RESUMO

Calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) are essential in liver transplantation (LT); however, their long-term use leads to various adverse effects. The anti-intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 monoclonal antibody MD3 is a potential alternative to CNI. Despite its promising results with short-term therapy, overcoming the challenge of chronic rejection remains important. Thus, we aimed to investigate the outcomes of long-term MD3 therapy with monthly MD3 monomaintenance in nonhuman primate LT models. Rhesus macaques underwent major histocompatibility complex-mismatched allogeneic LT. The conventional immunosuppression group (Con-IS, n = 4) received steroid, tacrolimus, and sirolimus by 4 months posttransplantation. The induction MD3 group (IN-MD3, n = 5) received short-term MD3 therapy for 3 months with Con-IS. The maintenance MD3 group (MA-MD3, n = 4) received MD3 for 3 months, monthly doses by 2 years, and then quarterly. The MA-MD3 group exhibited stable liver function without overt infection and had significantly better liver allograft survival than the IN-MD3 group. Development of donor-specific antibody and chronic rejection were suppressed in the MA-MD3 group but not in the IN-MD3 group. Donor-specific T cell responses were attenuated in the MA-MD3 group. In conclusion, MD3 monomaintenance therapy without maintenance CNI provides long-term liver allograft survival by suppressing chronic rejection, offering a potential breakthrough for future human trials.

BACKGROUND: Human fishing activities have significantly affect environmental concern for marine ecosystems, conservation of marine mammals, and human health. Coastal cetaceans are highly vulnerable to ingestion of fishing gear, bycatching, or entanglement, all of which can be fatal for these animals. In particular, certain coastal dolphins and porpoises are heavily impacted by fishing gear such as angling gear or stownet, as their food often overlap with the target fish species of human fisheries. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a case of an Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) beached on the coast of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, with ingestion of fishing gear and severe Anisakis infection. Although this species inhabits waters ranging from the Persian Gulf to Taiwan, several stranded carcasses have been reported on Jeju Island in recent years. Post-mortem computed tomography revealed a bundle of four fishing hooks in the forestomach, along with nylon lines and steel lines with connectors, which were assumed to be angling gear for Jeju hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus). Further necroscopic investigation revealed that the forestomach contained a large number of Anisakis spp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae). Histological examination revealed a thickened forestomach wall with pinpoint and volcanic ulcerations, a thickened layer of stratified squamous epithelium, and infiltrated stroma in the squamous epithelium. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes the urgent need to address the impact of fishing activities on marine mammals, marine litter pollution, and the bycatch problem in Korean seawater. In addition, the occurrence of N. phocaenoides in seawater around Jeju Island should be raised in future geographical ecology or veterinary pathology studies and when its distribution is updated.

ABSTRACT: Epidermal cysts are among the most common benign subcutaneous tumors. However, malignant transformation of benign epidermal cysts into squamous carcinomas has been reported. Owing to its low incidence rate, the clinical and pathological features of this condition are not well understood. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and pathological characteristics of the malignant transformation of epidermal cysts, which could suggest an appropriate treatment strategy. We conducted a retrospective study of 9 patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma arising from epidermal cysts. All patients underwent surgical excision, and clinical information regarding patient demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment, and outcomes was analyzed. The average age at diagnosis was 57.3 years, with an average latency period of 15.4 years. Five patients had undergone prior cyst excision or drainage, with an average of 2.3 episodes of recurrence. Surgical excision was the primary treatment in all cases, and 2 patients with margin involvement at the final pathology underwent re-excision with additional resection margins. No recurrence was observed during the follow-up period. Four patients had immune dysregulation due to an underlying chronic kidney disease or cancer. Our study emphasizes the need for increased awareness of squamous cell carcinoma arising from epidermal cysts in patients with a history of cyst existence or recurrence, especially those with immune deficiencies. We expect these findings to contribute to early suspicion of malignant transformation and guide adequate clinical decision-making.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the antibacterial and wound healing efficacies of chitosan hydrogel with povidone-iodine (PI) hydrogel. METHODS: The in vitro antibacterial activities of chitosan and PI hydrogels against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were evaluated. Nine 6- to 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into plain, PI, and chitosan hydrogel groups. Each rat received two 10-mm full-thickness dorsal wounds using an excisional splinting model. Each wound was treated with 0.2 mL of gel thrice over the course of 3 postoperative weeks. Weekly observations were conducted, and at the end of the third postoperative week, the rats were killed for histopathological and quantitative polymerase chain reaction evaluations. Data analysis included both 2- and 1-way analyses of variance. RESULTS: Chitosan hydrogel exhibited comparable in vitro antibacterial activity and a significantly enhanced in vivo wound closure rate compared with PI hydrogel. Three weeks after the surgery, the chitosan hydrogel group demonstrated marked differences in wound repair (P < 0.01). Histologically, increased collagen deposition was observed with chitosan hydrogel treatment. Immunohistochemistry for CD68 revealed a lower number of macrophages in the wounds treated with chitosan hydrogel. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis indicated a superior collagen 1 to 3 ratio and reduced expression of proinflammatory cytokine mRNAs (interleukin 1b, interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor α, and interferon γ) in the chitosan hydrogel group. CONCLUSION: Chitosan hydrogel demonstrates the potential to serve as an effective alternative to PI hydrogel, providing enhanced wound healing capabilities while maintaining comparable antimicrobial properties.

