RESUMO

The Revised Behavior Problem Checklist (RBPC) was completed by parents and teachers for 105 child psychiatry outpatient boys aged 6 to 12 years. In addition, DSM-III diagnoses were determined independent of checklist results, and the children were divided into major diagnostic groups of externalizing, internalizing, and mixed disorders. Combined parent and teacher ratings proved more effective than separate ratings in distinguishing the externalizing and mixed groups from the internalizing group on the RBPC externalizing factors. The overall classification of individual boys with discriminant function analysis increased from 72% to 83% when the ratings of both parents, rather than one parent, were combined with teacher ratings. Enhancing diagnostic accuracy of type of psychiatric disorder by using combined parent and teacher behavior checklist ratings is discussed.

RESUMO

The purposes of this study were to 1) measure peak torques generated by knee extensors and flexors in hemophilia patients; 2) describe flexor to extensor; 3) record the point in the arc of motion where peak torque was achieved; 4) correlate results with age, degree of hemophilic arthropathy, and presence of flexion contracture; and 5) compare results with reports on healthy subjects. Forty-seven patients (94 knees) with severe hemophilia were tested with a Cybex II isokinetic dynamometer at a speed of 30 degrees per second. Height, weight, thigh girths, and passive knee range of motion were recorded. Standing roentgenograms of the knee were evaluated to assess degree of arthropathy. Subjects were divided into groups by age and degree of arthropathy. Descriptive statistics were generated for all groups. Average peak extensor and flexor torque was similar for adolescents and adults. Increasing degree of arthropathy was associated with significant decreases in both extensor and flexor torque, an increase in flexor to extensor ratios and increasing knee flexion contractures. Across all groups, flexor to extensor ratios were abnormally high, particularly in patients with type IV arthropathy. The point in arc of motion where peak torques occurred did not differ significantly across groups and compared favorably with measures reported in the literature. For all ages, mean peak extensor and flexor torques were less than values reported in the literature for healthy subjects. Results of this study demonstrate the profound decrease in torque produced by knee musculature in hemophilia patients, particularly those with more severe arthropathy and knee flexion deformity.

RESUMO

A modified isokinetic strengthening program for the knee flexors and extensors was evaluated in 32 patients with severe hemophilia. The program was effective in significantly strengthening the knee flexors and extensors; it did not increase the number of knee hemarthroses; and it could be done at home without special equipment. The greater increases in extensor and flexor strength among adolescents and adults were associated with less severe arthropathy, a 1 cm increase in thigh girth, and a greater number of days on which the exercises were done.

RESUMO

This study compared the difference in tensile bond strength between the composite resin veneer and the cast Ni-Cr disk when different bead adhesives were used to make the laboratory patterns. Visio-Gem, cyanoacrylate, and shellac were the adhesives tested. Fifty-six composite resin bonded Ni-Cr disks were prepared and tested to tensile failure with the Kemper-Kilian device. All tested samples showed a complex failure pattern. The results showed that the mean tensile bond strength of the cyanoacrylate group was significantly higher than the other two groups. No significant difference in the mean tensile bond strength was observed between the Visio-Gem and shellac groups. The higher tensile bond strength in the cyanoacrylate group is thought to be attributed to the low rheological property of the adhesive that allowed greater exposure of the bead for retention. Using different adhesives in the fabrication of composite resin veneered-castings may affect the bond strength in the composite resin-metal interface.

RESUMO

While esthetics has always been important, the introduction of new esthetic products, simplified techniques, and increased patient awareness have expanded the public demand for esthetic dentistry. This article will present information on three components necessary to obtain an accurate shade match.
