Resumo

O presente artigo apresenta uma breve história da medicina veterinária no mundo e importantes informações sobre o início da mesma no Brasil, destacando-se a contribuição da Alemanha na formação de Médicos Veterinários na região Nordeste do País. É evidenciada a relevante participação dos padres beneditinos na criação das instituições de ensino da Agronomia e Veterinária no estado de Pernambuco. Escolas estas que viriam a ser posteriormente a Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. No tocante a Reprodução Animal no Nordeste relata-se o pioneirismo do Prof. José Wanderley Braga responsável pelo nascimento do primeiro animal utilizando a inseminação artificial, tendo sido também o protagonista da primeira colheita e processamento de sêmen bovino no Recife. São apresentados alguns dos médicos veterinários que iniciaram e prestaram relevantes serviços às atividades de Reprodução Animal no Nordeste brasileiro, citando-se também a importância das Universidades para o desenvolvimento desta área. Destaca-se as principais instituições que incrementaram a Reprodução Animal tanto nacional como regional, como os centros de tecnologia de sêmen, o Colégio Brasileiro de Reprodução Animal, (CBRA) Sociedade Brasileira de Transferência de Embriões (SBTE),dentre outras. Salienta-se a importância do Congresso Norte Nordeste de Reprodução Animal (CONERA) para o desenvolvimento desta área na região de sua abrangência. Relata-se a criação do CONERA e suas edições, além dos Médicos Veterinários outorgados com o Prêmio Hans Merkt. São apresentadas ainda dois a importantes programas de pós-graduação na região que foram significativos para os avanços da Reprodução Animal no Nordeste.(AU)

This article presents a brief history of veterinary medicine in the world and important information about its beginning in Brazil, highlighting the contribution of Germany in the training of Veterinarians in the Northeast region of the country. The relevant participation of Benedictine priests in the creation of agronomy and veterinary educational institutions in the state of Pernambuco is evidenced. These schools would later become the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco. Regarding Animal Reproduction in the Northeast, the pioneering study of Prof. José Wanderley Braga responsible for the birth of the first animal using artificial insemination is also the protagonist of the first harvest and processing of bovine semen in Recife. Some of the veterinarians who started and provided relevant services to animal reproduction activities in northeastern Brazil are presented, also citing the importance of universities for the development of this area. We highlight the main institutions that increased animal reproduction both nationally and regionally, such as semen technology centers, the Brazilian College of Animal Reproduction, (CBRA) Brazilian Society of Embryo Transfer (SBTE), among others. The importance of the North-Northeast Congress of Animal Reproduction (CONERA) for the development of this area in the region of its scope is emphasized. It is reported the creation of CONERA and its editions, in addition to the Veterinarians awarded with the Hans Merkt Award. Two are also presented to important graduate programs in the region that were significant for the advances of Animal Reproduction in the Northeast.(AU)
