RESUMO

Although the reactivity of five-coordinate end-on superoxocopper(II) complexes, CuII(η1-O2•-), is dominated by hydrogen atom transfer, the majority of four-coordinate CuII(η1-O2•-) complexes published thus far display nucleophilic reactivity. To investigate the origin of this difference, we have developed a four-coordinate end-on superoxocopper(II) complex supported by a sterically encumbered bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand, dpb2-MeBPA (1), and compared its substrate reactivity with that of a five-coordinate end-on superoxocopper(II) complex ligated by a similarly substituted tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, dpb3-TMPA (2). Kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements and correlation of second-order rate constants (k2's) versus oxidation potentials (Eox) for a range of phenols indicates that the complex [CuII(η1-O2•-)(1)]+ reacts with phenols via a similar hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism to [CuII(η1-O2•-)(2)]+. However, [CuII(η1-O2•-)(1)]+ performs HAT much more quickly, with its k2 for reaction with 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol (MeO-ArOH) being >100 times greater. Furthermore, [CuII(η1-O2•-)(1)]+ can oxidize C-H bond substrates possessing stronger bonds than [CuII(η1-O2•-)(2)]+ is able to, and it reacts with N-methyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (MeAcrH2) approximately 200 times faster. The much greater facility for substrate oxidation displayed by [CuII(η1-O2•-)(1)]+ is attributed to it possessing higher inherent electrophilicity than [CuII(η1-O2•-)(2)]+, which is a direct consequence of its lower coordination number. These observations are of relevance to enzymes in which four-coordinate end-on superoxocopper(II) intermediates, rather than their five-coordinate congeners, are routinely invoked as the active oxidants responsible for substrate oxidation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and infected leg ulcers are at risk of amputation and postinterventional sepsis. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included patients with CLTI and infected leg ulcers who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT) between 2012 and 2021. RESULTS: The study included 712 patients, 286 (40.2%) of whom underwent amputation (minor, n = 212; major, n = 74). Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) were significantly more prevalent in amputees (36.4% vs 30.9%, p < 0.05). Patients with gram-positive bacteria (GPB) had a 4-year freedom from any amputation rate of 72% (95% CI 64-81%) compared to 52% (95% CI 42-66%) in patients with GNB identification (p < 0.05). Cox proportional regression analysis showed that GNB, male sex, mean Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) score, diabetes mellitus, and end-stage renal disease were independently and positively associated with amputation (p < 0.05). The mean WIfI score and end-stage renal disease were independently and positively associated with death from any cause (p < 0.05). Staphylococcus aureus or GNB, end-stage renal disease, and diabetes mellitus were independent risk factors for sepsis after EVT (p < 0.05). Inpatient-administered antibiotic regimes had significantly higher microbiological activity in cases of GPB identification compared to GNB identification (28% vs 9%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although the isolation of both GNB and S. aureus is a risk factor for sepsis following EVT, the isolation of GNB is independently associated with higher rates of amputation, demonstrating the importance of identifying pathogens to recognize patients at high risk.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Infections associated with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) are a multifactorial disease that leads to increased morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to analyze patient-, disease- and treatment-related characteristics including microbiological and bacterial spectrum according to survival status and to identify risk factors for 1- and 3-year mortality in patients with local and systemic CIED infection. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, we analyzed data from patients with CIED-related local or systemic infection undergoing successful transvenous lead extraction (TLE). Survival status as well as incidence and cause of rehospitalization were recorded. Microbiology and antibiotics used as first-line therapy were compared according to mortality. Independent risk factors for 1- and 3-year mortality were determined. RESULTS: Data from 243 Patients were analyzed. In-hospital mortality was 2.5%. Mortality rates at 30 days, 1- and 3 years were 4.1%, 18.1% and 30%, respectively. Seventy-four (30.5%) patients had systemic bacterial infection. Independent risk factors for 1-year mortality included age (OR 1.05 [1.01-1.10], p = 0.014), NT-proBNP at admission (OR 4.18 [1.81-9.65], p = 0.001), new onset or worsened tricuspid regurgitation after TLE (OR 6.04 [1.58-23.02], p = 0.009), and systemic infection (OR 2.76 [1.08-7.03], p = 0.034), whereas systemic infection was no longer an independent risk factor for 3-year mortality. Staphylococcus aureus was found in 18.1% of patients who survived and in 25% of those who died, p = 0.092. There was a high proportion of methicillin-resistant strains among coagulase-negative staphylococci (16.5%) compared to Staphylococcus aureus (1.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Staphylococci are the most common causative germs of CIED-infection with coagulase-negative staphylococci showing higher resistance rates to antibiotics. The independent risk factors for increased long-term mortality could contribute to individual risk stratification and well-founded treatment decisions in clinical routine. Especially the role of tricuspid regurgitation as a complication after TLE should be investigated in future studies.

