In elderly patients with cardiac diseases, changes in cardiovascular physiology diminish cardiovascular reserve and predispose to hemodynamic instability after spinal anesthesia; hence, such patients could be at risk of postoperative complications. Additionally, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is used in clinical practice to evaluate cardiovascular hemodynamics. Therefore, we hypothesized that echocardiographic measurements could display significant diagnostic power in the prediction of post - spinal anesthesia hypotension in elderly patients with cardiac diseases and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LV-EF). Therefore, sixty-one elderly orthopedic-trauma patients were recruited. Prior to spinal anesthesia a TTE examination was performed. The LV-EF, the stroke volume index (SVI), the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR), the LV filling pressures (E/Em ratio), the right ventricular function [tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), tricuspid annular systolic velocity (TASV) and fractional area change (FAC)], as well as inferior vena cava (IVC) measurements, such as IVCCI (collapsibility index of the IVC) and dIVCmax (maximum diameter of IVC)-to-IVCCI ratio were assessed. Twenty-six out of sixty-one patients manifested hypotension. Preoperative dIVCmax-to-IVCCI ratio demonstrated the greatest performance amongst echocardiographic indices in predicting post - spinal anesthesia hypotension. The dIVCmax-to-IVCCI ratio < 48 had significantly higher diagnostic power than IVCCI > 0.28, FAC > 42, E/Em ratio < 9 and SVI < 32 (receiver operator characteristic curve analysis). The gray zone for the dIVCmax-to-IVCCI ratio (40-49) showed the lowest number of inconclusive measurements among echocardiographic variables. The preoperative dIVCmax-to-IVCCI ratio could be a reliable echocardiographic index to predict post - spinal anesthesia hypotension in elderly patients with left ventricular dysfunction.

Parenting an offspring is a rewarding, albeit challenging task, often accompanied by high levels of stress. It is important to accurately assess the stress associated with parenting, as severe forms of stress may affect the parent-child dyad and lead to poor child outcomes. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Parental Stress Scale (PSS) in the Greek population. We implemented forward and back translation and conducted a pilot test. A total of 735 mothers (Mage  = 34.6) with infants aged 0-12 months completed the PSS, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The Greek PSS-18 showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .83) and adequate convergent validity. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis revealed two underlying factors: positive aspects of parenting and negative aspects of parenting. Our data confirm the validity of the Greek version of the PSS-18 in mothers with infants aged 0-12 months. The Greek version of the PSS-18 could be a useful tool for professionals and researchers who are interested in perinatal period and the aspects of parenthood.


Criar a un hijo es una tarea gratificante, aunque desafiante, a menudo acompañada por altos niveles de estrés. Es importante evaluar con certeza el estrés asociado con la crianza, ya que formas severas de estrés pudieran afectar la díada progenitor-niño y llevar a pobres resultados en el niño. El propósito de este estudio fue traducir y validar la Escala de Estrés del Progenitor (PSS) en la población griega. Implementamos la traducción hacia adelante y hacia atrás y llevamos a cabo una examinación experimental. Un total de 735 madres (Edad promedio = 34.6) con infantes de edad 0-12 meses completaron la PSS, la Escala de Edimburgo de Depresión Posnatal y la Escala de Ansiedad de Hospital y Depresión. La PSS griega-18 mostró una buena consistencia interna (de Cronbach α = .83) y una validez de convergencia adecuada. Los resultados de los análisis de factores exploratorios y confirmatorios revelaron dos factores subyacentes: aspectos positivos de crianza y aspectos negativos de crianza. Nuestros datos confirman la validez de la versión griega de PSS-18 en madres con infantes de edad 0-12 meses. La versión griega de PSS-18 pudiera ser una herramienta útil para profesionales e investigadores que están interesados en el período perinatal y los aspectos de la maternidad/paternidad.


Le parentage d'un enfant est une tâche gratifiante mais également un défi, souvent accompagnée de niveaux de stress élevés. Il est important d'évaluer avec précision le stress lié au parentage puisque les formes sévères de stress affectent la dyade parent-enfant et mènent à de piètres résultats pour l'enfant. Le but de cette étude était de traduire et de valider l'Echelle de Stress Parental (abrégé en anglais et ici par PSS) chez la population grecque. Nous avons procédé à la traduction et fait un test pilote. Un total de 735 mères (Mâge = 34,6) avec des bébés âgés de 0 à 12 mois ont rempli la PSS, l'Echelle de Dépression Postnatale d'Edinbourg, et l'Echelle d'Anxiété de l'Hôpital et de Dépression. La PSS-18 grecque a fait preuve de bonne cohérence interne (Cronbach's α = .83) et d'une validité convergente adéquate. Les résultats de l'analyse de facteur exploratoire et confirmative ont révélé deux facteurs sous-jacents: les aspects positifs du parentage et les aspects négatifs du parentage. Nos données confirment la validité de la version grecque de la PSS-19 chez des mères avec des bébés âgés de 0 à 12 mois. La version grecque de la PSS-18 pourrait être un outil utile pour les professionnels et les chercheurs qui s'intéressent à la période périnatale et aux aspects du parentage.

