RESUMO
Escherichia albertii is an emerging foodborne enteropathogen associated with infectious diarrhoea in humans. In February 2023, an outbreak of acute gastroenteric cases was reported in a junior high school located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. Twenty-two investigated patients presented diarrhoea (22/22, 100%), abdominal pain (21/22, 95.5%), nausea (6/22, 27.3%), and vomiting (3/22, 13.6%). E. albertii strains were successfully isolated from anal swabs collected from six patients. Each isolate was classified as sequence type ST2686, harboured eae-ß gene, and carried both cdtB-I and cdtB-II subtypes, being serotyped as EAOg32:EAHg4 serotype. A comprehensive whole-genome phylogenetic analysis revealed that the six isolates formed a distinct cluster, separate from other strains. These isolates exhibited minimal genetic variation, differing from one another by 0 to 1 single nucleotide polymorphism, suggesting a common origin from a single clone. To the best of our knowledge, this represented the first reported outbreak of gastroenteritis attributed to E. albertii outside of Japan on a global scale.

In the traditional dry etching process for photonic device fabrication, the etching effect is influenced in many ways, usually resulting in relatively large sidewall roughness and high transmission loss. In this study, an effective method, namely the secondary coating method, is proposed to reduce the transmission loss of a Ge-Sb-Se chalcogenide waveguide and increase the quality factor (Q-factor) of a Ge-Sb-Se chalcogenide micro-ring resonator. The Ge-Sb-Se waveguide and micro-ring resonator are fabricated by ultraviolet exposure/electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma etching technology. Afterward, a 10â nm-thick Ge-Sb-Se thin film is deposited by thermal evaporation. The measurements show that after secondary coating, the sidewall roughness of the waveguide is reduced from 11.96â nm to 6.52â nm, with the transmission loss reduced from 2.63± 0.19â dB/cm to 1.86± 0.11â dB/cm at 1.55â µm wavelength. Keeping an equal coupling condition with equal radius and coupling distance, the Q-factor of the micro-ring resonator is improved by 47.5% after secondary coating. All results indicate that the secondary coating method is a feasible way to generate low-loss and high Q-factor integrated chalcogenide photonic devices.
RESUMO
The inferior colliculus (IC) represents a crucial relay station in the auditory pathway, located in the midbrain's tectum and primarily projecting to the thalamus. Despite the identification of distinct cell classes based on various biomarkers in the IC, their specific contributions to the organization of auditory tectothalamic pathways have remained poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate that IC neurons expressing parvalbumin (ICPV+) or somatostatin (ICSOM+) represent two minimally overlapping cell classes throughout the three IC subdivisions in mice of both sexes. Strikingly, regardless of their location within the IC, these neurons predominantly project to the primary and secondary auditory thalamic nuclei, respectively. Cell class-specific input tracing suggested that ICPV+ neurons primarily receive auditory inputs, whereas ICSOM+ neurons receive significantly more inputs from the periaqueductal gray and the superior colliculus (SC), which are sensorimotor regions critically involved in innate behaviors. Furthermore, ICPV+ neurons exhibit significant heterogeneity in both intrinsic electrophysiological properties and presynaptic terminal size compared with ICSOM+ neurons. Notably, approximately one-quarter of ICPV+ neurons are inhibitory neurons, whereas all ICSOM+ neurons are excitatory neurons. Collectively, our findings suggest that parvalbumin and somatostatin expression in the IC can serve as biomarkers for two functionally distinct, parallel tectothalamic pathways. This discovery suggests an alternative way to define tectothalamic pathways and highlights the potential usefulness of Cre mice in understanding the multifaceted roles of the IC at the circuit level.

