ABSTRACT: Sapajus libidinosus is a New World primate belonging to the Cebidae family that lives in the caatinga and cerrado, which are known Brazilian biomes. It is currently classified as near threatened, almost endangered, by the main animal protection organizations. Knowledge of biochemistry, the C-reactive protein, and the proteinogram are important for the preservation of this species. Our study established reference intervals for several biochemical variables and the proteinogram. For this purpose, blood samples were collected from 50 S. libidinosus monkeys (25 males and 25 females) kept in captivity at the Brazilian state of Paraíba. Descriptive analysis and reference intervals were estimated following the guidelines of the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology, using the Reference Value Advisor 2.1 software. In the overall population (n=50), significant differences (P < 0.05) were noted for creatinine and total proteins when considering the age factor (higher in adults), as well as for albumin and indirect bilirubin (higher in juveniles). Sex-associated differences (females versus males, P < 0.05) were reported for serum urea and creatinine (higher in males), as well as for albumin and Beta-Globulins (higher in females). In conclusion, to the authors' best knowledge, the present results are innovative and can be used as reference intervals for assessing the animals' health status. Moreover, it is also pioneer in determining the C-reactive protein in this species. It is important to emphasize that gender and age categories can have an influence and should be considered when interpreting the tests results.


RESUMO: O Sapajus libidinosus é um primata do novo mundo pertencente à família Cebidae que habita os biomas da caatinga e cerrado do Brasil. Atualmente esta classificado como quase ameaçado pelos principais orgãos de proteção animal. O conhecimento da bioquímica sérica, proteína C reativa e proteinograma são importantes na preservação desta espécie. O nosso estudo tem como objetivo determinar os intervalos de referência para várias variáveis bioquímicas e proteinograma. Para isso, foram colhidas amostras de sangue de 50 macacos da espécie S. libidinosus (25 machos e 25 fêmeas) mantidos em cativeiro no estado da Paraíba, Brasil. A análise descritiva e os cálculos dos intervalos de referência foram estimados segundo as diretrizes da Sociedade Americana de Patologia Clínica Veterinária com o uso do software Reference Value Advisor 2.1. Na população total (n=50), considerando o factor idade, foram observadas diferenças significativas (P < 0,05) para a creatinina e proteínas totais (valores superiores nos adultos) e para a albumina e bilirrubina indirecta (valores superiores nos jovens). Foram encontradas diferenças associadas ao sexo (fêmeas versus machos, P < 0,05) para a ureia e creatinina séricas (valores superiores nos machos) e albumina e Beta-Globulinas (valores superiores nas fêmeas). Conclui-se que, tanto quanto é do conhecimento dos autores, os resultados deste estudo são inovadores e podem ser utilizados como intervalos de referência para avaliação do estado de higidez dos animais e é pioneiro na determinação da proteína C reativa nesta espécie. É importante salientar que o sexo e a faixa etária podem ter influência e devem ser levados em consideração pelos profissionais na interpretação dos exames.

Resumo

The identification of putative prognostic factors in canine mammary neoplasms (CMNs) has been focused on tissue-specific biomarkers, but the serum biomarkers, including cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3), c-reactive protein (CRP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) have been demonstrated to display clinical application in cases of CMNs. The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of these serum biomarkers and their association with well-established prognostic factors in CMNs. Samples from 15 female canines with CMNs and 15 clinically healthy ones were collected. The results were evaluated using the Tukey's, Pearson, or Spearman tests. The cut-off point, sensitivity, specificity, and area under curve (AUC) were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis in a logistic regression model (P<0.05). The levels of CA 15-3, CRP and LDH were significantly higher in the serum of female dogs with CMNs compared to the healthy ones. Moreover, these factors were positively correlated with ulceration, tumor size, histopathological grade, metastatic lymph node, and clinical staging. Female dogs with CMNs were found to exhibit highest serum levels of CA 15-3, CRP, and LDH. Therefore, they can be applied to improve the efficacy of the diagnosis and prognostic evaluation in casas of CMNs.(AU)

