Background: Renal dysplasia, which has been reported in some dogs and human patients, refers to a developmental disorder of renal parenchyma due to imperfect inductive interaction between the mesonephric duct and the metanephric blastemal. In dogs, the characteristic histological findings on which diagnosis is based include (1) persistent metanephric ducts surrounded by primitive mesenchyme, (2) fetal or immature glomeruli, (3) fetal or immature tubules, and (4) anomalous presence of interstitial fibrous tissue. The aim of this study was to report the major pathological and immunohistochemical features of nine young dogs necropsied with renal dysplasia.Cases: The necropsy files from the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária (LPV) of the Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso (UFMT) were reviewed between the years 2008 and 2013. Dogs diagnosed with chronic kidney failure and macroscopic and histopathological renal lesions consistent with renal dysplasia were selected. Kidney fragments in paraffin blocks were cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using anti-vimentin and anti-cytokeratin monoclonal antibodies. The staining was considered positive for the presence of at least one renal cell marked with brown cytoplasmic staining clear and unambiguous. A total of 787 necropsies of dogs were performed. Of these, 64 had a clinical diagnosis of [...]

Background: The uterine horn agenesis or aplasia is a rare anomaly consisting of absence or incomplete development of the paramesonephric ducts that origin the uterine horns. This change occurs during fetal formation and may occur concomitantly to agenesis of the ovary and/or ipsilateral kidney. The extra-uterine pregnancy consists of fetal growth outside the uterine cavity and can occur as a tubal or abdominal pregnancy. We report here the case of a 7-years-old mix breed dog, attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, with accidental diagnosis of agenesis of uterine horn and ovaries and ectopic fetal mummification. Case: A 7-years-old mix breed dog, not spayed, was attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (HOVET-UFMT), complaining of mucous bloody vaginal discharge. The patient had regular estrus and was multiparous. There was no mating history in the last estrus neither trauma over the past months. In previous pregnancies the patient presented eutocic labors. On physical examination the dog showed apathy although it was alert, pale mucous membranes, presence of perivulvar blackish secretion and discreet abdominal enlargement. As preoperative exams, a complete blood count, liver and renal function (serum creatinine and alanine aminotransferase) were performed. It has also performed the abdominal ultrasound [...]

Background: Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant endothelial cell-derived neoplasm characterized by an intense cellular proliferation organized in a solid or cavernous pattern. Is characterized by intense cell proliferation, and organized in vascular slits, filled with blood, with fast grow and there is a high recurrence rate. This paper reports a case of multiple hemangiosarcoma in a Rufous-bellied Thrush (Turdus rufiventris). Case: A free-living Rufous-bellied Thrush (Turdus rufiventris), was attended at the veterinary hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) - Cuiabá, presenting prostration and three masses located in the following regions: left periorbital area, left lateral insertion of the beak and distal portion of the left tibia. The masses were blackened colored with an irregular aspect, and the cut surface was multiple cavity, filled with a blackened gelatinous material. The animal died during the surgical procedure and was sent to necropsy. Additionally, special immunohistochemistry staining was used in the tumors sections, with primary anti-S-100, anti-Von Willebrand Factor, anti-desmin, anti-actin, anti-cytokeratin and anti-vimentin. The three masses have rounded shape, multilobuled surface, deep red to blackened color, with skin adhered base, and, when cut, blackened color with multiple cavities filled with red to blackened gelatinous material and [...]

Background: Hemimelia is a rare anomaly in which one of paired bone is congenital or partially absent. The etiology may be related to genetic and/or environmental factors. Clinically is observed the angulation of the affected limb, resulting in functional limitations as angular deformity, lameness and decreased range of motion. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and radiographic examination that detects the complete or partial absence of the affected bone and angular deviations. We aim to report a case of a partial unilateral radial hemimelia in a feline diagnosed at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (HOVET-UFMT). Case: We attended at the HOVET-UFMT a two years old, feline, female, domestic short hair, presenting as a complaint the presence of a friable mass in the oral cavity for a year and a deformity in the left forelimb since birth, showing swallowing difficulties, lameness and difficulty support. On clinical examination, we obeserved the left forelimb flexed and deviation in the medial direction, shortening of the limb, no crepitation during handling and evident lameness. Radiographic examination in the craniocaudal and mediolateral projections of the thoracic limbs revealed the partial absence of the radius with just a trace of the proximal radial epiphysis, shortening and a marked ulnar curvature, producing a significant deviation [...]

The aim of this report is to describe the clinical, pathological and imaging findings and treatment of colitis caused by Pythium insidiosum in a canine presenting haematochezia and progressive weight loss. Through imaging, a thickening of the transverse and descending colon was observed. Histopathological analysis of the large intestine fragment revealed the presence of hyphae, confirmed by immunohistochemistry and PCR as P. insidiosum. Antifungal treatment with itraconazole implemented after partial surgical resection, resulted in control of the disease.(AU)

The primary neoplasms of peripheral nerves present with low frequency in small animals, and from about 0.5 % to neural incidence of benign and malignant tumors in dogs. Herein we report one case of a large female mongrel dog, it was eleven years old, attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (HOVET-UFMT), with formation in the thoracic region with 10 months evolution. The nodule measuring approximately five centimeters in diameter, it was attached to the subcutaneous, regular format and firm consistency. On clinical examination, there were no pain on palpation and cutaneous ulceration. After completion of hematological pre-surgical and imaging tests (thoracic radiography), with no significant change;the patient was referred to the removal of the neoformation. Before histopathological evaluation, mass was observed circumscribed by connective tissue capsule and cells arranged in multiple regular patterns occasionally in swirls. Proliferation of neoplastic cells with moderate cellular pleomorphism, eosinophilic core round to oval, strongly basophilic nucleoli and abundant cytoplasm, sometimes elongated. It presents anisocariose and obvious anisocytosis with bizarre figures. Also noted it is the presence of multifocal mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate. Thus, the conclusive diagnosis was that of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (malignant schwannoma). The surgical procedure for removal of the tumor was carried out respecting ample safety margins. For this reason, it was effective because the patient did not present local recurrence, metastases either the distance over a period of 26 months

