This study assessed the impact of total mixed ration silage of Megathyrsus maximus harvested with 70 cm composed of Megathyrsus maximus harvested at 70 cm in height and concentrate at the time of silage or total mixed ration of grass cut at 70 cm composed of Megathyrsus maximus harvested with 70 cm in height (in Exp. I and III) and total mixed ration silage cut at 130 cm composed of Megathyrsus maximus harvested 130 cm height and concentrate at the time of silage or total mixed ration of Megathyrsus maximus harvested with 130 cm composed of Megathyrsus maximus harvested at 130 cm height (in Exp. II and IV), on rumen metabolism, nutrient digestibility, and the performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot lambs. The results showed that TMRS70 increased ruminal pH in Exp. I and TMRS130 exhibited higher ether extract digestibility, propionic concentration, and lower acetic to propionic ratio and ruminal pH compared to TMR130 in Exp. II. In Exp. III and IV, there was no significant effect on the performance and quality of the carcass. However, in Exp. IV, TMRS130 led to decreased dry matter intake and average daily gain, while lambs fed with TMR130 showed a higher rib-eye area. Total ration ensilage could be used as a conservation method for young grasses (70 cm) without impairing performance, metabolism, carcasses, and meat quality. However, further research is recommended to evaluate the economic analysis of feeding total ration ensilage (70 cm) instead of total mixed ration as a forage conservation method.
No entanto, no Exp.

We investigated the impact of weaning at 30, 75, and 180 days of age on performance, body measurements, and rumen development (using the ß-hydroxybutyrate biomarker) of beef calves until 190 days of age. A total of 64 Brangus calves were assigned to three treatments: hyper-early (W30), weaned at 32±0.89 days of age (n = 22, 10 males and 12 females); early (W75), weaned at 77±0.95 days of age (n = 20, 12 males and eight females); and conventional (W180), weaned at 183±0.82 days of age (n = 22, 13 males and nine females). Body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), ß-hydroxybutyrate (ßHBA), and morphometric measurements were evaluated. These variables were influenced by an interaction between treatment and days and were not affected by the sex of calves. The W30 calves experienced weight loss from 30 to 40 days of age compared with the W75 and W180 calves. Consequently, at day 75, W30 animals were lighter and had lower body length, thoracic circumference, withers height, and croup height compared with the W75 and W180 calves. However, no significant differences in BW were observed among treatments at 85 days of age. Additionally, W30 calves exhibited higher ADG and a moderate correlation with ßHBA levels. Weaning calves at 30 days of age may negatively affect their performance until the sixth week after weaning, but there is no impairment in performance at 190 days of age.(AU)

Seaweed plays a significant role in reducing green-house gasses (GHG) emitted by ruminant animals, in particular methane gas (CH4) generated during rumen fermentation of the feed. Euchaema cottonii is one of potential cultivated seaweed in tropical country. A preservation procedure is necessary for further application in CH4 reduction program. The study looked at how three drying methods (sun drying, oven drying, and freeze drying) affected the E.cottonii ability in reducing CH4 methane as measured by an in vitro technique. The addition of dried E. cottonii up to 4% dry matter (DM) was tested using rice straw diets mixed with concentrate in the ratio of 70%:30% in DM base. Measurements was conducted on gas production, degradability and end product of rumen fermentation during 48-hour incubation using a gas production system and ANKOM Daisy II techniques. Overall, the three dried products of E. cottonii found to considerably lower production of CH4, increased DM and OM degradability as well as total VFA production (P<0.05). The three treatments have no effect on NH3 concentration and the bacterial population, but decreased protozoa population (P<0.01). The lowering of CH4 gas production in the rumen is impacted by all three drying methods in the same way. It is concluded that dried E.cottonii addition up to 4% DM effective in depressing enteric CH4 production, without causing negative effect on DM and OM degradability as well as did not depress total VFA formation and bacterial activities. The three different drying-methods have similar effect on reducing CH4 production, with the most affective is freeze-drying method.

