The present experiment aimed to evaluate the reproductive response of Blackbelly ewes synchronized with low doses of eCG during the summer in a tropical climate. Sixty multiparous hair ewes were divided into three groups (20 ewes/group): control group (CG; 0 IU of eCG), treated group 1 (TG-1; 140 IU of eCG) and treated group 2 (TG-2; 300 IU of eCG). The study found that the three groups of ewes showed differences in their reproductive behavior (P < 0.01). Indeed, all the ewes in the TG-1 and TG-2 groups presented a higher response to estrus than the CG (P < 0.01). In the same way, TG1 and TG-2 had an onset to estrus in less time (P < 0.01). On the other hand, prolificacy was also higher in TG-1 and TG-2 (P < 0.05). Likewise, ewes from TG-1 and TG-2 had more lambs than those from CG (P < 0.05). On the other hand, the variables of fertility and gestation length were similar regardless of the group of ewes (P > 0.05). It´s concluded that the ewes treated with eCG presented good reproductive behavior, and the majority did so in the first 24 to 36 h after removing the intravaginal device.

The objective was to evaluate fertility, cyclicality behavior, and sexual performance of Pantaneiro sheep throughout the year's photoperiods in Mato Grosso do Sul - Brazil. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment one, the ewes used aged between 2 and 4 years, distributed in three homogeneous groups of 54 animals and subjected to reproductive evaluation in three different predefined luminosity periods, consisting of autumn (11h 45 min.), spring (12h 30 min.), and summer (12h 55 min.). The characteristics studied were body weight (BW), body condition score (BCC), estrus distribution (EST), percentage of pregnant females per cycle (%P), plasma progesterone (PP), and fertility (F) in the three predefined seasons. The mating system used was controlled natural nocturnal and lasted for 45 days. Experiment two, evaluated the ram sexual activity. The males (10) were individually exposed to four ovariectomized ewes. The ewes cycled during evaluated seasons, and the highest fertility was observed in animals with BCC >2.75. The PP concentration differed among periods, and higher conception rates (F) were observed in autumn and spring. The rams (75%) had a medium of sexual performance when they performed more than two ejaculations in 20 min throughout the seasons. Pantaneiro sheep of both genders had a similar fertility index, with early and constant activity throughout the year, displaying no photoperiodism or seasonality.

Centropomus undecimalis (popularly known as common snook) is a very important resource for commercial and recreational fishing. This study aimed to evaluate quantitative indicators of the reproductive biology of C. undecimalis in the Parnaíba Delta Environmental Protection Area (Brazil). The parameters were analyzed at the different stages of the reproductive cycle of 155 specimens, 135 (87.10%) males and 20 (12.90%) females. The results showed positive allometric growth for females and negative allometric growth for males. The sex ratio was 1:6.75 (females: males). The first estimated maturation (L50) was 57.21 cm for females and 54.55 cm for males. The species spawns multiple times, with oocytes maturing in batches, being released at intervals. According to the results of this study, it was possible to notice that reproductive peaks occurred in February, May, and November. Therefore, it is recommended that the capture of this species be avoided during these months.

Shellfish gathering is an artisanal activity and a means of family subsistence for several coastal communities along the Brazilian coast and Anomalocardia brasiliana is one of the main exploited mollusk species. This paper aimed to obtain information about the temporal distribution, growth, yield, and gonadosomatic index of the bivalve mollusk A. brasiliana in a natural stock to provide subsidies for the sustainable extraction of this resource. The study was carried out in an area of the Acaraú River estuary, on Volta do Rio Beach, municipality of Acaraú, Ceará, Brazil. Samples were collected monthly for one year at spring low tide, using the random squares method. Water and sediment temperature and salinity were measured in situ. Sediment samples were collected for granulometric analysis. The specimens were individually quantified, measured, and weighed. A total of 8,507 A. brasiliana specimens were sampled, and the highest density recorded was 2,534 individuals/m2, whose longest shell length reached between 21 and 25 mm, while the mean meat yield was 12.42%. The means of biometric variables of individuals showed significant differences during the sample period. Frequency histograms evidenced the presence of adult and juvenile individuals, showing a continuous reproductive cycle in the studied natural stock. These results can assist the sustainable shellfish gathering activity on Volta do Rio Beach. We recommend that A. brasiliana is above 20 mm in length to be captured and the reduction in the capture effort from April to September, when the highest density of juveniles was observed, to guarantee the sustainability of this stock.