The black hair follicular dysplasia in canine (BHFD) is a genetic and rare disorder where dogswith coats bi or tri lose their hair only in the areas of the black-hair at an early age, without racial and sexualpredilection. It is a family disorder with no current treatment, which are characterized by clusters of melanin inthe hair, melanosomes accumulation in the melanocyte (macromelanosomas) and insufficient melanin transfer tothe adjacent keratinocytes. This study aims to report a case treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the FederalUniversity of Mato Grosso (HOVET-UFMT), a bitch of the race Basset Hound, showing a drop of at the regionsof the black-hair, peeling, blistering, papules and mild itching. Through history, clinical findings, associated withtrichografy and histopathology, was established the diagnosis of BHFD. There is no specific treatment for thisskin disease, however, the clinical picture of the improvement can be observed with the palliative treatment

Background: In dogs, penectomy followed by uretrostomy has been little reported in the veterinary literature. These surgical procedures are indicated in cases of penile trauma and/or neoplasms as well in scrotal and preputial neoplasms. After uretrostomias is commonly observed bleeding site by approximately 4.2 days. However, studies reporting the incidence of UTI in the postoperative period of dogs submitted to penectomy, followed by scrotal urethrostomy have never been evaluated. Thus, the aim was report the evolution of dogs operated by this technique, theirs complications and the histological results, urinalysis and uroculture in patients with 60 days post-operative. Case: In the study period of 17 months (March 2013 to July 2014), nine dogs showed various neoplastic diseases involving the penis, prepuce, scrotum and testicles. In nine selected dogs to the study, only six were considered due to patient death before the minimum period used for postoperative evaluation. After surgery, the genital tract along the resected neoformation were conditioned to 10% formalin and sent to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory for tissue analysis in light microscopy. All patients remained in hospital in the postoperative period about a week, receiving medications intravenously, execution of dressing every 12 h and evaluation of possible postoperative complications such as dehiscence suture...(AU)

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a genetic disease which promotes malfunction of the epidermal barrier and allergic sensitization by environmental allergens. Several breeds in ages ranging from one to 3 years are predisposed. The diagnosis demands time, once CAD should be differentiated from other pruritic diseases, therefore the aim of the retrospective study to assess canine cases submitted to skin biopsies, and associate clinical and laboratory findings of the cases of CAD with other non-neoplastic dermatoses. Of the fifty-two biopsies performed, 11 dogs were diagnosed with CAD, 12 without CAD and 29 with neoplastic diseases. Pruritus was described in all atopic dogs and the onset age was 4.4 years. The dermatophytosis and Staphylococcus sp. and/or Malassezia sp. Infection were the most frequent diseases related in cases of CAD. Skin biopsy is a diagnostic tool that in association with clinical and epidemiological findings supports the DAC diagnosis, improving the quality of life of atopic dogs and their owners.

Skin biopsy is a diagnostic tool that in association with clinical and epidemiological findings supports the DAC diagnosis, improving the quality of life of atopic dogs and their owners.(AU)

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Most often, the disease is asymptomatic in dogs due to effectiveness of the immune system. By the way, numerous clinical signs can be triggered, including neuromuscular like ataxia, circling, behavioral changes, seizures, spasms and tremors. The disease usually manifests itself after immune depression, and, for this reason, usually may be associated to immunosuppressive infections, like by distemper virus and Ehrlichia canis. E. canis is an obligatory intracellular rickettsia of mature or immature hematopoietic cells and canine monocytes, and the etiologic agent of Canine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (CME). Like toxoplasmosis, CME may cause nervous signs as well. This study aims to estimate the occurrence of anti- T. gondii and anti- E. canis antibodies and characterize nervous syndromes in dogs with nervous alterations assisted at a veterinary teaching hospital. From May 2010 to December 2011, dogs with nervous alterations assisted at HOVET-UFMT were submitted to neurological evaluation for determining nervous syndromes. Serum and whole blood samples were collected for performing indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT) for T. gondii and E. canis and hematological evaluation. Prevalence of 10,3 and 94,8% were observed for T. gondii and E. canis, respectively. The most frequent syndrome was multifocal, occurring in 53,5% of the cases, followed by spinal cord alterations in 22,4%, cerebral alterations in 10,3%, paroxysmalsyndrome in 10,3% and neuropathic syndrome in 3,5% of the cases. There was no statistical significancebetween the variables analyzed (titration to T. gondii, E. canis and nervous syndromes). In conclusion, the occurrence of coinfection with T. gondii and E. canis may contribute to toxoplasmosis clinicalmanifestation, due to opportunist character of the parasite in order to the establishment of disease.(AU)

Primary bone tumors are rare in cats; they affect mainly older animals and have a predilection for the appendicular skeleton. This paper reports the case of an eighteen-month-old male mongrel cat. The patient was active and in adequate nutritional status, but had a rapidly growing mass in the right pelvic limb, which caused lameness and pain at the site. Physical and radiographic examination suggested appendicular osteosarcoma, which was subsequently confirmed by histopathology. The patient underwent amputation by hip disarticulation. Due to the low metastatic rate in this species, chemotherapy protocols were not performed. Periodic post-surgical radiographic examinations showed no evidence of metastasis. Both the low incidence of this disease in this feline species and the patient's young age justify the relevance of this report.
