AVALIAÇÃO DA INDIVIDUALIDADE DOS CAVALOS: A PERSONALIDADE DO ANIMAL INFLUENCIA SUA RESPOSTA COMPORTAMENTAL E COGNITIVA?

A relação entre seres humanos e equinos é de longa data. Ao longo desse tempo, o uso desses animais propiciou inúmeros benefícios para as sociedades humanas. No entanto, a interação entre humanos e equinos ainda é muito deficiente, visto a ocorrência frequente de acidentes durante o manejo e equitação, alta incidência de problemas comportamentais dos equinos e elevado índice de animais descartados ainda muito jovens. Essa situação problemática tem como principais causadores a falta de conhecimento da espécie e negligências nas propostas de manejo e ambiente de criação. Nesse contexto, fica evidente que para melhorar o setor equestre é necessário investir em conhecimento. Ou seja, a compreensão do cavalo, liderada pelo conhecimento de seu comportamento, cognição e formas de aprendizado, deve se apresentar como ferramenta principal em prol a conscientização das atuais práticas de criação, manejo e treinamento. Tal compreensão se dá, não apenas como espécie, mas também como indivíduo. Isso porque a interação humano-equino é muito particular uma determinada pessoa vai interagir com um determinado cavalo e ambos, tais como são, possuem características intrínsecas e únicas, como emocionalidade, temperamento e personalidade. Assim, o objetivo desse trabalho foi desenvolver um questionário psicométrico para avaliação da personalidade dos equinos que possa se tornar uma ferramenta acessível aos proprietários que almejam expandir o conhecimento sobre o seu animal. Reconhecer traços de personalidade nos animais pode auxiliar a propor práticas mais condizentes de manejo e treinamento, bem como direcionar seu uso para esportes ou pessoas com necessidades específicas. O questionário foi desenvolvido utilizando-se cinco grandes eixos de personalidade (extroversão, agradabilidade, conscienciosidade, neuroticismo e abertura a novas experiências) e mostrou-se eficiente e confiável em demonstrar a pesonalidade dos animais. Ainda, outro fator de importância é entender como as diferentes personalidades nos animais influenciam suas estratégias cognitivas e forma de aprendizado, essenciais para propostas de manejo e treinamento direcionadas às necessidades do indivíduo. Sendo assim, também avaliamos os animais em um desafio cognitivo no qual deveriam escolher entre um percurso mais longo ou mais curto para ter acesso a um alimento. Cavalos com alta pontuação para os eixos de extroversão e abertura à novas experiências demonstraram mais comportamentos associados a ansiedade durante o desafio e também foram consistentes na escolha por lado, evidenciando que de fato existem diferenças a serem consideradas e investigadas.

The relationship between humans and horses goes back thousand years. Over this time, the use of these animals has provided countless benefits to human societies. However, the interaction between humans and horses is still very deficient, given the frequent occurrence of accidents during handling and riding, the high incidence of behavioral problems in horses and the high rate of discarded young animals. This problematic situation has as main causes the lack of knowledge of the species and negligence in management proposals and the creation environment. Thus, to improve the equestrian sector it is necessary to invest in knowledge. In other words, the understanding of the horse, led by the knowledge of its behavior, cognition and learning, must be presented as a main tool towards the awareness of current breeding, handling and training practices. Such understanding takes place, not only as a species, but also as an individual. This is because a human-equine interaction is very particular - a certain person will interact with a certain horse and both, as they are, have intrinsic and unique characteristics, such as emotion patterns, temperament and personality. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop a psychometric questionnaire to assess the personality of horses that can become an accessible tool for owners who wish to expand their knowledge about their animal. Recognizing personality traits in horses can help to achieve more consistent practical handling and training, as well as directing its use to sports or people with specific needs. The questionnaire was developed using five main personality axes (extroversion, agreeableness, conscience, neuroticism and openness) and it was efficient and reliable in demonstrating the animals' personalities. Still, another important factor is understood how the different personalities in animals influence their cognitive strategies and learning, essential for management and training proposals directed to the individual's needs. Therefore, the animals were also evaluated in a cognitive challenge in which to choose between a longer or shorter route to access a food. Horses with high scores for the extroversion and openness to new experience axes demonstrated more behavior associated with anxiety during the challenge and were also more consistent in their choices, showing that there are indeed differences to be considered and investigated.

