ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to investigate the echocardiographic changes during anesthesia induction in dogs sedated with acepromazine (0.05mg/kg) and butorphanol (0.3mg/kg) (AB). Twenty-four male dogs, with a mean weight of 12.40kg±3.1kg, were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=6). Fifteen minutes after administering pre-anesthetic medication, anesthesia with diazepam (0.5mg/kg) and etomidate (1mg/kg) (group DE); diazepam (0.5mg/kg) and ketamine (3mg/kg) (group CD); propofol (4mg/kg) (group P); or ketamine (1mg/kg) and propofol (3mg/kg) (group CP) was administered to the 6 dogs in each group. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured and echocardiography was performed immediately prior to the application of the sedation protocol (baseline), 15 minutes after sedation (M1), and immediately after anesthesia induction (M2). No significant differences were observed in SBP and in hemodynamic variables such as cardiac index, shortening fraction, and ejection fraction, between groups at all time points (M0, M1, and M2) evaluated. The SBP was significantly reduced after anesthetic induction in the dogs of the DE and CP groups. It can be concluded that the protocols DE and CP reduce similarly to SPB in dogs medicated with CD and P to SBP remain stable after anesthetic induction. All anesthetic induction protocols maintained a stable IC in premedicated dogs. None of the protocols evaluated promoted significant echocardiographic changes. Furthermore, the ketamine and diazepam combination had a negative impact on myocardial relaxation.

Background: Dioctophyma renale is a giant worm, nematode parasite, which infest dogs, rarely humans or other domestic and wild species. The life cycle is complex and infestation occurs by ingestion of aquatic oligochaete (annelid), fish and frogs. This nematode normally installs in the right kidney of dog, however, there are reports of ectopic migration, such as, for example, in the stomach, abdominal cavity, liver, bladder, ureters, urethra, scrotum, uterus, ovaries, mesenteric lymph nodes, mammary gland, thoracic and pericardial cavity. The aim of this work is to report the location of erratic Dioctophyma renale in the left testicle of a dog. Case: A mongrel dog, about 4 years old, weighing 7.7 kg, rescued from the street after being hit by a car was admitted at the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of CAV / UDESC. Clinical examination showed no significant changes, except for the crackling of pelvic bones, suggesting pelvic fracture. Pelvic radiography and abdominal ultrasound were requested, and complete blood count as pre-anesthetic evaluation was performed. The blood count showed leukocytosis with neutrophilia with a regenerative left shift. The patient was referred for pelvic fixation and in the same procedure orchiectomy was performed. The premedication was acepromazine 0.05 mg/kg and morphine 0.5 mg/kg, administrated intramuscularly. Anesthesia was induced with propofol and [...]

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of different sedation protocols on blood pressure and echocardiographic and electrocardiographic parameters in dogs. In total, 24 male mixed-breed dogs with a mean weight of 9.87±3.0kg were used.Animals were randomly divided into four groups (n=6), which were subjected to sedation using the following protocols: acepromazine (0.05mgkg-¹) and butorphanol (0.3mgkg-¹) (AB); acepromazine (0.05mgkg-¹)and methadone (0.5mgkg-¹) (AM); acepromazine (0.03mgkg-¹), methadone (0.5mgkg-¹), and midazolam (0.3mgkg-¹)(MAM); and methadone only (0.5mgkg-¹) (M). Indirect blood pressure (BP) measurements and computerized electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography (ECO) were performed immediately before the application of the sedation protocol (baseline), and the same evaluations were repeated after 15 minutes. BP decreased in groups AB, MAM, and AM compared to baseline values. Electrocardiographic measurements showed decreased heart rates (HRs) after sedation in all groups, and bradycardia was observed after sedation in two dogs from group M and one animal from group AM. The P-wave duration increased after sedation in groups AM and M. After sedation, no changes in cardiac dimensions were revealed byECO.Fractional shortening (FS) decreased after sedation in the AM group, and dogs from group AB exhibited a smaller decrease in FS compared with the other groups. The cardiac index (CI) was lower in groups AM and M than in the other groups. Animals from group AB were less resistant to examination and exhibited the most favorable sedation scores. It was concluded that the combination of acepromazine and butorphanol was the best sedation protocol for performing echocardiogram measurementsbecause dogs were less resistant to examinations and echocardiographic parameters of FS and CI remained stable.(AU)

Felines biotransforms propofol slowly developing cumulative effect. The aim this study was to develop a scheme of continuous infusion of propofol at time dependent variable rate in cats. Sixteen healthy female cats undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy and received as premedication dexmedetomidine (2.5 ?g/kg), methadone (0.5 mg/kg) and ketamine (0.5 mg/kg) administrated at intramuscular rote. After 15 minutes , the animals were allocated into two groups : Fixed Rate (GFR), which received propofol 4mg/kg, followed by continuous infusion (CI ) at the rate of 0.3 mg/kg/min for 60 minutes; and Variable Rate (GVR) receiving the same induction protocol exchange with the IC starting at 0.3 mg/ kg/min for 10 minutes, 0.25 mg/kg/min up to 25 minutes, 0.2 mg/ kg/min up to 45 minutes and 0.15 mg/kg /min to 60 min of infusion based on simulation STAMPUMP®. We evaluated the cardiac frequency (HR), respiratory rate (RR), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and maintenance of anesthesia during 60 minutes of infusion , as well as time to extubation, sternal recumbency and to full recovery. We observed similar anesthesia in both groups, but the GVR was used propofol least 30% for maintenance anesthesia. There was a reduction of HR and f in both groups after induction, with one animal the GFR developed apnea during all periods evaluated . Decreased SBP in GFR at all times in relation to the baseline...(AU)

Seeking to evaluate the cardiovascular and analgesic effects of two epidural protocols in cats undergoing OH, 16 female adult mixed-breed cats were induced to general anesthesia, and then epidural was achieved with 0,26mL kg-1 of isolated ropivacaine (GR) (0,75%) or associated with 0,1mg kg-1 morphine (GRM). ETCO2, RR, HR, SAP, T° and muscular relaxation were evaluated in baseline, 30 minutes after epidural; after skin incision, ovarian pedicles and uterine cervix ligation; end of laparohraphy; and end of surgery. They received fentanyl if SAP, HR or f, rise in 20% of baseline. At the end of OH, a multidimensional pain scale for cats was used during 12 hours, and rescued with morphine 0,2mg kg-1, when the scale score was 8 points. There were no differences in ETCO2, RR, T°C and muscular relaxation. SAP increased in both groups during the ovarian pedicle and cervix clamping. In 100% of the animals in GR and 87.5% of the GRM, it was necessary fentanyl during surgery. In 100% of GR animals was required analgesic rescue with morphine at 2 and 4 hours of postoperative evaluation, compared with 50% and 37,5% in GRM, where after the analgesic rescue, in the next hours, the sum of points was similar between groups. It was concluded that epidural administration of morphine and ropivacaine in cats submitted to OH, reduces post operatory analgesic requirements to 56,2% during the first four hours, and promote adequate analgesia for 12 hours in cats submitted to OH, when compared to ropivacaine alone.(AU)
