RESUMO

Organic phosphors offer a promising alternative in optoelectronics, but their temperature-sensitive feature has restricted their applications in high-temperature scenarios, and the attainment of high-temperature phosphorescence (HTP) is still challenging. Herein, a series of organic cocrystal phosphors are constructed by supramolecular assembly with an ultralong emission lifetime of up to 2.16 s. Intriguingly, remarkable stabilization of triplet excitons can also be realized at elevated temperature, and green phosphorescence is still exhibited in solid state even up to 150 °C. From special molecular packing within the crystal lattice, it has been observed that the orientation of isolated water cluster and well-controlled molecular organization via multiple interactions can favor the structural rigidity of cocrystals more effectively to suppress the nonradiative transition, thus resulting in efficient room-temperature phosphorescence and unprecedented survival of HTP.

Here, we are reporting the spontaneous transformation of the active esters of N-Boc protected E-α,ß-unsaturated γ-amino acids into the corresponding Z-α,ß-unsaturated γ-lactams with concomitant E → Z isomerization in the presence of a weak base. No cyclization was observed in the absence of the base. Analysis revealed that amide γ-NH is crucial for both lactamization and E → Z isomerization. This mild transformation provides easy access to the synthetically challenging α,ß-unsaturated γ-lactams and also gives new insights into the E → Z isomerization of double bonds.

Utilization of the Wittig reaction to synthesize conjugative multiple double bonds is rare. We examined the utility of the Wittig reaction to construct conjugative two and three carbon-carbon double bonds on the N-protected amino acid backbone. The ethyl esters of N-Boc amino acids with multiple carbon-carbon double bonds in the backbone were isolated in excellent yields with exceptional E-selectivity of the double bonds. The allylic alcohols of α,ß-unsaturated γ-amino esters were selectively synthesized from the DIBAL-H and BF3·OEt2. The allylic alcohols were transformed into aldehydes using IBX oxidation. Using this protocol, we synthesized ethyl esters of N-Boc-(E,E)-α,ß,γ,δ-unsaturated ε-amino acids with various side-chain functionalities and ethyl esters of N-Boc-(E,E,E)-α,ß,γ,δ,ε,ζ-unsaturated η-amino acids with excellent yields. We speculated the exceptional E-selectivity is probably due to the stabilization of the planar transition state of the Wittig reaction with the double bond p-orbitals. No racemization was observed in the synthesis of amino acids. The reported process may serve as an excellent route to synthesize multiple conjugative carbon-carbon double bonds.

