RESUMO

While most anuran species are highly vocal, few of them seem to be endowed with a complex call repertoire. Odorrana tormota, combines a remarkable vocalization complexity with auditory sensitivity over an extended spectral range spanning from audible to ultrasonic frequencies. This species is also exceptional for its ability to modify its middle ear tuning by closing the Eustachian tubes (ET). Using scanning laser Doppler vibrometry, the tympanal vibrations were measured to investigate if the tuning shift caused by the ET closure contributes to intraspecific acoustic communication. To gain insight into the inner ear frequency selectivity and sensitivity of this species, distortion product otoacoustic emissions were recorded at multiple frequency-level combinations. Our measurements of inner ear responses indicated that in O. tormota each sex is more sensitive to the frequencies of the other sex's vocalizations, female ears are more sensitive to 2-7 kHz, while male ears are more sensitive to 3-15 kHz. We also found that in both sexes the ET closure impacts the sensitivity of the middle and inner ear at frequencies used for communication with conspecifics. This study broadens our understanding of peripheral auditory mechanisms contributing to intraspecific acoustic communication in anurans.

In this study, our purpose is to evaluate cochlear and vestibular function in juveniles with IgA vasculitis using audiometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) tests. Forty children diagnosed with IgA vasculitis from the pediatry clinic and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy children were evaluated with distortion product otoacoustic emissions, audiometry, and cVEMP test in a tertiary hospital. The audiometry average values for both ears of the IgA vasculitis group and the control subjects were compared, and as a result, median 4.7-dB sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) was found for the IgA vasculitis group compared to the control group at 250 Hz and it was statistically significant (p < 0.001). An average of 6.4-dB SHL was detected at 8000 Hz (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference among IgA vasculitis and control groups regarding measurement results of average p1-n1 latency time of both ears (0.9 ms (ms) increase, p = 0.035). In IgA vasculitis patients, the median amplitude difference of both ears' average p1 n1 was found to be 5.6 mV, statistically significantly decreased compared to the control group (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: This study, firstly in literature, demonstrated that IgA vasculitis may have association with hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction in children. We think this might be due to autoimmune mechanisms. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Ig A vasculitis is a leukocytoclastic vasculitis with unknown etiology, involving the skin, joints, gastrointestinal system, kidneys, and rarely other organs. • No study has been reported for the cochlear and vestibular association of Ig A vasculitis in current literature. WHAT IS NEW: • This study demonstrated that Ig A vasculitis may have association with hearing loss in children. • This study also demonstrated that Ig A vasculitis may have association with vestibular dysfunction in children.

Despite the predominance of low-frequency hearing in anuran amphibians, a few frog species have evolved high-frequency communication within certain environmental contexts. Huia cavitympanum is the most remarkable anuran with regard to upper frequency limits; it is the first frog species known to emit exclusively ultrasonic signals. Characteristics of the Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions from the amphibian papilla and the basilar papilla were analysed to gain insight into the structures responsible for high-frequency/ultrasound sensitivity. Our results confirm the matching of vocalization spectra and inner ear tuning in this species. Compared to most anurans, H. cavitympanum has a hyperextended hearing range spanning from audible to ultrasonic frequencies, far above the previously established 'spectral limits' for the amphibian ear. The exceptional high-frequency sensitivity in the inner ear of H. cavitympanum illustrates the remarkable plasticity of the auditory system and the extent to which evolution can modify a sensory system to adapt it to its environment.

