RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the differential association between sex and depression, and the possible mediating pathways. METHODS: We analysed survey data from 296 (age 7-17.1 years) cancer survivors from three centres affiliated with Beijing Children's Hospital. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the association between sex and depression. Quantile regression analysis was used to estimate the regression coefficients (ß) and 95% confidence intervals for sex in depression at different quantiles. Mediation analysis with multiple mediators was used to explore the effects of sex on depression. RESULTS: Using linear regression, we found that the age ranged from 8.7 to 10.4 years and the regression coefficient of sex on depression was significant (ß = -2.75, p = 0.03). Quantile regression results showed a significant negative association between sex and depression in the 0.30-0.75 quantiles. Mediation analysis revealed that boys were 1.545 times more depressed than girls, with family resilience, self-perceived burden, and behavioural problems explaining approximately 16.79%, 21.57%, and 43.94% of the sex difference, respectively. The combined effect of family functioning, resilience, social support, self-perceived burden, and behavioural problems might explain the 89.17% sex difference. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should consider sex effects when assessing depression in childhood cancer survivors and target sex-specific interventions for further treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Depression has received a lot of attention as a common and serious illness. However, people are rarely aware of their current depression risk probabilities. We aimed to develop and validate a predictive model applicable to the risk of depression in US adults. METHODS: This study was conducted using the database of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2017-2012). In particular, NHANES (2007-2010) was used as the training cohort (n = 6015) for prediction model construction and NHANES (2011-2012) was used as the validation cohort (n = 2812) to test the model. Depression was assessed (defined as a binary variable) by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Socio-demographic characteristics, sleep time, illicit drug use and anxious days were assessed using a self-report questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate independent risk factors for depression. The nomogram has the advantage of being able to visualize complex statistical prediction models as risk estimates of individualized disease probabilities. Then, we developed two depression risk nomograms based on the results of logistic regression. Finally, several validation methods were used to evaluate the prediction performance of nomograms. RESULTS: The predictors of model 1 included gender, age, income, education, marital status, sleep time and illicit drug use, and model 2, furthermore, included anxious days. Both model 1 and model 2 showed good discrimination ability, with a bootstrap-corrected C index of 0.71 (95% CI, 0.69-0.73) and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.83-0.86), and an externally validated C index of 0.71 (95% CI, 0.68-0.74) and 0.83 (95% CI, 0.81-0.86), respectively, and had well-fitted calibration curves. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of the models with 1000 different weighted random sampling and depression scores of 10-17 threshold range were higher than 0.7 and 0.8, respectively. Calculated net reclassification improvement (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) showed the discrimination or accuracy of the prediction models. Decision curve analysis (DCA) demonstrated that the depression models were practically useful. The network calculators work for participants to make personalized predictions. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents two prediction models of depression, which can effectively and accurately predict the probability of depression as well as helping the U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population to make optimal treatment decisions.

RESUMO

The grape berries of two varieties, Yan73 (Vitis vinifera L.) and Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) (Vitis vinifera L.) were treated with 0.40 mg/L 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), 1.00 mg/L brassinazole (Brz), and deionized water (control), at the veraison period. The EBR treatment significantly increased total phenolic content (TPC), total tannin content (TTC) and total anthocyanin content (TAC) of Yan73 and CS wines, whereas Brz treatment decreased TPC, total flavonoid content (TFC), TAC in the two wines. Moreover, the content of most of the phenolic compounds identified by HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS in EBR-treated wines was significantly higher than that in control. The antioxidant capacities, which determined using DPPH, ABTS and HRSA methods, of the wines were increased by EBR treatment as well. There was a good correlation between the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content. The results demonstrated that EBR could enhance the phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity of Yan73 and CS wines, but the effects may vary by different cultivars.

