Resumo
A suinocultura moderna ainda continua priorizando os sistemas de criação em larga escala, com plantéis de genética superior sendo mantidos em confinamento durante todo o ciclo de produção. A complexidade de tais sistemas impõe riscos à saúde e ao bem-estar de matrizes durante as várias fases do ciclo reprodutivo (gestação, lactação e acasalamento), assim como aos leitões durante o período de amamentação, especialmente quando os animais são mantidos sob estresse térmico. Considerando que a seleção genética dos reprodutores e o controle da ambiência tem resultado no melhoramento das características de desempenho, o grande desafio é evitar ou minimizar as consequências destes avanços tecnológicos no comprometimento da saúde e do bem-estar, uma vez que fêmeas altamente prolíficas exibem dificuldades para adaptar-se aos desafios ambientais e, por pressuposto, elas estão expostas a problemas comportamentais, fisiológicos e imunológicos.Actually, the priority of the swine industry continue to be the production systems in large scale, with herds of superior genetic maintained under confinement during all the production cycle. The complexity of these systems impose risks to health and welfare of sows during the various phases of reproductive cycle (gestation, lactation and breeding), as well as the piglets during the period of suckling, especially when the animals are kept under thermal stress. Considering that the genetic selection of breeding pigs and the control of environment have been resulted on improvement of performance traits, the great challenge is to avoid or minimize the consequences of these technological advances on the deterioration of health and welfare, as highly prolific females pigs have difficulties in coping with environmental challenges, so they are exposed to behavioural, physiological and immunological problems.
