Fermentable oligo-, di- and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) comprise several previously unrelated carbohydrates, such as fructans, fructo-oligosaccharides, galacto-oligosaccharides, fructose (in excess of glucose), mannitol and sorbitol, and among others. For many patients with gastro-intestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, the ingestion of FODMAP triggers symptoms and causes discomfort. Among the main contributors to the dietary FODMAP intake are baking products, in particular bread as a major global staple food. This is primarily due to the fructan content of the cereal flours, but also process induced accumulation of FODMAP is possible. To provide low-FODMAP baking products, researchers have investigated various approaches, such as bio-process reduction by yeast, lactic acid bacteria, germination of the raw material or the use of exogenous enzymes. In addition, the selection of appropriate ingredients, which are either naturally or after pretreatment suitable for low-FODMAP products, is discussed. The sensory and nutritional quality of low-FODMAP baking products is another issue, that is addressed, with particular focus on providing sufficient dietary fiber intake. Based on this information, the current state of low-FODMAP baking and future research necessities, to establish practical strategies for low-FODMAP products, are evaluated in this article.

Glutathione (L-γ-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine, GSH) is a tripeptide synthesized through consecutive enzymatic reactions. Among its several metabolic functions in cells, the main one is the potential to act as an endogenous antioxidant agent. GSH has been the focus of numerous studies not only due to its role in the redox status of biological systems but also due to its biotechnological characteristics. GSH is usually obtained by fermentation and shows a variety of applications by the pharmaceutical and food industry. Therefore, the search for new strategies to improve the production of GSH during fermentation is crucial. This mini review brings together recent papers regarding the principal parameters of the biotechnological production of GSH by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this context, aspects, such as the medium composition (amino acids, alternative raw materials) and the use of technological approaches (control of osmotic and pressure conditions, magnetic field (MF) application, fed-batch process) were considered, along with genetic engineering knowledge, trends, and challenges in viable GSH production. KEY POINTS: • Saccharomyces cerevisiae has shown potential for glutathione production. • Improved technological approaches increases glutathione production. • Genetic engineering in Saccharomyces cerevisiae improves glutathione production.

Improving ecosystem quality and stability is one of the urgent tasks of national ecological environment construction. However, the ecological theory of ecosystem quality and stability has not been well clarified. Based on the summary of influencing factors and interaction between ecosystem quality and stability, we discussed the ecolo-gical theory on the evolution of ecosystem quality and stability from the perspectives of self-organization of biological agglomeration and structure nesting, correlation of ecological elements and coupling of ecological processes, ecosystem integrity and function emergence, ecological service spillover and efficiency tradeoff, synergy and interactions between resource supply capacity and environmental suitability, as well as interactions between spontaneous change and human activities. Technologies approaches and management strategies were proposed from the aspects of ecosystem macro-pattern adjustment, protected natural areas system construction, regional complex ecosystem comprehensive management, degraded ecosystem restoration, damaged ecosystem reestablishment, typical ecosystem process management.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementia which has been affected to more the 44 million people globally. It is distinguished by gradually deteriorating memory and other cognitive abilities that precede dementia. Present treatment of AD mainly focuses on symptomatic slowing the evolution of the disease which is associated with numerous side effects such as dizziness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, heart attack, and stroke etc. Henceforth; there is urgent need to identify the alternative treatment for management of AD. Herbal medicines have been used from long time to treat AD. One of such leading Phyto molecule is Naringin. It showed promising results against AD but suffers from poor bioavailability and require in high dose to cross the blood brain barrier. Objectives: The main objectives of proposed work are to increase the bioavailability of naringin in brain by developing Nano-suspension and preclinical evaluation of neuroprotective effect of Naringin Nano-suspension (NNS) against Scopolamine induced Alzheimer's disease in rats. Methods: The present study deals with the development, characterization of NNSand to evaluate neuroprotective effect of NNS. Nanoparticles of drug were formed by using PLGA polymer and optimized by using 32 factorial design. Optimized batch was further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Further the effectiveness of NNS was preclinically investigated by performing AOTstudy as per OECD guideline 420. AD induced Albino Wistar Rats were treated with NNS orally for 14 days and then evaluated for parameters like Gross examination of brain, Relative brain weight determination, behavioural parameters, neuro-inflammatory parameters and immune-histology. Results: Optimization was carried out to study the effect of polymer concentration and number of HPH cycles on Particle size, Poly dispersity index (PDI) and % entrapment efficiency. Desirability search approach was used to select the optimized formulation. Based on the selection criteria, batch F6 having 357.6 ± 05 nm particle size, 0.168 ± 0.04 PDI and 91 ± 2% EE was selected as optimized batch. SEM analysis showed spherical morphology and XRD confirmed the molecular dispersion. Pre-treatment with NNS showed neuroprotective activity basedon results of behavioural studies, biochemical estimation, neuroinflammatory parameters and immunohistochemistry evaluations. Conclusion: As NNS showed significant neuroprotective and anti-neuro-inflammatory effect, this study opens up new ways to exploit Naringin for various therapeutic and restorative purposes.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been confirmed to play a crucial role in various biological processes across several species. Though many efforts have been devoted to the expansion of the lncRNAs landscape, much about lncRNAs is still unknown due to their great complexity. The development of high-throughput technologies and the constantly improved bioinformatic methods have resulted in a rapid expansion of lncRNA research and relevant databases. In this review, we introduced genome-wide research of lncRNAs in three parts: (i) novel lncRNA identification by high-throughput sequencing and computational pipelines; (ii) functional characterization of lncRNAs by expression atlas profiling, genome-scale screening, and the research of cancer-related lncRNAs; (iii) mechanism research by large-scale experimental technologies and computational analysis. Besides, primary experimental methods and bioinformatic pipelines related to these three parts are summarized. This review aimed to provide a comprehensive and systemic overview of lncRNA genome-wide research strategies and indicate a genome-wide lncRNA research system.

