BACKGROUND: Many two-dimensional (2-D) radiographic views are used to help diagnose cam femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), but there is little consensus as to which view or combination of views is most effective at visualizing the magnitude and extent of the cam lesion (ie, severity). Previous studies have used a single image from a sequence of CT or MR images to serve as a reference standard with which to evaluate the ability of 2-D radiographic views and associated measurements to describe the severity of the cam lesion. However, single images from CT or MRI data may fail to capture the apex of the cam lesion. Thus, it may be more appropriate to use measurements of three-dimensional (3-D) surface reconstructions from CT or MRI data to serve as an anatomic reference standard when evaluating radiographic views and associated measurements used in the diagnosis of cam FAI. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to use digitally reconstructed radiographs and 3-D statistical shape modeling to (1) determine the correlation between 2-D radiographic measurements of cam FAI and 3-D metrics of proximal femoral shape; and 2) identify the combination of radiographic measurements from plain film projections that were most effective at predicting the 3-D shape of the proximal femur. METHODS: This study leveraged previously acquired CT images of the femur from a convenience sample of 37 patients (34 males; mean age, 27 years, range, 16-47 years; mean body mass index [BMI], 24.6 kg/m, range, 19.0-30.2 kg/m) diagnosed with cam FAI imaged between February 2005 and January 2016. Patients were diagnosed with cam FAI based on a culmination of clinical examinations, history of hip pain, and imaging findings. The control group consisted of 59 morphologically normal control participants (36 males; mean age, 29 years, range, 15-55 years; mean BMI, 24.4 kg/m, range, 16.3-38.6 kg/m) imaged between April 2008 and September 2014. Of these controls, 30 were cadaveric femurs and 29 were living participants. All controls were screened for evidence of femoral deformities using radiographs. In addition, living control participants had no history of hip pain or previous surgery to the hip or lower limbs. CT images were acquired for each participant and the surface of the proximal femur was segmented and reconstructed. Surfaces were input to our statistical shape modeling pipeline, which objectively calculated 3-D shape scores that described the overall shape of the entire proximal femur and of the region of the femur where the cam lesion is typically located. Digital reconstructions for eight plain film views (AP, Meyer lateral, 45° Dunn, modified 45° Dunn, frog-leg lateral, Espié frog-leg, 90° Dunn, and cross-table lateral) were generated from CT data. For each view, measurements of the α angle and head-neck offset were obtained by two researchers (intraobserver correlation coefficients of 0.80-0.94 for the α angle and 0.42-0.80 for the head-neck offset measurements). The relationships between radiographic measurements from each view and the 3-D shape scores (for the entire proximal femur and for the region specific to the cam lesion) were assessed with linear correlation. Additionally, partial least squares regression was used to determine which combination of views and measurements was the most effective at predicting 3-D shape scores. RESULTS: Three-dimensional shape scores were most strongly correlated with α angle on the cross-table view when considering the entire proximal femur (r = -0.568; p < 0.001) and on the Meyer lateral view when considering the region of the cam lesion (r = -0.669; p < 0.001). Partial least squares regression demonstrated that measurements from the Meyer lateral and 90° Dunn radiographs produced the optimized regression model for predicting shape scores for the proximal femur (R = 0.405, root mean squared error of prediction [RMSEP] = 1.549) and the region of the cam lesion (R = 0.525, RMSEP = 1.150). Interestingly, views with larger differences in the α angle and head-neck offset between control and cam FAI groups did not have the strongest correlations with 3-D shape. CONCLUSIONS: Considered together, radiographic measurements from the Meyer lateral and 90° Dunn views provided the most effective predictions of 3-D shape of the proximal femur and the region of the cam lesion as determined using shape modeling metrics. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our results suggest that clinicians should consider using the Meyer lateral and 90° Dunn views to evaluate patients in whom cam FAI is suspected. However, the α angle and head-neck offset measurements from these and other plain film views could describe no more than half of the overall variation in the shape of the proximal femur and cam lesion. Thus, caution should be exercised when evaluating femoral head anatomy using the α angle and head-neck offset measurements from plain film radiographs. Given these findings, we believe there is merit in pursuing research that aims to develop the framework necessary to integrate statistical shape modeling into clinical evaluation, because this could aid in the diagnosis of cam FAI.

INTRODUCTION: Turmeric has been widely used in curry powders as the main spice. Conventional chemical analysis such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) may take several hours to extract curcuminoids and prepare samples in many turmeric processing industries. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate curcuminoids in turmeric powder using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: All spectral acquisition ranged from 1100 to 2500 nm and a chemometrics analysis using partial least-squares (PLS) regression was performed to quantify the contents of individual curcuminoids. The HPLC was carried out (n = 129) to develop a PLS model based on the reference values. RESULTS: High correlation coefficient (R(2) > 0.93) and low standard error of cross-validation (SECV < 0.20 g/100 g) and standard error of prediction (SEP < 0.13 g/100 g) values were obtained for precision and accuracy. In addition, the ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD > 2.65) values was also calculated. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that NIRS could be utilised as a control procedure or as an alternative rapid and effective quantification method.