Resumo

Background: Myelitis is the inflammation of the spinal cord parenchyma alone, whereas meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges. Steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) is a meningomyelitis in which the major lesions involve the meninges, not the spinal cord parenchyma, and respond well to glucocorticoid treatment. However, myelitis in dogs has rarely been reported, and myelitis with a good response to glucocorticoid treatment without relapse has not been reported. This report describes 5 cases of steroid-responsive myelitis (SRM) in dogs. Cases: Case 1. A 8-year-old intact female Cocker Spaniel presented with progressive nonambulatory paraplegia. Whole spinal parenchymal lesions were identified using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. Mononuclear pleocytosis with increased total protein levels was the only abnormal finding on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Prednisolone (PDS) was administered followed by dose tapering according to therapeutic response. Cyclosporine was administered until the termination of PDS. Since then, no recurrence of neurological symptoms has been observed. Follow-up MRI and CSF analysis revealed resolution of previously observed abnormal findings. Case 2. A 2-year-old intact female Maltese presented with non-progressive paraparesis. A spinal parenchymal lesion in the lumbosacral region was observed on MRI. PDS was administered and slowly tapered at approximately 3-week intervals. No recurrence of neurological symptoms was observed after the treatment. Case 3. A 6-year-old intact female Miniature Pinscher presented with neck pain, along with leukocytosis and neutrophilia. Cervical spinal parenchyma lesions were revealed through MRI. Increased total protein concentration with mixed cell pleocytosis was observed on CSF analysis. Immunomodulatory therapy, similar to that in case 2, was initiated. A second MRI and CSF analysis revealed an improvement in the previously observed abnormalities. Case 4. A 2-year-old, intact female Toy Poodle presented with acute paraplegia and back pain. Lesions were observed in the spinal parenchyma at the T12-L3 levels on MRI. The treatment was conducted as in case 2. During treatment, neurological symptoms, including paraplegia and back pain, were not observed. Follow-up MRI revealed improvement in the spinal lesion. Case 5. A 6-month-old, castrated male Standard Poodle presented with progressive paraparesis. On MRI, lesions were observed in the T11-T13 regions. Immunomodulation therapy, similar to that in case 2, was initiated. No recurrence of neurological symptoms was observed after treatment initiation Discussion: SRM is similar to SRMA in terms of good steroid-responsiveness and noninfectious inflammation etiology; however, it does not exactly satisfy the diagnostic criteria for SRMA, nor does it progress similarly. The characteristics of SRM that do not satisfy the diagnostic criteria of SRMA include the absence of fever, C-reactive protein elevation, hyperglobulinemia, and relapse, and the presence of spinal parenchymal lesions without parenchymal or meningeal enhancement on MRI. It is also a seemingly different from spinal cord-only meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin due to its better treatment response and prognosis. However, the dogs in the present report with SRM satisfied the diagnostic criteria for transverse myelitis in human patients. Therefore, SRM, including good steroid responsiveness and good prognosis without relapse, may represent a novel type of meningomyelitis.