In this paper, we present the design of a compact reconfigurable polarization beam splitter (PBS) enabled by ultralow-loss phase-changing Sb2Se3. By harnessing the phase-change-mediated mode coupling in a directional coupler (DC), guided light with different polarizations could be routed into different paths and this routing could be dynamically switched upon the phase change of Sb2Se3. With an optimized DC region, the proposed PBS demonstrates efficient polarization splitting with crosstalk less than -21.3â dB and insertion loss less than 0.16â dB at 1550â nm for both phase states of Sb2Se3, and features energy efficient property benefitting from the nonvolatile phase change of Sb2Se3, which holds great potentials for on-chip applications involving polarization control, including polarization-division multiplexing system, quantum photonics, microwave photonics, etc.
RESUMO
The expression of defensive responses to alerting sensory cues requires both general arousal and a specific arousal state associated with defensive emotions. However, it remains unclear whether these two forms of arousal can be regulated by common brain regions. We discovered that the medial sector of the auditory thalamus (ATm) in mice is a thalamic hub controlling both general and defensive arousal. The spontaneous activity of VGluT2-expressing ATm (ATmVGluT2+) neurons was correlated with and causally contributed to wakefulness. In sleeping mice, sustained ATmVGluT2+ population responses were predictive of sensory-induced arousal, the likelihood of which was markedly decreased by inhibiting ATmVGluT2+ neurons or multiple downstream pathways. In awake mice, ATmVGluT2+ activation led to heightened arousal accompanied by excessive anxiety and avoidance behavior. Notably, blocking their neurotransmission abolished alerting stimuli-induced defensive behaviors. These findings may shed light on the comorbidity of sleep disturbances and abnormal sensory sensitivity in specific brain disorders.

Resonance coupling in the regime of bound states in the continuum (BICs) provides an efficient method for engineering nanostructure's optical response with various lineshape while maintaining an ultra-narrow linewidth feature, where the quality factor of resonances plays a crucial role. Independent manipulation of the Q factors of BIC resonances enables full control of interaction behavior as well as both near- and far-field light engineering. In this paper, we harness reflection symmetry (RS) and translational symmetry (TS) protected BIC resonances supported in an asymmetric dimer lattice and investigate Q-factor-mediated resonance coupling behavior under controlled TS and RS perturbations. We focus on in-plane electrical dipole BIC (EDi-BIC) and magnetic dipole BIC (MD-BIC) which are protected by RS, and out-of-plane electrical dipole BIC (EDo-BIC) protected by TS. The coupling between EDi-BIC and EDo-BIC exhibits a resonance crossing behavior where the transmission spectrum at the crossing could be tuned flexibly, showing an electromagnetically induced transparency lineshape or satisfying the lattice Kerker condition with pure phase modulation capability depending on TS and RS perturbed Q factors. While the coupling between MD-BIC and EDo-BIC shows an avoided resonance crossing behavior, where the strongly coupled resonances would lead to the formation of a Friedrich-Wintgen BICs whose spectral position could also be shifted by tuning the Q factors. Our results suggest an intriguing platform to explore BIC resonance interactions with independent Q factor manipulation capability for realizing multi-functional meta-devices.
RESUMO
On-chip nonvolatile photonic switches enabled by phase change materials (PCMs) are promising building blocks for power-efficient programmable photonic integrated circuits. However, large absorption loss in conventional PCMs (such as Ge2Sb2Te5) interacting with weak evanescent waves in silicon waveguides usually leads to high insertion loss and a large device footprint. In this paper, we propose a 2×2 photonic switch based on two-mode interference in a multimode slot waveguide (MSW) with ultralow loss Sb2S3 integrated inside the slot region. The MSW supports two lowest order TE modes, i.e., symmetric TE00 and antisymmetric TE01 modes, and the phase of Sb2S3 could actively tune two-mode interference behavior. Owing to the enhanced electric field in the slot, the interaction strength between modal field and Sb2S3 could be boosted, and a photonic switch containing a â¼9.4 µm-long Sb2S3-MSW hybrid section could effectively alter the light transmission between bar and cross ports upon the phase change of Sb2S3 with a cross talk (CT) less than -13.6 dB and an insertion loss (IL) less than 0.26 dB in the telecommunication C-band. Especially at 1550 nm, the CT in the amorphous (crystalline) Sb2S3 is -36.1 dB (-31.1 dB) with a corresponding IL of 0.073 dB (0.055 dB). The proposed 2×2 photonic switch is compact in size and compatible with on-chip microheaters, which may find promising applications in reconfigurable photonic devices.

