Resumo

Das afecções que acometem a cavidade oral de cães a mais prevalente é a doença periodontal. O objetivo do tratamento periodontal é remover os cálculos dentários utilizando instrumentos odontológicos manuais ou mecânicos. Após a remoção cirúrgica dos cálculos é importante realizar a prevenção com uso de produtos químicos ou físicos, no intuito de aumentar o tempo de retorno da doença periodontal. Considerando a importância de manter uma boa saúde oral, o estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito do gel Tropiclean Fresh Breath Clean Teeth Gel® associado ou não ao Tropiclean Fresh Breath Oral care water additive for dogs®, na prevenção e retardo do reaparecimento dos cálculos dentários em 45 cães após remoção dos mesmos através do tratamento cirúrgico e seu efeito sobre o pH oral desses animais. Os animais do estudo tiveram acompanhamento fotográfico mensal, cujas imagens foram analisadas através de um programa computacional para verificar em quanto tempo haveria nova deposição de cálculos dentários. As variáveis analisadas neste estudo foram o tipo de tratamento recebido em relação ao grupo controle, se o tipo de alimentação influenciou no pH oral dos cães e se a deposição de cálculos dentários foi influenciada pelo tipo de alimentação. Houve diferença estatística entre os animais que receberam um dos dois tipos de tratamento de manutenção em relação ao grupo controle e verificou-se que os diferentes tipos de alimentação não influenciaram no acúmulo dos cálculos dentários e no desenvolvimento da doença periodontal. Ocorreu também aumento do pH oral após utilização do gel. Concluiu-se que os produtos comerciais utilizados neste estudo como métodos preventivos, foram eficazes e conseguiram manter a saúde da cavidade oral dos animais por tempo prolongado, demonstrando a importância da higienização oral após remoção cirúrgica dos cálculos dentários.

Of all the affections of the oral cavity of dogs the most prevalent is periodontal disease. The purpose of periodontal treatment is to remove dental stones using manual or mechanical dental instruments. After the surgical removal of the calculi, it is important to carry out the prevention with the use of chemical or physical products, in order to increase the time of return of periodontal disease. Considering the importance of maintaining good oral health, the study was developed with the objective of evaluating the effect of Tropiclean Fresh Breath Clean Teeth Gel® with or without Tropiclean Fresh Breath Oral care water additive for dogs®, in the prevention and retardation of recurrence of dental calculus in 45 dogs after removal by surgical treatment and its effect on the oral pH of these animals. The animals in the study had monthly photographic follow-up, whose images were analyzed by a computer program to check how long there would be new deposition of dental calculations. The variables analyzed in this study were the type of treatment received in relation to the control group, if the kind of food influenced the oral pH of the dogs and if the deposition of dental calculi was influenced by the kind of food. There was a statistical difference between the animals that received one of the two types of maintenance treatment in relation to the control group and it was verified that the different types of food did not influence the accumulation of dental calculi and the development of periodontal disease. There was also an increase in oral pH after gel use. It was concluded that the commercial products used in this study as preventive methods were effective and were able to maintain the health of the oral cavity of the animals for a long time, demonstrating the importance of oral hygiene after surgical removal of the dental calculations.
