RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Despite consistent recommendations from clinical guidelines, data from randomized trials on a long-term antithrombotic treatment strategy for patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease are still lacking. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, open-label, adjudicator-masked, randomized trial comparing edoxaban monotherapy with dual antithrombotic therapy (edoxaban plus a single antiplatelet agent) in patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease (defined as coronary artery disease previously treated with revascularization or managed medically). The risk of stroke was assessed on the basis of the CHA2DS2-VASc score (scores range from 0 to 9, with higher scores indicating a greater risk of stroke). The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause, myocardial infarction, stroke, systemic embolism, unplanned urgent revascularization, and major bleeding or clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding at 12 months. Secondary outcomes included a composite of major ischemic events and the safety outcome of major bleeding or clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding. RESULTS: We assigned 524 patients to the edoxaban monotherapy group and 516 patients to the dual antithrombotic therapy group at 18 sites in South Korea. The mean age of the patients was 72.1 years, 22.9% were women, and the mean CHA2DS2-VASc score was 4.3. At 12 months, a primary-outcome event had occurred in 34 patients (Kaplan-Meier estimate, 6.8%) assigned to edoxaban monotherapy and in 79 patients (16.2%) assigned to dual antithrombotic therapy (hazard ratio, 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30 to 0.65; P<0.001). The cumulative incidence of major ischemic events at 12 months appeared to be similar in the trial groups. Major bleeding or clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding occurred in 23 patients (Kaplan-Meier estimate, 4.7%) in the edoxaban monotherapy group and in 70 patients (14.2%) in the dual antithrombotic therapy group (hazard ratio, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.53). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease, edoxaban monotherapy led to a lower risk of a composite of death from any cause, myocardial infarction, stroke, systemic embolism, unplanned urgent revascularization, or major bleeding or clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding at 12 months than dual antithrombotic therapy. RESUMEN
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Platelet-fibrin clot strength (PFCS) is linked to major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) risk. However, the association between PFCS and platelet reactivity and their prognostic implication remains uncertain in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: In PCI-treated patients (n = 2512) from registry data from January 2010 to November 2018 in South Korea, PFCS using thromboelastography and platelet reactivity using VerifyNow were measured. High PFCS (PFCSHigh) was defined as thromboelastography maximal amplitude ≥ 68â mm, and high platelet reactivity (HPR) was defined as >208 P2Y12 reaction units. Patients were stratified into four groups according to maximal amplitude and P2Y12 reaction unit levels: (i) normal platelet reactivity (NPR)-PFCSNormal (31.8%), (ii) HPR-PFCSNormal (29.0%), (iii) NPR-PFCSHigh (18.1%), and (iv) HPR-PFCSHigh (21.1%). Major adverse cardiovascular event (all-cause death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) and major bleeding were followed up to 4â years. RESULTS: High platelet reactivity and PFCSHigh showed an additive effect for clinical outcomes (log-rank test, P < .001). Individuals with NPR-PFCSNormal, NPR-PFCSHigh, HPR-PFCSNormal, and HPR-PFCSHigh demonstrated MACE incidences of 7.5%, 12.6%, 13.4%, and 19.3%, respectively. The HPR-PFCSHigh group showed significantly higher risks of MACE compared with the NPR-PFCSNormal group [adjusted hazard ratio (HRadj) 1.89; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.23-2.91; P = .004] and the HPR-PFCSNormal group (HRadj 1.60; 95% CI 1.12-2.27; P = .009). Similar results were observed for all-cause death. Compared with HPR-PFCSNormal phenotype, NPR-PFCSNormal phenotype was associated with a higher risk of major bleeding (HRadj 3.12; 95% CI 1.30-7.69; P = .010). CONCLUSIONS: In PCI patients, PFCS and platelet reactivity demonstrated important relationships in predicting clinical prognosis. Their combined assessment may enhance post-PCI risk stratification for personalized antithrombotic therapy.