AIMS: Diabetic foot ulcer is a major complication of diabetes mellitus and amputation is often needed. Since mortality rate after amputation is comparatively high, saving diabetic foot is required not only for preserving function and life quality, but also for decreasing mortality rate. This study was designed to analyse experience of limb salvage in patients with diabetic foot using free flaps from the lateral thoracic region over a 10-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2009 and 2018, 297 cases of diabetic foot underwent surgical procedures. We analysed the 83 cases who underwent free flap from lateral thoracic region. Patient data were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 83 patients, 56 of them males, were included in this study. Age of patients ranged from 27 to 80 years. Twenty patients underwent percutaneous transluminal angioplasty procedures. The latissimus dorsi muscle sparing technique was used in 7 cases. A thoracodorsal artery perforator flap was used in 68 cases. A thoracodorsal artery perforator chimaeric flap was performed in 8 cases. The flap survival rate was 98.8% and the limb salvage rate was 96.4%. The mean follow-up was 6.5 years. During follow-up 14 patients suffered recurrence of foot ulcers. CONCLUSIONS: Ten-year experience of using flaps from the lateral thoracic region revealed superior outcomes in terms of flap survival and limb saving compared to those in a recent meta-analysis and other reports. Long vascular pedicle technique and the chimaeric technique might be the alternative methods for multiple or vascular insufficient diabetic foot defects.

The endangered whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish on Earth and a long-lived member of the ancient Elasmobranchii clade. To characterize the relationship between genome features and biological traits, we sequenced and assembled the genome of the whale shark and compared its genomic and physiological features to those of 83 animals and yeast. We examined the scaling relationships between body size, temperature, metabolic rates, and genomic features and found both general correlations across the animal kingdom and features specific to the whale shark genome. Among animals, increased lifespan is positively correlated to body size and metabolic rate. Several genomic traits also significantly correlated with body size, including intron and gene length. Our large-scale comparative genomic analysis uncovered general features of metazoan genome architecture: Guanine and cytosine (GC) content and codon adaptation index are negatively correlated, and neural connectivity genes are longer than average genes in most genomes. Focusing on the whale shark genome, we identified multiple features that significantly correlate with lifespan. Among these were very long gene length, due to introns being highly enriched in repetitive elements such as CR1-like long interspersed nuclear elements, and considerably longer neural genes of several types, including connectivity, activity, and neurodegeneration genes. The whale shark genome also has the second slowest evolutionary rate observed in vertebrates to date. Our comparative genomics approach uncovered multiple genetic features associated with body size, metabolic rate, and lifespan and showed that the whale shark is a promising model for studies of neural architecture and lifespan.