OBJECTIVE: Because of their high metabolic activity and low-resting oxygen tension, the organs of the inner ear are vulnerable to hypoxia, a condition that occurs repetitively in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). The present study aimed to investigate the inner ear function of patients with OSAHS. METHODS: A total of 58 patients with OSAHS (116 ears) and 20 adults without OSAHS were enrolled in the present study. The clinical features, such as air-conduction thresholds, auditory brainstem response (ABR, 11 times/s and 51 times/s stimulation rates), and distorted products otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), were evaluated and compared between these two groups. RESULTS: Air-conduction thresholds at 4 kHz and 8 kHz were higher in patients with OSAHS compared with controls (P < 0.001). At the rate of 11 times per second, biauricular wave I latencies and wave V latencies in the OSAHS group were longer than those in the control group (1.51 ± 0.13 vs. 1.33 ± 0.07 ms, P < 0.001; 5.65 ± 0.23 vs. 5.53 ± 0.23 ms, P = 0.0016). At the rate of 51 times per second, biauricular wave I latencies and wave V latencies in the OSAHS group were longer than those in the control group (1.64 ± 0.12 vs. 1.44 ± 0.06 ms, P = 0.0001; 5.92 ± 0.26 vs. 5.80 ± 0.18 ms, P = 0.0077). However, there was no significant difference in the wave I and wave V interval between these two groups (P = 0.10). DPOAE amplitude was significantly reduced in OSAHS patients, although no hearing loss was observed. CONCLUSION: High-frequency hearing loss was detected in adults with severe OSAHS, and wave I latencies and wave V latencies of ABR were prolonged.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the healing effect of metformin on noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by measuring audiological, biochemical and histological parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 32 rats were divided into four groups (Group 1: Noise, Group 2: Noise + Metformin, Grup 3: Metformin, Grup 4: Control). Broadband noise was applied to Group 1 and Group 2 after basal measurements. Measuring audiological (distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)), biochemical (total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative status index (OSI), DNA damage, IL-1 beta, IL-6, TNF alfa, HSF-1 and COX-2) and histological parameters. RESULTS: Group 2 had significant decreases in ABR thresholds on day 7 and day 14 compared to day 1. DPOAE values of Group 2 on the 7th and 14th days were significantly higher than the post-noise levels. DNA damage, TOS and OSI values of Group 1 were significantly higher than the other groups. The Cox-2 value of Group 1 was higher than all other groups. The HSF-1 value of Group 2 was significantly higher than that of Group 1. In terms of IL-1 Beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha values, there was no significant difference between groups 2, 3 and 4 and these values were significantly lower than group 1. In histopathological results of our study, no significant difference was found between the groups being exposed to noise and the control group. CONCLUSION: This study showed that early period of Metformin treatment has therapeutic effect on NIHL.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of noise produced by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device on hearing by using objective and subjective audiological assessments. METHODS: A total of 38 patients between the ages of 18 and 50 without hearing loss, and had performed MRI for brain, head, neck or cervical imaging were included in this prospective clinical study. Pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, high frequency audiometry, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) were performed before and after MRI. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in TEOAE, pure tone audiogram, high frequency audiogram and speech audiogram thresholds. In DPOAE, the median value before and after MRI at the frequency of the left ear at 4.0 kHz was 13.6 (8.5-19.9) and 15.7 (8.9-20.7) SNR respectively (p > .05). The median value before MRI at the right ear 4.0 kHz frequency was 14.1 (9.1-20.5) SNR, whereas the median value after MRI was 13.2 (8.8-19.8 SNR (p = 0,03). There was no statistically significant difference in other frequencies in DPOAE. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first objective study that examines the MRI noise on speech audiometry and otoacoustic emission together. However, the effect of MRI noise on hearing pathway is still doubt. Based on the difference at 4 kHz frequency on DPOAE; on-earphones may not sufficiently protect the patients from the MRI noise and this issue should deserve further research.

