RESUMO

Acanthamoeba, a widely distributed free-living amoeba found in various environments, is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for causing Acanthamoeba keratitis, a condition that may lead to blindness. However, identifying the pathogenicity of Acanthamoeba is challenging due to its complex life cycle, ability to adapt to different environments, variable virulence factors, and intricate interactions with the host immune system. Additionally, the development of an effective model for studying Acanthamoeba pathogenicity is limited, hindering a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying its virulence and host interactions. The aim of this study was to develop an ex vivo model for Acanthamoeba infection using porcine eyeballs and to evaluate the pathogenicity of the Acanthamoeba isolates. Based on slit lamp and biopsy analysis, the developed ex vivo model is capable of successfully infecting Acanthamoeba within 3 days. Histopathological staining revealed that clinical isolates of Acanthamoeba exhibited greater corneal stroma destruction and invasion in this model than environmental isolates. Our results highlight the importance of an ex vivo porcine eye model in elucidating the pathogenesis of Acanthamoeba infection and its potential implications for understanding and managing Acanthamoeba-related ocular diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide. Substantial research has illuminated the intricate interplay between microorganisms and human health, revealing their role in disease regulation. Trichomonads is a flagellated protozoan in the human cavity and have been previously identified as a pathogen associated with pneumonia, contributing to tissue chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis. METHODS: Nested polymerase chain reaction methods were employed to scrutinize the prevalence of trichomonads in the bronchovesicular fluid of patients diagnosed with lung cancer. Subsequently, the influence of Trichomonas tenax invasion on lung cancer cells was elucidated through proliferation assays, migration assays, and transcription analysis. RESULTS: Bronchoalveolar fluid samples from lung cancer patients yielded positive nested PCR results for eight out of twenty-seven samples. Seven of these samples were identified as Trichomonas tenax, while one was identified as Tetratrichomonas spp. Our findings revealed a significant upregulation of pathways associated with carcinogenesis, including cellular proliferation, migration, and drug resistance, in response to T. tenax invasion. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the importance of recognizing the presence of trichomonads and the influence of T. tenax invasion on host responses to respiratory diseases. The identified pathways implicated in cancer development may pave the way for developing targeted treatment strategies for pulmonary diseases. These findings hold promise for informing and improving the precision of therapeutic interventions in the context of pulmonary ailments.

Multivalent ligands hold promise for enhancing avidity and selectivity to simultaneously target multimeric proteins, as well as potentially modulating receptor signaling in pharmaceutical applications. Essential for these manipulations are nanosized scaffolds that precisely control ligand display patterns, which can be achieved by using polyproline oligo-helix macrocyclic nanoscaffolds via selective binding to protein oligomers and cell surface receptors. This work focuses on synthesis and structural characterization of different-sized polyproline tri-helix macrocyclic (PP3M) scaffolds. Through combined analysis of circular dichroism (CD), small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, and molecular modeling, a non-coplanar tri-helix loop structure with partially crossover helix ends is elucidated. This structural model aligns well with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) imaging. The present work enhances the precision of nanoscale organic synthesis, offering prospects for controlled ligand positioning on scaffolds. This advancement paves the way for further applications in nanomedicine through selective protein interaction, manipulation of cell surface receptor functions, and developments of more complex polyproline-based nanostructures.

Few studies have reported weight gain in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treated with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs). This retrospective cohort study identified factors associated with substantial weight gain after DAA treatment in Taiwan. This study involved patients treated using DAAs at the Chiayi and Yunlin branches of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital from 1 January 2017 to 31 October 2020. Body weight data were collected at the start of DAA therapy and 2 years after the confirmation of a sustained virologic response. We performed multiple logistic regression to evaluate the clinical and laboratory parameters associated with a large body mass index (BMI) increase (≥5%). The mean BMI was 25.56 ± 4.07 kg/m2 at baseline and 25.77 ± 4.29 kg/m2 at the endpoint (p = 0.005). A considerable reduction in fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score was a significant predictor of a large BMI increase (OR: 1.168; 95% CI: 1.047-1.304, p = 0.006). By contrast, older age (OR: 0.979; 95% CI: 0.963-0.996, p = 0.013) and a higher baseline BMI (OR: 0.907; 95% CI: 0.863-0.954, p < 0.001) were associated with a reduced risk of a large increase in BMI at the endpoint. In summary, a larger BMI increase was closely associated with a younger age, lower baseline BMI, and higher FIB-4 score reduction. Notably, differences in DAA regimens did not affect outcomes. Future studies are needed to elucidate the long-term effects and metabolic outcomes associated with this body weight change and investigate the exact underlying mechanisms.