We aimed to compare the effect of three estradiol benzoate (EB) doses on follicular wave emergence (FWE) and dominant follicle growth of suckled Nelore cows submitted to TAI (D0). On a random day of estrous cycle (D−10), multiparous (MULT; n=36) and primiparous (PRIM; n=20) suckled Nelore cows received an intravaginal progesterone (P4) device and were assigned in three groups. Cows in the EB-1 (n=20), EB-1.5 (n=15) or EB-2 (n=21) groups received, respectively, an im treatment with 1, 1.5 or 2 mg EB. A subgroup (n=10-13 cows/group) were subject to daily ovarian evaluations from D−10 to D0. On D−2, P4 devices were removed, and all cows received the same treatment: 1 mg estradiol cypionate, 0.53 mg sodium cloprostenol, and 300 IU eCG. Statistical analyses were performed considering only the main effects of treatment group and parity order. The proportion of cows with a synchronized FWE and the moment of the FWE did not differ (p>0.05) among the treatment groups (overall: 80% [28/35] and 4.1 ± 0.4 days); however, the FWE occurred earlier (p=0.007) in MULT (3.8 ± 0.2 days) than PRIM (5.1 ± 0.4) cows. The proportion of animals detected in estrus was greater (86% [31/36] vs. 70% [14/20]; p=0.02) and the dominant follicle was larger on D−2 (9.7 ± 0.3 mm vs. 7.8 ± 0.7 mm; p=0.006) and D0 (11.9 ± 0.4 mm vs. 10 ± 0.5 mm; p=0.008) in MULT than PRIM cows. In conclusion, the three EB doses presented similar efficiency to synchronize the FWE in suckled Nelore cows. Moreover, a delayed FWE and smaller dominant follicle is observed in PRIM cows, contributing to the reduced reproductive performance in this parity category when using similar TAI protocols of MULT cows.

Background: The use of teaser rams is an essential practice for detecting estrus in ewes as well as for accelerating puberty and synchronizing ovulation in the animal. There are several methods for preparing teasers, and the method used should be based on an assessment of the producer’s requirements. The ideal technique should be low cost and safe, ensuring the non-fertilization of ewes. This study evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of two reversible teaser preparation techniques using a reversible plastic clamp. The techniques were compared in terms of functionality, possible post-surgical complications, and hematological changes of the rams as well as durability and reversibility. Materials, Methods & Results: Twelve healthy rams, aged 14-20 months, were divided into two groups (G1 and G2). Blood samples were collected through the jugular vein to perform the following analyses: blood count, total plasma protein, and fibrinogen. Following local infiltrative anesthesia with 5.0 mL 2% lidocaine without vasoconstrictor, the procedure was performed as follows: in G1, the preputial ostium was partially closed, and in G2, sigmoid flexure was performed in the cranial region, approximately 5-8 cm immediately caudal to the scrotal sac. In the postoperative period, 20 mg/kg oxytetracycline and 2.2 mg/kg flunixinmeglumine were intramuscularly administered as a single dose. The wounds were dressed, sprayed with repellent, and allowed to heal for seven days. The procedures in both groups were simple to perform, low cost, and low risk; caused minimal tissue injury; enabled rapid recovery; promoted little or no stress to the animals; are reversible; and left no complications. The animals of both groups satisfactorily identified the females in estrus during the three-month experimental period, maintained libido, and failed to mate with any female. The blood count levels...