BACKGROUND: A biological injectable material, paste-type micronized acellular dermal matrix (ADM), has been proven effective in wound healing by filling defects through tissue replacement. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of paste-type micronized ADM on soft tissue augmentation with that of the conventional fillers in animal experiments. METHODS: Two distinct paste-type micronized ADMs, which were mixed with distilled water (mADM) and gelatin (mADM+GEL), respectively, were compared with conventional fillers, hyaluronic acid (HA) and polymethyl methacrylate (COL+PMMA). Thus, four different types of fillers were each injected into the dorsum of nude mice to compare the volume retention and biocompatibility. During the 8-week experimental period, ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) images were obtained for volumetric analysis. Histological evaluation was performed using hematoxylin and eosin and CD 31 staining. RESULTS: According to the CT images at week 8, the mADM and mADM+GEL showed a higher volume persistence rate of 113.54% and 51.12%, compared with 85.09% and 17.65% for HA and COL+PMMA, respectively. The 2-week interval ultrasound images revealed that the mADM showed a volume increase in width rather than in height, and an increase in height for HA did not vary much. Histological analysis showed marked fibrous invasion and neovascularization with the mADM and mADM+GEL compared to that of the conventional fillers. CONCLUSIONS: Paste-type micronized ADM showed soft tissue augmentation with similar effectiveness to that of conventional fillers. Therefore, paste-type micronized ADM has potential as an alternative material for a soft tissue filler in tissue replacement. Canine mammary gland tumor (CMT) is the most frequently diagnosed neoplasm in intact female dogs. As prognosis depends on the malignancy of tumors and metastasis levels, early and accurate diagnosis are crucial for prolongation of life expectancy. The genetic similarity of dogs with humans in addition to environmental and physiological similarities make them ideal models for the study of cancer. In this study, we analyzed differentially expressed microRNAs followed by RNA-Seq to investigate the alterations in mRNA levels based on the malignancy (benign, malignant) and the biopsy locations (tumors, surrounding normal tissues). We identified multiple breast cancer-related genes regardless of malignancy. We found cfa-miR-503 to be the only miRNA that showed altered expression in response to malignancy in CMTs. Although further validation is needed, cfa-miR-503 could be used as a potential diagnostic biomarker as well as a potential RNA-based anti-tumor drug in malignant CMTs.

The present case report aims to outline the post-mortem findings of an East Asian finless porpoise with upper aerodigestive tract obstruction using different post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) visualization techniques and discusses the potential cause of death of this individual. A dead-stranded adult male East Asian finless porpoise was recovered from the Northern coast of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The carcass was frozen in Jeju National University within 2 h upon first reported. The PMCT examinations were performed at 120 kVp, 200 mAs with a section thickness of 1 mm. The scan field of view (sFOV) was set to 400 mm. Four image rendering techniques, including multi-planar reconstruction, three-dimensional volume rendering, perspective volume rendering, and minimum intensity projection technique, were used to aid the diagnosis of upper aerodigestive tract obstruction in the stranded finless porpoise. Conventional necropsy was performed to provide a complete necropsy report. Using PMCT, a Sebastidae of 24 cm measured length was found to be lodged in the left pharyngeal food channel and esophagus of the finless porpoise. Hard rays of the pectoral fin of the lodged fish have impaled the esophageal mucosa. Fishing gear was found to embed at the dorsal side of the lodged fish. The trachea was compressed ventrally and the arytenoepiglottic tube opening has been narrowed, which may precipitate to the finless porpoise difficult breathing. Pulmonary hyperinflation, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, pneumopericardium, and pneumorrhachis were observed. This case report represents the first documentation of potential radiological indicators of upper aerodigestive tract obstruction in the East Asian finless porpoise using PMCT. Spatial location of the lodged item could be rendered in situ as the time of death. It has demonstrated that PMCT could provide objective measurements to adjunct the necropsy findings in diagnosis of fatal aerodigestive tract obstruction in stranded cetaceans.

In the aquaculture industry, an efficient and safe water purification system is important to prevent mass mortality by virulent pathogens. As extensive use of traditional methods (e.g.: povidone-iodine, ozone, ultraviolet irradiation, formalin, and chlorine dioxide) have adverse effects on cultured fish, an appropriate and alternative water purification method is vital for the sustainability of the industry. Non-thermal plasma technology has been successfully used for various biomedical purposes (e.g: food sterilization, medical device disinfection, wound healing, cancer therapy, etc.) and has great potential to be used as a sterilizing system. However, few studies have been conducted on its usefulness in the aquaculture industry. In this study, we investigated the bactericidal efficacy of plasma-activated water induced by non-thermal plasma and its histopathological as well as immunological adverse effects on koi. A highly virulent Aeromonas hydrophila SNU HS7, which caused massive mortality of koi, was used for this study. Non-thermal plasma was applied for 10 min to the fish tanks with 1.2 × 109 CFU/mL SNU HS7 using PLMB-20 system to confirm the sterilization efficacy and to observe the survival and immunological reaction of koi for 14 days. As a result, gross pathological, histopathological, and immunological investigations did not reveal any significant adverse effects in fish as compared to the control groups. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing that non-thermal plasma can be used for sterilization of rearing water without giving significant physiological damage to the fish, even under the assumption of extreme situations. As plasma can effectively sterilize not only bacteria but also other unknown pathogens, the results of this study are showing a promising future in purifying water in aquaculture practice.