Unsaturated fatty acids are found in humans predominantly in the cis configuration. Fatty acids in the trans configuration are primarily the result of human processing (trans fats), but can also be formed endogenously by radical stress. The cis-trans isomerization of fatty acids by free radicals could be connected to several pathologies. Trans fats have been linked to an increased risk of coronary artery disease; however, the reasons for the resulting pathogenesis remain unclear. Here, we investigate the effect of a mono-trans isomer of arachidonic acid (C20:4-5trans, 8cis, 11cis, 14cis) produced by free radicals in physiological concentration on a model erythrocyte membrane using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of two model lipid bilayers containing arachidonic acid and its 5-trans isomer in 3 mol% were carried out for this purpose. The 5-trans isomer formation in the phospholipids was catalyzed by HOCH2CH2S· radicals, generated from the corresponding thiol by γ-irradiation, in multilamellar vesicles of SAPC. Large unilamellar vesicles were made by the extrusion method (LUVET) as a biomimetic model for cis-trans isomerization. Atomic Force Microscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering were used to measure the average size, morphology, and the z-potential of the liposomes. Both results from MD simulations and experiments are in agreement and indicate that the two model membranes display different physicochemical properties in that the bilayers containing the trans fatty acids were more ordered and more rigid than those containing solely the cis arachidonic acid. Correspondingly, the average size of the liposomes containing trans isomers was smaller than the ones without.

Our goal was to delineate the mechanisms of selenite-induced oxidative stress in neonatal rats and investigate the potential of blueberry leaf polyphenols to counteract the induced stress. Vaccinium corymbosum leaf decoction (BLD) was analyzed by UPLC-MS and LC-DAD, along with its in vitro antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging, FRAP, ferrous chelation). Newborn suckling Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: 'Se' and 'SeBLD' received 20 µmol Na2SeO3/kg BW subcutaneously (PN day 10); 'SeBLD' received 100 mg dry BLD/kg BW intraperitoneally (PN11 and 12) and Group 'C' received normal saline. Βiochemical analysis revealed tissue-specific effects of selenite. Brain as a whole was more resistant to selenite toxicity in comparison to liver; midbrain and cerebellum were in general not affected, but cortex was moderately disturbed. Liver lipid peroxidation, GSH, SOD, CAT, GPx were significantly affected, whereas proteolytic activity was not. BLD, which is rich in chlorogenic acid and flavonols (especially quercetin derivatives), exerted significant antioxidant protective effects in all regions. In conclusion, we provide for the first time an insight to the neonatal rat cerebral and liver redox response against a toxic selenite dose and blueberry leaf polyphenols.

Scanning micrο X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) and multispectral imaging (MSI) were applied to study philately stamps, selected for their small size and intricate structures. The µ-XRF measurements were accomplished using the M6 Jetstream Bruker scanner under optimized conditions for spatial resolution, while the MSI measurements were performed employing the XpeCAM-X02 camera. The datasets were acquired asynchronously. Elemental distribution maps can be extracted from the µ-XRF dataset, while chemical distribution maps can be obtained from the analysis of the multispectral dataset. The objective of the present work is the fusion of the datasets from the two spectral imaging modalities. An algorithmic co-registration of the two datasets is applied as a first step, aiming to align the multispectral and µ-XRF images and to adapt to the pixel sizes, as small as a few tens of micrometers. The dataset fusion is accomplished by applying k-means clustering of the multispectral dataset, attributing a representative spectrum to each pixel, and defining the multispectral clusters. Subsequently, the µ-XRF dataset within a specific multispectral cluster is analyzed by evaluating the mean XRF spectrum and performing k-means sub-clustering of the µ-XRF dataset, allowing the differentiation of areas with variable elemental composition within the multispectral cluster. The data fusion approach proves its validity and strength in the context of philately stamps. We demonstrate that the fusion of two spectral imaging modalities enhances their analytical capabilities significantly. The spectral analysis of pixels within clusters can provide more information than analyzing the same pixels as part of the entire dataset.