PURPOSE: To estimate the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in a real-world population of very high-risk Korean patients with prior myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke (IS), or symptomatic peripheral artery disease (sPAD), similar to the Further cardiovascular OUtcomes Research with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 Inhibition in subjects with Elevated Risk (FOURIER) trial population. METHODS: This retrospective study used the Asan Medical Center Heart Registry database built on electronic medical records (EMR) from 2000 to 2016. Patients with a history of clinically evident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) with multiple risk factors were followed up for 3 years. The primary endpoint was a composite of MI, stroke, hospitalization for unstable angina, coronary revascularization, and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Among 15,820 patients, the 3-year cumulative incidence of the composite primary endpoint was 15.3% and the 3-year incidence rate was 5.7 (95% CI 5.5-5.9) per 100 person-years. At individual endpoints, the rates of deaths, MI, and IS were 0.4 (0.3-0.4), 0.9 (0.8-0.9), and 0.8 (0.7-0.9), respectively. The risk of the primary endpoint did not differ significantly between recipients of different intensities of statin therapy. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals were only achieved in 24.4% of patients during the first year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: By analyzing EMR data representing routine practice in Korea, we found that patients with very high-risk ASCVD were at substantial risk of further cardiovascular events in 3 years. Given the observed risk of recurrent events with suboptimal lipid management by statin, additional treatment to control LDL-C might be necessary to reduce the burden of further cardiovascular events for very high-risk ASCVD patients.

The ferroelectric characteristics of a metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) ferroelectric tunneling junction (FTJ) capacitor device are investigated herein. The device consists of an aluminum-doped hafnium oxide (HAO) insulator sandwiched between tungsten (W) and titanium nitride (TiN) metal electrodes. Rapid thermal annealing (RTA) is performed for 20 s under a nitrogen atmosphere at temperatures of 750 °C, 800 °C, and 850 °C to find that ferroelectricity with a large remanent polarization (Pr) of 41.28 µC cm-2 can be obtained at the optimum annealing temperature of 800 °C. The presence of ferroelectricity is confirmed by polarization-switching positive-up-negative-down (PUND) measurements and by the hysteric polarization-voltage (P-V) loop. All devices exhibit excellent reliability, with an endurance of up to â¼106 cycles and long retention characteristics. In addition, the interfacial paraelectric capacitance (Ci) values of the three HAO FTJs are investigated via pulse-switching measurements. The results indicate that the HAO film annealed at 800 °C for 20 s exhibits an excellent tunneling electro-resistance (TER) ratio of 186% and this is attributed to the extra paraelectric layer formed between the ferroelectric layer and the bottom electrode. The detailed findings of this study are expected to assist in the development of hafnium oxide-based ferroelectric non-volatile memory applications.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the advantages of using the retrograde approach as an initial strategy rather than as a rescue strategy for complex chronic total occlusions (CTOs). BACKGROUND: Even for complex CTOs where a retrograde approach is deemed necessary, an antegrade approach is frequently used as an initial strategy in real-world practice. METHODS: We evaluated 352 retrograde procedures for CTO conducted at our high-volume center between January 2007 and January 2019. Procedural efficiency and safety was assessed based on the guidewire manipulation time (GWMT) and the occurrence of procedure-related adverse events for the primary retrograde approach (PRA) and the rescue retrograde approach (RRA). RESULTS: PRA and RRA were used in 191 (54.3%) and 161 (45.7%) of the CTO procedures, respectively. The complexity of the CTO lesion was significantly higher in the PRA group than in the RRA group (Japanese-CTO score, 2.62 ± 1.07 vs. 2.38 ± 1.06, p = 0.037). The technical success rate of two groups was similar (p = 0.47). The median GWMT required for PRA was significantly shorter than that for RRA (85 [interquartile range, 55-126] vs. 120 [85-157] min, p < 0.001). The total duration of the procedure and fluoroscopic time were shorter, and the number of guidewires and amount of contrast used during the index procedure were smaller in the PRA group. The incidence of procedure-related adverse events was not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: PRA showed higher procedural efficiency than RRA with comparable safety. Opting for PRA for complex CTOs might be a rational decision to enhance the procedural efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are difficult to diagnose early and have risk factors that are easy to overlook. Early prediction and personalization of treatment through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) may help clinicians and patients manage CVDs more effectively. However, to apply AI approaches to CVDs data, it is necessary to establish and curate a specialized database based on electronic health records (EHRs) and include pre-processed unstructured data. METHODS: To build a suitable database (CardioNet) for CVDs that can utilize AI technology, contributing to the overall care of patients with CVDs. First, we collected the anonymized records of 748,474 patients who had visited the Asan Medical Center (AMC) or Ulsan University Hospital (UUH) because of CVDs. Second, we set clinically plausible criteria to remove errors and duplication. Third, we integrated unstructured data such as readings of medical examinations with structured data sourced from EHRs to create the CardioNet. We subsequently performed natural language processing to structuralize the significant variables associated with CVDs because most results of the principal CVD-related medical examinations are free-text readings. Additionally, to ensure interoperability for convergent multi-center research, we standardized the data using several codes that correspond to the common data model. Finally, we created the descriptive table (i.e., dictionary of the CardioNet) to simplify access and utilization of data for clinicians and engineers and continuously validated the data to ensure reliability. RESULTS: CardioNet is a comprehensive database that can serve as a training set for AI models and assist in all aspects of clinical management of CVDs. It comprises information extracted from EHRs and results of readings of CVD-related digital tests. It consists of 27 tables, a code-master table, and a descriptive table. CONCLUSIONS: CardioNet database specialized in CVDs was established, with continuing data collection. We are actively supporting multi-center research, which may require further data processing, depending on the subject of the study. CardioNet will serve as the fundamental database for future CVD-related research projects.