BACKGROUND: The nursing role significantly changed following reforms in the nurse training process. Nowadays, nurses are increasingly trained to promote and improve the quality of clinical practice and to provide support in the assistance of patients and communities. Opportunities and threats are emerging as a consequence of the introduction of new disruptive technologies in public health, which requires the health care staff to develop new digital skills. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to review and define the role of nurses and the skills they are asked to master in terms of new methodological approaches and digital knowledge in a continuously evolving health care scenario that relies increasingly more on technology and digital solutions. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted using a thematic summary of previous studies. Authors collected publications through a cross-database search (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar) related to new telemedicine approaches impacting the nurses' role, considering the time span of 2011-2021 and therefore including experiences and publications related to the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: The assessment was completed between April and July 2021. After a cross-database search, authors reviewed a selection of 60 studies. The results obtained were organized into 5 emerging macro areas: (1) leadership (nurses are expected to show leadership capabilities when introducing new technologies in health care practices, considering their pivotal role in coordinating various professional figures and the patient), (2) soft skills (new communication skills, adaptiveness, and problem solving are needed to adapt the interaction to the level of digital skills and digital knowledge of the patient), (3) training (specific subjects need to be added to nursing training to boost the adoption of new communication and technological skills, enabling health care professionals to largely and effectively use new digital tools), (4) remote management of COVID-19 or chronic patients during the pandemic (a role that has proved to be fundamental is the community and family nurse and health care systems are adopting novel assistance models to support patients at home and to enable decentralization of services from hospitals to the territory), and (5) management of interpersonal relationships with patients through telemedicine (a person-centered approach with an open and sensitive attitude seems to be even more important in the framework of telemedicine where a face-to-face session is not possible and therefore nonverbal indicators are more problematic to be noticed). CONCLUSIONS: Further advancing nurses' readiness in adopting telemedicine requires an integrated approach, including combination of technical knowledge, management abilities, soft skills, and communication skills. This scoping review provides a wide-ranging and general-albeit valuable-starting point to identify these core competences and better understand their implications in terms of present and future health care professionals' roles.

Since 2015, the discovery of colistin resistance genes has been limited to the characterization of new mobile colistin resistance (mcr) gene variants. However, given the complexity of the mechanisms involved, there are many colistin-resistant bacterial strains whose mechanism remains unknown and whose exploitation requires complementary technologies. In this review, through the history of colistin, we underline the methods used over the last decades, both old and recent, to facilitate the discovery of the main colistin resistance mechanisms and how new technological approaches may help to improve the rapid and efficient exploration of new target genes. To accomplish this, a systematic search was carried out via PubMed and Google Scholar on published data concerning polymyxin resistance from 1950 to 2020 using terms most related to colistin. This review first explores the history of the discovery of the mechanisms of action and resistance to colistin, based on the technologies deployed. Then we focus on the most advanced technologies used, such as MALDI-TOF-MS, high throughput sequencing or the genetic toolbox. Finally, we outline promising new approaches, such as omics tools and CRISPR-Cas9, as well as the challenges they face. Much has been achieved since the discovery of polymyxins, through several innovative technologies. Nevertheless, colistin resistance mechanisms remains very complex.

The development of functional foods containing probiotics has experienced a great boom in the last years, reflected by the increasing number of novel products available at the market, as well as by the well-documented extensive research, going beyond the traditional fermented dairy foods. However, to safe arrive to their target, the gut, microorganisms contained in food products have to overcome different barriers, both technological and physiological. Food processing might cause different types of damages on beneficial bacteria, which finally lead to a decrease of viability. In addition, once ingested, and before arriving to the gut, microorganisms are exposed to other food constituents, low pH and digestive juices, all of them constituting detrimental environments that can decrease their viability. For this reason, this review offers an updated state of the art on the microorganisms' response to the factors affecting their survival during drying techniques, storage and rehydration. Current strategies to overcome detrimental processing effects on bacterial viability are also reviewed, as well as the effect of food matrices on bacterial protection during food manufacturing and storage. The effect of probiotic microorganisms on the gut, and in particular on the intestinal microbiota is an issue of increasing interest in the last decades, and thus, special emphasis was put it on.
