Resumo

The aim of the study was to describe location, sonographic characteristics and measures of the stomach and small intestine of equines at different ages. Abdominal ultrasonography was performed on 88 healthy equines of either sex, aged 1, 7 and 15 days, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 months and 1, 3 and 5 years, with 20 animals per group. Location, characteristics and measurements of stomach, duodenum and jejunum were evaluated. Descriptive statistics were performed for each measurement and the percentile for each age was analyzed. The work showed the growth and characteristics of the organs evaluated over time. Adult animals showed a minimum of 4 duodenal movements per minute. It was possible to locate the organs evaluated in all animals. The detailed ultrasound examination of these organs allowed gathering information that could be used to assist in the care of future patients.


O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever localização topográfica, características e medidas ultrassonográficas de estômago e intestino delgado de equinos em diferentes idades. Foi realizado um exame ultrassonográfico abdominal em 20 equinos saudáveis de ambos os sexos, com idades de um, sete e 15 dias, um, dois, três, quatro, cinco, seis, sete, oito, nove, 10 e 11 meses e um, três e cinco anos. A localização, as características e as medidas de estômago, duodeno e jejuno foram avaliadas. Foi realizada a estatística descritiva para cada medida e analisado o percentil para cada idade. O trabalho mostrou o crescimento e as características dos órgãos avaliados ao longo do tempo. Animais adultos apresentaram um mínimo de quatro movimentos por minuto de duodeno. Foi possível localizar os órgãos avaliados em todos os animais. O exame ultrassonográfico detalhado desses órgãos permitiu agrupar informações que poderão ser usadas para auxiliar no atendimento a futuros pacientes.

Resumo

Purpose: Abnormal activation of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome can lead to the occurrence and progression of acute pancreatitis. This study investigated the protective effect of MCC950 on pancreatitis mice. Methods: Eighteen mice were randomly divided into control group, severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) group and SAP+MCC950 group. Serum interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured by ELISA. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was used to evaluate the pathological damage. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome and tight junction proteins in the small intestine and pancreas. Results: MCC950 could reduce the levels of IL-6 and IL-1ß in SAP mice. After treatment with MCC950, the expression levels of NLRP3 inflammasome in the pancreas of SAP mice were significantly reduced and the pathological damage to the pancreas and intestine was alleviated. Compared with the control group, the expression of tight junction protein (ZO-1,occludin and claudin-4) in the intestinal mucosa of SAP mice was decreased, and the expression of claudin-4 and occludin were upregulated after MCC950 treatment. Conclusions: MCC950 can inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation and significantly reduce the inflammatory response and delay the process of pancreatitis. It has therapeutic potential in the treatment of acute pancreatitis.

The purpose of this report is to describe the case of a surgical procedure for enterectomy ofthe small intestines, performed as treatment for an intussusception with cloacal protrusion that occurred in a red-earedslider (Trachemys scripta elegans) kept as a pet.Case: A 20-year-old red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) was taken into medical care after the owner’s observationof a cloacal protrusion that had started 72 h previously. During physical examination the protrusion was noted as an intestinalsegment of approximately 5 cm, which was not reducible. Complementary examinations, including radiography and hematological profiling, were performed and revealed no significant findings; therefore, it was decided that an exploratory celiotomywould be conducted. The patient was referred to the surgical unit for the procedure and underwent surgical anesthesia. Afterappropriate antisepsis of the surgical area, a plastron osteotomy was performed using a previously sterilized oscillatory saw ata 45º angulation. The celomatic membrane was subsequently incised to enable both cavity and intestinal inspection allowingobservation of the intussusception in the small intestine of the animal with the intussuscept segment protruding through thecloaca. The intussusception was undone, and an enterectomy was performed to remove the unviable intestine, using intestinalresection and subsequent anastomosis with simple interrupted sutures using 4-0 nylon, followed by intestinal reposition in thecavity. Resumo

This study investigated the effect of a probiotic (Bacillus subtilis DSM 17299), blend of acidifiers, and their combination on the performance of broiler chicks. Two hundred and twenty unsexed one-day-old broilers (Ross 308) were randomly distributed into four groups (55 birds per group divided into 5 replicates) as 2X2 factorial arrangement including two factors, probiotic and blend of acidifiers, each of which had two levels: yes and no. Performance was determined weekly. Haemagglutination test was performed on blood samples taken on days 28 and 42 after the birds were injected twice (days 14 and 28) with 10% suspension of sheep red blood cells (SRBC). On day 42, tissue samples taken from the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were prepared for histology via scanning electron microscopy. During the first three weeks, dietary addition of probiotic significantly (p<0.05) increased body weight gain (BWG) while acidifiers significantly lowered (p<0.01) feed conversion ratio (FCR). Antibody titer against SRBC increased remarkably (p<0.01) 15 days post the first injection when probiotic was administered. The probiotic also increased (p<0.01) the number of the duodenal goblet cells, and the density of jejunal and ileal villi. Overall, the supplementation of probiotic or acidifiers enhanced the growth performance of broiler chicks, mainly during the first three weeks of age. The probiotic also improved the immune response and intestinal morphology of broilers. However, there was no evidence of synergy when probiotic and acidifiers were co-administered.(AU)