Background: Anaplasmosis, also called gall sickness or tropical bovine ehrlichiosis, is an infectious disease caused by species belonging to the genus Anaplasma in domestic and wild animals in tropical and subtropical regions. Anaplasma ovis and A. phagocytophilum are important pathogens of sheep. A. ovis is considered the most common species affecting sheep. The infection is usually subclinical and progresses with high fever, anaemia, icterus, weight loss and abortions. This study aimed to investigate changes in cardiac damage markers, oxidative stress and antioxidant status, cytokines, and acute phase proteins in sheep naturally infected with A. ovis. Materials, Methods & Results: For this purpose, a total of 40 animals, including 20 healthy sheep and 20 sheep infected with anaplasmosis, were used. A. ovis was diagnosed based on clinical findings and peripheral blood smear. Blood smears were prepared from the ear vein. The smears were stained with Giemsa and examined for the presence of Anaplasma spp. Infection was also confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. The genomic DNA was isolated from blood, and the MSP-4 gene region was amplified as A. ovis specific target gene. Twenty clinically healthy sheep of the same age group, reared under the same conditions and testing negative in the molecular assessment were used as controls. Blood samples were collected from the cephalic vein and and centrifuged to obtain serum. The serum stored at -20°C until the analysis stage. Serum samples were used for the analysis of cardiac damage markers [troponin I (cTnI), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate transaminase (AST)], oxidative stress parameters [malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)], cytokines [interleukins IL-6, IL-1ß and IL-10, tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ)] and acute phase proteins [C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp)]. cTnI and CK-MB levels were measured using a chemiluminescent immunoassay. MDA, TAS, SOD, CAT, GPx, TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ, SAA and Hp levels were measured by an ELISA reader. LDH, AST and CRP levels were measured in an autoanalyzer. cTnI and LDH levels were significantly increased in the infected animals compared to the healthy ones (P < 0.05). The concentration of AST was decreased in infected animals. MDA, TAS, SOD, CAT and GPx levels were significantly increased in the infected animals compared to the healthy ones (P < 0.05). The levels of the inflammatory parameters such as TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-10 and IFN-γ were significantly increased in the infected animals compared to the healthy ones (P < 0.05). Hp level were significantly increased in the infected group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant change in CK-MB, SAA and CRP concentrations in the infected animals (P > 0.05). Discussion: Ovine anaplasmosis is an obligate intracellular arthropod disease that causes widespread changes in haematobiochemical, immune response and oxidative stress parameters. Cardiac damage is often overlooked in field conditions due to the lack of adequate knowledge about the pathophysiology of the disease. Our results showed that A. ovis infection leads to significant changes in cardiac biomarkers and that the parasite can cause cardiac dysfunction. This is the first report on cardiac damage markers in Anaplasma-infected sheep. Additionally, the levels of proinflammatory and oxidative stress markers that may cause functional disorders were also found to be increased. Thus, measuring markers of cardiac function, oxidative stress and inflammation can be a useful tool in the early diagnosis of ovine anaplasmosis.

Purpose: Motor function is restored by axonal sprouting in ischemic stroke. Mitochondria play a crucial role in axonal sprouting. Taurine (TAU) is known to protect the brain against experimental stroke, but its role in axonal sprouting and the underlying mechanism are unclear. Methods: We evaluated the motor function of stroke mice using the rotarod test on days 7, 14, and 28. Immunocytochemistry with biotinylated dextran amine was used to detect axonal sprouting. We observed neurite outgrowth and cell apoptosis in cortical neurons under oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD), respectively. Furthermore, we evaluated the mitochondrial function, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PCG-1α), transcription factor A of mitochondria (TFAM), protein patched homolog 1 (PTCH1), and cellular myelocytomatosis oncogene (c-Myc). Results: TAU recovered the motor function and promoted axonal sprouting in ischemic mice. TAU restored the neuritogenesis ability of cortical neurons and reduced OGD-induced cell apoptosis. TAU also reduced reactive oxygen species, stabilized mitochondrial membrane potential, enhanced ATP and mtDNA content, increased the levels of PGC-1α, and TFAM, and restored the impaired levels of PTCH1, and c-Myc. Furthermore, these TAU-related effects could be blocked using an Shh inhibitor (cyclopamine). Conclusion: Taurine promoted axonal sprouting via Shh-mediated mitochondrial improvement in ischemic stroke.

Resumo

Purpose: To explore the potential impact of traditional Chinese herb FuZhengHuaYuJiangZhuTongLuo recipe (FZHY) on renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) at cellular and molecular levels. Methods: Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) rats were established as the RIF mo el in vivo. The rats were given intragastric administration with FZHY once a day for consecutive 7, 14 and 21 days, respectively. The renal function parameters and inflammation indicators in kidney tissues were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the CD4+/CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood was detected using flow cytometry, the renal fibrosis degree was estimated using Masson's staining, and the fibrosis-related genes' expression was detected using quantitative polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry analyses. Results: FZHY prescription reduced the serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen, decreased the levels of c-reactive protein, interleukin-1, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in kidney tissues, and increased the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood. FZHY prescription suppressed the renal tissue fibrosis and reduced the levels of laminin, fibronectin, collagen I and collagen III. Conclusions: FZHY prescription suppressed the renal fibrosis and improved the condition of "Healthy Qi Deficiency and Evil Qi Excess" in rats with UUO, which may provide an effective method for CKD treatment.