IMPORTANCE: At the National Cheng Kung University Hospital, numerous cases of amoebic keratitis had been identified with concurrent bacterial infections. Among these bacterial coinfections, Pseudomonas aeruginosa accounted for 50% of the reported cases. However, the impact of pathogenic bacteria on amoeba-induced corneal damage remains unclear. In our study, we successfully demonstrated that P. aeruginosa accumulated on the Acanthamoeba castellanii surface and caused more severe corneal damage. We also indicated that the exposure of P. aeruginosa to amoeba-soluble antigens enhanced its adhesion ability, promoted biofilm formation, and led to more severe corneal cell damage. These findings significantly contributed to our understanding of the risk associated with P. aeruginosa coinfection in the progression of amoeba keratitis.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of anti-pandemic measures, including wearing a face mask and receiving vaccinations, on interpersonal distance (IPD) during the normalization stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual reality (VR) technology was used to simulate the experimental environment and a confederate in different conditions. Thirty-one participants were asked to approach the virtual confederate, who could exhibit three vaccination states and two mask-wearing conditions, actively and passively in both indoor and outdoor environments. ANOVA results showed that the participants kept a smaller IPD from the confederate wearing a face mask (IPD = 125.6 cm) than from the one without a face mask (IPD = 154.2 cm). The effects of vaccination states were significant, with the largest distance for an unvaccinated confederate (IPD = 182.3 cm) and the smallest distance for the confederate who had received a booster vaccine (IPD = 111.5 cm). Significant effects of environment were also found, with the participants maintaining a larger IPD in an outdoor environment (IPD = 143.4 cm) than in an indoor room (IPD = 136.4 cm). Additionally, the IPD collected when the participants were passively approached (IPD = 149.6 cm) was significantly larger than that obtained when they actively approached the confederate (IPD = 130.3 cm). Moreover, when the participants faced a confederate who had received a booster vaccine and wore a mask, the IPD was not significantly different from that collected before the COVID-19 pandemic in both the active and passive patterns. These findings help us to better understand the nature of IPD and human behaviors during the normalization stage of the pandemic and provide scientific suggestions for policymakers to develop pandemic-prevention measures.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that causes brain cell death and is the leading cause of dementia. Most patients with Alzheimer's disease are diagnosed with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), with apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes being highly associated with the frequency of LOAD risk. A fluorescence detection system coupled with oligonucleotide ligation and magnetic separation was developed to identify two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for the APOE gene and recognize APOE alleles for LOAD. The system utilized a fluorescence probe with one base-discriminating nucleoside for SNP (F probe) and a perfectly complementary biotin-modified sequence against the target DNA (P probe). When the F and P probes matched the target DNA sequences, DNA ligation occurred, and ligation products were produced. Streptavidin magnetic beads were subsequently employed to remove the ligation products, and a decrease in fluorescence intensity was observed in the supernatant compared to when there was no target DNA. This system detected two SNPs of APOE alleles, namely rs429358 and rs7412. The results indicated that the R-values ((F0 - F1)/F0) for rs429358 were 0.92 ± 0.002 for the T/T target, 0.47 ± 0.004 for the T/C target and 0.11 ± 0.004 for the C/C target, respectively. The R-values for rs7412 were 0.73 ± 0.009 for the C/C target, 0.42 ± 0.001 for the C/T target and 0.16 ± 0.007 for the T/T target, respectively. F0 and F1 represent the fluorescence intensity of the F probe without and with target DNA, respectively. Based on fluorescence intensity, the fluorescence detection system was able to identify the genotypes of the APOE gene accurately to evaluate the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition is essential for tissue patterning and organization. It involves both regulation of cell motility and alterations in the composition and organization of the ECM-a complex environment of proteoglycans and fibrous proteins essential for tissue homeostasis, signaling in response to chemical and biomechanical stimuli, and is often dysregulated under conditions such as cancer, fibrosis, and chronic wounds. Here, we demonstrate that basonuclin-2 (BNC2), a mesenchymal-expressed gene, that is, strongly associated with cancer and developmental defects across genome-wide association studies, is a novel regulator of ECM composition and degradation. We find that at endogenous levels, BNC2 controls the expression of specific collagens, matrix metalloproteases, and other matrisomal components in breast cancer cells, and in fibroblasts that are primarily responsible for the production and processing of the ECM within the tumour microenvironment. In so doing, BNC2 modulates the motile and invasive properties of cancers, which likely explains the association of high BNC2 expression with increasing cancer grade and poor patient prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Acanthamoeba castellanii is a free-living protist that feeds on diverse bacteria. A. castellanii has frequently been utilized in studies on microbial interactions. Grazing bacteria also exhibit diverse effects on the physiological characteristics of amoebae, such as their growth, encystation, and cytotoxicity. Since the composition of amoebae amino acids is closely related to cellular activities, it can indicate the overall responses of A. castellanii to various stimuli. METHOD: A. castellanii was exposed to different culture conditions in low-nutrient medium with heat-killed DH5α to clarify their effects. A targeted metabolomic technique was utilized to evaluate the concentration of cellular amino acids. The amino acid composition and pathways were analyzed by two web-based tools: MetaboAnalyst and Pathview. Then, long-term exposure to A. castellanii was investigated through in silico and in vitro methods to elucidate the homeostasis of amino acids and the growth of A. castellanii. RESULTS: Under short-term exposure, all kinds of amino acids were enriched in all exposed groups. In contrast to the presence of heat-killed bacteria, the medium exhibited obvious effects on the amino acid composition of A. castellanii. After long-term exposure, the amino acid composition was more similar to that of the control group. A. castellanii may achieve amino acid homeostasis through pathways related to alanine, aspartate, citrulline, and serine. DISCUSSION: Under short-term exposure, compared to the presence of bacteria, the type of medium exerted a more powerful effect on the amino acid composition of the amoeba. Previous studies focused on the interaction of the amoeba and bacteria with effective secretion systems and effectors. This may have caused the effects of low-nutrient environments to be overlooked. CONCLUSION: When A. castellanii was stimulated in the coculture system through various methods, such as the presence of bacteria and a low-nutrient environment, it accumulated intracellular amino acids within a short period. However, different stimulations correspond to different amino acid compositions. After long-term exposure, A. castellanii achieved an amino acid equilibrium by downregulating the biosynthesis of several amino acids.

