BACKGROUND: Transnasal endoscopy (TNE) does not require general anesthesia, an attractive characteristic for monitoring eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). We evaluated the adequacy of TNE-obtained esophageal biopsies using the EoE Histology Scoring System (EoEHSS). METHODS: The Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders database was searched for esophageal biopsies obtained by the same endoscopist, using either TNE or conventional endoscopy (CE). Whole-slide biopsy images were evaluated. The Mann-Whitney test was used for median (interquartile range) values and Fisher exact test for categorical variables. P ≤ .05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Median age (P = .82) or height (P = .83) did not differ between TNE (n = 17) and CE (n = 17) groups. Although median largest piece size (mm2) differed between the groups (TNE: 0.59 (0.45, 0.86), CE: 2.24 (1.09, 2.82), P < .001), all 8 EoEHSS features were evaluated in each group; only 1 feature (lamina propria fibrosis) was missing in both groups (TNE: 19/34, CE: 11/34, P = .09). The median peak eosinophil count/high-power field differed (TNE: 3 (0, 29), CE: 16 (1, 66), P = .03), but overall grade (TNE: 0.17 (0.10, 0.29), CE: 0.22 (0.14, 0.46), P = .12), stage (TNE: 0.14 (0.10, 0.24), CE: 0.20 (0.10, 0.43), P = .15), and non-eosinophil-related individual EoEHSS scores did not differ. CONCLUSIONS: TNE- and CE-obtained esophageal biopsies are similarly sufficient for evaluation of key pathological features in EoE.

BACKGROUND: The recommended schedule for single capsule bismuth quadruple therapy (scBQT, Pylera) includes a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) two times a day and three scBQT capsules four times a day. Four times a day treatments are inconvenient and reduce adherence. In contrast, adherence improves with three times a day schedules. In clinical practice, many gastroenterologists use four capsule scBQT three times a day. However, the effectiveness and safety of this latter approach remain uncertain. AIM: To assess the effectiveness and safety of scBQT administered three times a day in the patients included in the European Registry on Helicobacter pylori Management (Hp-EuReg). METHODS: All Spanish adult patients registered in the Asociación Española de Gastroenterología Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) database from June 2013 to March 2021 receiving 10-day scBQT were analysed. Modified intention-to-treat effectiveness, adherence and the safety of scBQT given three times a day were calculated and compared with the four times a day schedule. A multivariate analysis was performed to determine independent factors predicting cure of the infection. RESULTS: Of the 3712 cases, 2516 (68%) were four times a day and 1196 (32%) three times a day. Mean age was 51 years, 63% were women and 15% had a peptic ulcer. The three times a day schedule showed significantly better overall cure rates than four times a day (1047/1112, 94%; 95% CI 92.7 to 95.6 vs 2207/2423, 91%; 95% CI 89.9 to 92.2, respectively, p=0.002). Adherence and safety data were similar for both regimens. In the multivariate analysis, three times a day dosage, first-line therapy, use of standard or high-dose PPIs and adherence over 90% were significantly associated with cure of the infection. CONCLUSIONS: ScBQT prescribed three times a day was more effective than the traditional four times a day schedule. No differences were observed in treatment adherence or safety.

The role of polymorphism rs9939609 of the FTO gene has been related with fat mass and cardiovascular risk in adults, but it remains unclear in children and adolescents. Hence, the main aim of this study was to determine the FTO polymorphism effects on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), physical activity (PA), inflammatory markers, and cardiovascular risk both in cross-sectional analysis and after two-years of follow-up in children and adolescents. A total of 2129 participants were included in this study. The rs9939609 polymorphism was genotyped. Body composition measurements, CRF, and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were determined at baseline and after two-year of follow-up. Moreover, plasma leptin and adiponectin were also determined as inflammatory markers. Furthermore, an index of cardiovascular disease risk factors (CVDRF-I) was calculated. Codominant (TT vs. TA vs. AA) and dominant (AA+AT vs. TT) models were applied for statistical analysis. The results showed a main effect of the FTO genotype on body composition measures in both first and third year (p < 0.05), with lower adiposity in TT compared with AA or AA+AT group. These differences were maintained after accounting for pubertal maturity, sex, age, VO2 max, and MVPA. Moreover, lower leptin level was observed in TT compared to AA+AT group in the third year. An interaction in Gene*Time*Sex was found in height and neck circumference in dominant model (p = 0.047; p = 0.020, respectively). No differences were found in CRF, MVPA nor CVDRF-I between groups. Hence, homozygous TT allele could be a protective factor against weight gain from early childhood.