Resumo

A esquistossomose é uma doença parasitária acometida por milhões de pessoas no mundo. Essa parasitose é transmitida por caramujos que servem de hospedeiros intermediários de helmintos digenéticos. A identificação correta das espécies transmissoras pode auxiliar no conhecimento epidemiológico da doença. Contudo, métodos convencionais de classificação podem ter resultado duvidoso, devido à variação intraespecífica entre os espécimes. Em virtude disso, esta revisão teve como objetivo descrever as principais técnicas moleculares que podem ser aplicadas, assim como o aprimoramento dos métodos ao longo do tempo. A PCR é uma técnica desenvolvida através da polimerização de DNA em cadeia realizada in vitro, onde se amplifica o DNA em múltiplas cópias, por replicação enzimática, sem necessidade de um organismo vivo. Na PCR, em tempo real, as fases de amplificação, detecção e quantificação são totalmente automatizadas, ocorrendo em simultâneo. Com a evolução da técnica convencional, foi surgindo a Proteína C Reativa ­ Polimorfismo de Comprimento de Fragmento de Restrição (PCR-RFLP), os microssatélites, e a PCR-RAPD. Através dessas variantes foi possível classificar, com precisão, as espécies transmissoras, fazer as análises da variabilidade genética intraespecífica e ampliar os estudos filogenéticos das populações. O conhecimento da aplicação de técnicas moleculares pode auxiliar em pesquisas relacionadas à epidemiologia e ao controle populacional dos vetores transmissores da esquistossomose mansônica.


Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. This parasitosis is transmitted by snails that serve as intermediate hosts for digenetic helminths. The correct identification of the transmitting species can help in the epidemiological knowledge of the disease. However, conventional methods of classification may present questionable results due to intraspecific variation between specimens. As a result, this review aimed to describe the main molecular techniques that can be applied, as well as describe the improvement of the methods over time. PCR is a technique developed through the polymerization of DNA strands carried out in vitro, where it amplifies the DNA in multiple copies by enzymatic replication, without needing a living organism. In real-time PCR, amplification, detection and quantification phases are fully automated, occurring simultaneous. The evolution of the conventional technique resulted in the advent of Protein C Reactive - Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), microsatellites, and Protein C Reactive ­ Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (PCR-RAPD). Through these variants it was possible to accurately classify the transmitting species, perform the analysis of intraspecific genetic variability and expand the phylogenetic studies of the populations. Knowledge of the application of molecular techniques can assist in research related to the epidemiology and population control of these vectors that transmit schistosomiasis mansoni.