Vitamin B12 is inextricably associated with the development and maintenance of neuronal functions. It is classically associated with subacute combined degeneration and peripheral neuropathy; however, cranial neuropathy is uncommon. We observed the rarest neurological manifestation of B12 deficiency. A 12 months infant had history of lethargy, irritability, anorexia, paleness, vomiting, and neurodevelopmental delay for 2 months. He also developed inattention and altered sleep pattern. His mother noticed bilateral inward rotation of both eyes. On examination, the infant had bilateral lateral rectus palsy. The infant was found to have anemia (7.7g/dL) and severe B12 deficiency (74pg/mL). On MRI, there was cerebral atrophy, subdural hematoma (SDH) and wide cisternal spaces and sulci. On supplementation with cobalamin, he improved clinically though mild restriction of lateral gaze on the left side persists. Follow up MRI showed significant improvement in cerebral atrophy with resolution of SDH. To date, such clinical presentation of B12 deficiency has never been reported. The authors suggest B12 supplementation for at risk population esp at antenatal stage and lactating mothers in national programs. The treatment of this condition should be initiated early to prevent long term sequelae.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) is one of the top ten cereal crops in the world and is grown for fodder and seed purposes. During the fall of 2019 to 2022, a disease causing small to long streaks on leaves was observed in sorghum fields of Hisar (29° 9' 6.6996'' N, 75° 43' 16.0428'' E), Rohtak (28° 53' 43.8540'' N, 76° 36' 23.8068'' E) and Mohindergarh (28° 16' 6.0492'' N, 76° 9' 3.3552'' E) regions of Haryana between July and October. The reddish brown streaks were observed in the interveinal spaces of upper and lower leaves. The disease incidence reached 20-30% of plants in affected fields. The diseased leaf tissues were disinfected with 70% alcohol and placed in a tube with sterile water. After 30 minutes, 100 µl of the suspension was inoculated onto nutrient agar medium, incubated at 28 ± 2°C for three days, and a pure culture was obtained by restreaking on nutrient agar (Janse, 2005). The rod-shaped gram-negative bacterium with round, cream to white colonies was positive for methyl red, citrate utilization, urease activity, and glucose, lactose, sorbitol, rhamnose and sucrose fermentation tests. The genomic DNA of the bacterial suspension was extracted and 16S rDNA was amplified using universal 27F/1492R primers (Marchesi et al. 1998), resulting in tentative identification as Klebsiella sp. It was further confirmed with PCR amplification of Klebsiella specific primers (F:5'-CGCGTACTATACGCCATGAACGTA-3'; R:5'-ACCGTTGATCACTTCGGTCAGG-3') for gyrA gene (Brisse and Verhoef 2001). Discrete PCR amplicons of 1,500 (16S rDNA) and 300 bp (gyrA) were observed in a 1% (w/v) agarose gel. Forward and reverse DNA sequencing of both amplicons of the Hisar isolate (VMKV101) was carried out using a BDT v3.1 Cycle sequencing kit and consensus sequences were generated by using the program SeqMan Ultra (DNASTAR Lasergene). Sequences of the PCR products were deposited in GenBank with accession numbers MZ569433 (16S rDNA) and OP390080 (gyrA). The 16S rDNA sequence was 97.32% similar to K. variicola strain 13450 (CP026013; 1,450/1,490 bp) and the gyrA sequence had 99.66% similarity to K. variicola strain FH-1 (CP054254; 297/298 bp). A 16S RNA-based phylogenetic tree done by MEGA11 (Tamura et al. 2021) using the Maximum Likelihood method showed that strain VMKV101 clustered with K. variicola type strain F2R9. The complete bacterial genome (GCA025629215), sequenced by the Ion GeneStudio S5 system using Ion 530 chips (Thermo Fisher Scientific), was 99.03% identical by average nucleotide identity (ANI) to the type genome (CP045783) of Klebsiella variicola, with 87.8% genome coverage. For pathogenicity testing, a bacterial suspension (10 ml, 1×107 colony forming units/ml) was injected into the whole whorl after mechanical injury on 15-20 days old seedlings of the susceptible genotype HC-171, then plants were incubated at 35 ± 2°C, >80% relative humidity. Control plants were injected with sterile distilled water. Initial symptoms were observed on leaves of inoculated plants after 5 to 7 days as narrow, small longitudinal reddish brown streaks. As the disease progressed, the streaks on the leaf blade increased in number and size maintaining the reddish brown color. These streaks had slightly wavy margins and were surrounded by bright yellow halos. After 15 to 20 days, the streaks were 0.5 to 2.0 mm wide and 1.0 to 5.0 cm long, occasionally up to 10.0 cm long on both side of the leaves. Over time, neighboring streaks coalesced to form large necrotic areas. All inoculated plants exhibited identical symptoms. No symptoms were observed on control leaves. The reisolated bacterium from diseased sorghum leaves showed exactly the same morphological, biochemical and 16S RNA and gyrA molecular characteristics. To our knowledge, this is the first report of K. variicola causing a leaf streak disease on sorghum. Klebsiella species primarily cause diseases in humans and animals, but K. variicola has been found to incite banana soft rot (Fan et al. 2015) and K. aerogenes to cause stem rot in pearl millet (Malik et al. 2022). Differences of prevalence, spread and control between K. variicola and two other bacteria (Xanthomonas vasicola pv. holcicola causing Bacterial leaf streak; Paraburkholderia andropogonis causing Bacterial leaf stripe) causing leaf streak diseases on sorghum need to be determined. The identification of Klebsiella leaf streak disease lays the groundwork for future investigations into epidemiology and management of K. variicola on sorghum.