RESUMO

Patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) are at risk of foot infections, which is associated with an increase in amputation rates. The use of antibiotics may lead to a higher incidence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in subsequent episodes of ischaemic foot infections (IFI). This retrospective single-centre cohort study included 130 patients with IFI undergoing endovascular revascularisation. Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the two most common pathogens, accounting for 20.5% and 10.8% of cases, respectively. The prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and multi-drug resistance did not significantly increase between episodes (10.2% vs. 13.4%, p = 0.42). In 59% of subsequent episodes, the identified pathogens were unrelated to the previous episode. However, the partial concordance of identified pathogens significantly increased to 66.7% when S. aureus was identified (p = 0.027). Subsequent episodes of IFI in the same patient are likely to differ in causative pathogens. However, in the case of S. aureus, the risk of reinfection, particularly with S. aureus, is increased. Multi-drug resistance does not appear to change between IFI episodes. Therefore, recommendations for empirical antimicrobial therapy should be based on local pathogen and resistance statistics without the need to broaden the spectrum of antibiotics in subsequent episodes.

RESUMO

One-electron oxidation of palladium(0) and platinum(0) bis(phosphine) complexes enables isolation of a homologous series of linear d9 metalloradicals of the form [M(PR3)2]+ (M = Pd, Pt; R = tBu, Ad), which are stable in 1,2-difluorobenzene (DFB) solution for >1 day at room temperature when partnered with the weakly coordinating [BArF4]- (ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) counterion. The metalloradicals exhibit reduced stability in THF, decreasing in the order palladium(I) > platinum(I) and PAd3 > PtBu3, especially in the case of [Pt(PtBu3)2]+, which is converted into a 1:1 mixture of the platinum(II) complexes [Pt(PtBu2CMe2CH2)(PtBu3)]+ and [Pt(PtBu3)2H]+ upon dissolution at room temperature. Cyclometalation of [Pt(PtBu3)2]+ can also be induced by reaction with the 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxyl radical in DFB, and a common radical rebound mechanism involving carbon-to-metal H-atom transfer and formation of an intermediate platinum(III) hydride complex, [Pt(PtBu2CMe2CH2)H(PtBu3)]+, has been substantiated by computational analysis. Radical C-H bond oxidative addition is correlated with the resulting MII-H bond dissociation energy (M = Pt > Pd), and reactions of the metalloradicals with 9,10-dihydroanthracene in DFB at room temperature provide experimental evidence for the proposed C-H bond activation manifold in the case of platinum, although conversion into platinum(II) hydride derivatives is considerably faster for [Pt(PtBu3)2]+ (t1/2 = 1.2 h) than [Pt(PAd3)2]+ (t1/2 ∼ 40 days).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTI) in men differ relevantly to women by their pathogens. Gram-positive uropathogens play a relevant role in UTI in men. In this study, we aimed to analyze the epidemiology of Enterococcus faecalis in UTI in male outpatients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational multicenter study during 2015 to 2020 consisting of urine samples of 99,415 adult male outpatients sent from 6,749 outpatient practices from Germany. Proportions were compared using the z-Test and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using the Clopper-Pearson method. RESULTS: E. faecalis is the 2nd most frequent bacteria (16%) detected in suspected UTI in male outpatients. Young men are predominantly at risk (17%) for isolation of E. faecalis in suspected UTI. In polymicrobial infections E. faecalis is isolated in 47% of all suspected UTI in men. Recurrency of suspected UTI is significantly more frequent when E. faecalis is isolated compared to Escherichia coli (22% vs 26%; p < .001). Recurrency rates of E. faecalis associated UTI increases by age from 12% (18-29 years) to 28% ([Formula: see text] 70 years); p < .001. Congruently the resistance of E. faecalis against ciprofloxacin increases by age from 22% (18-29 years; 2019) to 37% ([Formula: see text] 70 years; 2019); p < .001. CONCLUSIONS: E. faecalis is frequently isolated in suspected UTI in male patients. Consequently, Nitrate-sticks results cannot be recommended to exclude UTI in men. The empirical use of ciprofloxacin in young adults can be reasonable. Frequent recurrences in E. faecalis associated suspected UTI emphasizes the importance of microbiological pathogen identification and susceptibility testing in men suffering from UTI.