Objective: To describe the auditory function in early old age in detail based on both psychoacoustic and physiological measures, and to investigate the prevalence of specific audiological and otological pathologies.Design: An unscreened subsample from a population-based geriatric investigation was examined with otoscopy; tympanometry; pure-tone audiometry; word-recognition-in-noise test; distortion-product otoacoustic emissions; and auditory-evoked brainstem responses. Audiometric subtypes and diagnoses were established based on set criteria. The association between word scores and ABR was examined with linear regression analysis.Study Sample: 251 persons aged 70 (113 men, 138 women, born in 1944) that were representative of the inhabitants of the city of Gothenburg.Results: The prevalence of conductive pathology was 2% versus 49% for cochlear and 2% for auditory-neural pathology. Four percent had indeterminate type. Cochlear dysfunction was present in the majority of ears and around 20% performed worse-than-expected on speech testing. Poor performance on the speech in noise test was associated with prolonged interpeak latency interval of ABR waves I-V.Conclusion: Specific otological and audiological pathologies, other than cochlear hearing loss, are rare in the general population at age 70. Additionally, there is subtle evidence of age-related decline of the auditory nerve. Longitudinal follow-up would be of great interest.

Objective: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are sensitive to early indices of cochlear pathology. Pathology to the cochlea is in part mediated by ischaemic related mechanisms. We propose that DPOAEs may provide an objective measure of cardiovascular risk.Design: Cross-sectional.Study sample: The relationships between stroke risk and DPOAEs of 1,107 individuals from the Jackson Heart Study (JHS), an all-African-American cohort, were assessed. Linear regression models were used for analysis among all participants and delimited to normal hearing, defined as either a pure-tone threshold average of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz (PTA4) ≤ 25 dBHL or pure-tone thresholds for all individual tested frequencies for each ear (500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 Hz) ≤ 25 dBHL.Results: We observed a significant inverse relationship between DPOAE amplitudes and stroke risk scores in the pooled cohort and in the subgroups with normal hearing defined by pure tone thresholds. Participants in the high-risk group had significantly lower DPOAE amplitudes than those in the low stroke risk group.Conclusions: Our results indicate that auditory dysfunction as measured by DPOAEs are related to stroke risk. Further prospective studies are needed to determine if DPOAEs could be used as a predictive tool for cardiovascular disease.

Background/aim: Ischemia is insufficient blood flow to provide adequate oxygenation. In the present study, we aimed to show whether acute hypoxia has a critical oxygen value that may lead to the deterioration of cochlear function. Materials and methods: Under general anesthesia, prehypoxic signal-to-noise ratios were determined by distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). The oxygen saturation (SaO2) values of rats were monitored with an oxygen saturation probe. Rats were injected with an extra dose of anesthetic agent, and SaO2 was reduced. DPOAE values in SaO2 100­90, 90­80, 80­70, and 70­60 posthypoxic values were measured and compared statistically with prehypoxic values. Results: At 3000 and 4000 Hz, SaO2 70­60 values measured after the hypoxia were observed to be statistically significantly lower than the values measured before the hypoxia. At 6000 and 8000 Hz, SaO2 80­70 and 70­60 values measured after the hypoxia were observed to be statistically significantly lower than the values measured before the hypoxia. At 10,000 Hz, all of the values measured after the hypoxia were observed to be statistically significantly lower than the values obtained before the hypoxia. Conclusion: Many studies have been conducted on the effects of hypoxia on the inner ear. It remains unclear how fluctuations in DPOAE levels affect hearing in clinical trials when the SaO2 starts to decrease. Although hypoxia has been implicated in the etiology of sudden hearing loss and tinnitus, the effects of acute hypoxia on the cochlea are still uncertain. Further studies are needed on this subject.

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently show the symptoms of oversensitivity to sound (hyperacusis). Although the previous studies have investigated methods for quantifying hyperacusis in ASD, appropriate physiological signs for quantifying hyperacusis in ASD remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the relationship of loudness tolerance with the threshold of the stapedial reflex and with contralateral suppression of the distortion product otoacoustic emissions, which has been suggested to be related to hyperacusis in people without ASD. We tested an ASD group and a neurotypical group. The results revealed that only the stapedial reflex threshold was significantly correlated with loudness tolerance in both groups. In addition to reduced loudness tolerance, people with lower stapedial reflex thresholds also exhibited higher scores on the Social Responsiveness Scale-2.