Resumo

The experiment was conducted with 644 Ross fertilized egg by 7 treatments 4 replicates and 23 eggs in each. Seven treatments included two control with and without injection, iron sulfate, iron sulfate nanoparticles, Alimet, Alimet + iron sulfate, Alimet + iron sulfate nanoparticles. After hatching 2 mg iron nanoparticles were applied as new treatment. The highest increased in the intestinal relative weight (p < 0.05) was observed by iron+Alimet in late feeding at day old of age. Also similar trend was found in cecum and duodenum length by iron control 2 and late feeding (18 hours after hatching). The highest cecum length was found among all treatments by in ovo injection of iron nanoparticles in early feeding at 21 days of age (p < 0.05). Significantly increased the duodenum length was found by iron sulfate in early feeding at 42 days of age (p < 0.05). In ovo injection of Alimet in late feeding was resulted in decrease jejunum crypt depth at 21 days of age (p < 0.05). The results of this study have shown that the highest jejunum villi width and surface area were recorded in dietary iron sulfate nanoparticles in late feeding at 21 and 42 days of age (p < 0.05).(AU)

A ultrassonografia abdominal do trato gastrintestinal dos filhotes ainda é um desafio devido a falta de estudos demonstrando um padrão de normalidade. Foram realizados exames ultrassonográficos de 30 neonatos hígidos em seus 20 dias de vida para avaliação da espessura dos segmentos jejunais e motilidade intestinal. Não houve correlação da espessura com o sexo do neonato e a motilidade se manteve quase constante atingindo uma média de 11,2 movimentos peristálticos por minuto. Obteve-se um resultado de 0,21 cm ± 0,04 cm. As informações obtidas são relevantes em relação ao intestino delgado de pacientes neonatos, bem como sobre a motilidade intestinal.(AU)

Ultrasonographic examinations of 30 healthy neonates in their 20 days of life were performed to assess the thickness of jejunal segments and intestinal motility. There was no correlation between the thickness and the gender of the newborn and motility remained almost constant, reaching an average of 11.2 peristaltic movements per minute. A result of 0.21 cm ± 0.04 cm was obtained. The information obtained is relevant in relation to the small intestine of neonatal patients, as well as about the intestinal motility.(AU)

Resumo

Xenarthras (Mammalia, Dasypodidae) das espécies Dasypus novemcinctus e Euphractus sexcinctus tiveram sua anatomia científica estudada em relação à topografia dos intestinos delgado e grosso, suas relações peritoniais, morfologia externa e irrigação. Medidas dos diferentes segmentos intestinais e do número de vasos a eles destinados foram tomadas para fins comparativos. O método previu: fixação (formol 7%); injeção de látex; dissecação e fotodocumentação. Espacialmente, embora os intestinos sejam fixados por dupla membrana peritoneal, como em outros vertebrados, nestes a serosa conectou o duodeno, o jejuno, o íleo e os cólons em um único ligamento fixado no dorso do animal. Duodeno e pâncreas, intraperitoniais, como o reto, fixaram-se nas pelves maior e menor, respectivamente e dorsalmente. Vasos derivados do tronco celíaco mesentérico e da aorta percorreram o interior do mesoduodeno, do mesentério comum, do mesocólon e do mesorreto, estando estes, ao longo de seus trajetos, relacionados às cadeias linfonodulares intestinais. O modelo de rotação peritoneal, a morfologia externa, bem como o modelo de vascularização intestinal, foram interpretados como basais, diferindo dos vertebrados recentes, conforme o suporte literário.(AU)


