Resumo
Hipertensão refere-se á elevação da pressão arterial sistêmica acima do nível considerado normal para a população da espécie em questão. Embora muitos órgãos possam ser afetados por suas conseqüências, os efeitos predominantes ocorrem sobre o coração, cérebro, olhos e rins. Estima-se que 2% da população, canina seja hipertensa, sendo a maioria dos casos de origem secundária. Assim. A identificação e remoção da causa desencadeante são os mais importantes passos do tratamento clínico e, a menos que a causa subjacente seja curável ou controlável, o cão ficará sob medicação anti-hipertensiva indefinidamente, a fim de prevenir conseqüências adversas ligadas à doença e assim melhorar a sua qualidade de vida. Nesta revisão são descritas as características fisiopatológicas da hipertensão arterial em cães, buscando-se sumarizar os princípios clínicos-terapêuticos que regem a abordagem de tais pacientes na prática veterinária(AU)Hypertension refers to the elevation of systemic arterial pressure above the level considered normal for the species population. Although many organs may be affected by its consequences, the predominant effects are seen in the heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys. It is estimated that 2% canine population is hypertensive, being the majority of these cases of secondary origion. Therefone, the identification and removal of the triggering cause are the most important steps of clinical approach, unless the underlying cause is curable or manageable, the dog will have to be on anti-hypertensive medication indefinitely to prevent adverse consequences related to the disease and thereby improve the animals life quality. In this review are described the physipathologic features of arterial hypertension in dogs, giving special attention to the clinical and therapeutic that are required when managing these patients in veterinary practice(AU)