In order to evaluate aspects of reproductive biology of the pequira ( Bryconamericus stramineus) in the elevator of the Funil Dam - MG, fish capture was carried out from November 2008 to January 2009 and 317 individuals were collected. The mean standard length (SL) of the population was 4.96 cm and mean weight 1.80 g. The females had SL of 5.0 cm, while males had a SL of 4.6 cm. A sex ratio of 2.20: 1 (females: male) was observed. Our results show that 73% of the individuals analyzed were considered adults. The species presented low fecundity, mean of 470.9 oocytes per female and a mean diameter of 221.08 m, with an increase in oocyte diameter over the evaluation period. The length of the first gonadal maturation was estimated at 5.0 cm. The results obtained in this work suggest that the reproductive cycle of the species occurs in the analyzed period. Although this species does not have migratory reproductive habits, the presence of adults in the reproductive stage was observed in the transposition area, which suggests a search for new environments for spawning.(AU)

This review reports the advances of goat Artificial Insemination (AI) in Brazil in the last two decades. These advances were based primarily on the study and knowledge of the reproductive events of goats subjected to different methods of control of the estrous cycle and ovulation. These approaches are mainly related to the development and precise characterization of protocols of estrus induction and synchronization in goats during either the natural breeding or nonbreeding season. In parallel, the Embrapa Technique of cervical AI through cervical immobilization in goats was developed. In association, the studies characterized the cervical mucus and the ideal moment for AI execution with different types of semen. Prototypes and an AI kit were developed and tested at both laboratory and field conditions in the national dairy goat breeding program - CapraGene®. Factors affecting the pregnancy rate after AI were identified and classified. Studies based on transrectal ultrasonography have revealed the prevalence of reproductive disorders characterizing the major problems associated with subfertility or infertility in the goat. All these studies allowed to consolidate one of the most productive and applied collections of AI knowledge in goats of the last 20 years in Brazil.(AU)

The Paraíba do Sul River is affected by extensive water collection for supply, organic and industrial pollution, and dams. Nonetheless, the ichthyofauna maintains biodiversity and sustains artisanal fisheries. This study analyzes the composition, abundance and distribution of fish larvae, an important approach to determine the reproductive period and spawning sites. The sampling occurred from August 2011 through February 2013 in five sites at a transect between the banks on the lower reach of the Paraíba do Sul River. A total of 5,412 larvae belonging to 20 taxa was captured. The predominant order was Characiformes. Larvae of Prochilodus spp. and Leporinus spp. were the most abundant; larvae of Brycon insignis, an endangered species, were present. Fewer larvae were collected in the second reproductive cycle during a severe drought. The absence of eggs indicates that the study area is not used for spawning, and highlights the need for studies in the main channel and in the tributaries of the Paraíba do Sul River. Fish larvae need to have access to the marginal lagoons along the lower stretch of the river, an area which is the object of disputes between fishermen and farmers.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of cyclicity, the diameter of the dominant follicle and the degree of uterine edema in mares from forest area of the Rondonia State, during the transitional period of reproductive season. For this purpose, during the months of August and September (spring transition), healthy mares, Quarter Horse breed (N = 46), field or housed and aged 2 to 12 years were submitted to two examinations gynecological examination with a 14-day interval. The exams were performed to determine and / or monitor the presence of corpus luteum, the diameter of the dominant follicle and the degree of uterine edema. Using a logistic regression model, the effect of the breeding system (field or stabled) and age group (≤ 5, from 6 to 9 and ≥ 10 years) were evaluated on the occurrence of cyclicity as well as on the diameter of the dominant follicle and the degree of uterine edema by generalized linear mixed model. A higher proportion of mares (P = 0.001) was considered acyclical in relation to the cyclical (68.9% (31/45) vs. 31.1% (14/45), respectively]. Among the acyclic mares, there was a similarity (P = 0.127) in proportion to those with dominant follicle or with small follicles. The breeding system did not influence (P > 0.05) the occurrence of cyclicity, the diameter of the dominant follicle and the degree of uterine edema. The age group (≤ 5, from 6 to 9 and ≥ 10 years) determined influence (P < 0.05) on the occurrence of cyclicity (28.6 b; 18.2 b and 66.7% a; respectively) and in the degree of uterine edema (1.0 ± 0.1 b, 2.0 ± 0.1 a and 2.0 ± 0.2 a, respectively). It is concluded that the majority of the mares created in the forest zone of Rondônia region are acyclical in the period of transition of spring. However, the occurrence of cyclicity and the degree of uterine edema were influenced by the age range of the mares evaluated.(AU)