Abstract Due to extensive application of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed, antimicrobial resistance has been increased. To overcome this challenge, rumen microbiologists search for new probiotics to improve the rate of livestock production. The present study was aimed to isolate and evaluate breed-specific lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as potential animal probiotics. The current study was conducted during 10 months from July 2020 to April 2021, in which a total of n=12 strains were isolated from different samples including milk, rumen, and feces of Nilli Ravi Buffaloes. These isolates were evaluated for their antimicrobial potential against common animal pathogens (Bacillus spp., E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Listeria spp.). All the isolates were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the phylogenetic analyses inferred that these strains showed close relations to the species of various genera; Enterococcus lactis, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Bacillus subtilis Weissella cibaria, Weissella soli, Bacillus tequilensis, Weissella bombi, Bacillus licheniformis, Lactococcus lactis, Bacillus megaterium, Lactobacillus ruminis, and Lactococcus lactis. NMCC-Ru2 has exhibited the enormous potential of antimicrobial activity, 28 mm, for Salmonella typhimurium;23 mm for Listeria monocytogenes 21 mm for E.coil. Highest resistance was seen in NMCC-Ru2 agasint test antbiotic, like 25.5 mm for Tetracycline. Overall results revesl that the probiotic profile of isolates was achieved using standard criteria, particularly with animal probiotic properties

The aim of this study was to assess the in situdegradation of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in oat silage-potato foliage (OSPF) (70:30) containing four levels (0, 25, 50, 75 g ofSaccharomyces cerevisiaeyeast/kg of fresh forage) as an additive. A randomized complete block design was employed in a 4 x 8 factorial scheme (levels, times) with three replications to determine the impact of yeast levels and incubation times on the degradation of variables. Three Brown Swiss cattle with ruminal fistula were used. Samples of 5 g were incubated in nylon bags for 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. Time zero (t0)allowed for estimating the soluble fraction. The degradation parameters of DM, CP, NDF, and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were analyzed using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The potential degradation (PD) of DM, NDF, and ADF in silages was not influenced by yeast levels, with means of 89.55, 85.22, and 83.45%, respectively. This trend was also observed for effective degradations at 2, 5, and 8%/hour of DM, NDF and ADF. Silages containing 25, 50, and 75 g of yeast/kg of OSPF, which did not differ from each other, showed significant superiority (p<0.05) in CP degradation compared to yeast-free silage. In the latter silage, the indigestible rate (i) of CP was higher than in silages containing yeast, with degradation rates (c) of 2%/hour. Among the silages, the one containing 25 g/kg of OSPF exhibited high potential CP degradation (93.18%), effective at 2%/hour (87.48%), and a low indigestible rate (6.82%), classifying it as a forage resource with good nutritional quality.
O tempo zero (t0) permitiu estimar a fração solúvel.

This study aimed to evaluate food additives for the replacement of monensinand virginiamycin in high-grain diets for cattle. A Latin square experimental design was adopted, represented by four treatments (functional oil, yeast, tannin and control monensin and virginiamycin) in four experimental periods, with four animals cannulated in the rumen. l The natural ruminal modulators fully replaced the ionophores monensin and virginiamycin in the concentrate. Being evaluated: ruminal pH, apparent digestibility and in situdegradability of dry matter. The results showed that the pH variation curve as a function of rumen fluid collection time was not significant (P<0.05) among the additives studied. The additives used to replace monensin and virginiamycin in crossbred cattle fed a diet of 70% concentrate and 30% roughage with fractionation five times a day, are efficient in maintaining rumen pH above 6.0. The additives did not affect digestibility of OM, CP, NDF, FDA and EE.The in situ degradability of the soluble and potentially degradable fractions was higher in the yeast and essential oil treatments, respectively. The additives evaluated are efficient in replacing monensin and virginiamycin.
Sendo avaliados: pH ruminal, digestibilidade aparente e a degradabilidade in situda matéria seca.