BACKGROUND: Owing to the differential propensity for bleeding and ischemic events with response to antiplatelet therapy, the safety and effectiveness of potent P2Y12 inhibitor ticagrelor in East Asian populations remain uncertain. METHODS: In this multicenter trial, 800 Korean patients hospitalized for acute coronary syndromes with or without ST elevation and intended for invasive management were randomly assigned to receive, in a 1:1 ratio, ticagrelor (180 mg loading dose, 90 mg twice daily thereafter) or clopidogrel (600 mg loading dose, 75 mg daily thereafter). The primary safety outcome was clinically significant bleeding (a composite of major bleeding or minor bleeding according to PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes) criteria at 12 months. RESULTS: At 12 months, the incidence of clinically significant bleeding was significantly higher in the ticagrelor group than in the clopidogrel group (11.7% [45/400] vs 5.3% [21/400]; hazard ratio [HR], 2.26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.34 to 3.79; P=0.002). The incidences of major bleeding (7.5% [29/400] vs 4.1% [16/400], P=0.04) and fatal bleeding (1% [4/400] vs 0%, P=0.04) were also higher in the ticagrelor group. The incidence of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or stroke was not significantly different between the ticagrelor group and the clopidogrel group (9.2% [36/400] vs 5.8% [23/400]; HR, 1.62; 95% CI, 0.96 to 2.74; P=0.07). Overall safety and effectiveness findings were similar with the use of several different analytic methods and in multiple subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: In Korean acute coronary syndrome patients intended to receive early invasive management, standard-dose ticagrelor as compared with clopidogrel was associated with a higher incidence of clinically significant bleeding. The numerically higher incidence of ischemic events should be interpreted with caution, given the present trial was underpowered to draw any conclusion regarding efficacy. BACKGROUND: Whether the diabetic status differentially affects the clinical outcomes with different drug-eluting stents (DES) has been controversial. METHODS AND RESULTS: From stent-specific, prospective DES registries, we evaluated 17,184 patients (11,428 in non-diabetics and 5,756 in diabetics) who received several contemporary DES: 3570 sirolimus-eluting stents (SES), 5,023 cobalt-chromium everolimus-eluting stents (CoCr-EES), 2,985 platinum-chromium EES (PtCr-EES), 2,913 Resolute zotarolimus-eluting stents (Re-ZES), and 2,693 biodegradable-polymer biolimus-eluting stents (BP-BES). The primary outcome was patient-oriented composite endpoint (POCE, a composite of all-cause death, any myocardial infarction, and any revascularization) at 3-year follow-up and target-vessel failure (a composite of cardiac death, target-vessel myocardial infarction, and target-vessel revascularization) at 3 years was also evaluated. In non-diabetics, the rates of POCE were not significantly different (CoCr-EES 14.3%, PtCr-EES 13.0%, Re-ZES 14.3%, BP-BES 13.4%, and SES 14.6%; overall p = .39). In diabetics, similar results were revealed (CoCr-EES 18.4%, PtCr-EES 20.3%, Re-ZES 17.3%, BP-BES 17.7%, and SES 17.8%; overall p = .44). In multiple treatment propensity-score weighting analysis, regardless of the diabetic status, the hazard ratios for POCE between-individual comparison were similar. Target-vessel failure (a composite of cardiac death, target-vessel myocardial infarction, and target-vessel revascularization) was also comparable except the higher ratio of Re-ZES than PtCr-EES (hazard ratio 1.25, 1.26, 95% confidence interval 1.00-1.55, p = .048) in patients without diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: In this clinical-practice registry study, regardless the diabetic status, the 3-year rates of the primary outcome were similar among different types of DES, suggesting no differential clinical response between contemporary DES in patients with or without diabetes.

