Background: Nasolacrimal duct tumors are divided into primary and secondary, with primary tumors being rare in all species. Secondary involvement of the lacrimal sac and duct can occur from any skin lesion involving the eyelid and/or conjunctiva and from any neoplastic process involving the paranasal sinuses. Lacrimal sac metastatic lesions may originate from any distant site and include carcinomas or melanomas, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common type. The objectives of the present report were to describe a case of squamous cell carcinoma in the nasolacrimal duct and to emphasize the importance of a good ophthalmic evaluation. Case: A 16-year-old spayed bitch white poodle was presented to the veterinary clinic. The owner complained that the animal had epiphora and mucoid secretion in the right eye, eyelid hyperemia in both eyes, and sporadic sneezing with blood. On ophthalmic examination, the animal was initially diagnosed with nasolacrimal duct obstruction and right eye (OD) blepharitis and OU uveitis. Fourteen days after the first evaluation, the nasolacrimal duct region increased, with the presence of bloody secretion. Biomicroscopy showed nodules inside the lacrimal duct, in the punctum region. The animal was sedated to obtain a fragment of the nodule for histopathological analysis, and a subsequent oral cavity evaluation identified a nodule in the transition region between the 4th premolar and 1st molar, which was sent for cytology. Cytology of the medial corner region of the RE showed epithelial and mesenchymal cells with malignancy characteristics, and the biopsy was suggestive of malignant epithelial neoplasia (carcinoma). A surgical procedure for nodule resection was ruled out because bone involvement was extensive, and chemotherapy was selected. The patient died 2 months after the 1st consultation. The diagnosis was confirmed through necropsy via immunohistochemical tests, demonstrating squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) both in the mouth and the nasal and ocular sinuses. Discussion: The most common conditions affecting the nasolacrimal drainage system in dogs are those causing obstructions. These may be congenital, arising from a developmental defect of micropunctum or agenesis of the punctum, they may be acquired, arising from infection and inflammation. SCC is a malignant neoplasm originating in the stratified squamous epithelium. The predisposing factors in cats and dogs include lack of adnexal pigmentation and, possibly, chronic irritation of the ocular surface. A light coat is considered a relevant factor, especially in regions with little hair coverage. In addition to a mass lesion, other clinical signs of eyelid or ocular surface tumors may include epiphora, conjunctival vascular injection, mucopurulent ocular discharge, 3rd eyelid protrusion, conjunctival/corneal roughness or ulceration, and corneal neovascularization or pigmentation. Clinical presentations are nonspecific. Neoplasms, whether nasal and/or in the maxillary sinus, can invade the nasolacrimal duct and spread to the nasal cavity, and neoplasms in the nasal cavity can invade the nasolacrimal duct. Ophthalmic evaluation along with good inspection of the oral cavity is a useful tool in the diagnosis of eye neoplasms that may have effects on the oral cavity or vice versa due to the strong association between them. Early diagnosis is crucial for the clinical or surgical management of each case of ophthalmic neoplasia and for therapeutic success.

This study aimed to evaluate ultrasound findings of dogs and cats diagnosed with cholestasis, correlating concomitant alterations with species, sex, age, weight, clinical signs, and dilation of bile ducts. The biliary system of small animals is composed of the gallbladder and the biliary tree. Thus, the felines show more alterations in these structures due to their differentiated anatomy. The reduction of the bile flow, known as cholestasis, occurs as a result of numerous situations, with ultrasound being the main diagnostic exam applied in veterinary medicine. Bile ducts of 4 and 3mm diameter are considered normal for felines and canines, respectively. In this study, the biliary systems of 41 animals, including felines and canines, were evaluated using ultrasound at the Diagnostic Imaging Sector of the Veterinary Hospital from January 2019 to February 2020, demonstrating the presence of bladder stones in both populations, as well as changes in the cystic duct associated with pancreatitis in dogs.

Pancreatic cysts are rare in both humans and animals. They are defined as an enclosed structure externally surrounded by a capsule, internally coated with a cuboidal epithelium and filled with liquid or semi-solid content. This case described the clinical and pathological characteristics of a pancreatic cyst in a feline. A mixed breed cat with a history of recurrent vomiting was attended. Physical examination revealed pain on abdominal palpation. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a cystic, anechoic structure with well-defined edges located in the left cranial abdomen and in close contact with the duodenum and pancreas. Partial pancreatectomy was performed. Microscopically, the structure was surrounded by fibrous material, coated with cuboidal to columnar epithelium, and containing eosinophilic material. Although, pancreatic cyst is rare in animals, they should be included in the differential diagnosis of causes of vomiting in young cats.

