RESUMO

Hydrophobic coatings have wide applications, but face challenges in food flexible packaging in terms of poor adhesion and inadequate wear resistance. Health hazards and poor adhesion drive the search for novel hydrophobic coatings substitutes. Here, we introduced rationally synthesized carnauba wax-SiO2 microspheres as a component to composite polyethylene (PE) film construction, and created a wear-resistant hydrophobic composite PE film via the blown film technique. The resultant hydrophobic composite film demonstrated an enhanced water contact angle from 86° to above 100°, coupled with favorable mechanical properties such as wear resistance, tensile strength and effective barrier performance against water vapor and oxygen. Upon implementation in the preservation of a Cantonese delicacy, Chaoshan fried shrimp rolls, it was observed that at 25 °C, the carnauba wax-SiO2-PE composite packaging film extended the shelf life of the product by 3 days compared to pure PE film.

Antibiotics can be accidentally introduced into farmland by wastewater irrigation, and the environmental effects are still unclear. In this study, the effects of oxytetracycline on the residue of imidacloprid in soil and radishes were investigated. Besides, the rhizosphere microbiome and radish metabolome were analyzed. It showed that the persistence of imidacloprid in soil was unchanged, but the content of olefin-imidacloprid was increased by oxytetracycline. The residue of imidacloprid in radishes was increased by nearly 1.5 times, and the hazard index of imidacloprid was significantly raised by 1.5-4 times. Oxytetracycline remodeled the rhizosphere microbiome, including Actinobe, Elusimic, and Firmicutes, and influenced the metabolome of radishes. Especially, some amino acid metabolic pathways in radish were downregulated, which might be involved in imidacloprid degradation. It can be assumed that oxytetracycline increased the imidacloprid residue in radish through disturbing the plant-rhizosphere microbiome holobiont and, thus, increased the pesticide dietary risk.

BACKGROUND: The role of thyroid health in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) has been emphasized in observational studies. However, whether the causation exists is unclear, and controversy remains about which specific disorder, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, is destructive in TMDs. This study aims to investigate the overall and specific causal effects of various thyroid conditions on TMDs. METHODS: Mendelian randomization (MR) studies were performed using genetic instruments for thyrotropin (TSH, N = 119,715), free thyroxine (fT4, N = 49,269), hypothyroidism (N = 410,141), hyperthyroidism (N = 460,499), and TMDs (N = 211,023). We assessed the overall effect of each thyroid factor via inverse-variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, and MR-Egger methods, and performed extensive sensitivity analyses. Additionally, multivariable MR was conducted to evaluate the direct or indirect effects of hypothyroidism on TMDs whilst accounting for TSH, fT4 and hyperthyroidism, and vice versa. RESULTS: Univariable MR analyses revealed a causal effect of hypothyroidism on an increased risk of TMDs (IVW OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.05-1.20, p = 0.001). No significant association between genetically predicted hyperthyroidism, TSH, or fT4 and TMDs. In the multivariable MR analyses, the effects of hypothyroidism on TMDs occurrence remained significant even after adjSusting for TSH, fT4 and hyperthyroidism (multivariable IVW OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.03-1.17, p = 0.006). No pleiotropy and heterogeneity were detected in the analyses (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Hypothyroidism might causally increase the risk of TMDs through a direct pathway, highlighting the critical role of managing thyroid health in the prevention of TMDs. Clinicians should give heightened attention to patients with hypothyroidism when seeking medical advice for temporomandibular discomfort. However, caution is warranted due to the potential confounders, pleiotropy, and selection bias in the MR study.

The development of a rapid and convenient detection method for nitrofurantoin (NFT) residual is of great significance for food safety. Herein, a new fluorescent probe (Eu-TDCA-Phen) was developed for the visual and sensitive assay of NFT through the fluorescence quenching effect of inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). The probe suspension demonstrates a wide linear range (0-0.16 mM), low detection limit (90 nM), high sensitivity, and rapid response time (2 min) in the "turn-off" process. To quantify the visual detection process, a smartphone-assisted test paper sensing platform was established and was applied for NFT determination in real honey samples, achieving satisfactory recovery rate ranges from 98.04 % to 105.04 %. Furthermore, a logic gate device was integrated with the sensing platform to streamline the visual detection process. The sensing platform offers several merits, including simpleness, quantification, portability and cost-effectiveness, making it highly suitable for real-time and on-site detection of antibiotics in food samples.