Background: COVID-19 has significantly impacted the care of children with chronic illness. There is a paucity of data on issues faced by parents of children with epilepsy (CWE) in an Indian setup. Objectives: The objective was to describe the parental perspective of the problems faced by them on the care of their CWE during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: Parents of CWE who physically visited the clinic for their follow-up visit were asked to narrate their experiences about the problems they faced during the first lockdown due to COVID-19. The narratives were audio recorded, and transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis to arrive at broad themes. Results: Four broad themes were identified: transport-related issues, medication-related issues, issues related to doctor consultation, and diagnostic delay. Limited transportation facilities, lack of appropriate social distancing norms in public transport and outpatient units, rigorous frisking by personnel during travel, fear of viral transmission during outpatient visits, nonavailability of antiseizure medications (ASMs) in local markets, lack of discounts by pharmacy, change of brands of ASM, and inability to undergo scheduled diagnostic investigations were some of the major issues raised by parents of CWE. Conclusion: Parents of CWE had trouble in transport to the hospital, inadequate access to ASMs, difficulties in doctor consultation, and delays in diagnostic investigations during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

N-doped graphene stabilized Cu(I)-catalyzed self-healing nanocomposites are developed. This study found the use of N-doped graphene as both a nanostructured material for enhancing mechanical and conductive properties and a catalyst promoter (a scaffold for catalytic copper(I) particles), helpful to trigger self-healing via "click chemistry". Due to an increase in electron density on nitrogen atom doping, including the coordination of N-doped rGO with Cu+ ions, nitrogen-doped graphene-supported copper particles demonstrate a higher reaction yield at room temperature without adding any external ligand/base. In this study, only one component (an azide moiety containing a healing agent) was encapsulated, whereas another component (an alkyne moiety containing a healing agent) was as such (without encapsulation) homogeneously dispersed in a matrix. Triggered capsule rupture then induces the contact of the healing agents with the N-doped graphene-based catalyst and the alkyne molecules dispersed in the matrix, inducing a "click"-reaction, allowing onsite damage to be repaired as determined by mechanical measurements entirely. Tensile measurements were also performed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to support the findings. Given the enormous importance of autonomic repair of materials damage, this concept here reports a trustworthy and reliable chemical system with a high level of robustness.

Background & objectives: The safety of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine is a cause of concern for many who have been vaccinated. The people have multiple concerns and fear regarding the adverse events of the vaccine. Thus, this study was undertaken to establish the safety profile of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Corona Virus Vaccine (Recombinant) among the healthcare professionals. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. After taking clearance from the institutional ethics committee 1500 healthcare professionals, who had their vaccination in the past two weeks were selected. They were provided with an online survey proforma regarding adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) of COVID-19 vaccine developed using google forms with an informed consent form affixed to it. Results: A total of 1036 individuals participated in the study. The mean and median (inter quartile range) age of the participants was 37.7 ±11.25 and 35 (29-46) yr, respectively. Of these, 52.1 per cent were female, 29.3 per cent were doctors, 33.4 per cent were nurses and 9.5 per cent were paramedical staff. Forty six per cent participants experienced one or more minor AEFIs such as pain, tenderness, redness, etc. at the injection site. Fatigue (31.75%), generalized feeling of unwell (28.57%), muscle pain (23.16%) and fever (21.71%) were the most commonly reported systemic AEFIs followed by headache (20.07%), dizziness (10.03%) and joint pains (15.25%). Most of them experienced these AEFIs within 24 h of the first dose of administration. About 42 per cent of the participants took oral antipyretics/analgesics for managing the AEFIs. Interpretation & conclusions: ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Corona Virus Vaccine was found to be associated with mild local and systemic AEFIs that were more common after the first dose as compared to the second dose. There adverse events could be dealt with oral over-the-counter medications, with no requirement of hospitalization.