Psychotria viridis Ruiz & Pav (Rubiaceae) occurs naturally throughout the Amazon and it is traditionally used by indigenous communities, being incorporated into religious use in urban contexts over the last few decades. It is known and cultivated in many regions of South America for possessing valuable bioactive alkaloids. In this paper, we described P. viridis leaf morphology, anatomy and histochemistry from three populations cultivated in the southeastern Brazil, in order to identify possible adaptations to local environment and management. All plants presented terminal stipules and basic morpho-anatomical patterns of leaves, consistent with most species of the genus, as heterogeneous dorsiventral mesophyll, uniseriate epidermis, presents large cells with prominent vacuoles and druses. Unicellular non-glandular trichomes and multicellular starry trichomes were present in the primary and secondary veins. Amphi-hypostomatic leaf pattern, not yet described for the species, was common in all studied plants. Variation in the presence of domatia in the same population indicates that this structure cannot be used for taxonomic determination of P. viridis, as already described for other species of the genus. Presence of secretory ducts and reduction in stomata density and leaf area represent the main morpho-anatomic adaptations of plants from drier and warmer climates. Histochemical tests were positive for alkaloids, polysaccharides, proteins and phenolic compounds, being negative for starch only in plants subjected to water stress. We concluded that the morpho-anatomical and histochemical alterations found in the plants of this study resulted from seasonal water deficit adaptations and to maintain or attract mutualistic organisms

Obstruction of the common bile duct is associated with high mortality and morbidity and can occur due to inflammatory diseases, cholelithiasis, neoplasias, among other less common causes. Initial clinical manifestations are nonspecific, but progression of the disease leads to jaundice, emesis, anorexia, weight loss, and stool. The diagnosis is made through laboratory tests and ultrasonography. The definition of total obstruction of the common bile duct requires surgical intervention, and the definition of the technique will depend on the possible duct clearance or reestablishment of the biliary flow through cholecystoduodenostomy, or cholecystochejunostomy, associated with a great surgical and anesthetic risk. This report presents a case of a patient with total obstruction of the common bile duct, diagnosed through ultrasonography, clinical signs and laboratory tests and their surgical resolution through the cholecystoduodenostomy technique, which proved to be effective for the patients clinical improvement.

Sialolithiasis is a condition that affects the salivary glands or their ducts, characterized by the presence of calcified structures, called sialolites, with slow and gradual growth, usually asymptomatic, hindering or impeding the normal flow of saliva. Due to the absence of reports in the national literature, the case of a 15-year-old mare who had a 13cm sialolite in the parotid duct near the face ridge for more than 2 years is described. The diagnosis was made through clinical examination: with visualization and palpation of the sialolite, dental evaluation; and complementary exams: radiography and ultrasonography. We chose surgical treatment through percutaneous access, which is the most appropriate for large stones, and Stenon's duct suture was performed, without postoperative fistulas. The assessment and dental care during the procedure was extremely important, since the dental tips facilitate the formation of the stones.(AU)

In the clinical examination was verified intense tachypnea, presence of heart murmur, normocorated mucosae, dehydration 7%. The animal was sedated to be submitted to radiographic examination of the thorax with pethidine and midazolam. Thoracic radiographs on the lateral, ventral-dorsal and orthostatic positions were realized and severe pleural effusion was observed in both hemitorax with drainage of 180 mL of lactescent fluid from the right hemithorax and 120 mL of left hemithorax liquid. Through analysis of cavity liquids the effusion was classified as chylous effusion. The hemogram showed a neutrophilic leukocytosis. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations (28 mg/ dL and 43 mg/dL, respectively) were lower than the concentrations of the cavity liquid (67 mg/dL and 722 mg/dL, respectively). Ultrasound examination revealed no mass in the thoracic cavity and no changes in the pulmonary parenchyma. The echocardiographic examination was also performed and did not reveal any cardiac alterations.[...]