Blastocystis hominis is an intestinal protozoan that is often neglected, despite causing abdominal pain and diarrhea. Previous research has demonstrated that lipids can be synthesized by B. hominis or can accumulate in growth medium, but their function and mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Blastocystis remain unclear. Our study found that lipid-rich Blastocystis ST7-B can increase inflammation and disrupt Caco-2 cells more than the same parasite without the lipovenoes supplement. Additionally, the cysteine protease of Blastocystis, a virulence factor, is upregulated and has higher activity in lipid-rich Blastocystis. In order to better understand the effects of lipids on Blastocystis pathogenesis, we treated lipid-lowering pravastatin during Blastocystis ST7-B culturing with a lipovenoes supplement, which decreased the lipid levels of the Blastocystis and reduced the Blastocystis-induced inflammation and cell disruption of Caco-2 cells. We also analyzed the fatty acid composition and possible synthesis pathway in Blastocystis ST7-B, finding significantly higher ratios of arachidonic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid than in the other lipid components in lipid-rich Blastocystis ST7-B. These results suggest that lipids play a significant role in the pathogenesis of Blastocystis and provide important information on the molecular mechanisms of and potential treatments for Blastocystis infection.

An electrode-molecule-electrode configuration is a prototypical testbed for quantitatively studying the underlying physical chemistry. Rather than the molecular side of the interface, this review focuses on examples of electrode materials in the literature. The basic concepts and relevant experimental techniques are introduced.