This review aimed to highlight the importance of pig welfare and meat quality, as well as some critical points, solutions to improve the management of these animals for swine production. The animal welfare settings have been widely debated within the international scientific community in recent decades. A conceptual row is the most widely accepted animal welfare within a multidimensional approach, encompassing emotions, biological functioning and natural behavior. However, understood the concepts, another challenge that arises is how to properly measure the animal welfare under field conditions. The subject animal welfare is growing rapidly and gaining greater importance in livestock production, not only pigs, but of all the exploited classes.(AU)

Esta revisão teve como objetivo ressaltar a importância do bem-estar dos suínos e a qualidade da carne, bem como alguns pontos críticos e soluções para melhorar o manejo desses animais em relação à produção suína. Welfare quality applied to the Brazilian dairy cattle / Qualidade do bem-estar aplicada a bovinos leiteiros brasileiros

Due to the necessity of establishing animal welfare standards for the Brazilian dairy sector in harmony to the new consumers requirements and legislation, it was drawn up the project Welfare Quality (WQ) - Brazil, based on the proposed project Welfare Quality ® European Union for dairy cattle. The assessments of animal welfare were performed in seven dairy farms at São Paulo/Brazil. They were selected in order to represent the main types of dairy farms found in Brazil. To carry out the project, it was used the evaluation protocol of welfare in Dairy Cattle Welfare Quality ® Assessment Protocol for Cattle, which is based on the principles of Good Feeding, Proper Installation, Good Health and Appropriate Behavior. The protocol defines four possible categories for the assessed dairy farms: Not classified, Acceptable, Enhanced or Excellent. Only one farm received category Acceptable, while the others received category Enhanced. A highlight is the unsatisfactory score for the principle Appropriate Behavior received by four farms. Possible reasons are inappropriate animals handling, assessor subjectivity and/or protocols subjectivity. To this final point, some emotion standards are vague and do not describe how animals should behave for each type of situation during evaluation. Finally, it can be concluded that the European protocol for the Evaluation of Welfare in Dairy Cattle Welfare Quality ® may be used in Brazilian dairy farmsprovided there is previous assessor training and adaptation of some points to be feasible to Brazilian dairy sector.(AU)

Baseando-se na necessidade do estabelecimento de padrões para o sistema brasileiro de produção animal, elaborou-se uma proposta contextualizada do Projeto Welfare Quality (WQ) Brasil, baseada na proposta do Projeto Welfare Quality® União Europeia para bovinos de leite. As avaliações de bem-estar animal foram realizadas em 7 unidades, de diferentes níveis tecnológicos, no Estado de São Paulo/Brasil. Para tal, foi utilizado o protocolo de Avaliação de Bem-Estar em Bovinos de Leite Welfare Quality® (Assessment protocol for cattle, 2009). Os principais aspectos relacionados ao bem-estar em um sistema de exploração animal foram transformados em diversas medidas mensuráveis com base nos princípios da boa alimentação, boa instalação, boa saúde e comportamento apropriado. Feita a avaliação, é atribuída à unidade de produção uma categoria de bem-estar: excelente; bom; aceitável ou não classificada. Apenas uma propriedade obteve a categoria de BEA “Aceitável”, enquanto que as demais obtiveram a categoria de BEA “Bom”. Conclui-se que o protocolo europeu de Avaliação de Bem-Estar em Bovinos de Leite Welfare Quality® pode ser utilizado para a pecuária leiteira nacional desde que seja feito treinamento prévio. Entretanto, necessitase a formação de novos protocolos mais específicos para os diferentes sistemas produtivos encontrados no país.(AU)

