondrial biogenesis and fusion genes were observed in Shouguang chicken cybrids, potentially reflecting that the mitochondrial DNA haplotype of Shouguang chicken had better coordination with the DF-1 nucleus than others. Meanwhile, mitonuclear incompatibility occurred in Tibetan chicken cybrids. The results demonstrate functional differences among mitochondrial DNA haplotypes and may shed light on the interaction between the mitochondria and nucleus in Gallus gallus domesticus.

BACKGROUND: The Russian White is a gene pool breed, registered in 1953 after crossing White Leghorns with local populations and, for 50 years, selected for cold tolerance and high egg production (EL). The breed has great potential in meeting demands of local food producers, commercial farmers and biotechnology sector of specific pathogen-free (SPF) eggs, the former valuing the breed for its egg weight (EW), EL, age at first egg (AFE), body weight (BW), and the latter for its yield of extraembryonic fluid (YEF) in 12.5-day embryos, ratio of extraembryonic fluid to egg weight, and embryo mass. Moreover, its cold tolerance has been presumably associated with day-old chick down colour (DOCDC) - white rather than yellow, the genetic basis of these traits being however poorly understood. RESULTS: We undertook genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for eight performance traits using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping of 146 birds and an Illumina 60KBeadChip. Several suggestive associations (p < 5.16*10- 5) were found for YEF, AFE, BW and EW. Moreover, on chromosome 2, an association with the white DOCDC was found where there is an linkage disequilibrium block of SNPs including genes that are responsible not for colour, but for immune resistance. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained GWAS data can be used to explore the genetics of immunity and carry out selection for increasing YEF for SPF eggs production.