Laser based on single plasmonic nanoparticle can provide optical frequency radiation far beyond the diffraction limit and is one of the ultimate goals of nanolasers, yet it remains a challenge to be realized because of the inherently high Ohmic loss. Here, we report the direct observation of lasing in microfiber-coupled single plasmonic nanoparticles enabled by strong mode coupling. We show that, by strongly coupling a gold nanorod (GNR) with the whispering gallery cavity of a dye-doped polymer microfiber (with diameter down to 2.0 µm), the substantially enhanced optical coherence of the hybrid photon-plasmon mode and effective gain accumulated from the active microfiber cavity enable single-mode laser emission from the GNR at room temperature with a threshold as low as 2.71 MW/cm2 and a linewidth narrower than 2 nm.

Metalenses can potentially reduce the size and complexity of existing cameras, displays, and other optical devices, owing to their capability of flexible manipulation of the polarization, amplitude, and phase of light. However, metalenses capable of maintaining polarization and broadband wavefront shaping under arbitrarily polarized excitation have not been studied. In this study, we present the first demonstration of a biomimetic moth-eye-shaped metalens for polarization-maintaining, broadband and angle-insensitive focusing under an arbitrarily polarized excitation in the mid-infrared waveband (3.1-8.0â µm). Modulation and focusing efficiencies of 92% and 90%, respectively, were achieved. Moreover, a bifocal moth-eye-shaped metalens operating at normal and oblique incidences was realized. Compared to previously reported metalenses, the one proposed in this study exhibited a better focusing under oblique incidence, ensuring light transmission as effectively as a traditional lens. This study paves the way for the development of polarization-maintaining, broadband, and angle-insensitive microscale optical devices and imaging systems.

Reconfigurable silicon photonic devices attract much research attention, and hybrid integration with tunable phase-change materials (PCMs) exhibiting large refractive index contrast between amorphous (Am) and crystalline (Cr) states is a promising way to achieve this goal. Here, we propose and numerically investigate a Sb2Se3-Si hybrid waveguide Bragg filter operating in the telecom C-band on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed device consists of a Bragg grating (BG) with a thin top layer of ultralow-loss Sb2Se3 PCM interacting with evanescent field of the silicon waveguide mode. By harnessing the ultralow-loss and reversible index change of Sb2Se3 film, the spectral response of the hybrid BGs could be dynamically tuned. We also theoretically investigate the reversible phase transitions between Am and Cr states of Sb2Se3 film that could be attained by applying voltage pulses on the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) strip heater covered on Sb2Se3 film. Thermal simulations show that a 2 V (4.5 V) pulse with a duration of 400 ns (55 ns) applied to electric contacts would produce crystallization (or amorphization). The proposed structure may find great potential for on-chip phase tunable devices on a silicon platform.
RESUMO
Optical microsphere resonators working in the near- and mid-infrared regions are highly required for a variety of applications, such as optical sensors, filters, modulators, and microlasers. Here, a simple and low-cost approach is reported for batch fabrication of high-quality chalcogenide glass (ChG) microsphere resonators by melting high-purity ChG powders in an oil environment. Q factors as high as 1.2 × 106 (7.4 × 105 ) are observed in As2 S3 (As2 Se3 ) microspheres (≈30 µm in diameter) around 1550-nm wavelength. Smaller microspheres with sizes around 10 µm also show excellent resonant responses (Q ≈ 2.5 × 105 ). Based on the mode splitting of an azimuthal mode in a microsphere resonator, eccentricities as low as ≈0.13% (≈0.17%) for As2 S3 (As2 Se3 ) microspheres are measured. Moreover, by coupling ChG microspheres with a biconical As2 S3 fiber taper, Q factors of ≈1.7 × 104 (≈1.6 × 104 ) are obtained in As2 S3 (As2 Se3 ) microspheres in the mid-infrared region (around 4.5 µm). The high-quality ChG microspheres demonstrated here are highly attractive for near- and mid-infrared optics, including optical sensing, optical nonlinearity, cavity quantum electrodynamics, microlasers, nanofocusing, and microscopic imaging.