The ecological niche centrality hypothesis states that population abundance is determined by the position in the ecological niche, expecting higher abundances towards the center of the niche and lower at the periphery. However, the variations in the conditions that favor the persistence of populations between the center and the periphery of the niche can be a surrogate of stress factors that are reflected in the production of metabolites in plants. In this study we tested if metabolomic similarity and diversity in populations of the tree species Eucryphia cordifolia Cav. vary according to their position with respect to the structure of the ecological niche. We hypothesize that populations growing near the centroid should exhibit lower metabolites diversity than plants growing at the periphery of the niche. The ecological niche of the species was modeled using correlative approaches and bioclimatic variables to define central and peripheral localities from which we chose four populations to obtain their metabolomic information using UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS. We observed that populations farther away from the centroid tend to have higher metabolome diversity, thus supporting our expectation of the niche centrality hypothesis. Nonetheless, the Shannon index showed a marked variation in metabolome diversity at the seasonal level, with summer and autumn being the periods with higher metabolite diversity compared to winter and spring. We conclude that both the environmental variation throughout the year in combination with the structure of the ecological niche are relevant to understand the variation in expression of metabolites in plants.

RESUMO

Clinically significant endemic mycoses (fungal infections) in the United States (U.S.) include Blastomyces dermatitidis, Histoplasma capsulatum, and Coccidioides immitis/posadasii. While the majority of infections go clinically unnoticed, symptomatic disease can occur in immunocompromised or hospitalized patients, and occasionally in immune-competent individuals. Clinical manifestations vary widely and their diagnosis may require fungal culture, making the rapid diagnosis a challenge. Imaging can be helpful in making a clinical diagnosis prior to laboratory confirmation, as well as assist in characterizing disease extent and severity. In this review, we discuss the three major endemic fungal infections that occur in the U.S., including mycology, epidemiology, clinical presentations, and typical imaging features with an emphasis on the pediatric population.

Nowadays, the quality of natural products is an issue of great interest in our society due to the increase in adulteration cases in recent decades. Coffee, one of the most popular beverages worldwide, is a food product that is easily adulterated. To prevent fraudulent practices, it is necessary to develop feasible methodologies to authenticate and guarantee not only the coffee's origin but also its variety, as well as its roasting degree. In the present study, a C18 reversed-phase liquid chromatography (LC) technique coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was applied to address the characterization and classification of Arabica and Robusta coffee samples from different production regions using chemometrics. The proposed non-targeted LC-HRMS method using electrospray ionization in negative mode was applied to the analysis of 306 coffee samples belonging to different groups depending on the variety (Arabica and Robusta), the growing region (e.g., Ethiopia, Colombia, Nicaragua, Indonesia, India, Uganda, Brazil, Cambodia and Vietnam), and the roasting degree. Analytes were recovered with hot water as the extracting solvent (coffee brewing). The data obtained were considered the source of potential descriptors to be exploited for the characterization and classification of the samples using principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). In addition, different adulteration cases, involving nearby production regions and different varieties, were evaluated by pairs (e.g., Vietnam Arabica-Vietnam Robusta, Vietnam Arabica-Cambodia and Vietnam Robusta-Cambodia). The coffee adulteration studies carried out with partial least squares (PLS) regression demonstrated the good capability of the proposed methodology to quantify adulterant levels down to 15%, accomplishing calibration and prediction errors below 2.7% and 11.6%, respectively.