BACKGROUND: Trichomonas tenax is a single-cell flagellated anaerobic organism, commensal in the human oral cavity. Although a previous study indicated that T. tenax could cause cell damage and phagocytose host epithelial cells, its pathological effects on gum cells remain unknown. Furthermore, several case reports have detected T. tenax in several patients with empyema and/or pleural effusion, which may have been aspirated from the oral cavity. However, the cytotoxic effects and immune responses of alveolar cells are unknown. Therefore, we aimed to determine the cytotoxic and immune effects of T. tenax on gums and pulmonary cell lines. The cytopathic effect and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) cytotoxicity assays were used to determine the level of cell damage in gum and lung epithelial cells. Western blot was used to determine the disruption of cell junctions. Finally, epithelial cell cytokines were measured using ELISA to elucidate the immune response to T. tenax. RESULTS: We found that T. tenax induced a cytotoxic effect on gum epithelial cells by disrupting cell junctions; however, it hardly triggered cellular damage in alveolar A549 cells and mucoepidermoid NCI-H292 cells. Furthermore, T. tenax induced the production of IL-6 at a low multiplicity of infection (MOI) in gum, A549, and NCI-H292 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that T. tenax can trigger gingival cell cytotoxicity, disrupt cell junctions, and induce IL-6 production in gingival and pulmonary cell lines.


Title: Trichomonas tenax induit des défauts de barrière et module la cytotoxicité inflammatoire des cellules épithéliales gingivales et pulmonaires. Abstract: Contexte : Trichomonas tenax est un organisme anaérobie unicellulaire flagellé, commensal dans la cavité buccale humaine. Bien qu'une étude précédente ait indiqué que T. tenax pouvait endommager les cellules et phagocyter les cellules épithéliales de l'hôte, ses effets pathogènes sur les cellules gingivales restent inconnus. En outre, plusieurs rapports ont détecté T. tenax chez des patients présentant un empyème et/ou un épanchement pleural, qui peut avoir été aspiré de la cavité buccale. Cependant, les effets cytotoxiques et les réponses immunitaires des cellules alvéolaires sont inconnus. Par conséquent, nous avons cherché à déterminer les effets cytotoxiques et immunitaires de T. tenax sur des lignées cellulaires de gencives et de poumons. Les tests d'effet cytopathique et de cytotoxicité de la lactate déshydrogénase (LDH) ont été utilisés pour déterminer le niveau de dommages cellulaires dans les cellules. Le Western Blot a été utilisé pour déterminer la perturbation des jonctions cellulaires. Enfin, les cytokines des cellules épithéliales ont été mesurées par ELISA pour élucider la réponse immunitaire à T. tenax. Résultats : Nous avons constaté que T. tenax induisait un effet cytotoxique sur les cellules épithéliales gingivales en perturbant les jonctions cellulaires. Cependant, T. tenax a déclenché des dommages cellulaires seulement mineurs dans les cellules alvéolaires A549 et les cellules mucoépidermoïdes NCI-H292. De plus, T. tenax a induit la production d'IL-6 à une faible multiplicité d'infection (MOI) dans les cellules de gencives, A549 et NCI-H292. Conclusions : Nos résultats suggèrent que T. tenax peut déclencher la cytotoxicité des cellules gingivales, perturber les jonctions cellulaires et induire la production d'IL-6 dans les lignées cellulaires gingivales et pulmonaires.