Salmonellosis is a disease of critical concern for public health, and the use of bacteriophages is among the most promising approaches to combating Salmonella. As Salmonella has various serotypes and strains, and bacteriophages are virulent to specific hosts, it is important to isolate phages and evaluate interactions with their hosts. In the present study, a novel Salmonella-infecting bacteriophage, pSal-SNUABM-01, was isolated and characterized. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the bacteriophage is a member of the family Podoviridae and possesses an elongated head and a short tail. The phage genome is circular and 89,500 bp in size. A total of 162 open reading frames were predicted, eight of which were tRNAs. Morphological and genomic analysis revealed that pSal-SNUABM-01 is closely related to phage 7-11. In phylogenetic analysis, pSal-SNUABM-01 and 7-11 did not cluster together with the members of any established genus, suggesting that these two phages comprise a novel genus. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the phylogeny of the family Podoviridae and might be applicable to the development of bacteriophage treatments against Salmonella infections.

With the growing demand for caviar products, sturgeon (family Acipenseridae) have become some of the most popular species in the aquaculture industry. Since sturgeon need more than 10 years to become sexually mature, protection against fatal diseases becomes particularly important in the industry. In March 2018, approximately 10% of Siberian Sturgeon Acipenser baerii fingerlings in a sturgeon hatchery in Jeolla Province, Republic of Korea, exhibited anorexia, abdominal distension, buoyancy loss, and abnormal behavior and eventually showed a 90% fatality rate. Twenty moribund fish were necropsied, and a distended stomach filled with gas was found in every case. A single colony dominated the intestinal lumen smear and was identified as Candida manassasensis by polymerase chain reaction targeting 18S ribosomal RNA. The same microorganism was also detected in the sturgeons' feed. Antifungal resistance was examined using the VITEK 2 system, and the isolate was susceptible to voriconazole, caspofungin, micafungin, and flucytosine. The environmental stress factor for this case was speculated as decreased water temperature. Since similar cases have been observed for many years, further research to optimize precise treatment and prevention methods is required.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged as a serious problem; bacteriophages have, therefore, been proposed as a therapeutic alternative to antibiotics. Several authorities, such as pharmacopeia, FDA, have confirmed their safety, and some bacteriophages are commercially available worldwide. The demand for bacteriophages is expected to increase exponentially in the future; hence, there is an urgent need to mass-produce bacteriophages economically. Unlike the replication of non-lytic bacteriophages, lytic bacteriophages are replicated by lysing host bacteria, which leads to the termination of phage production; hence, strategies that can prolong the lysis of host bacteria in bacteria-bacteriophage co-cultures, are required. RESULTS: In the current study, we manipulated the inoculum concentrations of Staphylococcus aureus and phage pSa-3 (multiplicity of infection, MOI), and their energy sources to delay the bactericidal effect while optimizing phage production. We examined an increasing range of bacterial inoculum concentration (2 × 108 to 2 × 109 CFU/mL) to decrease the lag phase, in combination with a decreasing range of phage inoculum (from MOI 0.01 to 0.00000001) to delay the lysis of the host. Bacterial concentration of 2 × 108 CFU/mL and phage MOI of 0.0001 showed the maximum final phage production rate (1.68 × 1010 plaque forming unit (PFU)/mL). With this combination of phage-bacteria inoculum, we selected glycerol, glycine, and calcium as carbon, nitrogen, and divalent ion sources, respectively, for phage production. After optimization using response surface methodology, the final concentration of the lytic Staphylococcus phage was 8.63 × 1010 ± 9.71 × 109 PFU/mL (5.13-fold increase). CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, Staphylococcus phage pSa-3 production can be maximized by increasing the bacterial inoculum and reducing the seeding phage MOI, and this combinatorial strategy could decrease the phage production time. Further, we suggest that response surface methodology has the potential for optimizing the mass production of lytic bacteriophages.