Microbial spoilage is the main cause of quality deterioration in seafood. Several strains of psychotropic Pseudomonas have been found to dominate in such products, producing a plethora of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Herein, we investigated the growth of and VOC production by seven strains of Pseudomonas associated with spoiled fish after inoculation as single and mixed cultures on model fish substrate and storage at 0, 4 and 8 °C. The results indicated a strain-dependent VOC profile that was also affected by the storage temperature. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) successfully grouped the strains based on VOC profile at each studied temperature, while some potential Chemical Spoilage Indices (CSI) were revealed. The findings of the present work will contribute to the understanding of the metabolic activity of particular strains of Pseudomonas and to reveal any potential CSI for rapid evaluation of fish spoilage/freshness status.

The aim of the present work was to study the microbiota profile of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) fillets stored either aerobically or under Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) conditions at 0, 4, 8 and 12 °C, via 16S rRNA metabarcoding sequencing. Throughout storage, sensory assessment was also applied to estimate fillets' end of shelf-life. Results indicated that storage conditions strongly influenced the shelf-life of the fillets, since the sensorial attributes of air-stored samples deteriorated earlier than that of MAP-stored fillets, while higher temperatures also contributed to a more rapid products' end of shelf-life. Metataxonomic analysis indicated that Pseudomonas was by far the dominant genus at the end of fillet's shelf-life, in the vast majority of treatments, even though a sporadic but noteworthy presence of other genera (e.g, Shewanella, Carnobacterium, Brochothrix etc.) at the middle stages of MAP-stored fillets is also worth mentioning. On the other hand, a completely different profile as well as a more abundant bacterial diversity was observed at the end of shelf-life of MAP-stored fillets at 12 °C, in which Serratia was the most dominant bacterium, followed by Kluyvera, Hafnia, Rahnella and Raoultella, while Pseudomonas was detected in traces. The findings of the present work are very important, providing useful information about the spoilage status of gilthead seabream fillets during several storage conditions, triggering in parallel the need for further studies to enrich the current knowledge and help stakeholders develop innovative strategies that delay the growth of key spoiler players and consequently, retard spoilage course.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of lung cancer, occurring in approximately 5-10% of cases. There are difficulties in the process of surgical treatment of SVC infiltrated by lung tumors but the contribution of technological evolution and innovation is promising. At the same time, the amelioration of survival rates of patients subjected to surgical treatment is equally promising. The reported outcomes of surgical treatment for SVC invasion due to lung tumors vary depending on the extent of the tumor and the patient's overall health status. However, studies clearly suggest that surgical treatment can improve survival and quality of life in selected patients. The literature review showed that the surgical approach to lung cancer invading the SVC constitutes the most indispensable treatment which helps to achieve the long-term survival of patients.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of various hurdles such as aw and pH as well as the storage atmosphere on the microbiological and sensory changes of minimally processed (lightly brined or marinated with acetic or citric acid) European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fillets. The results indicated that the shelf-life of brined fillets stored aerobically was 6 d while that of vacuum and MAP-stored was 12 d, since a reduced growth rate of spoilage bacteria was recorded. The physicochemical characteristics such as aw and water phase salt (WPS) were not considerably changed, while the oxygen levels into the packages ensure the microbiological safety of the product. The fillets marinated with acetic acid exhibited a longer shelf-life at 30 and 40 d under aerobic and reduced oxygen conditions, respectively, while the products marinated with citric acid were at 25 and 35 d respectively. A low pH resulted in reduced or even limited microbial levels, especially for the fillets marinated with acetic acid; something that ensures microbiological safety as well. The low or limited microbial levels in conjugation with the sensory attributes indicated that spoilage may be due to other mechanisms such as autolysis rather than microbial activity. Overall, the present work highlights the potential for further research and development of minimally processed, microbiologically safe and stable with extended shelf-life value added seafood to satisfy the corresponding consumer demands.

Magnetic Fe(2)O(3)/carbon hybrids were prepared in a two-step process. First, acetic acid vapor interacted with iron cations dispersed on the surface of a nanocasted ordered mesoporous carbon (CMK-3). In the second step, the primarily created iron acetate species underwent pyrolysis and transformed to magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopies were used for the chemical and structural characterization of the hybrids, while surface area measurements, thermal analysis, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to determine their physical, surface, and textural properties. These results revealed the preservation of the host carbon structure, which was homogenously and controllably loaded (up to 27 wt %) with nanosized (ca. 20 nm) iron oxides inside the mesoporous system. Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements at low temperatures confirmed the formation of γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles exhibiting superparamagnetic behavior. The kinetic studies showed a rapid removal of Cr(VI) ions from the aqueous solutions in the presence of these magnetic mesoporous hybrids and a considerably increased adsorption capacity per unit mass of sorbent in comparison to that of pristine CMK-3 carbon. The results also indicate highly pH-dependent sorption efficiency of the hybrids, whereas their kinetics was described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Taking into account the simplicity of the synthetic procedure and possibility of magnetic separation of hybrids with immobilized pollutant, the developed mesoporous nanomaterials have quite real potential for applications in water treatment technologies.