Brain development involves a series of intricately choreographed neuronal differentiation and maturation steps that are acutely vulnerable to interferences from chemical exposures. Many genes involved in neurodevelopmental processes show evolutionarily conserved expression patterns in mammals and may constitute useful indicators/biomarkers for the evaluation of potential developmental neurotoxicity. Based on these premises, this study developed a bioinformatics framework to guide the design of a gene expression-based in vitro developmental neurotoxicity assay targeting evolutionary conserved genes associated with neuronal differentiation and maturation in rat cerebellar granule cells (CGCs). Rat, mouse and human genes involved in neurodevelopment and presenting one-to-one orthology were selected and orthologous exons within these genes were identified. PCR primer sets were designed within these orthologous exons and their specificity was evaluated in silico. The performance and specificity of rat, mouse and human PCR primer sets were then confirmed experimentally. Finally, RT-qPCR analyses in CGCs exposed in vitro to well-known neurotoxicants (Chlorpyrifos and Chlorpyrifos oxon) uncovered perturbations of expression levels for most of the selected genes. This bioinformatics framework for gene and target sequence selection may facilitate the identification of transcriptional biomarkers for developmental neurotoxicity assays and the comparison of gene expression data across experimental models from different mammalian species.

Yersiniosis, caused by Yersinia enterocolitica, is the third most rampant zoonotic disease in Europe; the pathogen shows high antibiotic resistance. Herbs have multiple anti-microbial components that reduce microorganism resistance. Therefore, an extract of Picrorhiza kurroa (P. kurroa) was evaluated for potential antimicrobial activity. We report that the ethanolic extract of P. kurroa showed effective antimicrobial activity (zone of inhibition: 29.8 mm, Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC): 2.45 mg/mL, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC): 2.4 mg/mL) against Yersinia enterocolitica. Potential bioactive compounds from P. kurroa were identified using LC-MS, namely, cerberidol, annonidine A, benzyl formate, picroside-1, and furcatoside A. P. kurroa showed effective antimicrobial potential in skim milk at different pH, acidity, and water activity levels. P. kurroa affected the physiology of Yersinia enterocolitica and reduced the number of live cells. Yersinia enterocolitica, when incubated with P. kurroa extract, showed lower toxin production. Picroside-1 was isolated and showed higher antimicrobial potential in comparison to the standard antibiotic. Picroside-1 lysed the Yersinia enterocolitica cells, as observed under scanning electron microscopy. Docking revealed that picroside-1 (ligand) showed both hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions with the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) protein of Yersinia enterocolitica and that DHFR is a possible drug target. The high activity and natural origin of Picroside-1 justify its potential as a possible drug candidate for Yersinia enterocolitica.

Organic optoelectronic functional materials featuring circularly polarized emission and persistent luminescence represent a novel research frontier and show promising applications in data encryption, displays, biological imaging, and so on. Herein, we present a simple and universal approach to achieve circularly polarized organic phosphorescence (CPP) from amorphous copolymers by the incorporation of axial chiral chromophores into polymer chains via radical cross-linked polymerization. Our experimental data reveal that copolymers (R/S)-PBNA exhibit a maximum CPP efficiency of 30.6% and the largest dissymmetric factor of 9.4 × 10-3 and copolymers (R/S)-PNA show the longest lifetime of 0.68 s under ambient conditions. Given the CPP property of these copolymers, their potential applications in multiple information encryption and displays are demonstrated, respectively. These findings not only lay the foundation for the development of amorphous polymers with superior CPP but also expand the outlook of room-temperature phosphorescent materials.

Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. Syn. Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke] is the oldest and widely cultivated millet in Asian and African countries, mostly grown over low fertile soils in more than 40 countries covering an area of 312.00 lakh hectares (FAOSTAT 2017). In Haryana, crop was grown over an area of 4.30 lakh hectares during Kharif 2019. Pearl millet is prone to many fungal and bacterial diseases. During 2018 to 2020, a new devastating diseas exhibiting stem rot like symptoms was observed in pearl millet growing regions in Indian state of Haryana. The isolated disease causing agent was a bacterium, where 16S rDNA-based nucleotide sequence deposited in NCBI GenBank (Accession nos. MZ433194.1) conferred its nearness to Klebsiella aerogenes (Hormaeche and Edwards 1960) Tindall et al. 2017. Further, DNA gyrase genomic sequence (NCBI Accession nos. MZ707528.1) also stayed its high homology to K. aerogenes. Klebsiella usually known to cause diseases in humans and animals, and also has been found inciting different kind of rots in different plantations viz. top rot in maize (Huang Min et al. 2016). Pearl millet is susceptible to minor bacterial diseases viz. bacterial leaf streak (Xanthomonas campestris), bacterial leaf spot (Pseudomonas syringae) and leaf stripe (P. avenae). Earlier, among the plant pathogenic bacterial entirety, only Erwinia chrysanthemi is known to cause stem rot diseases in sorghum (Saxena et al. 1991) amongst different types of millet. Extensive disease survey of pearl millet growing regions (Hisar, Bhiwani, Rewari, Mohindergarh and Bawal districts of Haryana having an altitude of 215, 225, 245, 262 and 266 m, respectively) in rainy seasons of 2019 and 2020 revealed the prevalence of typical stem rot disease, representing up to 70% disease incidence in the infected fields. The pieces of symptomatic stem of different plants were collected from two locations (Hisar and Bhiwani) and associated organism was isolated following the techniques of Janse (2005). The resulting growth of bacterial cultures were further purified on nutrient agar (NA) media using streak plate technique where colony growth of both the isolates were observed as morphotypes. The resulting bacteria were gram-negative and rod-shaped. Colonies were round and creamish white on NA. Isolated morphotypes were positive for indole production, methyl red, Voges Proskauer's test, citrate utilization, arabinose, mannitol, rhamnose and sucrose, whereas negative for glucose, adonitol, lactose and sorbitol tests. Biochemical tests were performed following standard methods (Holt et al. 1994). Molecular analysis of both isolates was performed using two sets of primers (universal 16S rRNA gene and genus-specific gyrA gene). The gyrA fragment (F: 5'-CGCGTACTATACGCCATGAACGTA-3'; R: 5'-ACCGTTGATCACTTCGGTCAGG-3') has been adopted as Klebsiella genus-specific gene (Brisse and Verhoef 2001). The quality and quantity of the isolated genomic DNA were analyzed using NanoDrop-2000 (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA) and resolved in 1% (w/v) agarose gel. Thereafter, visualized in gel documentation to confirm a single band of high-molecular-weight DNA. The fragment 16S rDNA was amplified using 27F and 1492R primers, where a single discrete PCR amplicon of 1500 bp was observed in 1% (w/v) agarose gel. Similarly, the gyrA gene was amplified using 09510F and 09510R primers that conferred a single discrete band of 400 bp. The forward and reverse DNA sequencing reaction of purified PCR amplicons (16S rDNA and gyrA) was carried out using BDT v3.1 Cycle sequencing kit on a genetic analyzer to generate gene sequences. The consensus sequences of both gene were generated from forward and reverse sequences data using aligner software. The obtained sequences of both genes were compared with the available nucleotide sequences in the NCBI using the blast 2.2.9 system (https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi?PAGE_TYPE=BlastSearch). The sequenced PCR amplicons showed up to 100% similarity with Klebsiella aerogenes 16s RNA nucleotide sequences (Accession nos. NR102493.2, MT373521.1; MF682950.1; MF462979.1 etc.). The bacterium also showed high nucleotide homology to K. aerogenes gyrA gene sequences (Accession nos. LR607333.1; CP035466.1; CP049600.1 etc.). The molecular phylogenetic analysis was done by the maximum likelihood method based on the Tamura-Nei model, and 1000 replicates for bootstrap testing in MEGA 7.0 software. The analysis involved 16 nucleotide sequences and evolutionary distances were computed. The 16s RNA based phylogenetic tree raised using MEGA7 (Kumar et al. 2016) elucidates that Klebsiella aerogenes Hisar formed a cluster with three K. aerogenes strains (Accession nos. MZ577128.1, MT373521.1 and MT 373520.1), whereas K. aerogenes Bhiwani displayed higher homology to NCBI sequences viz. MF682950.1, MT355368.1, MW331687.1and LC515412.1. Bacterial suspension was prepared by suspending bacterial cells into sterile water and cell density was adjusted to 1×107 colony forming unit/ml. For pathogenicity, leaf whorl inoculation (10 ml suspension/ whorl) was done on 15 days old seedlings of pearl millet genotype 7042S raised under controlled conditions (Temperature 35±2°C and more than 80% Relative Humidity). The pathogenicity was proved under field conditions as well. Initial symptoms were observed 4-5 days after inoculation as long streaks on leaves. Soon a spike in number of these leaf streaks was observed. Thereafter, water-soaked lesions appeared on the stem at 20-25 days after inoculation which later on turned brown to black. Severely diseased plants were dead, exhibiting hollowing of the stem and drying of leaves. The infected stem pith disintegrated and showed slimy rot symptoms and the pearl millet clumps toppled down. The rotten stems of both inoculations were again cut in to small pieces and the reisolated bacterium showed exactly the same morphological, biochemical and molecular characteristics. To our knowledge, this is the first report of stem rot of pearl millet incited by K. aerogenes in south-western regions of Haryana, India. Because the stem rot caused by K. aerogenes poses a significant threat to pearl millet cultivation, further research on biology, epidemiology and management choices is needed.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chains experienced an unprecedented challenge to fulfill consumers' demand. As a vital operational component, manual order picking operations are highly prone to infection spread among the workers, and thus, susceptible to interruption. This study revisits the well-known order batching problem by considering a new overlap objective that measures the time pickers work in close vicinity of each other and acts as a proxy of infection spread risk. For this purpose, a multi-objective optimization model and three multi-objective metaheuristics with an effective seeding procedure are proposed and are tested on the data obtained from a major US-based logistics company. Through extensive numerical experiments and comparison with the company's current practices, the results are discussed, and some managerial insights are offered. It is found that the picking capacity can have a determining impact on reducing the risk of infection spread through minimizing the picking overlap.