Perilla frutescens var. crispa 'Antisperill' has stronger anti-inflammatory effects than the original cultivar (red perilla), but studies on its bioactive compounds are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant compounds and activity of red perilla and 'Antisperill', as well as their processed products using freeze drying (FD) and microwave-assisted low temperature vacuum drying (MVD). Red perilla had higher antioxidant compounds and activities than 'Antisperill'. MVD showed significantly greater antioxidant properties than FD among the processed products. Isoegomaketone, studied for its anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties, was only found in 'Antisperill' and its processed products, with the highest content in 'Antisperill' MVD samples. This study highlights that 'Antisperill' contains various antioxidants, and MVD is the optimal drying method to preserve and enhance its antioxidant content. As a result, 'Antisperill' could potentially serve as a natural antioxidant with both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions.

Onions are typically consumed as the bulb, but the peel and root are discarded as by-products during processing. This study investigated the potential functional use of these by-products by analyzing the polyphenols, antioxidant compounds, and antioxidant activity contained in onions. In this study, the bulb, peel, and root of five onion cultivars ('Tank', 'Bomul', 'Gujji' 'Cobra', and 'Hongbanjang') harvested in Korea were investigated. Caffeic acid and quercetin were most abundant in the peel, whereas methyl gallate was the predominant polyphenol in the bulb. Both DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were higher in onion peel and root than in the bulb. These findings suggest that onion peel and roots, which are often discarded, have abundant antioxidant substances and excellent antioxidant activity. This study provides basic data for the future use of onion peel and roots as functional ingredients with high added value.

Here, we compared the chemical properties and antioxidant effects of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) and pink pepper (Schinus molle L.). Additionally, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities of pink pepper were measured to determine nutraceutical potential. Pink peppers from Brazil (PPB), India (PPI), and Sri Lanka (PPS) had higher Hunter a* (redness) values and lower L* (lightness) and b* (yellowness) values than black pepper from Vietnam (BPV). Fructose and glucose were detected in PPB, PPI, and PPS, but not in BPV. PPB, PPI, and PPS had greater 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid radical scavenging stabilities and higher total phenolic contents than BPV. BPV had higher levels of piperine than the pink peppers. Gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, epicatechin, and p-coumaric acid were detected only in the three pink peppers. PPB significantly suppressed lipopolysaccharide-induced reactive oxygen species production with increased Nrf2 translocation from cytosol to nucleus and heme oxygenase-1 expression. PPB and PPS significantly suppressed lipopolysaccharide-induced nitrite production and nitric oxide synthase expression by suppressing phosphorylation of p38 without affecting cell viability. Additionally, PPB and PPS significantly suppressed ultraviolet B-induced cyclooxygenase-2 expression by affecting the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 without cell cytotoxicity. These results suggest that pink pepper is a potential nutraceutical against oxidative and inflammatory stress.

This study investigated the antibacterial and in vitro antidementia effects of aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) leaf extracts from 3 cultivars (Nero, Viking, and McKenzie) collected at three different stages of maturity (young, harvest, and old). Bacillus cereus was susceptible to the old leaves of cultivars McKenzie and Nero, whereas Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria innocua were not inhibited by any of the extracts. Growth of B. cereus was inhibited by cv. McKenzie, resulting in increased lag time, whereas Nero had both an inhibitory and an inactivation effect. Except for cv. Viking at harvest stage, the acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity of aronia leaf extracts were about 60-70 and 70-80%, respectively. Therefore, aronia leaf is a natural resource with a potentially potent antidementia effect, besides antibacterial activity.

Five Korean blueberries (''Nelson'', ''Duke '', ''Bluejay '', ''Toro'', and ''Elliot '') were harvested at two maturity stages (unripe and ripe) to evaluate fruit quality and antioxidant activities. The Hunter L, a, and b color of ripe blueberries was lower than that of unripe fruit. Soluble solid concentration (SSC) and pH increased, and titratable acidity (TA) and firmness decreased as the blueberries matured. The ripe blueberry fruits showed a higher SSC/TA ratio than the unripe fruits. Although total anthocyanin, flavonoids, phenolics content, and antioxidant activity were higher in ripe blueberries than in unripe fruit, the unripe fruit had higher acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition activities than ripe fruit in all cultivars. Total antioxidant activity was highly correlated with total flavonoids and phenolics. The relationships between the total antioxidant activity and the AChE or BChE inhibitory activity are negative. There were several physicochemical quality and antioxidant activity differences in blueberries, depending on the cultivar and the maturity at harvest. Unripe fruits also contain potential health-promoting bioactive compounds as functional food ingredients.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the potential efficacy of purified porcine atelocollagen (PAC) for the management of refractory chronic pain due to suspected connective tissue damage. METHODS: Patients treated with PAC were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with chronic refractory pain, suspected to have originated from musculoskeletal damage or defects with the evidence of imaging studies were included. Pain intensity, using the 11-point numerical rating scale (NRS), was assessed before the procedure, and 1 month after the last procedure. RESULTS: Eighty-eight patients were finally included for investigation. The mean NRS score was decreased from 5.8 to 4.1 after 1 month of PAC injection (P < 0.001). No independent factor was reported to be directly related to the decrease in NRS score by more than half. CONCLUSIONS: Application of PAC may have potential as a treatment option for refractory chronic musculoskeletal pain. PAC might promote tissue recovery, act as a scaffold for repair, or directly reduce inflammation.