AIMS: To evaluate the acute and long-term prognosis of acute aortic syndrome (AAS) according to the disease entity [intramural haematoma (IMH) vs. aortic dissection (AD)] and the anatomical location (type A vs. B). METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 1012 patients [672 with AD and 340 with IMH (33.6%)] were enrolled between 1993 and 2015. Compared with AD patients, IMH patients were older and had higher frequency of female sex and distal aorta involvement. The overall crude in-hospital mortality of AAS was 8.6%; type A AD [15.0%; adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 30.4; 95% confidence interval (CI) 8.62-107.3; P < 0.001], type A IMH (8.0%; aHR 4.85; 95% CI 1.29-18.2; P = 0.019), type B AD (5.0%; aHR 3.51; 95% CI 1.00-12.4; P = 0.051), and type B IMH [1.5%; aHR 1.00 (reference)]. During a median follow-up duration of 8.5 years (interquartile range: 4.0-13.5 years), AD (aHR 2.78; 95% CI 1.87-4.14; P < 0.001) and type A (aHR 2.28; 95% CI 1.45-3.58; P < 0.001) was associated with a higher risk of aortic death. After 90 days, a risk of aortic death was no longer associated with anatomical location (aHR 0.74; 95% CI 0.40-1.36; P = 0.33), but remained associated with disease entity (aHR 1.83; 95% CI 1.10-3.04; P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: The clinical features, response to treatment strategy, and outcomes of IMH patients were distinct from those of AD patients. Both early and late survival was better for IMH than for AD. In addition to the anatomical location of AAS, the disease entity is an independent factor associated with both acute and long-term mortality in patients with AAS. Further investigation is necessary to confirm the prognostic implication of disease entity in different patient populations.

Astrocytes, the most abundant cell type in the brain, are non-excitable cells and play critical roles in brain function. Mature astrocytes typically exhibit a linear current-voltage relationship termed passive conductance, which is believed to enable astrocytes to maintain potassium homeostasis in the brain. We previously demonstrated that TWIK-1/TREK-1 heterodimeric channels mainly contribute to astrocytic passive conductance. However, the molecular identity of astrocytic passive conductance is still controversial and needs to be elucidated. Here, we report that spadin, an inhibitor of TREK-1, can dramatically reduce astrocytic passive conductance in brain slices. A series of gene silencing experiments demonstrated that spadin-sensitive currents are mediated by TWIK-1/TREK-1 heterodimeric channels in cultured astrocytes and hippocampal astrocytes from brain slices. Our study clearly showed that TWIK-1/TREK-1-heterodimeric channels can act as the main molecular machinery of astrocytic passive conductance, and suggested that spadin can be used as a specific inhibitor to control astrocytic passive conductance.

Neural circuits, governed by a complex interplay between excitatory and inhibitory neurons, are the substrate for information processing, and the organization of synaptic connectivity in neural network is an important determinant of circuit function. Here, we analyzed the fine structure of connectivity in hippocampal CA1 excitatory and inhibitory neurons innervated by Schaffer collaterals (SCs) using mGRASP in male mice. Our previous study revealed spatially structured synaptic connectivity between CA3 and CA1 pyramidal cells (PCs). Surprisingly, parvalbumin-positive interneurons (PVs) showed a significantly more random pattern spatial structure. Notably, application of Peters' rule for synapse prediction by random overlap between axons and dendrites enhanced structured connectivity in PCs, but, by contrast, made the connectivity pattern in PVs more random. In addition, PCs in a deep sublayer of striatum pyramidale appeared more highly structured than PCs in superficial layers, and little or no sublayer specificity was found in PVs. Our results show that CA1 excitatory PCs and inhibitory PVs innervated by the same SC inputs follow different connectivity rules. The different organizations of fine scale structured connectivity in hippocampal excitatory and inhibitory neurons provide important insights into the development and functions of neural networks.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Understanding how neural circuits generate behavior is one of the central goals of neuroscience. An important component of this endeavor is the mapping of fine-scale connection patterns that underlie, and help us infer, signal processing in the brain. Here, using our recently developed synapse detection technology (mGRASP and neuTube), we provide detailed profiles of synaptic connectivity in excitatory (CA1 pyramidal) and inhibitory (CA1 parvalbumin-positive) neurons innervated by the same presynaptic inputs (CA3 Schaffer collaterals). Our results reveal that these two types of CA1 neurons follow different connectivity patterns. Our new evidence for differently structured connectivity at a fine scale in hippocampal excitatory and inhibitory neurons provides a better understanding of hippocampal networks and will guide theoretical and experimental studies.