A 84-day trial was conducted to investigate the potentialities of Vernonia amygdalina and Moringa oleifera leaves as natural growth promoters in ruminant production. Hence, the leaves were identified, collected, screened, air-dried, and milled separately into powdery form to make the leaf meals. A basal concentrate diet (BCD - control diet) was formulated, and were divided into nine equal portions while the leaf meals: V. amygdalina leaf meal (VALM) or M. oleifera leaf meal (MOLM) were added and thoroughly mixed with concentrate diet at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 w w-1, per each leaf meal, respectively. Thereafter fed to forty-five West African Dwarf growing goats, randomly allocated to the diets. Nutrient intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation, and weight change of goats were used as response criteria. The results revealed that 20% VALM improved (p < 0.05) crude protein intake, nitrogen retention, final live-weight, average daily weight gain (ADWG), and feed conversion ratio. VALM affected rumen fermentation (p < 0.05) increasing propionic, butyric acids and total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) concentrations, and total viables bacterial. Further, positive strong correlation (R2 = 0.9498) existed between ADWG and TVFA. It can be concluded that VALM and MOLM are potential phytogenic plants capable of altering the rumen ecosystem for improved nutrient intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation, better than the control diet, without any detrimental effects on growing goats' performance. Summarily, dietary inclusion of VALM at 20% improved feed utilization and animal performance.(AU)

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of corn dried distillers' grains (DDG) levels in non-forage diets by in vitro, in situ (0 to 50%), and in vivo (0 to 40%) trials on kinetic parameters of gas production (GP) on rumen-degradable protein (RDP) and rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) as well as on nitrogen (N) metabolism in Nellore cattle. For in vitro and in situ studies, three rumen cannulated Nellore males with body weight of 340.48 ± 22.22 kg were used. For the in vivo study, five non-castrated male Nellore cattle with an initial body weight of 355.20 ± 35.28 kg and 24 ± 3 months old were used to evaluate the effect of increasing DDG levels in non-forage diets on N metabolism by a 5 × 5 Latin square design. Experimental diets were based on ground corn, cottonseed cake, urea, mineral supplement, and increasing levels of DDG replacing ground corn. The DDG levels caused a linear decrease in GP and in vitro dry matter digestibility. The DDG presented a lower dry matter digestibility (DMD) and RDP and higher RUP than corn grain and cottonseed cake, making DDG diets present lower DMD and RDP than control. The DDG levels linearly increased the intake of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and ether extract, whereas non-fiber carbohydrates intake decreased and tended to decrease the DMD and organic matter digestibility. The DDG levels caused a linear increase in N intake and in total, fecal, and urinary N excretion, which was the major N excretion route, causing a quadratic drop in retained N and caused a quadratic effect on alanine aminotransferase. In contrast, triglycerides were cubically affected, and total blood protein increased. Thus, DDG levels negatively affect in vitro and in situ digestibility, increasing N intake but increasing urinary N excretion.(AU)

This study evaluated the effects of tannin extract of Acacia mearnsii De Wild. or monensin on intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, and ruminal variables of lambs. Five rumen cannulated lambs (40.3 ± 2.8 kg) were used in a 5 × 5 Latin square design, with periods of 21 days each. The treatments were: control, without additive; Tan-0.60, Tan-1.20, and Tan-1.80 for the doses of 0.60, 1.20, and 1.80 g kg−1 body weight (BW) of tannin extract, respectively; and ionophore (monensin) at 0.75 mg kg−1 of BW. Tannins reduced the digestibility of dry matter (DM) and the greatest effects were observed for Tan-1.80. Tannins also increased or tended to increase the fecal excretion of DM, and the greatest effects were observed for Tan-1.20 and Tan-1.80. Tannins increased the fecal excretion of N, decreased the amount of N in urine, but did not affect N retained. Furthermore, tannins reduced the concentration of valerate and the acetate:propionate ratio and increased propionate without affecting the amount of total volatile fatty acids, and the greatest effects were observed for Tan-1.80. The use of ionophore only increased the elimination of N in the urine. Thus, monensin does not affect nitrogen retention, and tannin impairs digestibility, but increases propionate production.(AU)

The effect of different feed substrates incubated in filter bags [no bag (NB); Ankom® F57, 25 µm pore size (25AN); polyester, 45 µm pore size (45PB); polyester, 67 µm pore size (67PB) ] or dispersed in the medium on gas production, digestion and rumen fermentation was evaluated using an in vitro gas production system. Filter bags reduced (P < 0.01) gas production but increased (P < 0.01) the in vitro dry matter digestibility (45PB and 67PB). Additionally, the use of filter bags with smaller pore size, reduced total volatile fatty acid (P < 0.01), but had minimal effects on acetate, propionate, and butyrate concentration. Our research suggested that using filter bags with a pore size of 67 µ would reduce some negative effects of incubating feed substrate dispersed in the medium or in filter bags with smaller pore size. However, the use of bags with a larger pore size might allow the wash out of small feed particles with consequent overestimation of digestibility.