RESUMO

BackgroundOlder age is frequently cited as a risk factor for healthcare-associated infections in general, and surgical site infections (SSIs) specifically.AimWe aimed to investigate the correlation between age and SSI occurrence.MethodsData on total hip replacement (THR) and total knee replacement (TKR) surgeries and resulting SSIs documented in the German national surveillance network from a 10-year period from 2009 to 2018 were selected for analysis. SSI rates and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) were calculated and a multivariable analysis to determine risk factors for SSI occurrence was conducted.ResultsA total of 418,312 THR procedures resulting in 3,231 SSIs, and 286,074 TKR procedures with 1,288 SSIs were included in the analyses. For THR, SSI rates were higher in older age groups when compared with the reference age group of 61-65 years. A significantly higher risk was observed in the 76-80 years age group (AOR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.05-1.4). An age of ≤ 50 years was associated with a significantly lower SSI risk (AOR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.52-0.8). For TKR, a similar correlation was observed, with the exception of the youngest age group (≤ 52 years), which was shown to have an SSI risk equal to that of the knee prosthesis reference age group (78-82 years).ConclusionA strong correlation between increasing age and SSI occurrence was observed for both procedure types. The results of our analyses provide a basis to consider future targeted SSI prevention measures for different age groups.

RESUMO

Arylmethyl anions allow alkali-metals to bind in a σ-fashion to the lateral carbanionic centre or a π-fashion to the aryl ring or in between these extremities, with the trend towards π bonding increasing on descending group 1. Here we review known alkali metal structures of diphenylmethane, fluorene, 2-benzylpyridine and 4-benzylpyridine. Next, we synthesise Li, Na, K monomers of these diarylmethyls using polydentate donors PMDETA or Me6 TREN to remove competing oligomerizing interactions, studying the effect that two aromatic rings has on negative charge (de)localisation via NMR, X-ray crystallographic and DFT studies. Diphenylmethyl and fluorenyl anions maintain C(H)-M interactions regardless of alkali-metal, although the adjacent arene carbons engage in interactions with larger alkali-metals. Introducing a nitrogen atom into the ring (at the 2- or 4-position) encourages relocalisation of negative charge away from the deprotonated carbon and onto nitrogen. Phenyl(2-pyridyl)methyl moves from an enamide formation at one extremity (lithium) to an aza-allyl formation at the other extremity (potassium), while C- or N-coordination modes become energetically viable for Na and K phenyl(4-pyridyl)methyl complexes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate antimicrobial use and primary and nosocomial infections in hospitalized COVID-19 patients to provide data for guidance of antimicrobial therapy. METHODS: Prospective observational cohort study conducted at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, including patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2-infection between March and November 2020. RESULTS: 309 patients were included, 231 directly admitted and 78 transferred from other centres. Antimicrobial therapy was initiated in 62/231 (26.8%) of directly admitted and in 44/78 (56.4%) of transferred patients. The rate of microbiologically confirmed primary co-infections was 4.8% (11/231). Although elevated in most COVID-19 patients, C-reactive protein and procalcitonin levels were higher in patients with primary co-infections than in those without (median CRP 110 mg/l, IQR 51-222 vs. 36, IQR 11-101, respectively; p < 0.0001). Nosocomial bloodstream and respiratory infections occurred in 47/309 (15.2%) and 91/309 (29.4%) of patients, respectively, and were associated with need for invasive mechanical ventilation (OR 45.6 95%CI 13.7-151.8 and 104.6 95%CI 41.5-263.5, respectively), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (OR 14.3 95%CI 6.5-31.5 and 16.5 95%CI 6.5-41.6, respectively), and haemodialysis (OR 31.4 95%CI 13.9-71.2 and OR 22.3 95%CI 11.2-44.2, respectively). The event of any nosocomial infection was significantly associated with in-hospital death (33/99 (33.3%) with nosocomial infection vs. 23/210 (10.9%) without, OR 4.1 95%CI 2.2-7.3). CONCLUSIONS: Primary co-infections are rare, yet antimicrobial use was frequent, mostly based on clinical worsening and elevated inflammation markers without clear evidence for co-infection. More reliable diagnostic prospects may help to reduce overtreatment. Rates of nosocomial infections are substantial in severely ill patients on organ support and associated with worse patient outcome.