Malnutrition occurs when the supply of available nutrients is less than organic demand. It is an underdiagnosed problem in veterinary medicine and can result in several negative metabolic consequences, with greater morbidity and mortality. Currently, the classification of nutritional status (NS) is performed subjectively in veterinary medicine, so studies and discoveries about laboratory markers (objectives) of malnutrition are desirable. This study evaluated the correlations between several laboratory variables (practical and low cost measurements) and the nutritional status (NS) of 246 dogs from a veterinary school hospital in southern Brazil. In this way, the laboratory profile of malnutrition in this population is evident. NS was classified by body condition score (BCS) and muscle mass score (MMS). A patient was considered to be malnourished if the BCS was less than 3 (values from 1 to 9). The laboratory variables analyzed were hemogram, cholesterol, total protein (TP), albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), CRP/albumin ratio, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin (TF), transferrin saturation index (TSI), and transthyretin. The means and standard deviations of the variables, correlation analyses, and comparative analyses (Kruskal-Wallis in α = 5%) were calculated. This research aimed to identify objective and practical malnutrition markers that help in the elaboration of a protocol for nutritional evaluation in diseased dogs. Low values of TF, TIBC, TP, hemogram, and TSI elevation were indicative of malnutrition. Additionally, cholesterol and albuminemia are not good markers of malnutrition in dogs with systemic diseases. A desnutrição ocorre quando a oferta de nutrientes disponíveis é inferior à demanda orgânica. É um problema subdiagnosticado em medicina veterinária e pode resultar em diversas consequências metabólicas negativas, com maior morbidade e mortalidade. Atualmente, a classificação do estado nutricional (EN) é feita subjetivamente na medicina veterinária, de maneira que estudos e descobertas sobre marcadores laboratoriais objetivos de desnutrição são desejáveis. O propósito da pesquisa foi encontrar marcadores de desnutrição objetivos e práticos que ajudem na elaboração de protocolos de avaliação nutricional em cães doentes. Este estudo avaliou as correlações entre diversas variáveis laboratoriais (de mensurações práticas e de baixo custo) com o estado nutricional (EN) de 246 cães deum hospital veterinário escola do sul do Brasil, evidenciando o perfil laboratorial da desnutrição desta população. O EN foi classificado por meio do escore de condição corporal (ECC) e escore de massa muscular (EMM). Foram considerados desnutridos os animais com ECC ≤ 3 (Laflamme, 1997) ou EMM ≤2 (World Small Animal Veterinary Association [WSAVA], 2013). Malnutrition occurs when the supply of available nutrients is less than organic demand. It is an underdiagnosed problem in veterinary medicine and can result in several negative metabolic consequences, with greater morbidity and mortality. Currently, the classification of nutritional status (NS) is performed subjectively in veterinary medicine, so studies and discoveries about laboratory markers (objectives) of malnutrition are desirable. This study evaluated the correlations between several laboratory variables (practical and low cost measurements) and the nutritional status (NS) of 246 dogs from a veterinary school hospital in southern Brazil. In this way, the laboratory profile of malnutrition in this population is evident. NS was classified by body condition score (BCS) and muscle mass score (MMS). A patient was considered to be malnourished if the BCS was less than 3 (values from 1 to 9). The laboratory variables analyzed were hemogram, cholesterol, total protein (TP), albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), CRP/albumin ratio, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin (TF), transferrin saturation index (TSI), and transthyretin. The means and standard deviations of the variables, correlation analyses, and comparative analyses (Kruskal-Wallis in α = 5%) were calculated. This research aimed to identify objective and practical malnutrition markers that help in the elaboration of a protocol for nutritional evaluation in diseased dogs. É um problema subdiagnosticado em medicina veterinária e pode resultar em diversas consequências metabólicas negativas, com maior morbidade e mortalidade. Atualmente, a classificação do estado nutricional (EN) é feita subjetivamente na medicina veterinária, de maneira que estudos e descobertas sobre marcadores laboratoriais objetivos de desnutrição são desejáveis. O propósito da pesquisa foi encontrar marcadores de desnutrição objetivos e práticos que ajudem na elaboração de protocolos de avaliação nutricional em cães doentes. Este estudo avaliou as correlações entre diversas variáveis laboratoriais (de mensurações práticas e de baixo custo) com o estado nutricional (EN) de 246 cães deum hospital veterinário escola do sul do Brasil, evidenciando o perfil laboratorial da desnutrição desta população. ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the morphological, biochemical, and histological effects of aqueous extracts of peanut (skinless and added to 1% skin) in Swiss mice submitted to a high-fat diet. Methods: Forty male Swiss mice were divided into four groups (n=10 per group): GI) normocaloric diet; GII) high-fat diet; GIII) high-fat diet + 0.5 mL of peanut extract; GIV) high-fat diet + 0.5 mL of peanut extract + 1% peanut skin. The animals were weighed weekly and euthanized after 12 weeks for histopathological and biochemical analyses. The study was approved by the Animal Use Ethics Committee. Results: The animals in the GIV group had higher body weight when compared to the other ones. Increase in total cholesterol in GIII, increase in blood glucose in groups GII, GIII and GIV, decrease in serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentration in groups GI and GIV and increase in serum concentration of C-reactive protein in GII were seen. The presence of vacuolar fat deposits was found in animal livers from GII. Conclusions: The extracts improved the plasma concentrations of animals that received a high-fat diet, including preventing morphological damage to liver tissue. These benefits were enhanced by the association of peanut shells with the extract.

Bone trauma triggers an acute inflammatory response, which can alter the serum concentration of acute-phase proteins (PFA). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PFA measurement as a laboratory biomarker for inflammation related to bone regeneration. A partial ostectomy of the right radius was performed on 22 young male rabbits. The complete blood count, albumin, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, C-reactive protein, and transferrin levels were recorded and correlated with the radiographic evolution of bone healing. Statistically the best correlations with the inflammatory process and radiological findings were reported with haptoglobin and transferrin compared to the other measured PFAs. Haptoglobin and transferrin showed a maximum peak 24 and 36 hours after surgery, respectively. Transferrin displayed signs of decrease in the first 6 hours after surgery, in advance of the leukocyte response. The measurement of acute-phase proteins proved to be viable, considering the conditions in which the present study was carried out. Among all variables studied, haptoglobin and transferrin showed best correlation with the inflammatory process of bone healing. Additional studies are needed to determine the sensitivity of acute-phase proteins as predictors of complications in the treatment of fractures.(AU)