As the operational status of aircraft engines evolves, their fault modes also undergo changes. In response to the operational degradation trend of aircraft engines, this paper proposes an aircraft engine fault diagnosis model based on 1DCNN-BiLSTM with CBAM. The model can be directly applied to raw monitoring data without the need for additional algorithms to extract fault degradation features. It fully leverages the advantages of 1DCNN in extracting local features along the spatial dimension and incorporates CBAM, a channel and spatial attention mechanism. CBAM could assign higher weights to features relevant to fault categories and make the model pay more attention to them. Subsequently, it utilizes BiLSTM to handle nonlinear time feature sequences and bidirectional contextual feature information. Finally, experimental validation is conducted on the publicly available CMAPSS dataset from NASA, categorizing fault modes into three types: faultless, HPC fault (the single fault), and HPC&Fan fault (the mixed fault). Comparative analysis with other models reveals that the proposed model has a higher classification accuracy, which is of practical significance in improving the reliability of aircraft engine operations and for Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction.

BACKGROUND: As one of the most important indicators of socioeconomic status, educational attainment (EA) exhibits a strong association with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Despite this link, there is a lack of evidence regarding the causal role of EA in either facilitating or preventing TMDs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the causal effect of education on TMDs and explore potential mediating pathways. METHODS: Utilizing summary statistics from genome-wide association studies on years of schooling (N = 766 345) and TMDs (N = 211 023), we conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the overall effect of education. Additionally, a two-step MR approach was employed to evaluate 30 potential mediators and calculate the mediation proportions in the association. Comprehensive sensitivity analyses were used to verify the robustness, heterogeneity, and pleiotropy. RESULTS: Univariable MR analyses revealed a causal effect of lower EA on an increased risk of TMDs (OR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.43-0.66, p < .001). Five out of 30 modifiable factors were identified as causal mediators in the associations of EA with TMDs, including feeling nervous (mediation proportion: 11.6%), feeling tense (10.2%), depression (9.6%), feeling worry (7.6%) and daily smoking (8.9%). Meanwhile, no pleiotropy was detected in the analyses (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Our findings supported that higher EA has a protective effect on the onset of TMDs, with partial mediation by psychological disorders and daily smoking. Interventions on these factors thus have the potential of substantially reducing the burden of TMDs attributed to low education.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies investigated the associations between obesity and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), but the evidence for the causal inferences was unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the causal link between life course adiposity and TMDs. METHODS: Mendelian randomization (MR) studies were performed using genetic instruments for birth weight (BW) (N = 261 932), childhood body mass index (BMI) (N = 39 620), childhood body size (N = 454 718), adult BMI (N = 99 998), body fat percentage (N = 454 633) and TMDs (N = 211 023). We assessed the overall effect of each life course adiposity factor via inverse-variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, and MR-Egger methods and performed extensive sensitivity analyses. Additionally, multivariable MR was conducted to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of childhood BMI on TMDs while accounting for BW and adult BMI, and vice versa. RESULTS: Univariable MR analyses revealed a causal effect of low childhood adiposity on an increased risk of TMDs (childhood BMI: IVW OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.54-0.78, p < .001; childhood body size: IVW OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.43-0.73, p < .001). No causal association existed between genetically predicted BW, adult BMI, or body fat percentage and TMDs. In the multivariable MR analyses, the effects of childhood BMI on TMDs occurrence remained significant and direct, even after adjusting for BW and adult BMI (multivariable IVW OR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.61-0.99, p = .048). No pleiotropy and heterogeneity were detected (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Low childhood BMI might causally increase the risk of TMDs through a direct pathway.

Pymetrozine (PYM) is an effective pyridine insecticide for controlling aphids, while its residues pose a serious threat to human health. Herein, a europium complex (Eu-DBPA, DBPA represents deprotonated 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid ligand) probe was prepared for the detection of PYM via fluorescence quenching. The detection process has the advantages of short response time (2 min), wide linear range (0-4 and 4-45 mg/kg) and low detection limit (2.2 µg/kg). Furthermore, a portable detection platform was designed by integrating Eu-DBPA-based paper strip with smartphone and applied for the visual detection of PYM in real cucumber, tomato, cabbage and apple samples, obtaining satisfactory recovery (99.00 %-107.00 %) and low standard deviation (RSD < 3.4 %). In addition, a logic gate device was designed to simplify the detection process. The smartphone-integrated paper-based probe detection platform provides a new strategy for intelligent and online identification of hazards in environmental and biological samples.