The present study presents a comparative evaluation of the transit kinetics of straw briquette in response to the dietary addition of non-protein nitrogen sources in the form of a mineral supplement. Four rumen-cannulated, castrated Holstein-Gir crossbred cattle, weighing an average of 380±22.64 kg, were distributed into a 4 × 4 Latin square design (four supplements with non-protein nitrogen sources × four experimental periods). The following non-protein nitrogen sources were studied: conventional urea, slow-release urea, extruded urea, and monoammonium phosphate. During the experiment, the animals were housed in individual stalls with concrete floors where they received a basal diet consisting of straw briquette, potato starch, and the mineral supplement, the latter whose variation was only in the non-protein nitrogen source, which characterized the treatments. The different non-protein nitrogen sources did not affect the parameters of transit or degradation kinetics of straw fiber briquette. These results can be associated with the low nitrogen content limited by the types of supplements and the particle size of straw briquette, which is smaller due to processing.(AU)

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of varying levels of sorghum silage replacement with waste from soybean pre-cleaning (WSPC) on the characteristics of carcass and non-carcass components in feedlot-finished lambs. A total of 32 uncastrated, weaned, Texel x Ile de France crossbreed male lambs, at 60 days of age, were used. The treatments consisted of different levels of WSPC replacing roughage (sorghum silage) at 0, 33.5, 66.5, and 100% on a dry matter (DM) basis. For these replacement levels, the inclusion of WSPC in the ration was 0, 150, 300, and 450 g kg-1 DM. A roughage-to-concentrate ratio of 45:55, also on a DM basis, was applied. The roughage componente consisted of sorghum silage and/or WSPC, while the concentrate contained corn grits, soybean meal, and calcitic limestone. The lambs were slaughtered upon reaching a live weight of 35 kg. The study found no significant differences (P>0.05) in carcass traits across the different levels of WSPC replacement. Among non-carcass components, however, the proportions of liver, pancreas, thymus, and kidneys increased linearly (P≤0.05) with increasing WSPC in the diet. Regarding the filling of the gastrointestinal tract, the content of the rumen, reticulum, small intestine, and total gastrointestinal content decreased linearly (P≤0.05) with greater WSPC in the diet. Waste from soybean pre-cleaning can replace sorghum silage as roughage in feedlot lamb diets without affecting the characteristics of carcass and non-carcass components. A replacement level of up to 100% (inclusion of 450 g kg-1 DM of the ration) is recommended for diets with a roughage-to-concentrate ratio of 45:55.(AU)

Although the frequent use of α-2 agonists for sedation and analgesia in ruminants, particularly in sheep some serious side effects may limit the use of these drugs in this species. Considering the particularities of the species and the need for analgesia and sedation for both veterinary procedures and biomedical experiments, it is necessary to understand the different side effects of α-2 agonists in sheep. Thus, this study aimed to review the side effects of α-2 agonists in sheep, as well as strategies that can be adopted for safer sedation. The main α-2 agonists used in sheep in scientific studies were xylazine, romifidine, detomidine, medetomidine and dexmedetomidine. Cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and hematologic alterations were addressed, and their underlying mechanisms were discussed. The main adverse effects of this class of drugs in sheep include: 1) Bradycardia with transient hypertension (one to five minutes), followed by hypotension; 2) Impaired pulmonary gas exchange; 3) Hypomotility of forestomachs and excessive gas accumulation in the rumen; 4) Reduction of uterine flow and uterine contraction in estrogenic periods, in addition to low-density diuresis; 5) Reduction of platelet count and transient reduction of packed cell volume. In conclusion, the specific hemodynamic and respiratory effects of alpha-2 agonists in sheep must be carefully considered to ensure safe sedation. The use of peripheral alpha-2 adrenergic antagonists effectively mitigates associated side effects, while co-administration of opioids can reduce the required sedative dose, thereby further minimizing potential adverse effects.(AU)