Os traumas ósseos desencadeiam resposta inflamatória aguda e consequentemente alteram a concentração sérica das proteínas de fase aguda (PFA), podendo essas representarem um parâmetro para avaliação da evolução do processo inflamatório relacionado à cicatrização óssea, assim como complicações. Objetivou-se avaliar a inter-relação da mensuração de PFAs com a repação óssea em coelhos submetidos à ostectomia parcial do rádio. Foram utilizados 22 coelhos, machos, jovens (160 a 180 dias) e peso médio (3,8 ± 0,3). Para acompanhamento da evolução do processo inflamatório foram realizados hemograma completo e mensuração de albumina, ceruloplasmina, haptoglobina, proteína C reativa e transferrina, além do acompanhamento radiológico. Foi observado a melhor correlação da haptoglobina e da transferrina junto ao processo inflamatório e achados radiológicos frente às demais PFAs mensuradas. A haptoglobina apresentou pico máximo 24 horas do pós-operatório e a transferrina após 36 horas, entretanto, essa última já mostrou indícios de diminuição nas primeiras 6 horas do pós-cirúrgico, antecipadamente à resposta leucocitária. Nas condições em que o presente estudo foi realizado, a mensuração das proteínas de fase aguda mostrou-se factível. Das proteínas estudadas, a haptoglobina e transferrina foram as que mostraram maior correlação com o processo inflamatório da cicatrização óssea. Estudos adicionais são necessários para determinar a sensibilidade das proteínas de fase aguda como previsores de complicações do tratamento das fraturas.(AU)

ABSTRACT Purpose: The rat cervicitis model was established with 20% phenol glue to explore the therapeutic effect of Kangfuxiaomi shuan II on rat cervicitis and its mechanism. Methods: After modeling, the rats were treated with Shuangzuotai suppository (37.84 mg/kg), Kangfuxiaoyan shuan (205.6 mg/kg) and Kangfuxiaomi shuan II (40, 80, 160 mg/kg). The histopathological changes and injury degree of cervix in rats were evaluated by vulvar inflammation score and organ index. The therapeutic effect of Kangfuxiaomi shuan II on cervicitis was evaluated by detecting the levels of copper-protein (CP), C-reactive protein (CRP), Rat interleukin 6 (IL-6), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and epidermal growth factor (EGF), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in cervical tissue. Results: Compared with the model group, the vulvar inflammation score and cervical index of rats in other groups decreased significantly (P<0.01). Kangfuxiaomi shuan II could significantly reduce the levels of CP, CRP, and MDA in serum of rats with cervicitis, and significantly increase the activity of SOD in serum of rats with cervicitis (P<0.01). The levels of EGF and iNOS in cervical tissue of rats also increased in different degrees, while the level of COX-2 decreased significantly (P<0.01), which significantly improved the pathological degree of vulvar inflammation in rats with cervicitis. Conclusions: Kangfuxiaomi shuan II has a certain therapeutic effect on cervicitis in rats, and its mechanism may be related to the regulation of inflammatory cytokine network and immunity.

Five selected heptapeptides were considered mimetic to Cfv-NCTC 10354 based on the results of bioinformatics analysis and assays with hyperimmune serum and cervicovaginal mucus obtained from heifers. ALASLPL and LSYLFPP were the most reactive peptides and considered promising as possible mimetic immunogens for C. fetus subsp. venerealis.