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether there is any positive or negative correlation between high-frequency distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) values and mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in tinnitus patients. METHODS: The study was performed with 52 volunteers (27 females, 25 males) aged between 35 and 50 years who presented with tinnitus to the otolaryngology outpatient clinic of a tertiary care center. Pure voice audiometric examination, DPOAE measurement, complete blood count values of the study participants were examined. RESULTS: In both ears, a significant and negative correlation was observed between 4000 and 8000 Hz airway and 4000 Hz bone conduction pathways with NLR rates (p < 0.05). A statistically significant relationship was found between the bone conduction pathway PTA and discrimination values for both ears and NLR s (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was detected between NLRs and DPOAE measurements recorded at 4444 Hz, 5000 Hz, 8000 Hz, 8889 Hz, 10,000 Hz and 11,429 Hz frequencies in the right and 4444 Hz, 5000 Hz, 6154 Hz, 8000 Hz, 10,000 Hz and 11,429 Hz frequencies in the left ears, respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that there is a significant correlation between high-frequency pure tone audiometry measurements and high frequency DPOAE measurements and NLR. Further studies are needed to determine the utility of NLR as a marker for the recognition and follow-up of hearing loss in patients with tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the validity of DPOAE screening conducted by village health workers (VHWs) in a rural community. Real-time click evoked tele-auditory brainstem response (tele-ABR) was used as the gold standard to establish validity. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was utilised to compare the results of screening by VHWs to those obtained via tele-ABR. Study samples: One hundred and nineteen subjects (0 to 5 years) were selected randomly from a sample of 2880 infants and young children who received DPOAE screening by VHWs. METHOD: Real time tele-ABR was conducted by using satellite or broadband internet connectivity at the village. An audiologist located at the tertiary care hospital conducted tele-ABR testing through a remote computing paradigm. Tele-ABR was recorded using standard recording parameters recommended for infants and young children. Wave morphology, repeatability and peak latency data were used for ABR analysis. RESULTS: Tele-ABR and DPOAE findings were compared for 197 ears. The sensitivity of DPOAE screening conducted by the VHW was 75%, and specificity was 91%. The negative and positive predictive values were 98.8% and 27.2%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The validity of DPOAE screening conducted by trained VHW was acceptable. This study supports the engagement of grass-root workers in community-based hearing health care provision.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the cost and outcome of a community-based hearing screening programme in which village health workers (VHWs) screened children in their homes using a two-step DPOAE screening protocol. Children referred in a second screening underwent tele diagnostic ABR testing in a mobile tele-van using satellite connectivity or at local centre using broadband internet at the rural location. DESIGN: Economic analysis was carried out to estimate cost incurred and outcome achieved for hearing screening, follow-up diagnostic assessment and identification of hearing loss. Two-way sensitivity analysis determined the most beneficial cost-outcome. STUDY SAMPLE: 1335 children under 5 years of age underwent screening by VHWs. RESULTS: Nineteen of the 22 children referred completed the tele diagnostic evaluation. Five children were identified with hearing loss. The cost-outcomes were better when using broadband internet for tele-diagnostics. The use of least expensive human resources and equipment yielded the lowest cost per child screened (Rs.1526; $23; €21). When follow-up expenses were thus maximised, the cost per child was reduced considerably for diagnostic hearing assessment (Rs.102,065; $1532; €1368) and for the cost per child identified (Rs.388,237; $5826; €5204). CONCLUSION: Settings with constrained resources can benefit from a community-based programme integrated with tele diagnostics.