The findings regarding changes in renal function in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are controversial. This study attempted to identify the factors associated with the large decline in renal function following DAA treatment. This retrospective cohort study included patients treated with DAAs at Chiayi and Yunlin Chang Gung Hospitals, Taiwan, from 1 January 2017 to 31 October 2020. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) data were collected within 90 days prior to DAA therapy and 2 years after the confirmation of a sustained virologic response (SVR). We performed multiple logistic regression to evaluate the clinical or laboratory parameters associated with a large eGFR decline (≥10%). Among the enrolled 606 patients, the mean eGFR at the baseline and endpoint were 84.11 ± 24.38 and 78.88 ± 26.30 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively (p < 0.001). The factors associated with a large eGFR decline 2 years after the SVR included hypertension (OR: 1.481; 95% CI: 1.010-2.173, p = 0.044) and a higher baseline eGFR (OR: 1.016; 95% CI: 1.007-1.024, p < 0.001). A higher albumin level reduced the risk of a large eGFR decline (OR: 0.546; 95% CI: 0.342-0.872, p = 0.011). In the patients with HCV treated with DAAs, a larger renal function decline was more commonly observed in those with hypertension, a lower (but within normal range) albumin level, and a higher baseline eGFR, while DAA treatment had no effect. The clinical significance of these findings has to be further defined. Although some risk factors associated with chronic kidney disease may be alleviated after DAA treatment, the regular control and follow-up of risk factors and renal function are still recommended in at-risk patients after HCV eradication.

Acanthamoeba spp. are free-living protozoan that cause a serious human eye disease called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). Several new and effective medical therapy for AK patients remains highly debated and therefore, CHG is still considered one of the first lines of treatment for AK patients. We hypothesized that ocular microenvironmental factors are responsible for Acanthamoeba drug resistance and clinical AK treatment failure. To investigate the influence of the ocular surface on CHG treatment, we tested the effect of several ocular elements on the anti-amoeba activity of CHG. The suspected inhibitory elements, including mucin, albumin, human and amoeba cell lysates, live and heat-killed bacteria, and cornea, were added to the amoebicidal activity platform, where amoeba was incubated with CHG at varying concentrations. Mucin showed a significant inhibitory effect on CHG activity against Acanthamoeba castellanii In contrast, albumin did not affect CHG treatment. Furthermore, human and amoeba cell lysates as well as live and heat-killed bacterial suspensions also significantly inhibited CHG activity. Additionally, we found that pig corneas also reduced CHG activity. In contrast, dry eye drops and their major component, propylene glycol, which is commonly used as eyewash material, did not have an impact on CHG activity. Our results demonstrate the effect of ocular microenvironmental factors on CHG activity and suggest that these factors may play a role in the development of amoeba resistance to CHG and treatment failure.

The rapid development of information and communication technologies has facilitated machining condition monitoring toward a data-driven paradigm, of which the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) serves as the fundamental basis to acquire data from physical equipment with sensing technologies as well as to learn the relationship between the system condition and the collected condition monitoring data. However, most data-driven methods suffer from using a single-domain space, ignoring the importance of the learned features, and failing to incorporate the handcrafted features assisted by domain knowledge. To solve these limitations, a novel deep learning approach is proposed for machining condition monitoring in the IIoT environment, which consists of three phases, including: 1) the unsupervised parallel feature extraction; 2) adaptive feature importance weighting; and 3) hybrid feature fusion. First, separate sparse autoencoders are utilized to conduct the unsupervised parallel feature extraction, which enables to learn abstract feature representation from multiple domain spaces simultaneously. Then, an attention module is designed for the adaptive feature importance weighting, which can assign higher weights to those critical features accordingly. Moreover, a hybrid feature fusion is deployed to complement the automatic feature learning and further yield better model performance by fusing the handcrafted features assisted by domain knowledge. Finally, a real-life case study and extensive experiments have been conducted to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

Fermi's golden rule, a remarkable concept for the transition probability involving continuous states, is applicable to the interfacial electron-transporting efficiency via correlation with the surface density of states (SDOS). Yet, this concept has not been reported to tailor single-molecule junctions where gold is an overwhelmingly popular electrode material due to its superior amenability in regenerating molecular junctions. At the Fermi level, however, the SDOS of gold is small due to its fully filled d-shell. To increase the electron-transport efficiency, herein, gold electrodes are modified by a monolayer of platinum or palladium that bears partially filled d-shells and exhibits significant SDOS at the Fermi energy. An increase by 2-30 fold is found for single-molecule conductance of α,ω-hexanes bridged via common headgroups. The improved junction conductance is attributed to the electrode self-energy which involves a stronger coupling with the molecule and a larger SDOS participated by d-electrons at the electrode-molecule interfaces.