This trial was designed to evaluate the effect of processing method of rehydrated corn grain silage (RCGS) on feed intake, performance, carcass traits, feeding behavior, rumen morphology, and blood metabolites of cattle in the finishing phase. Thirty-eight F1 Angus × Nellore bulls (365±22 kg) raised under grazing conditions were housed in individual pens (2 × 4 m) for the feeding trial. At the end of the adaptation period, animals were weighed after a 16-h fast, blocked by shrunk body weight, and randomly assigned to one of two dietary treatments: GRC, consisting of RCGS that was ground before ensiling using a hammer mill with a uniform 8-mm screen (1.52 mm geometric mean particle size); and RRC, consisting of RCGS that was rolled before ensiling in a roller mill mounted in a bagging machine (2.18 mm geometric mean particle size). Diet ingredients were mixed manually twice daily, at 09:00 and 15:00 h, and offered as total mixed rations in amounts approximately 50 g/kg in excess of daily intake. The experimental diets contained a forage:concentrate ratio of 130:870 g/kg, with 644 g/kg of RCGS. The GRC resulted in greater daily variation in dry matter intake, total-tract digestibility (dry and organic matter), fecal pH, rumen papillae width, and lower first meal duration, meal length, fecal starch, and rumen papillae height than the RRC. However, grinding or rolling RCGS did not affect dry matter intake, growth performance, carcass traits, or health (liver abscesses, ruminitis, serum D-lactate) of finishing beef cattle. Therefore, the processing equipment to make RCGS might be preferable based on equipment availability, milling yield, energy consumption, and diet composition.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro fermentation products, digestibility, gas production (GP) kinetics, and enteric greenhouse emissions (CH4 and CO2) of substrates with different forage:concentrate ratios (100F, grass hay only; 100C, concentrate mixture only, and mixture, an equal proportion of them) within non-woven fabric (NWT; 100 g/m2) or F57 (Ankom®) filter bags compared to directly dispersed in the medium (DIS), arranged in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement. Substrates (0.5 g) were incubated using an AnkomRF GP System. Gas samples were collected during 24 and 48 h of incubation. We observed substrate × dispersion method interactions on GP at 48 h (GP48) and on in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD). The GP48 and IVOMD of the 100C substrate were greatest in DIS, intermediate in NWT, and least in F57. With mixture substrate, there were no differences in GP48 and IVOMD between DIS and NWT, but they were greater than in F57. The GP48 and IVOMD were greater in NWT than in DIS and F57 when 100F was incubated. There were no dispersion method × substrate interactions on molar proportions and total volatile fatty acids. With the increase in forage:concentrate ratio incubated, there was a linear decrease in CH4 and CO2 emission relative to organic matter digested. Overall, CH4 and CO2 emissions and digestibility were lower when substrates were incubated within filter bags. The noteworthy interaction between the incubation method and substrates indicates that the ranking of these variables for substrates with differing fermentabilities changes with the dispersion method employed.(AU)

Traumatic Reticulum Peritonitis this directly linked to the ingestion of sharp metallic objects, such as nails and pieces of wire, which can penetrate or pierce the wall of the reticulum. Although the occurrence of aluminum foreign bodies is rare, other elements, such as tire wires used to attach tarpaulins to silage and even wire bristles from brushes used in small airports, have been recorded as causes of this condition. Ingestion of these objects can result in damage to the reticulum, triggering episodes of traumatic reticulum peritonitis and its sequelae, such as traumatic pericarditis, liver inflammation, spleen abscesses and more. Clinical signs may vary but include abnormal behavior, reduced rumen motility, poorly digested feces, fever and signs of pain. The diagnosis is based on the evaluation of the animal's clinical signs, together with complementary tests, such as blood count, biochemistry, ultrasound and radiography. It is important to consider hematological changes, such as leukocytosis and hyperfibrinogenemia, as key indicators of this condition. Diagnosis also involves foreign body pain testing. Treatment can be conservative or surgical. The conservative approach involves administering antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and intravenous solutions, in addition to treating underlying nutritional deficiencies. The surgical option requires removal of the foreign body from the reticulum, followed by post-operative care.