RESUMO

Stimuli responsive anion transport is becoming an important aspect of supramolecular anion recognition chemistry. Herein, we report the synthesis of a family of anion receptors that incorporate a new anion binding motif, amidosquaramides. We show using experimental and computational methods that these receptors have pKa values close to physiological pH but also display intramolecular H-bonding interactions that affect anion recognition. Moreover, moderate activity in a Cl-/NO3- exchange assay is observed at physiological pH that can be effectively 'switched on' when repeated under acidic conditions. The reported findings provide synthetic methods that can be used for the construction of more complex squaramide based anion receptors and also provide insight into the importance of conformational analysis when considering receptor design.

RESUMO

BackgroundEvidence on the distribution of bacteria and therapy recommendations in male outpatients with urinary tract infections (UTI) remains insufficient.AimWe aimed to report frequency distributions and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of bacteria causing UTI in men and to identify risk factors for resistance of Escherichia coli against trimethoprim (TMP) and ciprofloxacin (CIP).MethodsWe conducted a retrospective observational study using routinely collected midstream urine specimens from 102,736 adult male outpatients sent from 6,749 outpatient practices to nine collaborating laboratories from all major regions in Germany between 2015 and 2020. Resistance in E. coli was predicted using logistic regression.ResultsThe three most frequent bacteria were E. coli (38.4%), Enterococcus faecalis (16.5%) and Proteus mirabilis (9.3%). Resistance of E. coli against amoxicillin (45.7%), TMP (26.6%) and CIP (19.8%) was common. Multiple drug resistance was high (22.9%). Resistance against fosfomycin (0.9%) and nitrofurantoin (1.9%) was low. Resistance of En. faecalis against CIP was high (29.3%). Isolates of P. mirabilis revealed high resistance against TMP (41.3%) and CIP (16.6%). The CIP and TMP resistance was significantly higher among bacteria derived from recurrent UTI (p < 0.05). Age ≥ 90 years, recurrent UTI and regions East and South were independently associated with AMR of E. coli against TMP and CIP (p < 0.05).ConclusionThe most frequent UTI-causing pathogens showed highresistance against TMP and CIP, empirical therapy is therefore likely to fail. Apart from intrinsically resistant pathogens, susceptibility to fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin remains sufficient. Therefore, they remain an additional option for empirical treatment of uncomplicated UTI in men.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic joints are at risk of becoming infected during an episode of bacteremia, especially during Staphylocococcus aureus bacteremia. However, it is unclear how often asymptomatic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) occurs, and whether additional diagnostics should be considered. METHODS: In this multicenter study, we retrospectively analyzed a cohort of patients with a late acute (hematogenous) PJI between 2005-2015 who had concomitant prosthetic joints in situ. Patients without at least 1 year of follow-up were excluded. RESULTS: We included 91 patients with a hematogenous PJI and 108 concomitant prosthetic joints. The incident PJI was most frequently caused by Staphylococcus aureus (43%), followed by streptococci (26%) and Gram-negative rods (18%). Of 108 concomitant prosthetic joints, 13 were symptomatic, of which 10 were subsequently diagnosed as a second PJI. Of the 95 asymptomatic prosthetic joints, 1 PJI developed during the follow-up period and was classified as a "missed" PJI at the time of bacteremia with S. aureus (1.1%). Infected prosthetic joints were younger than the noninfected ones in 67% of cases, and prosthetic knees were affected more often than prosthetic hips (78%). CONCLUSIONS: During an episode of hematogenous PJI, concomitant asymptomatic prosthetic joints have a very low risk of being infected, and additional diagnostic work-up for these joints is not necessary.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium species are common pathogens in periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). These infections are often treated with ß-lactams or clindamycin as monotherapy, or in combination with rifampin. Clinical evidence supporting the value of adding rifampin for treatment of Cutibacterium PJI is lacking. METHODS: In this multicenter retrospective study, we evaluated patients with Cutibacterium PJI and a minimal follow-up of 12 months. The primary endpoint was clinical success, defined by the absence of infection relapse or new infection. We used Fisher's exact tests and Cox proportional hazards models to analyze the effect of rifampin and other factors on clinical success after PJI. RESULTS: We included 187 patients (72.2% male, median age 67 years) with a median follow-up of 36 months. The surgical intervention was a 2-stage exchange in 95 (50.8%), 1-stage exchange in 51 (27.3%), debridement and implant retention (DAIR) in 34 (18.2%), and explantation without reimplantation in 7 (3.7%) patients. Rifampin was included in the antibiotic regimen in 81 (43.3%) cases. Infection relapse occurred in 28 (15.0%), and new infection in 13 (7.0%) cases. In the time-to-event analysis, DAIR (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 2.15, P = .03) and antibiotic treatment over 6 weeks (adjusted HR = 0.29, P = .0002) significantly influenced treatment failure. We observed a tentative evidence for a beneficial effect of adding rifampin to the antibiotic treatment-though not statistically significant for treatment failure (adjusted HR = 0.5, P = .07) and not for relapses (adjusted HR = 0.5, P = .10). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that a rifampin combination is not markedly superior in Cutibacterium PJI, but a dedicated prospective multicenter study is needed.