PURPOSE: The present study compared the effects of eccentric cycling (ECC) and conventional concentric cycling (CONC) training on muscle function, body composition, functional performance, and quality of life (QOL) of patients with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: Twenty patients (age: 69.6 ± 10.1 years, forced expiratory volume in 1-s: 73.2 ± 11.4% of predicted) were randomly allocated to ECC (n = 10) or CONC (n = 10) group. They performed 12 weeks of ECC or CONC training at similar perceived exertion. The workload, heart rate (HR), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and dyspnea were monitored during cycling. Outcomes measures included maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) strength of the knee extensors, rate of force development (RFD), lower limb fat-free (LLFFM) and fat (LLFM) mass, 6-min walking test (6MWT), timed up-and-go test (TUG), stairs ascending (SAWT) and descending walking time (SDWT), and QOL assessed by the Saint George's respiratory questionnaire. RESULTS: ECC produced on average threefold greater (P < 0.001) workload (211.8 ± 106.0 kJ) than CONC (78.1 ± 62.6 kJ) over 34 training sessions. ECC showed 1.5 ± 2.1% greater SpO2, 24.7 ± 4.1% lower HR, and 64.4 ± 29.6% lower dyspnea in average than CONC (P < 0.001). ECC increased LLFFM (4.5 ± 6.2%; P = 0.03), while CONC decreased LLFM (3.3 ± 6.4%; P = 0.04) after training. Both ECC and CONC reduced (P < 0.05) SAWT (- 16.1 ± 9.3% vs - 10.1 ± 14.4%) and SDWT (- 12.2 ± 12.6% vs - 14.4 ± 14.7%), and improved (P < 0.05) QOL (33.4 ± 38.8 vs 26.1 ± 36.6%) similarly, but only ECC improved (P < 0.05) RFD (69-199%), TUG (13.6 ± 13.6%), and 6MWT (25.3 ± 27.7%). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that ECC training with less cardio-pulmonary demands was more effective in increasing functional performance and muscle mass for COPD patients than CONC training.

A non-targeted LC-HRMS fingerprinting methodology based on a C18 reversed-phase mode under universal gradient elution using an Orbitrap mass analyzer was developed to characterize and classify Spanish honey samples. A simple sample treatment consisting of honey dissolution with water and a 1:1 dilution with methanol was proposed. A total of 136 honey samples belonging to different blossom and honeydew honeys from different botanical varieties produced in different Spanish geographical regions were analyzed. The obtained LC-HRMS fingerprints were employed as sample chemical descriptors for honey pattern recognition by principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The results demonstrated a superior honey classification and discrimination capability with respect to previous non-targeted HPLC-UV fingerprinting approaches, with them being able to discriminate and authenticate the honey samples according to their botanical origins. Overall, noteworthy cross-validation multiclass predictions were accomplished with sensitivity and specificity values higher than 96.2%, except for orange/lemon blossom (BL) and rosemary (RO) blossom-honeys. The proposed methodology was also able to classify and authenticate the climatic geographical production region of the analyzed honey samples, with cross-validation sensitivity and specificity values higher than 87.1% and classification errors below 10.5%.

The feasibility of non-targeted off-line SPE LC-LRMS polyphenolic fingerprints to address the classification and authentication of Spanish honey samples based on both botanical origin (blossom and honeydew honeys) and geographical production region was evaluated. With this aim, 136 honey samples belonging to different botanical varieties (multifloral and monofloral) obtained from different Spanish geographical regions with specific climatic conditions were analyzed. Polyphenolic compounds were extracted by off-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) using HLB (3 mL, 60 mg) cartridges. The obtained extracts were then analyzed by C18 reversed-phase LC coupled to low-resolution mass spectrometry in a hybrid quadrupole-linear ion trap mass analyzer and using electrospray in negative ionization mode. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were employed to assess the pattern recognition capabilities of the obtained fingerprints to address honey classification and authentication. In general, a good sample discrimination was accomplished by PLS-DA, being able to differentiate both blossom-honey and honeydew-honey samples according to botanical varieties. Multiclass predictions by cross-validation for the set of blossom-honey samples showed sensitivity, specificity, and classification ratios higher than 60%, 85%, and 87%, respectively. Better results were obtained for the set of honeydew-honey samples, exhibiting 100% sensitivity, specificity, and classification ratio values. The proposed fingerprints also demonstrated that they were good honey chemical descriptors to deal with climatic and geographical issues. Characteristic polyphenols of each botanical variety were tentatively identified by LC-MS/MS in multiple-reaction monitoring mode to propose possible honey markers for future experiments (i.e., naringin for orange/lemon blossom honeys, syringic acid in thyme honeys, or galangin in rosemary honeys).