BACKGROUND: Acuity of clinical presentation may influence decision making of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) for left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease. However, it is undetermined whether clinical indication for myocardial revascularization may affect the relative long-term effect after PCI and CABG. METHODS: In the MAIN-COMPARE study including 2,240 patients with LMCA disease treated with PCI (nâ¯=â¯1102) or CABG (nâ¯=â¯1138), we examined interaction between acuity of clinical presentation (acute coronary syndromes [ACS] or non-ACS) and revascularization strategy on 10-year outcomes. Primary outcome was a composite of all-cause death, Q-wave myocardial infarction, or stroke. Secondary outcomes were all-cause death or target vessel revascularization. RESULTS: In overall patients, 1,603 patients (71.6%) presented with ACS and 637 patients (28.4%) presented with non-ACS. The 10-year adjusted risks for primary composite outcome were similar after PCI and CABG among patients who presented with non-ACS (hazard ratio [HR] 1.07; 95% CI 0.71-1.61) and those who presented with ACS (HR 1.00; 95% CI 0.81-1.24) (P for interactionâ¯=â¯.29). The adjusted risks of death were also similar between 2 groups in non-ACS (HR 0.98; 95% CI 0.63-1.51) and ACS (HR 1.02; 95% CI 0.81-1.28) patients (P for interactionâ¯=â¯.62). The adjusted risks of target vessel revascularization were consistently higher after PCI in non-ACS (HR 6.38; 95% CI 3.14-12.96) and ACS (HR 3.96; 95% CI 2.80-5.60) patients (P for interactionâ¯=â¯.39). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with LMCA disease, we have identified no significant interaction between the acuity of clinical indication and the relative treatment effect of PCI versus CABG on 10-year clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how the relative treatment effect of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG) on clinical outcomes in ostial or shaft left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease has evolved over time. METHODS: This study included 2,112 patients with ostial or shaft LMCA disease from IRIS-MAIN registry who underwent PCI (n = 1,329) or CABG (n = 783). Patients were stratified by time period based on stent type availability: wave 1 (1995-2002, bare-metal stent [BMS] era); wave 2 (2003-2006, first-generation drug-eluting stent [DES] era); and wave 3 (2007-2014, second-generation DES era). RESULTS: Compared to CABG, PCI has been used more frequently from wave 1 to wave 3. PCI showed substantial improvements over time with respect to death (P for trend = 0.012); the composite of death, myocardial infarction (MI), or stroke (P for trend = 0.047); repeat revascularization (P for trend < 0.001); and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE; a composite of death, MI, stroke, or repeat revascularization) (P for trend < 0.001). By contrast, outcomes of CABG remained relatively stable over time. The gap between the treatment effects of CABG vs PCI for MACCE has narrowed over time; the adjusted hazard ratios for CABG compared to PCI during wave 1, 2, and 3 were 0.41 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.22-0.76), 0.47 (95% CI: 0.31-0.71), and 0.78 (95% CI: 0.50-1.20), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with ostial or shaft LMCA disease, significant improvements in PCI outcomes resulted in a progressive decline in the gap between the outcomes of CABG and PCI.