The knowledge about the microbial diversity of different olives varieties from diverse regions in the Mediterranean basin is limited. This work aimed to determine the microbial diversity of three different fermented olive varieties, collected from different regions in Cyprus, via Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis. Olives were spontaneously fermented for 120 days, microbial DNA was extracted from the final products, and subjected to 16S rRNA gene and ITS1 loci metabarcoding analysis for the determination of bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. Results revealed that the bacterial profile of the studied varieties was similar, while no noteworthy differences were observed in olives from different regions. The bacterial profile was dominated by the co-existence of Lactobacillus and Streptococcus, while the genera Lactococcus and Salinivibrio and the family Leuconostocaceae were also present in increased relative abundances. Regarding fungal communities, the analysis indicated discrimination among the different varieties, especially in Kalamata ones. The most abundant fungi were mainly the genera Aspergillus, Botryosphaeria, Meyerozyma, and Zygosaccharomyces for Cypriot olives, the genera Botryosphaeria, Saccharomyces, Geosmithia, and Wickeromyces for Kalamata variety, while the dominant fungi in the Picual variety were mainly members of the genera Candida, Penicillium, Saccharomyces, Hanseniospora and Botryosphaeria. Potential microbial biomarkers that distinguish the three varieties are also proposed. Moreover, interaction networks analysis identified interactions among the key taxa of the communities. Overall, the present work provides useful information and sheds light on an understudied field, such as the comparison of microbiota profiles of different varieties from several regions in Cyprus. The study enriches our knowledge and highlights the similarities and the main differences between those aspects, booming in parallel the need for further works on this frontier, in the attempt to determine potentially olives' microbial terroir in Cyprus. Our work should be used as a benchmark for future works in this direction.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry has proven to be a core, non-destructive, analytical technique in cultural heritage studies mainly because of its non-invasive character and ability to rapidly reveal the elemental composition of the analyzed artifacts. Being able to penetrate deeper into matter than the visible light, X-rays allow further analysis that may eventually lead to the extraction of information that pertains to the substrate(s) of an artifact. The recently developed scanning macroscopic X-ray fluorescence method (MA-XRF) allows for the extraction of elemental distribution images. The present work aimed at comparing two different analysis methods for interpreting the large number of XRF spectra collected in the framework of MA-XRF analysis. The measured spectra were analyzed in two ways: a merely spectroscopic approach and an exploratory data analysis approach. The potentialities of the applied methods are showcased on a notable 18th-century Greek religious panel painting. The spectroscopic approach separately analyses each one of the measured spectra and leads to the construction of single-element spatial distribution images (element maps). The statistical data analysis approach leads to the grouping of all spectra into distinct clusters with common features, while afterward dimensionality reduction algorithms help reduce thousands of channels of XRF spectra in an easily perceived dataset of two-dimensional images. The two analytical approaches allow extracting detailed information about the pigments used and paint layer stratigraphy (i.e., painting technique) as well as restoration interventions/state of preservation.

The profiles of bacterial communities and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of farmed red seabream (Pagrus major) from two batches during ice storage were studied using 16S metabarcoding (culture independent approach) and headspace Solid Phase Micro-Extraction-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) analysis, respectively. Sensory attributes and microbiological parameters were also evaluated. At Day 12 (shelf-life for both batches based on sensory evaluation), using classical microbiological analysis, Total Viable Counts (TVC) were found at the levels of 7-8 log cfu/g, and Pseudomonas and/or H2S producing bacteria dominated. On the other hand, the culture independent 16S metabarcoding analysis showed that Psychrobacter were the most abundant bacteria in fish tissue from batch 1, while Pseudomonas and Psychrobacter (at lower abundance) were the most abundant in fish from batch 2. Differences were also observed in VOC profiles between the two batches. However, combining the VOC results of the two batches, 15 compounds were found to present a similar trend during fish storage. Of them, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, 3-methyl-1-butanol, ethanol, 2,4 octadiene (2 isomers), ethyl lactate, acetaldehyde and (E)-2-penten-1-ol could be used as potential spoilage markers of red seabream because they increased during storage, mainly due to Psychrobacter and/or Pseudomonas activity and/or chemical activity (e.g., oxidation). Additionally, VOCs such as propanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, 1-propanol, 3,4-hexanediol and hexane decreased gradually with time, so they could be proposed as freshness markers of red seabream. Such information will be used to develop intelligent approaches for the rapid evaluation of spoilage course in red seabream during ice storage.