RESUMO

Yan73 is a 'teinturier' red wine variety cultivated in China and widely used in winemaking to strengthen red wine colour. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) applied to the grapevine cluster on the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content of the wine made from Yan73. Two hundred mg/l ABA was applied on Yan73 grapevine cluster during veraison. As they mature, these ABA-treated and untreated grape berries were transformed into wines, respectively, and the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of these wines were compared. The results showed that phenolic content (total phenolics, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins) and antioxidant capacity were higher in the wine produced with ABA-treated Yan73 grapes than those in the wine from untreated grapes. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon wine, Yan73 wine had higher phenolic content and stronger antioxidant capacity. These strongly suggest that exogenously applied ABA to Yan73 grapes can enhance phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of its wine, and Yan73 wine has the higher utilization value and potential for development.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to investigate brain metabolic changes in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) using multivoxel proton MR spectroscopy ((1)H-MVS). METHODS: Fourteen aMCI patients and fifteen healthy control subjects participated in this experiment. All MR measurements were acquired using a 1.5-T GE scanner. (1)H-MVS point resolved spectroscopy (2D PROBE-CSI PRESS) pulse sequence (TE = 35 ms; TR = 1,500 ms; phase × frequency, 18 × 18) was used for acquiring MRS data. All data were post-processed using Spectroscopy Analysis by General Electric software and linear combination of model (LCModel). The absolute concentrations of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), myoinositol (MI), creatine (Cr), and the metabolite ratios of NAA/Cr, Cho/Cr, MI/Cr, and NAA/MI were measured bilaterally in the posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG), inferior precuneus (Pr), paratrigonal white matter (PWM), dorsal thalamus (DT), and lentiform nucleus (LN). RESULTS: Patients with aMCI displayed significantly lower NAA levels in the bilateral PCG (p < 0.01), PWM (p < 0.05), and left inferior Pr (p < 0.05). The metabolite ratio of NAA/MI was decreased in the bilateral PCG (p < 0.01) and PWM (p < 0.05) and in the left DT (p < 0.01). NAA/Cr was decreased in the left PCG (p < 0.01), DT (p < 0.05), right PWM (p < 0.05), and LN (p < 0.05). However, MI/Cr was elevated in the right PCG (p < 0.01) and left PWM (p < 0.05). Significantly increased Cho level was also evident in the left PWM (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our observations of decreased NAA, NAA/Cr, and NAA/MI, in parallel with increased Cho and MI/Cr might be characteristic of aMCI patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preoperative localization of small size pulmonary nodules is challenging, but it is necessary for surgical resection of early lung cancer. As a new device for preoperative localization, the 4-hook-anchor coaxial needle with scaled suture was tentatively applied in our department to improve the effect of preoperative localization. However, double spring coil, as a proven positioning technology, used to be our preferred method in the past. We did a retrospective single-centre research driven by the interest on which one should be the first choice for preoperative localization among these two approaches. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis on 100 patients undergoing surgery with the new coaxial needle from 2019 to 2020, and 98 patients undergoing double spring coil from 2017 to 2019. The duration of localization, success rate, operation time, intraoperative bleeding, and positioning-related complications of these two groups of patients were examined in this study. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups of patients in terms of the success rate. However, the new coaxial needle seemed to be able to shorten the duration of preparative localization and operation time by accelerating the efficiency of exploring small nodules intraoperatively, and also decreased the risk of positioning-related pneumothorax and pulmonary hemorrhage. The logistic analysis indicated that the puncture depth was an independent risk factor for overall complications. Meanwhile, previous lung diseases and positioning time were independent risk factors for pneumothorax, besides pneumorrhagia and depth of penetration as well. CONCLUSIONS: The new coaxial needle can save time for both radiologists and thoracic surgeons, while reducing the risk of positioning-related complications. We support its application clinically instead of the double spring coil.

RESUMO

The integrated sulfur- and Fe0-based autotrophic denitrification process in an anoxic fluidized-bed membrane bioreactor (AnFB-MBR) was developed for the nitrate-contaminated water treatment in order to control sulfate generation and avoid alkalinity supplement. The nitrate removal rate of the AnFB-MBR reached 1.22 g NO3--N L-1d-1 with NO3--N ranging 40-200 mg L-1 at hydraulic retention times of 1.0-5.0 h. The denitrification in the integrated system was simultaneously carried out by sulfur- and Fe0-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifiers. The effluent sulfate generation was decreased by 29.3-70.3% and 31.2-50.9% due to the functional role of Fe0-based denitrification in the integrated system. Alkalinity produced by Fe0-oxidizing autotrophic denitrification could compensate for the alkalinity consumption by sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification. The sulfur- and Fe0-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifying bacterial consortium was composed mainly of bacteria from Thiobacillus, Sulfurimonas, and Geothrix genera. The integrated modes leads to a harmonious co-existence of sulfur- and Fe0-oxidizing denitrifying microbes, which may make a difference to the functional performance of the bioreactor. Overall, the integrated sulfur- and Fe0-based autotrophic denitrification could overcome the shortcomings of excess sulfate generation and external alkalinity supplementation compared to the sole sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification, indicating further potential for the technology in practice.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of application of exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on the antioxidant capacity, anthocyanins and phenolics content of Vitis vinifera grape berry (cvs. Yan 73 and Cabernet Sauvignon). The grapevine clusters were sprayed with 0 (control), 0.10, 0.40, or 0.80 mg/l of 24-epibrassinolide during veraison, respectively. The EBR application increased the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and UDP-glucose: flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase (UFGT), the content of total phenolics, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins, individual anthocyanins and the antioxidant capacity of matured grape skins in both varieties. The application also increased the content of flavonoids and anthocyanins in Yan73 pulp. Compared to the other treatments, the treatment of EBR at 0.40 mg/l had significantly higher level than the control in all above assays. Our results indicated that the exogenous EBR treatment can significantly promote grape ripening and enhance anthocyanins and other phenolics contents and antioxidant capacity in the grape skin.