Mutations of gap junction connexin genes induce a high incidence of nonsyndromic hearing loss. Pannexin genes also encode gap junctional proteins in vertebrates. Recent studies demonstrated that Pannexin-1 (Panx1) deficiency in mice and mutation in humans are also associated with hearing loss. So far, several Panx1 knockout (KO) mouse lines were established. In general, these Panx1 KO mouse lines demonstrate consistent phenotypes in most aspects, including hearing loss. However, a recent study reported that a Panx1 KO mouse line, which was created by Genentech Inc., had no hearing loss as measured by the auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold at low-frequency range (<24 kHz). Here, we used multiple auditory function tests and re-examined hearing function in the Genentech Panx1 (Gen-Panx1) KO mouse. We found that ABR thresholds in the Gen-Panx1 KO mouse were significantly increased, in particular, in the high-frequency region. Moreover, consistent with the increase in ABR threshold, distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and cochlear microphonics (CM), which reflect active cochlear amplification and auditory receptor current, respectively, were significantly reduced. These data demonstrated that the Gen-Panx1 KO mouse has hearing loss and further confirmed that Panx1 deficiency can cause deafness.

Mutations of Connexin 26 (Cx26, GJB2), which is a predominant gap junction isoform in the cochlea, can induce high incidence of nonsyndromic hearing loss. We previously found that targeted-deletion of Cx26 in supporting Deiters cells and outer pillar cells in the cochlea can influence outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility and reduce active cochlear amplification leading to hearing loss, even though there are no gap junction connexin expressions in the auditory sensory hair cells. Here, we further report that hearing loss and the reduction of active amplification in the Cx26 targeted-deletion mice are progressive and different at high and low frequency regions, first occurring in the high frequency region and then progressively extending to the middle and low frequency regions with mouse age increased. The speed of hearing loss extending was fast in the basal high frequency region and slow in the apical low frequency region, showing a logarithmic function with mouse age. Before postnatal day 25, there were no significant hearing loss and the reduction of active cochlear amplification in the low frequency region. Hearing loss and the reduction of active cochlear amplification also had frequency difference, severe and large in the high frequency regions. These new data indicate that the effect of gap junction on active cochlear amplification is progressive, but, consistent with our previous report, exists in both high and low frequency regions in adulthood. These new data also suggest that cochlear gap junctions may have an important role in age-related hearing loss.

The genetic audiogenic seizure hamster (GASH:Sal) is a model of a form of reflex epilepsy that is manifested as generalized tonic-clonic seizures induced by external acoustic stimulation. The morphofunctional alterations in the auditory system of the GASH:Sal that may contribute to seizure susceptibility have not been thoroughly determined. In this study, we analyzed the olivocochlear efferent system of the GASH:Sal from the organ of Corti, including outer and inner hair cells, to the olivocochlear neurons, including shell, lateral, and medial olivocochlear (LOC and MOC) neurons that innervate the cochlear receptor. To achieve this, we carried out a multi-technical approach that combined auditory hearing screenings, scanning electron microscopy, morphometric analysis of labeled LOC and MOC neurons after unilateral Fluoro-Gold injections into the cochlea, and 3D reconstruction of the lateral superior olive (LSO). Our results showed that the GASH:Sal exhibited higher auditory brain response (ABR) thresholds than their controls, as well as absence of distortion-product of otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in a wide range of frequencies. The ABR and DPOAE results also showed differences between the left and right ears, indicating asymmetrical hearing alterations in the GASH:Sal. These alterations in the peripheral auditory activity correlated with morphological alterations. At the cochlear level, the scanning electron microscopy analysis showed marked distortions of the stereocilia from basal to apical cochlear turns in the GASH:Sal, which were not observed in the control hamsters. At the brainstem level, MOC, LOC, and shell neurons had reduced soma areas compared with control animals. This LOC neuron shrinkage contributed to reduction in the LSO volume of the GASH:Sal as shown in the 3D reconstruction analysis. Our study demonstrated that the morphofunctional alterations of the olivocochlear efferent system are innate components of the GASH:Sal, which might contribute to their susceptibility to audiogenic seizures. Hearing impairment is characterized by two potentially coexisting sensorineural components: (i) cochlear gain loss that yields wider auditory filters, elevated hearing thresholds and compression loss, and (ii) cochlear neuropathy, a noise-induced component of hearing loss that may impact temporal coding fidelity of supra-threshold sound. This study uses a psychoacoustic amplitude modulation (AM) detection task in quiet and multiple noise backgrounds to test whether these aspects of hearing loss can be isolated in listeners with normal to mildly impaired hearing ability. Psychoacoustic results were compared to distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) thresholds and envelope-following response (EFR) measures. AM thresholds to pure-tone carriers (4 kHz) in normal-hearing listeners depended on temporal coding fidelity. AM thresholds in hearing-impaired listeners were normal, indicating that reduced cochlear gain may counteract how reduced temporal coding fidelity degrades AM thresholds. The amount with which a 1-octave wide masking noise worsened AM detection was inversely correlated to DPOAE thresholds. The narrowband noise masker was shown to impact the hearing-impaired listeners more so than the normal hearing listeners, suggesting that this masker may be targeting a temporal coding deficit. This study offers a window into how psychoacoustic difference measures can be adopted in the differential diagnostics of hearing deficits in listeners with mixed forms of sensorineural hearing loss.