INTRODUCTION: The safety of Helicobacter pylori eradication treatments and to what extent adverse events (AEs) influence therapeutic compliance in clinical practice are hardly known. Our aim was to assess the frequency, type, intensity, and duration of AEs, and their impact on compliance, for the most frequently used treatments in the "European Registry on Helicobacter pylori management." METHODS: Systematic prospective noninterventional registry of the clinical practice of European gastroenterologists (27 countries, 300 investigators) on the management of H. pylori infection in routine clinical practice. All prescribed eradication treatments and their corresponding safety profile were recorded. AEs were classified depending on the intensity of symptoms as mild/moderate/severe and as serious AEs. All data were subject to quality control. RESULTS: The different treatments prescribed to 22,492 patients caused at least 1 AE in 23% of the cases; the classic bismuth-based quadruple therapy was the worst tolerated (37% of AEs). Taste disturbance (7%), diarrhea (7%), nausea (6%), and abdominal pain (3%) were the most frequent AEs. The majority of AEs were mild (57%), 6% were severe, and only 0.08% were serious, with an average duration of 7 days. The treatment compliance rate was 97%. Only 1.3% of the patients discontinued treatment due to AEs. Longer treatment durations were significantly associated with a higher incidence of AEs in standard triple, concomitant, bismuth quadruple, and levofloxacin triple or quadruple therapies. DISCUSSION: Helicobacter pylori eradication treatment frequently induces AEs, although they are usually mild and of limited duration. Their appearance does not interfere significantly with treatment compliance.

BACKGROUND: Coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world, consumed as an infusion of ground roasting coffee beans with a characteristic taste and flavor. Two main varieties, Arabica and Robusta, are produced worldwide. Furthermore, interest of consumers in quality attributes related to coffee production region and varieties is increasing. Thus, it is necessary to encourage the development of simple methodologies to authenticate and guarantee the coffee origin, variety and roasting degree, aiming to prevent fraudulent practices. RESULTS: C18 high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) fingerprints obtained after brewing coffees without any sample treatment other than filtration (i.e. considerably reducing sample manipulation) were employed as sample chemical descriptors for subsequent coffee characterization and classification by principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares regression-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). PLS-DA showed good classification capabilities regarding coffee origin, variety and roasting degree when employing HPLC-FLD fingerprints, although overlapping occurred for some sample groups. However, the discrimination power increased when selecting HPLC-FLD fingerprinting segments richer in discriminant features, which were deduced from PLS-DA loading plots. In this case, excellent separation was observed and 100% classification rates for both PLS-DA calibrations and predictions were obtained (all samples were correctly classified within their corresponding groups). CONCLUSION: HPLC-FLD fingerprinting segments were3 found to be suitable chemical descriptors for discriminating the origin (country of production), variety (Arabica and Robusta) and roasting degree of coffee. Therefore, HPLC-FLD fingerprinting can be proposed as a feasible, simple and cheap methodology to address coffee authentication, especially for developing coffee production countries. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