The black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) stands out as a forage of great importance in Brazilian agriculture. However, the productivity and quality of this forage can be affected by abiotic factors, such as temperature and water availability, which affect the physiological processes and facilitate the accumulation of free radicals (reactive oxygen species - ROS). Thus, the objective of this study was to understand the biochemical changes in black oat plants subjected to water deficit at different temperatures. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse in two experimental periods, which presented an average temperature of 20 °C and 24 °C, respectively. Black oat seeds, of the variety IAPAR 61, were sown in pots and the plants were irrigated for 60 days. After which, the pots were covered with plastic bags and the irrigation was suspended. The analyses were carried out in five periods of evaluation - M1: plants before the suspensionof irrigation, M2: plants at the first wilting point, M3: three days after plastic removal and irrigation return, M4: four days after M3 and before the second suspension of irrigation, and M5: the second wilting point. The levels of total protein and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activity of the enzymes catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), were analyzed. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replications, in a factorial scheme of average temperature × water management × periods of evaluation, and the means were compared by Tukey's test at 5%. In response to water deficiency and temperature increase, black oat plants increased their levels of total soluble proteins, and there was greater lipid peroxidation due to the increase in malondialdehyde content. There was no change in the activity of the enzymes catalase and ascorbate peroxidase under water deficit, and these activities decreased with increasing temperature.


A aveia-preta (Avena strigosa Schreb.) destaca-se como uma forragem de grande importância na agricultura brasileira. Porém, a produtividade e a qualidade dessa forragem podem ser afetadas por fatores abióticos, como temperatura e disponibilidade de água, que afetam os processos fisiológicos e facilitam o acúmulo de radicais livres (espécies reativas de oxigênio - ROS). Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi compreender as alterações bioquímicas em plantas de aveia preta submetidas ao déficit hídrico em diferentes temperaturas. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação em dois períodos experimentais, os quais apresentaram temperatura média de 20 °C e 24 °C, respectivamente. Sementes de aveia preta, variedade IAPAR 61, foram semeadas em vasos e as plantas irrigadas por 60 dias. Depois disso, os vasos foram cobertos com sacos plásticos e a irrigação foi suspensa. As análises foram realizadas em cinco períodos de avaliação - M1: plantas antes da suspensão da irrigação, M2: plantas no primeiro ponto de murcha, M3: três dias após a retirada do plástico e retorno da irrigação, M4: quatro dias após M3 e antes do segundo suspensão da irrigação e M5: o segundo ponto de murcha. Foram analisados os níveis de proteína total e malondialdeído (MDA) e a atividade das enzimas catalase (CAT) e ascorbato peroxidase (APX). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições, em esquema fatorial temperatura média × manejo da água × períodos de avaliação, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5%. Em resposta à deficiência hídrica e ao aumento da temperatura, as plantas de aveia preta aumentaram seus níveis de proteínas solúveis totais e houve maior peroxidação lipídica devido ao aumento do teor de malondialdeído. Resumo

The black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) stands out as a forage of great importance in Brazilian agriculture. However, the productivity and quality of this forage can be affected by abiotic factors, such as temperature and water availability, which affect the physiological processes and facilitate the accumulation of free radicals (reactive oxygen species - ROS). Thus, the objective of this study was to understand the biochemical changes in black oat plants subjected to water deficit at different temperatures. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse in two experimental periods, which presented an average temperature of 20 °C and 24 °C, respectively. Black oat seeds, of the variety IAPAR 61, were sown in pots and the plants were irrigated for 60 days. After which, the pots were covered with plastic bags and the irrigation was suspended. The analyses were carried out in five periods of evaluation - M1: plants before the suspensionof irrigation, M2: plants at the first wilting point, M3: three days after plastic removal and irrigation return, M4: four days after M3 and before the second suspension of irrigation, and M5: the second wilting point. The levels of total protein and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activity of the enzymes catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), were analyzed. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replications, in a factorial scheme of average temperature × water management × periods of evaluation, and the means were compared by Tukey's test at 5%. In response to water deficiency and temperature increase, black oat plants increased their levels of total soluble proteins, and there was greater lipid peroxidation due to the increase in malondialdehyde content. There was no change in the activity of the enzymes catalase and ascorbate peroxidase under water deficit, and these activities decreased with increasing temperature.(AU)