Attending to a single stimulus in a complex multisensory environment requires the ability to select relevant information while ignoring distracting input. The underlying mechanism and involved neuronal levels of this attentional gain control are still a matter of debate. Here, we investigated the influence of intermodal attention on different levels of auditory processing in humans. It is known that the activity of the cochlear amplifier can be modulated by efferent neurons of the medial olivocochlear complex. We used distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements to monitor cochlear activity during an intermodal cueing paradigm. Simultaneously, central auditory processing was assessed by electroencephalography (EEG) with a steady-state paradigm targeting early cortical responses and analysis of alpha oscillations reflecting higher cognitive control of attentional modulation. We found effects of selective attention at all measured levels of the auditory processing: DPOAE levels differed significantly between periods of visual and auditory attention, showing a reduction during visual attention, but no change during auditory attention. Primary auditory cortex activity, as measured by the auditory steady-state response (ASSR), differed between conditions, with higher ASSRs during auditory than visual attention. Furthermore, the analysis of cortical oscillatory activity revealed increased alpha power over occipitoparietal and frontal regions during auditory compared with visual attention, putatively reflecting suppression of visual processing. In conclusion, this study showed both enhanced processing of attended acoustic stimuli in early sensory cortex and reduced processing of distracting input, both at higher cortical levels and at the most peripheral level of the hearing system, the cochlea.

OBJECTIVE: Betahistine augments cochlear blood flow and is currently used as an efficient therapeutic agent. Amikacin is used in a wide range of areas, but its ototoxic effect continues to be problematic. This study investigates the effect of betahistine on amikacin-induced ototoxicity. METHODS: Thirty-two healthy rats were randomized to 4 groups of 8 rats in each group (amikacin, amikacin+betahistine, betahistine, and no treatment). Amikacin was administered intramuscularly to groups 1 and 2 for 14 days. Betahistine was delivered by oral gavage to groups 2 and 3 for 21 days. Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests were conducted on all rats. RESULTS: There were significant decreases in the DPOAE levels and significant increases in the ABR thresholds of the amikacin and amikacin+betahistine groups on the 7th, 14th, and 21st days, as compared to their basal values. The DPOAE levels of the amikacin+betahistine group significantly decreased on days 7, 14, and 21, and the ABR thresholds significantly increased on the same days, as compared to the amikacin group. CONCLUSION: Our study implies that amikacin's ototoxic effects are augmented by the concurrent use of betahistine. Experimental and clinical research, supported by histopathological studies, is needed to affirm our findings.

In chronic experiments on immature rabbits receiving therapeutic courses of vancomycin, gentamicin, and consecutive administration of vancomicin and gentamicin by the scheme used in neonatology, hearing function was evaluated by the methods of auditory evoked potentials (auditory brainstem response, ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). Comparison with the control group revealed ototoxic effects of all studied antibiotics that manifested in increased sound tolerance and more rapid shortening of latencies in 30-100 dB range. Higher thresholds were found only after gentamicin administration. Vancomycin administration significantly reduced the responses at 4 kHz. Subsequent gentamicin course did not potentiate this effect.