PURPOSE: Acute pancreatitis is commonly complicated by the development of pancreatic collections (PCs). Symptomatic PCs warrant drainage, and the available options include percutaneous, endoscopic, and open surgical approaches. The study aimed to assess the therapeutic effectiveness and safety of image guided percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) in the management of acute pancreatitis related PCs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a single-centre prospective study covering a 4-year study period. Acute pancreatitisrelated PCs complicated by secondary infection or those producing symptoms due to pressure effect on surrounding structures were enrolled and underwent ultrasound or computed tomography (CT)-guided PCD. The patients were followed to assess the success of PCD (defined as clinical, radiological improvement, and the avoidance of surgery) and any PCD-related complications. RESULTS: The study included 60 patients (60% males) with a mean age of 43.1 ± 21.2 years. PCD recorded a success rate of 80% (16/20) for acute peripancreatic fluid collections (APFC) and pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs), 75% (12/16) for walled-off necrosis (WON), and 50% (12/24) for acute necrotic collections (ANCs). Post-PCD surgery (necrosectomy ± distal pancreatectomy) was needed in 50% of ANC and 25% of WON. Only 20% of APFCs/PPs patients required surgical/endoscopic treatment post-PCD. Minor procedure-related complications were seen in 4 (6.6%) patients. CONCLUSION: PCD is an effective, safe, and minimally invasive therapeutic modality with a good success rate in the management of infected/symptomatic PCs.