With the expansion of global energy problems and the deepening of research on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, the development of low cost and high electrocatalytic performance catalysts has become a research hotspot. In this study, a hexagonal Pd-C-MnOOH composite catalyst was prepared by using the triblock copolymer P123 as the reducing agent and protective agent, sucrose as the carbon source and self-made MnOOH as the carrier under hydrothermal conditions. When the Pd load is 20% and the C/MnOOH ratio is 1 : 1, the 20% Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 catalyst obtained by the one-step method has the highest ORR activity and stability in the alkaline system. At 1600 rpm, the limiting diffusion current density and half-wave potential of the 20% Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 electrocatalyst are -4.78 mA cm-2 and 0.84 V, respectively, which are better than those of the commercial 20%Pd/C catalyst. According to the Koutecky-Levich (K-L) equation and the linear fitting results, the electron transfer number of the 20%Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction is 3.8, which is similar to that of a 4-electron process. After 1000 cycles, the limiting diffusion current density of the 20%Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 catalyst is -4.61 mA cm-2, which only decreases by 3.7%, indicating that the 20%Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 catalyst has good stability. The reason for the improvement of the ORR performance of the Pd-C-MnOOH composite catalyst is the improvement of the conductivity of the carbon layer formed by original carbonization, the regular hexagonal highly active Pd particles and the synergistic catalytic effect between Pd and MnOOH. The method of introducing triblock copolymers in the synthesis of oxides and metal-oxide composite catalysts is expected to be extended to other electrocatalysis fields.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been implicated in coronary artery disease (CAD) processes. However, the relationship between the gene polymorphisms of lncRNA RP1-276N6.2 as a novel molecule and susceptibility to CAD remains unclear. In our case-control study, 949 CAD patients and 892 healthy controls were genotyped using the TaqMan genotyping assay. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were performed to examine the expression levels of RP1-276N6.2 and SLC22A3(OCT3). We observed that CAD patients had significantly lower RP1-276N6.2 levels than those healthy participants (p < 0.05). Compared to the wild-type genotype, the rs611950 T allele and the rs10499313 AG genotype and G allele significantly increased the premature CAD risk (p = 0.02, p = 0.002, and p = 0.01, respectively), while the rs505000 G allele reduced this risk (p = 0.01); moreover, the rs505000 CG genotype significantly enhanced the delayed CAD risk (p = 0.03), and the rs505000 G allele reduced the expression levels of RP1-276N6.2 and SLC22A3 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05, respectively). In addition, RP1-276N6.2 positively regulated the mRNA and secreted protein levels of SLC22A3 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the RP1-276N6.2 gene polymorphisms were closely associated with CAD risk. LncRNA RP1-276N6.2 may be a potential genetic target for CAD early diagnosis and treatment.

Podocyte injury is the common initiating event in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Oxidative stress and inflammation mediate podocyte injury in FSGS. NRF2 pathway regulates the constitutive and inducible transcription of various genes that encode antioxidant proteins and anti-inflammatory proteins and have pivotal roles in the defense against cellular oxidative stress. In this study, we used adriamycin-induced nephropathy (ADR) in mice as a model of FSGS to confirm that CDDO-Me treatment ameliorated adriamycin-induced kidney damage by improving renal function and kidney histology. CDDO-Me inhibited the level of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in adriamycin-induced podocyte injury by activating NRF2 pathway in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, CDDO-Me stabled the cytoskeleton by regulating NRF2/srGAP2a pathway. Together, these findings show that by activating NRF2 pathway, CDDO-Me could be a therapeutic strategy to prevent the adverse effects of adriamycin-induced podocyte injury.