A male miniature Schnauzer with cryptorchidism and a mass growth in the right inguinal canal was admitted to the clinical center of a veterinary hospital. During surgical resection of the mass, tubular formations were found, connecting the mass to the left testicle. Histopathology revealed that the tubular formations were uterine tubes and the mass was a seminoma associated with a sertolioma of the right testicle. Further analysis also showed atrophy of the left testicle. Cytogenetic evaluation revealed normal chromosomes of male gender, 78, XY, which led to the conclusion that this was a male pseudohermaphrodite.(AU)

Omalonyx geayi Tillier, 1980 was originally described on the basis of specimens from Kaw swamp, French Guiana. This species distinguished from other of Omalonyx d'Orbigny, 1837: (i) by hermaphrodite duct twice as long and sacculate, without radial ducts but a funnel-shaped insertion on the ovariotestis, and (ii) by longitudinal wrinkled folds on the phallus inner wall. Two recent collections - from Trinidad and Carauari (Amazonas, Brazil) included specimens with ovariotestis and hermaphrodite duct morphologies similar to that originally described for O. geayi, but with phallus morphology not consistent with identification as O. geayi. A further eight lots, from Suriname, Ecuador, Brazil (Amazonas and Alagoas States), Bolivia and Cayenne-Kourou Road in French Guiana comprised specimens with phallus morphology analogous to O. geayi and ovariotestis and hermaphrodite duct similar to that of other Omalonyx species. Based on histological examination, and earlier phylogenetic analyses of morphological characters, we conclude that the ovariotestis and hermaphrodite duct conditions previously described for O. geayi were based on parasitized specimens. Accordingly, O. geayi is redescribed, and new information presented on the species' wide distribution in South America.(AU)

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has become the gold standard management option for benign gallbladder (GB) disease and cholelithiasis. The aim of this randomized study was to evaluate the intraoperative complications and perioperative outcome of rabbits undergoing 3 different techniques of LC. In this study, we compared the effect of different LC techniques on changes in liver function tests (LFTs). And finally, we investigated and compared the degree of postoperative adhesions and histopathological changes of the liver bed after LC techniques. Methods:30 white male New Zealand rabbits were divided into 3 groups. Group A (n=10) Fundus-first dome-down technique by Hook dissecting instrument and Roeder Slipknot applied for Cystic Duct Ligation. The GB was dissected free from the liver bed starting at the fundus toward the GB neck using Hook electrocautery (KarlStorz 36 cm length). The cystic duct and cystic artery were ligated using extracorporeally Roeder slipknot - extracorporeal slipknot (Roeder knot). Group B (n=10) Conventional technique by Maryland dissecting forceps for GB dissection and Electrothermal Bipolar Vessel Sealing (EVBS) for Cystic duct seal. Rabbits underwent conventional technique using Bipolar Maryland dissecting forceps (maryland36 cm length) and the EVBS LigaSure Maryland Jaw 5mm-23cm (Medtronic, Dublin, Ireland) for Cystic duct seal. Group C conventional technique by Electrothermal Bipolar Vessel Sealing (EBVS) for GB dissection and EVBS for cystic duct seal. Rabbits who underwent conventional technique dissection of the gallbladder by the LigaSure Maryland Jaw 5mm-23cm (Medtronic, Dublin, Ireland) and LigaSure for cystic duct seal. The surgical procedure data were collected and analyzed (GB perforation rate, time to GB bed dissection and length of surgery, bleeding from tissues adjacent to gallbladder)Blood samples were obtained pre-operatively and on day 3, 7 and day 15 after surgery to compare liver enzyme alterations (aspartate transaminase [AST], alanine transaminase [ALT], alkaline phosphatase [ALP], bilirubin, direct bilirubin, total protein, albumin; gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), fibrinogen. The necropsy analysis was performed 15 days after surgery, and the degree of postoperative adhesions was classified from 0 to 4. Liver samples for histological examination were taken from all groups. The presence of vi siderophages was evaluated and a scale from 1 to 4 was used for the degree of fibrosis, necrosis and giant cells. Group A presented a longer GB dissection time than groups B and C. GB perforation and bleeding from tissues adjacent to GB were similar among tested groups. GGT and ALP levels increased (p0.05) on day 3 post-operatively in group A. By the 15th postoperative day, the enzymes returned to the preoperative values. The median of giant cells, Necrosis, Fibrosis and proportion of Siderophags were not influenced by the CL techniques. Transient elevation of hepatic transaminases occurred after LC in all groups. Group A had a higher adherence score than groups B and C and was associated with the least predictable technique. LC can be performed using different techniques, although the use of EBVS is highly recommended.