Bacterial communities, microbial populations, and antibiotic resistance of potential pathogens in the water and fish (Cyprinus carpio, flesh and gut) from different areas (A1, A2 and A3-A1 was linked with river water, A2 with cattle activity, and A3 with waters of a spring after heavy rains) of Lake Karla (Thessaly, Central Greece) were investigated. The isolated bacteria were identified using Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and were tested for resistance in 21 antibiotics. The microbiota composition of fish flesh was also studied using 16S amplicon-based sequencing Serratia fonticola and several species of Aeromonas (e.g., Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas bestiarium, Aeromonas veronii, etc.) exhibited the highest abundances in all studied samples, while the microbiota profile between the three studied areas was similar, according to the culture-dependent analysis. Of them, S. fonticola was found to be resistant in the majority of the antibiotics for the water and fish (gut and flesh), mainly of the areas A1 and A2. Regarding 16S metabarcoding, the presence of Serratia and Aeromonas at genus level was confirmed, but they found at very lower abundances than those reported using the culture-dependent analysis. Finally, the TVC and the rest of the studied microbiological parameters were found at acceptable levels (4 log cfu/mL or cfu/g and 2-4 log cfu/mL or cfu/g, extremely low levels of E. coli/coliforms) in both water and fish flesh. Based on our findings, the water of Lake Karla would be used for activities such as irrigation, recreation and fishing, however, the development and implementation of a quality management tool for Lake Karla, to ensure environmental hygiene and prevention of zoonosis during the whole year, is imperative.

In the present work, the profiles of bacterial communities of whole and filleted European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), during several storage temperatures (0, 4, 8 and 12 °C) under aerobic and Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) conditions, were examined via the 16S rRNA High-Throughput Sequencing (HTS) approach. Sensorial attributes were also assessed to determine products' shelf-life. Results indicated that shelf-life was strongly dependent on handling, as well as on temperature and atmosphere conditions. HTS revealed the undisputed dominance of Pseudomonas from the very beginning and throughout storage period in the majority of treatments. However, a slightly different microbiota profile was recorded in MAP-stored fillets at the middle stages of storage, which mainly referred to the sporadic appearance of some bacteria (e.g., Carnobacterium, Shewanella, etc.) that followed the dominance of Pseudomonas. It is noticeable that a major difference was observed at the end of shelf-life of MAP-stored fillets at 12 °C, where the dominant microbiota was constituted by the genus Serratia, while the relative abundance of Pseudomonas and Brochothrix was more limited. Furthermore, at the same temperature under aerobic storage of both whole and filleted fish, Pseudomonas almost co-existed with Acinetobacter, while the presence of both Erwinia and Serratia in whole fish was noteworthy. Overall, the present study provides useful information regarding the storage fate and spoilage status of whole and filleted European sea bass, suggesting that different handling and storage conditions influence the shelf-life of sea bass by favoring or delaying the dominance of Specific Spoilage Organisms (SSOs), affecting in parallel to some extent the formation of their consortium that is responsible for products' sensorial deterioration. Such findings enrich the current knowledge and should be used as a benchmark to develop specific strategies aiming to delay spoilage and thus increase the products' added value.

Table olives are among the most well-known fermented foods, being a vital part of the Mediterranean pyramid diet. They constitute a noteworthy economic factor for the producing countries since both their production and consumption are exponentially increasing year by year, worldwide. Despite its significance, olive's processing is still craft based, not changed since antiquity, leading to the production of an unstable final product with potential risk concerns, especially related to deterioration. However, based on industrial needs and market demands for reproducible, safe, and healthy products, the modernization of olive fermentation processing is the most important challenge of the current decade. In this sense, the reduction of sodium content and more importantly the use of suitable starter cultures, exhibiting both technological and potential probiotic features, to drive the process may extremely contribute to this need. Prior, to achieve in this effort, the full understanding of table olive microbial ecology during fermentation, including an in-depth determination of microbiota presence and/or dominance and its functionality (genes responsible for metabolite production) that shape the sensorial characteristics of the final product, is a pre-requisite. The advent of meta-omics technology could provide a thorough study of this complex ecosystem, opening in parallel new insights in the field, such as the concept of microbial terroir. Herein, we provide an updated overview in the field of olive fermentation, pointing out some important challenges/perspectives that could be the key to the olive sector's advancement and modernization.