Antiaromatic compounds have recently received considerable attention because of their novel properties such as narrow HOMO-LUMO gaps and facile formation of mutual stacking. Here, the spontaneous assembly of antiaromatic meso-2-thienyl-substituted 5,15-dioxaporphyrin (DOP-1) is scrutinized at the liquid-solid interface by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Polymorphism in monolayers characterized by the orthogonal and parallel assemblies is found at the low concentration of 0.05 mM. The parallel assembly is more stable and dominantly formed at higher concentrations. Aggregation was observed at concentrations >0.2 mM, and the STM images of the aggregates implied the formation of stacked layers. The intrinsic electronic structures of the mutually stacked bilayer generated by applying an electric pulse to the monolayer were probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy to reveal the narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap by about 20 % compared with the monolayer, thus suggesting significant molecular orbital interactions.

Aß oligomers (AßO) are a dominant biomarker for early Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. A fluorescent aptasensor coupled with conformational switch-induced hybridization was established to detect AßO. The fluorescent aptasensor is based on the interaction of fluorophore-labeled AßO-specific aptamer (FAM-Apt) against its partly complementary DNA sequence on the surface of magnetic beads (cDNA-MBs). Once the FAM-Apt binds to AßO, the conformational switch of FAM-Apt increases the tendency to be captured by cDNA-MBs. This causes a descending fluorescence of supernatant, which can be utilized to determine the levels of AßO. Thus, the base-pair matching above 12 between FAM-Apt and cDNA-MBs with increasing hybridizing free energies reached the ascending fluorescent signal equilibrium. The optimized aptasensor showed linearity from 1.7 ng mL-1 to 85.1 (R = 0.9977) with good recoveries (79.27-109.17%) in plasma. Furthermore, the established aptasensor possesses rational selectivity in the presence of monomeric Aß, fibrotic Aß, and interferences. Therefore, the developed aptasensor is capable of quantifying AßO in human plasma and possesses the potential to apply in clinical cases.

Real-world data on the effectiveness of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) for patients with HCV infection and compensated cirrhosis is limited, especially for the 8-week regimen and in an Asian population. This retrospective study enrolled 159 consecutive patients with HCV and compensated cirrhosis who were treated with GLE/PIB at a single center in Taiwan. Sustained virological response (SVR) and adverse events (AEs) were evaluated. Among the 159 patients, 91 and 68 were treated with GLE/PIB for 8 and 12 weeks, respectively. In the per protocol analysis, both the 8- and 12-week groups achieved 100% SVR (87/87 vs. 64/64); and in the evaluable population analysis, 95.6% (87/91) of the 8-week group and 94.1% (64/68) of the 12-week group achieved SVR. The most commonly reported AEs, which included pruritus (15.4% vs. 26.5%), abdominal discomfort (9.9% vs. 5.9%), and skin rash (5.5% vs. 5.9%), were mild for the 8- and 12-week groups. Two patients in the 8-week group exhibited total bilirubin elevation over three times the upper normal limit. One of these two patients discontinued GLE/PIB treatment after 2 weeks but still achieved SVR. Both 8- and 12-week GLE/PIB treatments are safe and effective for patients of Taiwanese ethnicity with HCV and compensated cirrhosis.

Membrane technology has gained tremendous attention for removing pollutants from wastewater, mainly due to their affordable capital cost, miniature equipment size, low energy consumption, and high efficiency even for the pollutants present in lower concentrations. In this paper, we review the literature to summarize the progress of nanomaterial-modified membranes for wastewater treatment applications. Introduction of nanomaterial in the polymeric matrix influences membrane properties such as surface roughness, hydrophobicity, porosity, and fouling resistance. This review also covers the importance of functionalization strategies to prepare thin-film nanocomposite hybrid membranes and their effect on eliminating pollutants. Systematic discussion regarding the impact of the nanomaterials incorporated within membrane, toward the recovery of various pollutants such as metal ions, organic compounds, dyes, and microbes. Successful examples are provided to show the potential of nanomaterial-functionalized membranes for regeneration of wastewater. In the end, future prospects are discussed to develop nanomaterial-based membrane technology.