A novel group of S100- and CD34-positive spindle cell tumors with distinctive stromal and perivascular hyalinization harboring recurrent gene fusions involving kinases including RAF1, BRAF, NTRK1/2/3, and RET have been recently reported. To our knowledge, no such cases harboring ALK rearrangements have been identified. We report a previously healthy 41-year-old male with a 12-cm intramuscular shoulder mass. The tumor was composed of bland-appearing spindled to epithelioid cells, arranged in a patternless pattern in a background of loose myxoid stroma containing striking amianthoid-like stromal collagen and perivascular rings. In accordance with the previously reported tumors, the tumor cells showed diffuse immunopositivity with S100 and CD34, while lacking SOX10 expression. Targeted RNA-based next-generation sequencing identified a novel serine/threonine-protein phosphatase PP1-beta-catalytic subunit (PPP1CB)-ALK fusion gene. Although ALK break-apart was not detected by FISH, likely due to a paracentric inversion of chromosome 2, the presence of the fusion was confirmed by Sanger sequencing showing a 10-bp linker between exon 6 of PPP1CB and intron 19 of ALK while maintaining reading frame. Subsequent ALK-1 immunostain exhibited diffuse cytoplasmic staining in the tumor cells. Our case expands the molecular genetic spectrum of the distinctive group of spindle cell tumors with CD34/S100+ immunophenotype, supporting the important role of various kinases as drivers of oncogenesis. Awareness of this entity including its unique morphologic and immunophenotypic features as well as its interchangeable kinase gene fusions is crucial for correct classification and potential targeted therapy, particularly in aggressive subsets.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Due to the poor eradication rates of standard triple therapy, the addition of bismuth salts has been proposed for first-line eradication of Helicobacter pylori. We assessed the effectiveness and safety of the combination of bismuth and the standard, clarithromycin-containing triple therapy in eradication of H pylori infection, using data from a large multi-center registry. METHODS: We performed an interim analysis of data from the European Registry on H pylori Management, a prospective trial registering clinical data and outcomes from infected patients from 27 countries in Europe since 2013. We extracted data on 1141 treatment-naïve patients who received first-line treatment with bismuth salts (240 mg) and a proton pump inhibitor (57% received esomeprazole, 18% received omeprazole, 11% received pantoprazole, and 14% received rabeprazole), amoxicillin (1 g), and clarithromycin (500 mg), all taken twice daily. RESULTS: Intention to treat and per-protocol rates of eradication were 88% and 94%, respectively. Intention to treat eradication increased to 93% in patients who received 14-day treatments. Adverse events occurred in 36% of patients; 76% of these events were mild, with a mean duration of 6 days. In multivariate analysis, eradication was associated with treatment compliance (odds ratio [OR], 13.0), a double dose (equivalent to 40 mg omeprazole) of proton pump inhibitor (OR, 4.7), and 14-day duration of treatment (OR, 2.0). CONCLUSIONS: In an analysis of data from a large multi-center registry, we found the addition of bismuth to 14-day standard triple therapy with clarithromycin and amoxicillin to eradicate H pylori infection in more than 90% of patients, based on intention to treat analysis, with an acceptable safety profile and level of adherence. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors arising in infants are rare, poorly investigated and mostly reported as isolated cases or as a part of larger series thus, their clinicopathological and molecular features are essentially unknown. Archival files from two large pediatric institutions and a tumor registry were queried for pediatric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors. Available material from patients ≤12 months of age was reviewed. Additional immunostains (ALK-1, D240, WT1) and ALK-FISH studies were performed as needed. Targeted anchored multiplex PCR with next-generation sequencing was done in all cases. A total of 12 of 131 infantile cases (mean 5.5 months) were identified (M:F of 2:1). Anatomic locations included intestinal/mesenteric (n = 6), head/neck (n = 3), and viscera (n = 3). Half of tumors showed a hypocellular myxoid pattern, perivascular condensation, and prominent vasculature with vague glomeruloid structures present in four of them. The remaining cases exhibited a more cellular pattern with minimal myxoid component. ALK-1 immunohistochemistry was positive in most cases (11/12) with cytoplasmic-diffuse (n = 6), cytoplasmic-granular (n = 2), and dot-like (n = 3) staining patterns. ALK fusion partners identified in five cases included EML4, TPM4, RANBP2, and a novel KLC1. Three inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors showed fusions with other kinases including TFG-ROS1 and novel FN1-ROS1 and RBPMS-NTRK3 rearrangements. Favorable outcome was documented in most cases (10/11) with available follow-up (median 17 months) while three patients were successfully treated with crizotinib. In summary, infantile inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are rare and can exhibit paucicellular, extensively myxoid/vascular morphology with peculiar immunophenotype mimicking other mesenchymal or vascular lesions. All tumors harbored kinase fusions involving ALK, ROS1, and NTRK3 including three novel fusion partners (KLC1, FN1, and RBPMS, respectively). A favorable response to crizotinib seen in three cases supports its potential use in infants as seen in older patients. Awareness of these unusual morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features is critical for appropriate diagnosis and optimized targeted therapy.