Curcumin exhibited numerous key activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulatory effects in fish. This study evaluated the protective effects of curcumin (CUR) against lead (Pb)-induced toxicities in fish. Healthy Cyprinus carpio L. individuals were segregated into control, Pb only, Pb+CUR, and CUR only groups. Pb groups were exposed to 1 mg L -1 of Pb, and CUR groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with 15 g kg-1 of CUR. After eight weeks, growth performance, Pb accumulation in tissues, various haemato-biochemical parameters, immune responses, and cytokine gene expression were measured. Dietary CUR effectively decreased Pb accumulation in tissues and increased the survival of Pb-exposed fish. Co-treatment with Pb and CUR reversed alterations in haemato-biochemical parameters, ameliorated Pb-induced oxidative stress, enhanced immune responses, and restored intestinal enzymatic activities. Dietary CUR reversed changes in intestinal microbiota in Pb-exposed fish. Pb-induced upregulation of NF-κBp65 and HSP70 was inhibited by dietary CUR. CUR supplementation upregulated the mRNA levels of SOD, Nrf2, IL-10, and CYP450 1A and attenuated Pb-induced degradation of I κB-α mRNA levels. Overall, CUR antagonizes Pb-induced negative impacts in fish. Thus, dietary CUR had several beneficial effects on immune responses, decreased Pb accumulation in tissues, and reversed Pb-induced oxidative stress in fish. Therefore, CUR plays a protective role in Pb-induced immune toxicity in fish, and, as such, may be suitable as an aqua feed additive for use in carp aquaculture.

AIMS: Postoperative tendon adhesions contribute to functional disability and reconstructive failure. In this study, we present the long-term outcomes of a prospective study in which acellular dermal matrix (ADM) was used to prevent postoperative adhesion after tendon injury. METHODS: The study was conducted between March 2014 and February 2017. Patients, aged 19-65 years, with an acute single flexor tendon injury in zones 1 or 2, distal to the palmar digital crease were candidates for the study. Patients were allocated to either an ADM treatment group or a control group without ADM treatment. RESULTS: A total of 37 patients were enrolled in the study: 21 patients in the ADM group and 16 patients in the control group. At six months after surgery, the range of motion in the proximal interphalangeal joint was 81.0±5.1 degrees in the ADM group and 75.8±6.9 degrees in the control group. The range of motion in the distal interphalangeal joint was 79.9±7.1 in the ADM group and 71.2±5.7 degrees in the control group, with significant difference (p=0.03 and p<0.05, respectively). In addition, the total active motion was higher in the ADM group than in the control group. The patients' scores on the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire were also significantly different, with higher satisfaction scores in the ADM group (p=0.02). The minimal follow-up period was six months. CONCLUSION: The use of ADM after tendon repair has the potential to significantly improve the outcome of tendon surgery in terms of range of motion. OBJECTIVE: The extracellular matrix (ECM) is one of the most important elements in wound healing. Absence or dysfunction of the ECM may impair wound healing. The application of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as a substitute for ECM has been suggested. This study investigated the clinical application and wound healing effects of a paste-type ADM in patients presenting with hard-to-heal wounds due to various causes. METHOD: Patients with a hard-to-heal wound for >1 month, from September 2017 to February 2019, were included in this study. After debridement, the paste-type ADM was applied, at zero (baseline), two and four weeks. After application of the paste-type ADM, a conventional dressing was applied using polyurethane foam. Wound size, the formation of granulation tissue, re-epithelialisation, complete healing and adverse events were recorded at zero (baseline), one, two, four, eight and 12 weeks after the initial treatment. RESULTS: A total of 18 patients took part (eight male, 10 female, mean age of 56±16.16 years). The mean wound area decreased from 17.42±10.04cm2 to 12.73±7.60cm2 by week one (p<0.05), to 10.16±7.00 by week two (p<0.0005), to 5.56±5.25 by week four (p<0.0001), to 2.77±5.15 by week eight (p<0.0001) and to 2.07±4.78 by week 12 (p<0.0001). The number of patients with >75% re-epithelialisation increased from two (11.1%) at two weeks to five (27.8%) at four weeks, to 11 (61.1%) at eight weeks and to 13 (72.2%) at 12 weeks. The number of patients showing complete wound healing was two (11.1%) at four weeks, nine (50.0%) at eight weeks and 12 (66.7%) at 12 weeks. No adverse events were reported during treatment. CONCLUSION: The paste-type ADM used in this study is a viable option for facilitating wound healing; it can shorten hospitalisation, and promote a faster recovery and return to normal life activities.