The state of Santa Catarina is the largest national producer of onions. The consumption of onion (Allium cepa) by domestic animals can cause hemolytic anemia and hyperhemoglobinemia of Heinz bodies in erythrocytes. The epidemiological data and the pathological clinical picture were obtained during a visit to the property where the disease occurred. A herd of 54 beef cattle from a property in the municipality of Bom Retiro/SC, was placed in an onion crop, which had not been completely harvested because it was outside the desired standard for trade. The animals remained in this field for eight days. At the end of this period, all of them presented apathy, anorexia, brown urine and mucous membranes and an onion odor on expiration. The macroscopic changes observed were pale mucous membranes, blood with decreased viscosity and increased clotting time, liver with an evident lobular pattern and remains of onion in the rumen. The carcass gave off a strong onion odor. By histological analysis, there was central lobular coagulation necrosis in bridging in the liver. In the kidneys, there were intracytoplasmic hyaline droplets in tubular epithelial cells and a deposit of eosinophilic material in the lumen of the tubules. For the diagnosis of onion poisoning, epidemiological data associated with clinical signs, such as pale mucous membranes with evidence of hemoglobin pigmentation (brown mucosa) and hemoglobinuria, should be taken into account. This article seems to be the first report of onion poisoning in cattle in Brazil.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of an essential oil blend (EO), based on cinnamaldehyde and diallyl disulfide, associated or not with antibiotics on intake and nutrient digestibility, ingestive behavior, rumen fermentation, ruminal microbial synthesis, and blood metabolites of feedlot cattle fed a no-forage diet. The study was carried out as a Latin Square with five treatments consisting of a blend of essential oil (EO), monensin (MON) and virginiamycin (VM), both separately and combined as follows: CON (monensin at 30 mg kg1 DM), VM (virginiamycin at 25 mg kg1 DM and monensin at 30 mg kg1 DM), MEO25 (monensin at 30 mg kg1 DM and EO at 25 mg kg1 DM), MEO35 (monensin at 30 mg kg1 DM and EO at 35 mg kg1 DM) and EO35 (blend of EO at 35 mg kg1 DM). There were no effects from additives and their combinations on the intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients or ingestive behavior. Furthermore, treatments did not modify the ruminal pH, nor the concentration of short-chain fatty acids and ammonia, nor the microbial protein synthesis. Blood glucose concentration was higher 4 h after morning feeding for all treatments. There was a significant contrast between the VM and EO for the blood concentration of D-Lactate and L-Lactate. There was no difference between the additives in the concentration of cortisol metabolites in the feces. The blend of essential oil studied, containing cinnamaldehyde and diallyl disulfide, associated or not with antibiotics, does not change the nutritional parameters nor the metabolism of feedlot cattle fed a no-forage diet.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the increasing levels of inclusion of palm kernel cake (PKC) in the diet on the performance of feedlot heifers. Forty-eight Nelore heifers with an initial weight of 274 ± 4.58 kg, at 24 months of age, were confined for 98 days in a feedlot. The animals were allocated to the four treatments in a completely randomized design. Treatments consisted of PKC levels of 0 (control), 10, 20, and 30% in the total dry matter of the diet. The roughage:concentrate ratio in the diets was 30:70. Ether extract intake increased, whereas the intakes of non-fiber carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients decreased with the inclusion of PKC. The apparent digestibility of all nutrients decreased, as well as the amounts of nitrogen digested and retained. Microbial protein synthesis and its efficiency also declined. The inclusion of up to 20% PKC increased feeding time and reduced rumination time of heifers. Intake and rumination efficiencies decreased with the inclusion of PKC in the diet. Final weight and average daily gain did not change, but feed efficiency increased with the inclusion of PKC. The inclusion of up to 30% PKC in the diet of feedlot heifers is recommended.(AU)