The present study investigated the fruits of aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) across different stages of maturity and analyzed their physicochemical properties, antioxidant compositions, and activities. The selected aronia cultivars ('Viking', 'McKenzie', and 'Kingstar K1' were categorized based on maturity into the immature stage (red tip), intermediary stage (red), and mature stage (dark purple). The key sugar components of aronia fruits were fructose, glucose, and sorbitol, while the main organic acid was found to be malic acid. The antioxidant content and activity of all three aronia cultivars showed significantly higher values for the red tip stage than the red or dark purple stages. However, the total anthocyanin content of aronia was the highest at the dark purple stage in three cultivars. The main polyphenols in aronia fruits were found to be catechol and chlorogenic acid, with a decreasing tendency as maturation progressed. As a result, the red tip stage of aronia fruits contains comparatively more abundant flavonoids, phenolic compounds and polyphenols than the dark purple stage, with higher antioxidant activity.

The current study compared the physicochemical properties, antioxidant compounds and activities, of unripe and ripe fruits of three cultivars (Seolhyang, Janghee, and Maehyang) of strawberries grown in Korea. As fruits matured, their soluble solids content increased and their organic acid content decreased. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) did not differ between Seolhyang and Maehyang fruits, regardless of maturity, whereas unripe Janghee fruits showed higher TPC and TFC than ripe fruits. Total anthocyanin content was higher in ripe fruits than in unripe fruits. For total antioxidant activity, ripe and unripe Seolhyang fruits showed no differences, whereas unripe Janghee fruits showed significantly higher activity than ripe fruits. TPC and TFC were highly correlated, as were DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. Thus, antioxidant contents and total antioxidant activities differed with variety and fruit ripeness at harvest. Unripe fruits show strong potential for use in functional food manufacturing.

Recently, the magnetorheological (MR) polishing process has been examined asa new ultra-precision polishing technology for micro parts in MEMS applications. In theMR polishing process, the magnetic force plays a dominant role. This method uses MRfluids which contains micro abrasives as a polishing media. The objective of the presentresearch is to shed light onto the material removal mechanism under various slurryconditions for polishing and to investigate surface characteristics, including shape analysisand surface roughness measurement, of spots obtained from the MR polishing process usingalumina abrasives. A series of basic experiments were first performed to determine theoptimum polishing conditions for BK7 glass using prepared slurries by changing the processparameters, such as wheel rotating speed and electric current. Using the obtained results,groove polishing was then performed and the results are investigated. Outstanding surfaceroughness of Ra=3.8nm was obtained on the BK7 glass specimen. The present resultshighlight the possibility of applying this polishing method to ultra-precision micro partsproduction, especially in MEMS applications.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of eggshell membrane hydrolysates (ESMH) on the anti-inflammatory, anti-wrinkle, anti-microbial activity, and moisture-protection for cosmetic use. Whole ESMH (before fractionation), and fraction I (>10 kDa), fraction II (3-10 kDa), and fraction III (<3 kDa) of the hydrolysates were assessed in this experiment. As lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and IFN-γ caused the inflammation on Raw264.7 cell, whole ESMH and fraction I showed to be effective in inhibiting the induction of cell inflammation depending on the concentration, and also showed outstanding effect to suppress the skin inflammation. Fraction I inhibited collagenase and elastase activities to a greater extent than the other fractions, while all fractions had antibiotic effects at concentrations of 10 mg/disc and 20 mg/disc. In addition, it showed the moisture protection effects of skin on the holding amount and losing amount of moisture in upper-inner arm of the human body with a relatively low loss rate in skin, which confirmed that the hydrolyzed fractions of ESM helps to form the superior protective layer of moisture. It was concluded that ESMH fractions with different molecular weights, especially the 10 kDa fraction, have anti-lipopolysaccharide, anti-IFN-γ-induced inflammation, anti- collagenase and elastase activities, and thus can be used as a cosmetic agent to protect skin.

Turmeric is a plant in the Zingiberaceae family which contains curcuminoids as anticancer agents and has been widely used as a main ingredient in curry powder. However, there is a lack of suitable high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) methods for reducing sample preparation time and peak resolution improvement of curcuminoids (bisdemethoxycurcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and curcumin). No significant differences in yield concentrations were observed after 60 min of heat-refluxed extraction (p < 0.05). Simultaneous chromatographic separation of all three curcuminoids achieved satisfactory results with a separation factor of 1.08 and a resolution factor of 3.39 with validation results in compliance with FDA guidelines. The expanded relative measurement uncertainty results 5.71-6.60 complied with CODEX draft. The method was successfully applied to the turmeric samples (n = 107, range 2.70-4.41 g/100 g, total curcuminoids 3.58 g/100 g). These results show that heat-refluxed extraction can be carried out easily with excellent precision and accuracy of total curcuminoids in turmeric samples.