RESUMO

Instability of end-on superoxocopper(II) complexes, with respect to conversion to peroxo-bridged dicopper(II) complexes, has largely constrained their study to very low temperatures. This limits their kinetic capacity to oxidize substrates. In response, we have developed a series of bulky ligands, Ar3-TMPA (Ar = tpb, dpb, dtbpb), and used them to support copper(I) complexes that react with O2 to yield [CuII(η1-O2•-)(Ar3-TMPA)]+ species, which are stable against dimerization at all temperatures. Binding of O2 saturates at subambient temperatures and can be reversed by warming. The onset of oxygenation for the Ar = tpb and dpb systems is observed at 25 °C, and all three [CuII(η1-O2•-)(Ar3-TMPA)]+ complexes are stable against self-decay at temperatures of ≤-20 °C. This provides a wide temperature window for study of these complexes, which was exploited by performing extensive reaction kinetics measurements for [CuII(η1-O2•-)(tpb3-TMPA)]+ using a broad range of O-H, N-H, and C-H bond substrates. This includes correlation of second order rate constants (k2) versus oxidation potentials (Eox) for a range of phenols, construction of Eyring plots, and temperature-dependent kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements. The data obtained indicate that reaction with all substrates proceeds via H atom transfer (HAT), reaction with the phenols proceeds with significant charge transfer, and full tunneling of both H and D atoms occurs in the case of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine and 4-methoxy-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Oxidation of C-H bonds proved to be kinetically challenging, and whereas [CuII(η1-O2•-)(tpb3-TMPA)]+ can oxidize moderately strong O-H and N-H bonds, it is only able to oxidize very weak C-H bonds.

RESUMO

Using solid-state molecular organometallic (SMOM) techniques, in particular solid/gas single-crystal to single-crystal reactivity, a series of σ-alkane complexes of the general formula [Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)(ηn:ηm-alkane)][BArF4] have been prepared (alkane = propane, 2-methylbutane, hexane, 3-methylpentane; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3). These new complexes have been characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and DFT computational techniques and present a variety of Rh(I)···H-C binding motifs at the metal coordination site: 1,2-η2:η2 (2-methylbutane), 1,3-η2:η2 (propane), 2,4-η2:η2 (hexane), and 1,4-η1:η2 (3-methylpentane). For the linear alkanes propane and hexane, some additional Rh(I)···H-C interactions with the geminal C-H bonds are also evident. The stability of these complexes with respect to alkane loss in the solid state varies with the identity of the alkane: from propane that decomposes rapidly at 295 K to 2-methylbutane that is stable and instead undergoes an acceptorless dehydrogenation to form a bound alkene complex. In each case the alkane sits in a binding pocket defined by the {Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)}+ fragment and the surrounding array of [BArF4]- anions. For the propane complex, a small alkane binding energy, driven in part by a lack of stabilizing short contacts with the surrounding anions, correlates with the fleeting stability of this species. 2-Methylbutane forms more short contacts within the binding pocket, and as a result the complex is considerably more stable. However, the complex of the larger 3-methylpentane ligand shows lower stability. Empirically, there therefore appears to be an optimal fit between the size and shape of the alkane and overall stability. Such observations are related to guest/host interactions in solution supramolecular chemistry and the holistic role of 1°, 2°, and 3° environments in metalloenzymes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene plays a crucial role in the transmission of pathogens and the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. In 2007, a voluntary national electronic surveillance tool for the documentation of consumption of alcohol-based hand rub (AHC) was introduced as a surrogate for hand hygiene compliance (HAND-KISS) and for the provision of benchmark data as feedback. The aim of the study was to determine the trend in alcohol-based hand rub consumption between 2007 and 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cohort study, AHC and patient days (PD) were documented on every ward in participating hospitals by trained local staff. Data was collected and validated in HAND-KISS. Intensive care units (ICU), intermediate care units (IMC), and regular wards (RW) that provided data during the study period between 2007 until 2018 were included into the study. RESULTS: In 2018, 75.2% of acute care hospitals in Germany (n = 1.460) participated. On ICUs (n = 1998) mean AHC increased 1.74 fold (95%CI 1.71, 1.76; p < .0001) from 79.2 ml/PD to 137.4 ml/PD. On IMCs (n = 475) AHC increased 1.69 fold (95%CI 1.60, 1.79; p < .0001) from 41.4 ml/PD to 70.6 ml /PD..On RWs (n = 14,857) AHC was 19.0 ml/PD in 2007 and increased 1.71 fold (95%CI 1.70, 1.73; p < .0001) to 32.6 ml/PD in 2018. CONCLUSIONS: AHC in German hospitals increased on all types of wards during the past 12 years. Surveillance of AHC is widely established in German hospitals. Large differences among medical specialties exist and warrant further investigation.