A prognostic value of right ventricular (RV) systolic function assessed by echocardiography in patients with acute non-massive pulmonary embolism (PE) remains controversial. The hypothesis was RV free wall strain measured using speckle-tracking echocardiography might be a powerful prognostic factor in those patients. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of echocardiographic measurements of RV systolic function for clinical outcomes and to assess the correlation between the echocardiographic RV function parameters in patients with acute non-massive PE. Between November 2013 and September 2016, 144 consecutive patients diagnosed as acute non-massive pulmonary embolism were prospectively enrolled and echocardiographic evaluations were performed within 1 week of diagnosis to measure various parameters of RV systolic function. The primary endpoint was in-hospital events, the composite of in-hospital PE-related death, need of additive treatments such as thrombolysis or pulmonary artery thromboembolectomy, and need of inotropics due to unstable vital sign. Among patients (mean age 60.3 ± 14.7 years, 50% female) with acute non-massive PE, the in-hospital event rate was 11.1% (16 of 144 patients). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, after adjustment of confounding factors such as age, gender, and diabetes mellitus, RV free wall strain [odd ratio (OR) 1.12, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-1.21, p = 0.002] and RV global wall strain (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.07-1.35, p = 0.002) were independent predictors for in-hospital events. The event rates were significantly different between groups classified based on RV free wall strain with cut-off value of - 15.85% (p < 0.001). RV strain assessed with speckle-tracking echocardiography is an independent prognostic marker for in-hospital events in patients with acute non-massive PE. Our results may help identify high-intermediate risk patients who need a closer monitoring.

We report an investigation on quantum discord in classical second-order interference. In particular, we theoretically show that a bipartite state with D = 0.311 of discord can be generated via classical second-order interference. We also experimentally verify the theory by obtaining D = 0.197 ± 0.060 of non-zero discord state. Together with the fact that the nonclassicalities originated from physical constraints and information theoretic perspectives are not equivalent, this result provides an insight to understand the nature of quantum discord.
RESUMEN
Multiphoton interference effects can be measured with a single detector when two input photons are temporally well separated when compared with the dead time of the single-photon avalanche detector. Here we experimentally demonstrate that the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect can be observed with a single non-photon-number resolving detector via a time-delayed coincidence measurement of successive electrical signals from the detector. The two-photon interference experiment is performed by utilizing temporally well-separated pairwise weak coherent pulses, and the interference fringes are successfully measured with high visibility in the range of the limited upper bound for the weak coherent photon source.
RESUMEN
Quantum-mechanical wave-particle duality implies that probability distributions for granular detection events exhibit wave-like interference. On the single-particle level, this leads to self-interference--e.g., on transit across a double slit--for photons as well as for large, massive particles, provided that no which-way information is available to any observer, even in principle. When more than one particle enters the game, their specific many-particle quantum features are manifested in correlation functions, provided the particles cannot be distinguished. We are used to believe that interference fades away monotonically with increasing distinguishability--in accord with available experimental evidence on the single- and on the many-particle level. Here, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that such monotonicity of the quantum-to-classical transition is the exception rather than the rule whenever more than two particles interfere. As the distinguishability of the particles is continuously increased, different numbers of particles effectively interfere, which leads to interference signals that are, in general, nonmonotonic functions of the distinguishability of the particles. This observation opens perspectives for the experimental characterization of many-particle coherence and sheds light on decoherence processes in many-particle systems.
RESUMEN
Entanglement is known to be an essential resource for many quantum information processes. However, it is now known that some quantum features may be acheived with quantum discord, a generalized measure of quantum correlation. In this paper, we study how quantum discord, or more specifically, the measures of entropic discord and geometric discord are affected by the influence of amplitude damping decoherence. We also show that a protocol deploying weak measurement and quantum measurement reversal can effectively protect quantum discord from amplitude damping decoherence, enabling to distribute quantum correlation between two remote parties in a noisy environment.
RESUMEN
We present a high-performance reconfigurable coincidence counting unit (CCU) using a low-end field programmable gate array (FPGA) and peripheral circuits. Because of the flexibility guaranteed by the FPGA program, we can easily change system parameters, such as internal input delays, coincidence configurations, and the coincidence time window. In spite of a low-cost implementation, the proposed CCU architecture outperforms previous ones in many aspects: it has 8 logic inputs and 4 coincidence outputs that can measure up to eight-fold coincidences. The minimum coincidence time window and the maximum input frequency are 0.47 ns and 163 MHz, respectively. The CCU will be useful in various experimental research areas, including the field of quantum optics and quantum information.