Xenarthras (Mammalia, Dasypodidae) of the species Dasypus novemcinctus and Euphractus sexcinctus had their scientific anatomy studied in relation to the topography of the small and large intestines, their peritoneal relationships, external morphology and irrigation. Measurements of the different intestinal segments and the number of vessels destined for them were taken for comparative purposes. The method predicted: fixation (7% formaldehyde); latex injection; dissection and photo documentation. Spatially, the intestines, although fixed by a double peritoneal membrane, as in other vertebrates, in these, the serosa connected the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and the colon in a single ligament fixed to the animal's back. Duodenum and pancreas, intraperitoneal, like the rectum, were fixed in the major and minor pelvis respectively and dorsally. Vessels derived from the mesenteric celiac trunk and the aorta traveled through the interior of the mesoduodenum, common mesentery, mesocolon and mesoride, being related to the lymph node chains along their pathways. The peritoneal rotation model, the external morphology as well as the model of intestinal vascularization were interpreted as basal, differing from recent vertebrates, according to literary support.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different times of exposure to heat on bone parameters and organ morphometry of Cobb Slow® and Hubbard Flex® broilers exposed to high temperatures for 1, 2 or 3 h daily, from 14 days of age. A total of 1120 one-day-old male chicks (half of each line; average weight of 44 g) were housed into 32 cages with 35 birds each, in a randomized-block experimental design. From the first to the 13th day of age, the birds remained under the thermal conditions recommended for their lines; thereafter, from the 14th day, the shed was separated into four parallel sections of 5.60 × 10.20 × 2.8 m delimited by double-sided plastic curtains along the width of the shed. Cyclic heat stress was generated by average temperatures of 36 ºC from 14-20 days, 35 °C from 21-27 days, 34 °C from 28-34 days and 33 °C from 35-42 days. The total length, width, density and mineral matter of the tibia; the size of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum; and the weights of the bursa of Fabricius and spleen were measured. No interaction effect between thermal environment and line was observed. Heat stress for up to 3 h daily, from the 14th to the 41st day of age, led to a longer but narrower tibia. There was no influence on small intestine morphometry. The Hubbard line presented longer and wider tibiae as well as higher relative and absolute weights of the bursa. In conclusion, heat stress from 2 h daily modifies the structure of the tibia in broilers, which increases in length and reduces in width, but heat exposure has no influence on the small intestine or lymphoid organs. The Hubbard line shows better tibia development than the Cobb line as well as different primary lymphoid responses, represented by a heavier bursa.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de diferentes tempos de exposição ao calor sobre os parâmetros ósseos e morfometria de órgãos de frango de corte Cobb Slow® e Hubbard Flex® expostos à temperatura elevada por 1h, 2h e 3h diárias a partir de 14 dias de idade. Foram alojados 1120 pintos de cortes machos de um dia, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, sendo metade de cada linhagem (peso médio de 44g) em 32 boxes com 35 aves cada. Do primeiro ao 13º dia de idade as aves permaneceram em condições térmicas de acordo com o recomendado para a linhagem, a partir do 14º dia, o galpão foi separado em quatro seções paralelas de 5,60 x 10,20 x 2,8m delimitadas por cortinas plásticas dupla face ao longo da largura do galpão. O estresse cíclico por calor foi gerado com temperaturas médias de 14-20 dias: 36 ºC; 21-27 dias: 35 ºC; 28-34 dias: 34 ºC e 35-42 dias: 33 ºC. O comprimento total, largura, densidade e matéria mineral do osso tíbia; tamanho do duodeno, jejuno e íleo e o peso da bursa e do baço foram determinados. Não foi observado interação entre ambiente térmico e linhagens. O estresse por calor no período de até 3 horas diárias, do 14º ao 41º dia de idade aumentou o comprimento e reduziu a largura do osso tíbia. Não houve influência na morfometria do intestino delgado. A linhagem Hubbard apresentou maiores comprimento e largura da tíbia, bem como maiores pesos relativo e absoluto da bursa. Concluiu-se que o estresse por calor a partir de 2 horas diárias modifica a estrutura da tíbia de frangos de corte, com aumento de seu comprimento e redução de sua largura, porém não há influência da exposição ao calor sobre o intestino delgado e órgãos linfoides. A linhagem Hubbard apresenta melhor desenvolvimento do osso tíbia em relação à Cobb, bem como respostas linfoides primárias diferentes, representada por maior peso da bursa.(AU)

In conclusion, heat stress from 2 h daily modifies the structure of the tibia in broilers, which increases in length and reduces in width, but heat exposure has no influence on the small intestine or lymphoid organs. The Hubbard line shows better tibia development than the Cobb line as well as different primary lymphoid responses, represented by a heavier bursa.


Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de diferentes tempos de exposição ao calor sobre os parâmetros ósseos e morfometria de órgãos de frango de corte Cobb Slow® e Hubbard Flex® expostos à temperatura elevada por 1h, 2h e 3h diárias a partir de 14 dias de idade. Foram alojados 1120 pintos de cortes machos de um dia, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, sendo metade de cada linhagem (peso médio de 44g) em 32 boxes com 35 aves cada. Do primeiro ao 13º dia de idade as aves permaneceram em condições térmicas de acordo com o recomendado para a linhagem, a partir do 14º dia, o galpão foi separado em quatro seções paralelas de 5,60 x 10,20 x 2,8m delimitadas por cortinas plásticas dupla face ao longo da largura do galpão. O estresse cíclico por calor foi gerado com temperaturas médias de 14-20 dias: 36 ºC; 21-27 dias: 35 ºC; 28-34 dias: 34 ºC e 35-42 dias: 33 ºC. O comprimento total, largura, densidade e matéria mineral do osso tíbia; tamanho do duodeno, jejuno e íleo e o peso da bursa e do baço foram determinados. Não foi observado interação entre ambiente térmico e linhagens. O estresse por calor no período de até 3 horas diárias, do 14º ao 41º dia de idade aumentou o comprimento e reduziu a largura do osso tíbia. Não houve influência na morfometria do intestino delgado. A linhagem Hubbard apresentou maiores comprimento e largura da tíbia, bem como maiores pesos relativo e absoluto da bursa. Concluiu-se que o estresse por calor a partir de 2 horas diárias modifica a estrutura da tíbia de frangos de corte, com aumento de seu comprimento e redução de sua largura, porém não há influência da exposição ao calor sobre o intestino delgado e órgãos linfoides. A linhagem Hubbard apresenta melhor desenvolvimento do osso tíbia em relação à Cobb, bem como respostas linfoides primárias diferentes, representada por maior peso da bursa.

Purpose: To analyze the effects of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) in the expression of apoptosis-related genes in rat small intestine subjected to ischemia and reperfusion.Methods: Thirty anesthetized rats underwent laparotomy and were drive into five groups: control (CG); ischemia (IG); ischemia and reperfusion (IRG); IPC and ischemia (IG+IPC); IPC and ischemia and reperfusion (I/RG+IPC). Intestinal ischemia was performed by clamping the superior mesenteric artery for 60 minutes, whereas reperfusion lasted for 120 minutes. IPC was carried out by one cycle of 5 minutes of ischemia followed by 10 minutes of reperfusion prior to the prolonged 60-minutes-ischemia and 120-minutes-reperfusion. Thereafter, the rats were euthanized and samples of small intestine were processed for histology and gene expression. Results: Histology of myenteric plexus showed a higher presence of neurons presenting pyknotic nuclei and condensed chromatin in the IG and IRG. IG+IPC and I/RG+IPC groups exhibited neurons with preserved volume and nuclei, along with significant up-regulation of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl2l1 and down-regulation of pro-apoptotic genes. Moreover, Bax/Bcl2 ratio was lower in the groups subjected to IPC, indicating a protective effect of IPC against apoptosis. Conclusion: Ischemic preconditioning protect rat small intestine against ischemia/reperfusion injury, reducing morphologic lesions and apoptosis.(AU)

Background: Primary lung tumors in cats are mainly classified into adenocarcinoma arising from peripheral pulmonaryepithelium and, in a smaller number of cases, into adenosquamous or squamous carcinoma, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma,and carcinoid tumor. There are few reports in the international literature describing lung cancer metastasis to visceral organs in cats, especially with regard to squamous tumors. This report describes the clinical pathological, histological, andimmunohistochemical findings of lung squamous cell carcinoma with metastasis to small intestine in a cat.Case: A female, Siamese, unneutered, adult cat presented with an unhealed ulcerative crusted lesion on the left ear, previously diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Six months later, the cat returned presenting with increased volumein the left pelvic limb and claudication due to severe osteolysis in metatarsal and tarsal bones, as shown in radiographicexaminations. The limb was amputated forty day later, but it did not undergo histological examination. The cat died fourteendays after amputation and underwent necropsy. Macroscopically, significant changes were observed in the small intestine,including serous segmental necrotizing and hemorrhagic lesion with luminal stenosis and corrugation of mucous surface,which was covered with a fibrinopurulent pseudomembrane. Palpation of lung parenchyma showed small firm nodules.There was an ulcerative crusted lesion on the left ear. Histopatological examination revealed infiltration of pleomorphicneoplastic epithelial cells disrupting the architecture of small intestine and lung, with pronounced anisocyitosis and anisokaryosis. The present study was conducted to evaluate the performance, carcass yield, and histomorphometry of the small intestine of broilers fed yeast sugarcane supplemented with enzymatic blend from 22 to 42 days of age. Seven hundred broiler chicks were distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial design (2x3+1), two levels of the enzyme blend (0 and 200 g/ton), three protein levels (0%, 6% and 12%) and a control diet. The level of 6% yeast showed higher feed intake and weight gain after 33 days. From 22 to 42 days there was no significant effect (p<0.05) to the use of yeast in animal performance, carcass yield and cuts. At 42 days an interaction between the factors for width and crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum, respectively, was observed. The inclusion of yeast in the diets for broilers from 22 to 42 days did not affect the performance and yield of the carcass. Yeast increased the muscle wall of the jejunum. The use of the enzymatic blend did not influence performance but affected the integrity of the intestinal mucosa.(AU)