RESUMO

Despite their promising metal-ligand cooperative reactivity, PCcarbene P pincer ligands are rarely reported for first-row transition-metal centres. Using a dehydration methodology, we report access to an Fe0 PCcarbene P pincer complex (1) that proceeds via an isolated α-hydroxylalkyl hydrido complex (3). Reversible carbonyl migration to the carbene position in 1 is found to allow coordination chemistry and E-H bond addition (E=H, B, Cl) across the iron-carbene linkage, representing a unique mechanism for metal-ligand cooperativity. The PCcarbene P pincer ligand is also found to stabilize formal FeII , FeI , and Fe-I oxidation states, as demonstrated with synthesis and characterization of the complexes [11-X][BArF 20 ] (X=Br, I), 12, and K[13]. Compound K[13] is found to be highly reactive, and abstracts hydrogen from a range of aliphatic C-H sources. Computational analysis by DFT suggests that the formal FeI and Fe-I complexes contain significant carbene radical character. The ability of the PCcarbene P ligand scaffold to partake in metal-ligand cooperativity and to support a range of iron oxidation states renders it as potentially useful in many catalytic applications.

RESUMO

Dialumenes are neutral AlI compounds with Al=Al multiple bonds. We report the isolation of an amidophosphine-supported dialumene. Our X-ray crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational DFT analyses reveal a long and extreme trans-bent Al=Al bond with a low dissociation energy and bond order. In solution, the dialumene can dissociate into monomeric AlI species. Reactivity studies reveal two modes of reaction: as dialumene or as aluminyl monomers.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional electronic spectra (2DES) provide unique ways to track the energy transfer dynamics in light-harvesting complexes. The interpretation of the peaks and structures found in experimentally recorded 2DES is often not straightforward, since several processes are imaged simultaneously. The choice of specific pulse polarization sequences helps to disentangle the sometimes convoluted spectra, but brings along other disturbances. We show by detailed theoretical calculations how 2DES of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex are affected by rotational and conformational disorder of the chromophores.

RESUMO

The synthesis and organometallic chemistry of rhodium(I) complex [Rh(CNC-Me)(SOMe2)][BArF 4], featuring NHC-based pincer and labile dimethyl sulfoxide ligands, is reported. This complex reacts with biphenylene and chlorobenzene to afford products resulting from selective C-C and C-Cl bond activation, [Rh(CNC-Me)(2,2'-biphenyl)(OSMe2)][BArF 4] and [Rh(CNC-Me)(Ph)Cl(OSMe2)][BArF 4], respectively. A detailed DFT-based computational analysis indicates that C-H bond oxidative addition of these substrates is kinetically competitive, but in all cases endergonic: contrasting the large thermodynamic driving force calculated for insertion of the metal into the C-C and C-Cl bonds, respectively. Under equivalent conditions the substrates are not activated by the phosphine-based pincer complex [Rh(PNP-iPr)(SOMe2)][BArF 4].