Lipid metabolism disorders are considerably involved in the pathology of atherosclerosis; nevertheless, the fundamental mechanism is still largely unclear. This research sought to examine the function of lipophagy in lipid metabolism disorder-induced atherosclerosis and its fundamental mechanisms. Previously, Sirt6 has been reported to stimulate plaque stability by promoting macrophage autophagy. However, its role in macrophage lipophagy and its relationship with Wnt1 remains to be established. In this study, ApoE-/-: Sirt6-/- and ApoE-/-: Sirt6Tg mice were used and lipid droplets were analysed via transmission electron microscopy and Bodipy 493/503 staining in vitro. Atherosclerotic plaques in ApoE-/-: Sirt6-/- mice showed greater necrotic cores and lower stability score. Reconstitution of Sirt6 in atherosclerotic mice improved lipid metabolism disorder and prevented the progression of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, macrophages with Ac-LDL intervention showed more lipid droplets and increased expression of adipophilin and PLIN2. Reconstitution of Sirt6 recruited using SNF2H suppressed Wnt1 expression and improved lipid metabolism disorder by promoting lipophagy. In addition, downregulation of Sirt6 expression in Ac-LDL-treated macrophages inhibited lipid droplet degradation and stimulated foam cell formation. Innovative discoveries in the research revealed that atherosclerosis is caused by lipid metabolism disorders due to downregulated Sirt6 expression. Thus, modulating Sirt6's function in lipid metabolism might be a useful therapeutic approach for treating atherosclerosis.

Invasive plants, like Spartina alterniflora (SA), have a competitive advantage over native flora due to their rapid utilization of vital soil nutrients. This results in the depletion of resources for native plant species, significantly impacting ecosystem diversity and stability. This comprehensive review addresses several key aspects related to SA's spread and spatial distribution in China's wetlands. The rapid expansion of Spartina alterniflora is attributed to its high reproductive ability, adaptability to environmental factors like elevated salinity, and ability to disperse its seeds via tides. Spartina alterniflora mainly were found in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, and Shanghai provinces, accounting for more than 90% of China's total Spartina alterniflora area. Spartina alterniflora rapid growth results in displacement of native species and loss of vital microbial, plant, and animal diversity. Some studies reported that Spartina alterniflora increases carbon storage, while others argue that it weakens this function. The impact of Spartina alterniflora on organic and inorganic carbon requires further research for better understanding dynamics of carbon in coastal wetlands. The controlled growth of Spartina alterniflora can be beneficial in many aspects of the coastal wetlands' ecosystem. In China, various methods have been employed to control the invasion of SA. Physical control, such as removing the plants and converting them into fertilizer or bioenergy, has been commonly used but has limitations like air pollution and the potential for re-invasion. Chemical herbicides like Imazapyr and Haloxyfop-R-methyl have effectively controlled and prevented re-invasion in specific areas, but their potential adverse impacts are still uncertain. Wetland Park construction, aquaculture development, and substituting native or exotic species with mangroves or reed communities have also been successful. It becomes evident that a long-standing and Contextual approach is necessary to effectively manage the advantages and curtail the drawbacks associated with S. alterniflora across China.

Introduction: In actual production, due to increased litter size when raising pigs, the management of piglets by split-suckling leads to intermittent neonatal maternal separation (MS). Early lactation is a critical period for the cognitive development of the brain of newborn piglets, and we hypothesized that intermittent MS may affect piglets' neurodevelopment and cognitive ability. Methods: To determine the effects of the MS, we selected hippocampal and prefrontal cortex (PFC) tissues from piglets for the detection of neurodevelopmental or cognitive related indicators, the control group (Con group, n = 6) was established with no MS and an experimental group (MS group, n = 6) was established with MS for 6 h/day. Piglets in the MS group were milk-supplemented during the separation period and all piglets in both treatment groups were weaned at postnatal day (PND) 35. On PND 35, three male piglets from each group were sacrificed for hippocampus and PFC samples used for reference transcriptome sequencing. Following bioinformatics analysis, Gene ontology (GO) enrichment, Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, and candidate gene screening and pathway were performed for differentially expressed genes. Results: The results showed that a total of 1,632 differential genes were identified in the hippocampus of the MS group, including 1,077 up-regulated differential genes, 555 down-regulated differential genes, and 655 significant GO entries. Analysis of the PFC of the MS group revealed 349 up-regulated genes, 151 down-regulated differential genes, and 584 significant GO entries. Genes associated with neurodevelopment were screened for large fold differences in the hippocampus, and genes associated with cognition were screened for large fold differences in the PFC. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to verify the sequencing data. Western blot (WB) experiments revealed that MS inhibited the neurodevelopment-related WNT signaling pathway in the hippocampus and the cognitive-related PI3K-AKT signaling pathway in the PFC. Discussion: Taken together, these findings suggest that intermittent MS may affect some cognitive functions in piglets by damaging hippocampal and PFC genes or pathways.