A relevância do uso de ferramentas cognitivas e etológicas para estudos de bem-estar animal / The importance of the cognitive and ethologic tools for animal welfare studies

Avaliar o bem-estar dos animais deve levar em conta o que se entende por bem-estar animal, e isso, inclui o entendimento do público geral e dos cientistas. Entretanto, para julgar as condições dos animais é importante conhecer quão importantes são para eles os vários elementos do seu ambiente. Assim, a análise multidisciplinar do bem-estar, com a aplicação simultânea de indicadores biológicos e de metodologias que procuram estabelecer o que os animais preferem, tem oferecido os resultados mais convincentes em relação às preferências dos animais e como eles se sentem. Contudo, um dos problemas enfrentados pelos cientistas é o de que os animais não são capazes de expressar suas emoções através da linguagem falada e, sendo assim, não é possível avaliar diretamente os seus estados mentais. Por isso, nos últimos anos, o desempenho de animais em testes de viés cognitivo, juntamente com observações comportamentais e fisiológicas, tem sido utilizado como ferramenta para a avaliação do estado emocional dos mesmos. Da mesma forma, o enfoque recente de avaliação dos comportamentos durante eventos de antecipação a uma recompensa, parece oferecer uma forma simples e fácil, de se avaliar o estado geral de bem-estar de animais. Nesta revisão objetivou-se elucidar as novas técnicas e metodologias disponíveis para o estudo do comportamento e do bem-estar de animais de interesse zootécnico.

However, a problem facing scientists is that animals are not able to express their emotions through spoken language and, thus, it is not possible to directly assess their mental states. Consequently, in recent years, the performance of animals in cognitive bias tasks, along with behavioral and physiological observations, has been used as a tool for evaluating their emotional state. Likewise, the recent focus of behavioral assessment during anticipation of a reward seems to offer a simple and easy tool with which we can assess the overall welfare of animals. This review aimed to elucidate the new techniques and methodologies available to study the behavior and welfare of farm animals.

Then the main of this article is present the principal concepts and practical means to evaluate the animal welfare in swine, according the Welfare Quality® protocols, with the identifications of the positive and critical aspects involved.

Consequently, in recent years, the performance of animals in cognitive bias tasks, along with behavioral and physiological observations, has been used as a tool for evaluating their emotional state. Likewise, the recent focus of behavioral assessment during anticipation of a reward seems to offer a simple and easy tool with which we can assess the overall welfare of animals. This review aimed to elucidate the new techniques and methodologies available to study the behavior and welfare of farm animals.

Avaliar o bem-estar dos animais deve levar em conta o que se entende por bem-estar animal, e isso, inclui o entendimento do público geral e dos cientistas. Entretanto, para julgar as condições dos animais é importante conhecer quão importantes são para eles os vários elementos do seu ambiente. Assim, a análise multidisciplinar do bem-estar, com a aplicação simultânea de indicadores biológicos e de metodologias que procuram estabelecer o que os animais preferem, tem oferecido os resultados mais convincentes em relação às preferências dos animais e como eles se sentem. Contudo, um dos problemas enfrentados pelos cientistas é o de que os animais não são capazes de expressar suas emoções através da linguagem falada e, sendo assim, não é possível avaliar diretamente os seus estados mentais. Por isso, nos últimos anos, o desempenho de animais em testes de viés cognitivo, juntamente com observações comportamentais e fisiológicas, tem sido utilizado como ferramenta para a avaliação do estado emocional dos mesmos. Da mesma forma, o enfoque recente de avaliação dos comportamentos durante eventos de antecipação a uma recompensa, parece oferecer uma forma simples e fácil, de se avaliar o estado geral de bem-estar de animais. Nesta revisão objetivou-se elucidar as novas técnicas e metodologias disponíveis para o estudo do comportamento e do bem-estar de animais de interesse zootécnico.