Exposure to chemicals and other environmental stressors can differentially impact the expression of Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) splice variants. Surprisingly, despite the widespread use of the rat model in toxicological studies and the wealth of literature on this important biomarker of neurotoxicity, AChE coding exons and splice variants are not yet fully annotated in this species. To address this knowledge gap, a short problematic region of the rat AChE genomic DNA present in GenBank was first re-sequenced. This revised genomic sequence was then aligned to rat AChE RefSeq mRNA and compared to orthologous mammalian sequences, in order to map the coding exon and intron boundaries of the rat AChE gene. Based on these bioinformatics analyses, a sequence was predicted for the yet-unannotated rat Acetylcholinesterase readthrough (AChE-R) splice variant. PCR primers designed to specifically amplify rat AChE-R were used to confirm its expression in rat PC12 cells. Compared to the canonical AChE-S splice variant, AChE-R was expressed at much lower levels but presented distinct regulation patterns in PC12 cells and rat primary cerebral granule cells (CGCs) following exposure to Chlorpyrifos (a well-known neurotoxic organophosphate pesticide). Taken together, these observations point to the evolutionary conservation of the AChE-R splicing event between rodents and human and to the distinct regulation of AChE splice variants in response to toxicological challenges.

The design of molecular compounds that exhibit flexibility is an emerging area of research. Although a fair amount of success has been achieved in the design of plastic or elastic crystals, realizing multidimensional plastic and elastic bending remains challenging. We report herein a naphthalidenimine-boron complex that showed size-dependent dual mechanical bending behavior whereas its parent Schiff base was brittle. Detailed crystallographic and spectroscopic analysis revealed the importance of boron in imparting the interesting mechanical properties. Furthermore, the luminescence of the molecule was turned-on subsequent to boron complexation, thereby allowing it to be explored for multimode optical waveguide applications. Our in-depth study of the size-dependent plastic and elastic bending of the crystals thus provides important insights in molecular engineering and could act as a platform for the development of future smart flexible materials for optoelectronic applications.

Here we report the design, single crystal conformations, impact of the substituents and structural differences of two structurally important motifs, ß-sheets and ß-double helices. Though ß-sheets are common structural motifs in protein structures, ß-double helices are not common in proteins and peptides. We found that both ß-sheet mimetics and ß-double helices can be constructed from the homooligomers of α,ß-unsaturated γ-amino acids. Results suggested that introducing gem-dialkyl substitutions at the γ-carbon of the homooligomer of α,ß-unsaturated γ-amino acids resulted in the ß-double helix conformation, while the same oligomer with monosubstitution at the γ-carbon displayed a ß-sheet structure.

The Manuguru geothermal area, located in the Telangana state, is one of the least explored geothermal fields in India. In this study, characterization of the soil samples is carried out by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) coupled with analytical spectral-dependent principal component analysis. A total of 20 soil samples were collected both from near the thermal discharges as well as away from the thermal manifestations. LIBS spectra were recorded for all the collected soil samples and principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to easily identify the emission lines majorly responsible for variety classification of the soil samples. In this submission, a modified PCA was developed which is based on the spectral truncation method to reduce the huge number of spectral data obtained from LIBS. The PCA bi-plot on the LIBS data reveals the presence of two different clusters. One cluster represents the soil samples collected from the close vicinity of the thermal manifestations whereas the other cluster contains the soil samples collected away from the thermal sprouts. PCA performed on the chemical dataset of the soil samples also reveals the same clustering of the soil samples. Both LIBS and chemical analysis data shows that soil samples near the thermal waters are found to be enriched in B, Sr, Cs, Rb, Fe, Co, Al, Si, Ti, Ru, Mn, Mg, Cu, and Eu concentrations compared to the soil samples located away from thermal manifestations. This study demonstrates the potential use of LIBS coupled with PCA as a tool for variety discrimination of soil samples in a geothermal area. LIBS is shown to be a viable real-time elemental characterization technology for these samples, avoiding the rigorous dissolution required by other analytical techniques.