The anti-inflammatory activity of the guava leaf extracts (GLE) against LPS-induced inflammatory responses in fish macrophage cell lines is well documented. Here, we evaluated the effects of dietary GLE on LPS-induced oxidative stress, immune responses, and glucocorticoid receptor-related gene expression in Cyprinus carpio. Basal diet was supplemented with 0 (control), 100, 150, 200, or 250 mg kg-1 GLE for eight weeks. Highest (p < 0.05) weight gain rate was obtained in fish group supplemented with 200 mg kg-1 of GLE. The results showed that superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, lysozyme, and complement C3 decreased, while malondialdehyde level increased in the liver and spleen upon LPS-challenge. Dietary GLE supplementation (especially 200 or 250 mg kg-1) alleviated LPS-induced changes. Similarly, GLE (150-250 mg kg-1) reversed LPS-induced alteration of serum biochemical parameters such as alkaline phosphatase, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, and myeloperoxidase. LPS treatment markedly induced increased the mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and NF-κB p65 in both the liver and kidney tissues; however, GLE pre-treatment attenuated LPS-induced elicitation of TNF-α, IL-ß, and NF-κB p65. Moreover, dietary GLE supplementation significantly increased the expression of HSP70 and HSP90, and glucocorticoid receptor in the liver and kidney after LPS challenge. Thus, GLE attenuated LPS-induced inflammation response by up-regulating glucocorticoid receptor-related gene expression in carp. Finally, GLE supplementation reduced carp mortality after LPS-challenge. These results suggest that dietary supplementation with 200 mg kg-1 GLE is adequate for effectively attenuating LPS-induced oxidative stress and immune-suppressive effects in C. carpio.

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a novel route of administration for vaccinating fish against Aeromonas hydrophila infection using a dissolving microneedles (MNs) patch. The A. hydrophila JUNAH strain was inactivated with formalin and used as a vaccine antigen. It was mixed with dissolvable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the matrix material to produce the MNs patches. When examined with a scanning electron microscope, each patch has 282 uniformly distributed, pyramid-shaped needles on a circular base. In the skin insertion experiment, the MNs patches were confirmed to be capable of penetrating the skin of the fish. Through agglutination assay and analysis of non-specific parameters like lysozyme and superoxide dismutase, it was verified that the antigen embedded into the patch induced adaptive and innate immune responses in the fish. In the challenge experiment, the group inoculated with the MNs patch and the group injected with formalin killed cells (FKC) showed a similar survival rate. Our results suggest that the FKC-loaded MNs patch is a wholly viable method alternative to injection for the vaccination of fish.

RESUMO

A bacteriophage infecting Edwardsiella tarda (named pEt-SU) was isolated from freshwater collected in Chung-ju, South Korea. The whole genome of pEt-SU was 276,734 bp in length, representing the first giant phage infecting Edwardsiella reported to date. A total of 284 putative open reading frames were predicted and annotated. Morphology and genome analyses verified that pEt-SU may be distantly related to the phiKZ-like phages, a well-known giant myovirus. The findings in this study provide new insights into the phages infecting E. tarda ads well as fundamental data for the study of giant phages.

Microbial surfactants (biosurfactants) are a broad category of surface-active biomolecules with multifunctional properties. They self-assemble in aqueous solutions and are adsorbed on various interfaces, causing a decrease in surface tension, as well as interfacial tension, solubilization of hydrophobic compounds, and low critical micellization concentrations. Microbial biosurfactants have been investigated and applied in several fields, including bioremediation, biodegradation, food industry, and cosmetics. Biosurfactants also exhibit anti-microbial, anti-biofilm, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and immunomodulatory activities. Recently, it has been reported that biosurfactants can increase the immune responses and disease resistance of fish. Among various microbial surfactants, lipopeptides, glycolipids, and phospholipids are predominantly investigated. This review presents the various immunological activities of biosurfactants, mainly glycolipids and lipopeptides. The applications of biosurfactants in aquaculture, as well as their immunomodulatory activities, that make them novel therapeutic candidates have been also discussed in this review.