The polyethylene (PE) film mulching as a water conservation technology has been widely used in dryland agriculture, yet the long-term mulching has led to increasing accumulation of secondary pollutants in soils. The decomposition of PE film-sourced pollutants is directly associated with the enrichment of specific bacterial communities. We therefore hypothesized that plant biomass may act as an organic media to mediate the pollutant decomposition via reshaping bacterial communities. To validate this hypothesis, plant biomass (dried maize straw and living clover) was embedded at the underlying surface of PE film, to track the changes in the composition and function of bacterial communities in maize field across two years. The results indicated that both dry crop straw and alive clover massively promoted the α-diversity and abundance of dominant bacteria at plastisphere, relative to bulk soil. Bacterial communities tended to be clustered at plastisphere, forming the bacteria islands to enrich pollutant-degrading bacteria, such as Sphingobacterium, Arthrobacter and Paracoccus. As such, plastisphere bacteria islands substantially enhanced the degradation potential of chloroalkene and benzoate (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, bacterial network became stabilized and congregated at plastisphere, and markedly improved the abundance of plastisphere module hubs and connectors bacteria via stochastic process. Particularly, bacterial community composition and plastic film-sourced pollutants metabolism were evidently affected by soil pH, carbon and nitrogen sources that were mainly derived from the embedded biomass. To sum up, plant biomass embedding as a nature-based strategy (NbS) can positively mediate the decomposition of plastic-sourced pollutants through plastisphere bacteria island effects.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have shown that body mass index (BMI) is highly correlated with the occurrence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). However, these studies failed to present a causal relationship. Thus, we aimed to performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate causality between BMI and TMDs. METHODS: We performed a two-sample bidirectional MR analysis using large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Data were obtained from a large-scale BMI dataset (N = 322,154), TMDs dataset (N = 134,280). The causal effects were estimated with inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, MR Egger, weighted median. Sensitivity analyses were implemented with Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO, leave-one-out analysis and the funnel plot. RESULTS: In the forward MR analysis, a genetic prediction of low BMI was causally associated with a higher risk of TMDs (IVW OR: 0.575, 95% CI: 0.415-0.798, p: 0.001). Similar results were obtained using other complementary methods (MR Egger OR: 0.270, 95% CI: 0.104-0.698, p: 0.009; weighted median OR: 0.496, 95% CI: 0.298-0.826, p: 0.007). In the reverse MR results, TMDs was shown to have no significant effect on BMI (all p > 0.05). No pleiotropy and heterogeneity were detected in the bidirectional analysis (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: A lower BMI might be causally associated with increased risk of TMDs, supporting the importance of weight control for the prevention of TMDs. Clinicians should pay more attention to the low-BMI patients among those seeking medical advice due to temporomandibular joint discomfort.

OBJECTIVE: We previously reported that mutations in inner mitochondrial membrane peptidase 2-like (Immp2l) increase infarct volume, enhance superoxide production, and suppress mitochondrial respiration after transient cerebral focal ischemia and reperfusion injury. The present study investigated the impact of heterozygous Immp2l mutation on mitochondria function after ischemia and reperfusion injury in mice. METHODS: Mice were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion for 1 h followed by 0, 1, 5, and 24 h of reperfusion. The effects of Immp2l+/- on mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial respiratory complex III activity, caspase-3, and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) translocation were examined. RESULTS: Immp2l+/- increased ischemic brain damage and the number of TUNEL-positive cells compared with wild-type mice. Immp2l+/- led to mitochondrial damage, mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization, mitochondrial respiratory complex III activity suppression, caspase-3 activation, and AIF nuclear translocation. CONCLUSION: The adverse impact of Immp2l+/- on the brain after ischemia and reperfusion might be related to mitochondrial damage that involves depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, inhibition of the mitochondrial respiratory complex III, and activation of mitochondria-mediated cell death pathways. These results suggest that patients with stroke carrying Immp2l+/- might have worse and more severe infarcts, followed by a worse prognosis than those without Immp2l mutations.