Society's interest in the quality of food products with certain attributes has increased, the attribute of a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) being an effective tool to guarantee the quality and geographical origin of a given food product. In Spain, two paprika production areas with PDO (La Vera and Murcia) are recognized. In the present work, targeted UHPLC-HRMS polyphenolic and capsaicinoid profiling through the TraceFinderTM screening software, using homemade accurate mass databases, was proposed as a source of chemical descriptors, to address the characterization, classification, and authentication of paprika. A total of 126 paprika samples from different production regions-Spain (La Vera PDO and Murcia PDO) and the Czech Republic, each including different flavor varieties, were analyzed. UHPLC-HRMS polyphenolic profiles showed to be good chemical descriptors to achieve paprika classification and authentication, based on the production region, through principal component analysis and partial least squares regression-discriminant analysis, with classification rates of 82%, 86%, and 100% for La Vera PDO, Murcia PDO, and the Czech Republic, respectively. In addition, a perfect classification was also accomplished among the flavor varieties for the Murcia PDO and Czech Republic samples. By employing the UHPLC-HRMS polyphenolic and capsaicinoid profiles as chemical descriptors, acceptable discrimination among La Vera PDO flavor varieties was also achieved.

The importance of monitoring bioactive substances as food features to address sample classification and authentication is increasing. In this work, targeted liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) polyphenolic and curcuminoid profiles were evaluated as chemical descriptors to deal with the characterization and classification of turmeric and curry samples. The profiles corresponding to bioactive substances were obtained by TraceFinderTM software using accurate mass databases with 53 and 24 polyphenolic and curcuminoid related compounds, respectively. For that purpose, 21 turmeric and 9 curry samples commercially available were analyzed in triplicate by a simple liquid-solid extraction procedure using dimethyl sulfoxide as extracting solvent. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed profiles were excellent chemical descriptors for sample characterization and classification by principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), achieving 100% classification rates. Curcuminoids and some specific phenolic acids such as trans-cinnamic, ferulic and sinapic acids, helped on the discrimination of turmeric samples; polyphenols, in general, were responsible for the curry sample distinction. Besides, the combination of both polyphenolic and curcuminoid profiles was necessary for the simultaneous characterization and classification of turmeric and curry samples. Discrimination among turmeric species such as Curcuma longa vs. Curcuma zedoaria, as well as among different Curcuma longa varieties (Alleppey, Madras and Erode) was also accomplished.

Recently, the authenticity of food products has become a great social concern. Considering the complexity of the food chain and that many players are involved between production and consumption; food adulteration practices are rising as it is easy to conduct fraud without being detected. This is the case for nut fruit processed products, such as almond flours, that can be adulterated with cheaper nuts (hazelnuts or peanuts), giving rise to not only economic fraud but also important effects on human health. Non-targeted HPLC-UV chromatographic fingerprints were evaluated as chemical descriptors to achieve nut sample characterization and classification using multivariate chemometric methods. Nut samples were extracted by sonication and centrifugation, and defatted with hexane; extracting procedure and conditions were optimized to maximize the generation of enough discriminant features. The obtained HPLC-UV chromatographic fingerprints were then analyzed by means of principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to carry out the classification of nut samples. The proposed methodology allowed the classification of samples not only according to the type of nut but also based on the nut thermal treatment employed (natural, fried or toasted products).

BACKGROUND: Rosemary forms an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis with a group of soilborne fungi belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota, which can modify the plant metabolome responsible for the antioxidant capacity and other health beneficial properties of rosemary. RESULTS: The effect of inoculating rosemary plants with an AM fungus on their growth via their polyphenolic fingerprinting was evaluated after analyzing leaf extracts from non-inoculated and inoculated rosemary plants by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). Plant growth parameters indicated that mycorrhizal inoculation significantly increased plant height and biomass. Chemical modifications in the plant polyphenolic profile distribution were found after a principal components analysis (PCA) loading plots study. Four compounds hosting strong antioxidant properties - ferulic acid, asiatic acid, carnosol, and vanillin - were related to mycorrhizal rosemary plants while caffeic and chlorogenic acids had a higher influence on non-mycorrhizal plants. CONCLUSION: Mycorrhization was found to stimulate growth to obtain a higher biomass of plant leaves in a short time, avoiding chemical fertilization, while analytical results demonstrate that there is an alteration in the distribution of polyphenols in plants colonized by the symbiotic fungus, which can be related to an improvement in nutritional properties with future industrial significance. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.