A aveia-preta (Avena strigosa Schreb.) destaca-se como uma forragem de grande importância na agricultura brasileira. Porém, a produtividade e a qualidade dessa forragem podem ser afetadas por fatores abióticos, como temperatura e disponibilidade de água, que afetam os processos fisiológicos e facilitam o acúmulo de radicais livres (espécies reativas de oxigênio - ROS). Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi compreender as alterações bioquímicas em plantas de aveia preta submetidas ao déficit hídrico em diferentes temperaturas. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação em dois períodos experimentais, os quais apresentaram temperatura média de 20 °C e 24 °C, respectivamente. Sementes de aveia preta, variedade IAPAR 61, foram semeadas em vasos e as plantas irrigadas por 60 dias. Depois disso, os vasos foram cobertos com sacos plásticos e a irrigação foi suspensa. As análises foram realizadas em cinco períodos de avaliação - M1: plantas antes da suspensão da irrigação, M2: plantas no primeiro ponto de murcha, M3: três dias após a retirada do plástico e retorno da irrigação, M4: quatro dias após M3 e antes do segundo suspensão da irrigação e M5: o segundo ponto de murcha. Foram analisados os níveis de proteína total e malondialdeído (MDA) e a atividade das enzimas catalase (CAT) e ascorbato peroxidase (APX). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições, em esquema fatorial temperatura média × manejo da água × períodos de avaliação, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5%. Em resposta à deficiência hídrica e ao aumento da temperatura, as plantas de aveia preta aumentaram seus níveis de proteínas solúveis totais e houve maior peroxidação lipídica devido ao aumento do teor de malondialdeído. Não houve alteração na atividade das enzimas catalase e ascorbato peroxidase sob déficit hídrico, sendo que essas atividades diminuíram com o aumento da temperatura.(AU)

Mastitis is a mammary gland inflammation that is very common worldwide, mostly caused by bacteria, and causes enormous economic losses. Many microorganisms cause this disease. The most common causes of mastitis by these microorganisms are Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae). The anti-inflammatory properties of transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß include: 1) limiting interferon (IFN)-γ production; 2) increasing the expression of the interleukine (IL)-1 receptor antagonist; 3) inhibiting macrophage production of chemokines, pro-inflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide, and reactive oxygen intermediates; and 4) increasing macrophage clearance of bacterial debris and damaged parenchymal cells. It is stated that cytokines and milk composition change in case of mastitis. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the changes in milk TGF-ß1 and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α concentrations and milk composition in mixed infections caused by three pathogens causing mastitis. In this study, milk samples from 90 cows were divided into 5 groups. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and TGF-ß1 concentrations and milk composition were determined in these milk samples. The California Mastitis Test (CMT) was applied to the cows included in the study and scoring was done. According to the CMT results of the milk samples taken, CMT(-) cows were included in group 1 (n = 22). Those with the CMT(+) were sent to the microbiology laboratory for analysis within 2 h. After the bacteria was determined, combination groupings were formed. Group 2 (n = 17), in which S. aureus and E. coli grew together, group 3 (n = 21), in which S. aureus and S. agalactiae grew together, group 4 (n = 8), in which S. agalactiae and E. coli grew together in milk samples, and milk samples without any bacterial growth in CMT (+) formed group 5 (n = 22), respectively. Somatic cell count was measured with the DeLaval Cell Counter® (Cell Counter DCC) device. Mineral matter, fat, protein, lactose, electrical conductivity and specific gravity were measured in milk samples using Lactoscan Milk Analyzer (Milkotronic/EUROPE). Milk samples were then stored at -80°C to measure TGF-ß1 and TNF-α. Tumor necrosis factor-α and TGF-ß1 concentrations in milk samples were measured using ELISA kits (Sunred Biological Technology). Changes in milk TNF-α and TGF-ß1 concentration and milk composition were determined in milk samples with mastitis caused by mixed infection. The TNF-α concentration of group 4 was higher than the other groups. On the other hand, the highest concentration of TGF-ß1 was found in group 2. While the number of somatic cells in group 1 was lower than in groups 2, 3, and 4, there was no statistical difference between groups 1 and 5. The lowest milk fat ratio was found in group 1, and it was found to be statistically lower than groups 2, 3, and 4. While the rate of solid-non-fat of group 1 increased compared to groups 2 and 3, the highest protein ratio was found in groups 1 and 5. There was no difference between the 5 groups in terms of mineral matter ratios. While the specific gravity was highest in group 1, there was no statistical difference between the other 4 groups. Overall, it was concluded that there was an increase in TNF-α and TGF-ß1 concentrations and a change in milk composition in samples with bacterial growth.(AU)