In pig production, the management of piglets by batch lactation due to the increase in litter sizes of sows may result in intermittent early neonatal maternal separation (NMS). We speculated that NMS may affect the piglets cognitive growth performance and health. To determine the extent of the effect, 12 litters of crossbred piglets (Large White × Duroc × Min-pig) were used in this trial. Piglets in the control (Con) group (n = 6) were given a standard feeding method during lactation. Piglets in the experimental group (n = 6) were subjected to the NMS model, in which sows were led out of the enclosure with food every day (8:00-11:00 and 13:00-16:00) starting from postnatal day (PND) 7. During the separation, the piglets were supplemented with milk. All experimental piglets were weaned on PND 35. The piglets were observed for aggression, play, mutual sniffing, and exploratory behavior on PNDs 7, 8, 21, 22, 34, 35, 38, 39, 51, 52, 64, and 65. Physiological indicators, namely serum adrenaline, cortisol, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were measured on PNDs 35, 38, and 65, while piglet growth performance was evaluated during suckling and 1 month after weaning. The results showed that aggressive behavior in the MS group was significantly higher than that in the Con group (P < 0.05). Playful and mutual sniffing behaviors in the MS group were significantly lower than those in the Con group except for PNDs 38 and 39 (P < 0.05). Active exploratory behavior in the MS group was significantly higher than that in the Con group on PNDs 7 and 8, and PNDs 21 and 22 (P < 0.05). The frequency of belly-nosing behavior was significantly higher in the MS group than that in the Con group except for PNDs 64 and 65 (P < 0.05). Compared with the Con group, epinephrine, IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α concentrations on PNDs 35, 38, and 65 were significantly increased in the MS group (P < 0.01), while IL-4 concentration was significantly decreased (PND 35: P < 0.05; PNDs 38 and 65: P < 0.01). Compared with the Con group, the piglet diarrhea rate in the MS group during suckling was significantly increased (P < 0.01), the weaning weight was significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and it had no significant effect on the body weight at the end of the trial (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the early intermittent NMS created stress and affected the growth performance of piglets during suckling. However, the growth rate was improved by compensatory measures during late weaning.


Although management methods, such as split-suckling and foster care, in pig production can improve piglet survival rates, these methods inevitably lead to neonatal maternal separation which is an early stress on the body, and can have serious negative effects on the body. In this experiment, we investigated the effect level of neonatal maternal separation on behavior, physiology, and growth performance of piglets. The study found that early intermittent maternal separation leads to anxiety and behavioral changes in piglets, negatively affecting diarrhea rates and weaning weights in suckling piglets, but the effects on growth performance in lactating piglets can be ameliorated during the nursing period.

In this work, fluorescent adsorbents that can efficiently detect and remove Pb2+ were developed by integrating the designed amino-modified carbon quantum dots and carboxyl-modified collagen. The adsorption properties of the fluorescent adsorbent were further optimized and analyzed using a series of response surface experiments. The maximum adsorption concentration for Pb2+ was 183 mg.g-1. The adsorption isotherms fit well with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics fit with the pseudo-second-order model. The emission intensity of the fluorescent adsorbent gradually decreased with the increase of the concentration of Pb2+, and had a good linear correlation. In addition, the mechanism of detection and removal of Pb2+ by fluorescent adsorbents was further demonstrated. The novel three-dimensional structured fluorescent aerogel can be used as a promising adsorbent with good adsorption concentration and sensing ability for Pb2+, which shows great prospects in wastewater.

Antibiotics have been widely used for improving human and animal health and well-being for many decades. However, the enormous antibiotic usage in agriculture especially for livestock leads to considerable quantities of antibiotic residues in associated food products and can reach potentially hazardous levels for consumers. Therefore, timely detection and systematical surveillance on residual antibiotics in food materials are of significance to minimize the negative impact caused by such unwanted antibiotic leftovers. To this end, we constructed a cloud-platform-based system (ARSCP) for comprehensive surveillance of antibiotic residues in food materials. With the system, we collected 126,560 samples from 68 chicken farms across China and detected the antibiotic residues using a rapid detection colorimetric commercial (Explorer 2.0) kit and UPLC-MS/MS. Only 108 (0.085 %) of the samples contained residual antibiotics exceeding the MRLs and all data were subjected to ARSCP system to provide a landscape of antibiotic residues in China. As a proof-of-concept, we provided an overview of residual antibiotics based on data from China, but the system is generally applicable to track and monitor the antibiotic residues globally when the data from other countries are incorporated. We used the combined Explorer 2.0 and MS data to construct ARSCP, an antimicrobial residue surveillance cloud platform for raw chicken samples. ARSCP can be used for rapid detection and real-time monitoring of antibiotic residues in animal food and provides both data management and risk warning functions. This system provides a solution to improve the management of facilities that must monitor antibiotic MRLs in food animal products that can reduce the pollution of antibiotics to the environment.