Abstract In order to evaluate aspects of reproductive biology of the pequira ( Bryconamericus stramineus) in the elevator of the Funil Dam - MG, fish capture was carried out from November 2008 to January 2009 and 317 individuals were collected. Although this species does not have migratory reproductive habits, the presence of adults in the reproductive stage was observed in the transposition area, which suggests a search for new environments for spawning.

As our understanding of ovarian function in cattle has improved, our ability to control it has also increased. Luteal function in cattle has been studied in detail, and prostaglandin F2α has been used for several years for the elective induction of luteal regression. More recently, follicle wave dynamics has been studied and protocols designed to induce follicular wave emergence and ovulation have reduced, and even eliminated, the need for estrus detection. The addition of progestin-releasing devices, estradiol, GnRH and equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) have provided opportunities for fixed-time AI (FTAI) and possibilities for increased pregnancy rates. In embryo transfer programs, these same treatments have eliminated the need for estrus detection, permitting fixed-time embryo transfer and the initiation of superstimulatory treatments without regard to day of the estrous cycle. Collectively, new treatment protocols have facilitated the application of assisted reproductive technologies, and this is especially true in South America. Over the last 20 years, the use of AI in South America has increased, due largely to the use of FTAI. There has been more than a 10-fold increase in the use of FTAI in Brazil with more than 11 million treatments in 2016, representing 85% of all AI. Similar trends are occurring in Argentina and Uruguay. Production of in vivo-derived (IVD) embryos has remained relatively stable over the years, but in vitro embryo production (IVP) has increased dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years, especially in Brazil where more than 300,000 IVP embryos were produced in 2010. World-wide, more than 666,000 bovine IVP embryos were produced in 2016, of which more than 57% were produced in South America. The use of assisted reproductive technologies has facilitated the dissemination of improved genetics and increased reproductive performance; other South American countries are now following suit.(AU)

The intensive use of Doppler ultrasonography in several studies in the last decade allowed the characterization of vascular perfusion and the estimation of function of the reproductive organs and tissues along the estrous cycle and pregnancy in cattle. We aim to discuss the possibility of using Doppler imaging and to explore the potential of its inclusion in reproductive programs in cattle industry. Recent studies in dairy and beef cows indicated a high accuracy and sensitivity when Doppler ultrasonography is used to evaluate corpus luteum function and to diagnosis pregnancy between days 20 and 22. Moreover, resynchronization programs starting 5 to 7 days after timed embryo transfer (FTET) coupled with early pregnancy diagnosis were developed for beef cattle, and have been implemented in commercial embryo transfer programs. These strategies allow a reduction in the interval between two FTET from 40 to 24 days and may improve the gains in reproductive efficiency when compared to traditional programs than begin resynchronization after the pregnancy diagnosis at 30 days. A second alternative to use Doppler imaging is the evaluation of luteal blood perfusion at the time of embryo transfer for selection of recipients with greater receptivity potential. This may increases fertility in FTET, as embryos would not be transferred to females with non-functional CL, and in cases with recipients surplus, females with higher receptivity would be prioritized.