While the nanowire (NW) lasers have attracted much attentions as nanoscale coherent sources in recent years, the heat accumulation and temperature-rise-induced breakdown remain challenges to improving the lasers for practical applications. Here we propose a microscale liquid-cooled approach to address the issue. Calculated results show that, compared with conventional air-cooled lasing systems, liquid-cooled NW lasers can allow much higher thermal power. By keeping the NW temperature below 373 K, the allowed thermal power in water is about 21 times that in air (850 µW in water versus 40 µW in air). Transient temperature evolution reveals a much faster heat dissipation of the NW in water (30 ns) than in air (7 µs), indicating a much higher allowable repetition rate in water than in air (e.g., 10 MHz versus 100 kHz). Our results suggest a possible route to compact NW lasers with higher power, new materials and new operation modes.

Due to the characteristic of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) excitation, radial polarized beams and circular polarized beams are widely used for plasmonic lens and plasmonic near field focusing. In this paper, a plasmonic lens based on in-plane total internal reflection (TIR) scheme is proposed and numerically demonstrated to achieve the simultaneous nanofocusing of azimuthal and radial polarized beams. By means of the in-plane TIR mechanism, the operation bandwidth of lens ranges from visible light to mid-infrared. The proposed structure has been utilized in the design of a plasmonic liquid refractive index sensor and is expected to find potential applications in near-field optical energy focusing, near-field imaging and sensing.
RESUMO
We propose an approach to directly measure the bending effect on individual modes in few-mode fibers using a wavelength-scanning spatially and spectrally resolved imaging technique. By collecting a fiber output beam profile with a scanning wavelength at different bending diameters and analyzing the peaks of its Fourier transformation, we have distinguished higher-order modes (HOMs) of the fiber and investigated their group delay, beam profile, bend loss, and mode splitting individually. We have experimentally verified with a multilayer core fiber at 1-8 cm bending diameters that its HOMs experience more loss compared to lower-order modes, but delay at approximately the same speed as the bending diameter decreases. Mode splitting of the LP11 mode at a small bending diameter due to bending-induced birefringence is also observed and discussed. This method provides an efficient tool to study the bending effect on individual HOMs in fibers and could be extended to studying fiber stretching and twisting.

We explore terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes supported in multimode Kagome hollow-core fibers. Numerical models are adopted to characterize the effective indices and confinement losses of vector modes over 0.2-0.9 THz, where two low-loss transmission windows are observed. Linearly combining the vector modes, THz OAM states can be generated. Covering a broad bandwidth of 0.25 THz, the purity values of OAM modes are beyond 0.9. Using numerical simulations, the hollow-core THz fibers with one and two rings of Kagome structures are also comparably investigated. We reveal that the OAM purity is dependent upon the confinement performance of THz fiber.

We propose and analyze nonlinear coupler based on a pair of single mode graphene-coated nanowires. Nonlinear wave interactions in such structure are analyzed by the coupled mode equations derived from the unconjugated Lorentz reciprocity theorem. We show that the routing of plasmons in the proposed structure can be controlled by the input power due to the third order nonlinear response of graphene layer. Our findings show that graphene nonlinearity can be exploited in tunable nanoplasmonic circuits based on low-loss, edgeless cylindrical graphene waveguides.
RESUMO
In this Letter, we show that a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) slot waveguide can achieve strong field enhancement and light confinement in a slot region and a giant gradient force between h-BN slabs. Excellent agreement between simulations and results from an analytical model is observed. In a two-dimensional case, a field enhancement ratio near 60, a power confinement ratio of 80%, and a gradient force over -8.5 nN/µm×mW have been achieved, which are much higher than the slot waveguide based on artificial hyperbolic metamaterials. The gradient force and power confinement ratio in a three-dimensional slot waveguide structure are also studied. A gradient force of -1.2 nN/mW and a power confinement ratio of 50% have been obtained. The h-BN slot waveguide may have potential in particle manipulation.
RESUMO
In this Letter, we investigate the nanofocusing of hybrid plasmons-phonons-polaritons (SPP-HPhPs) in a graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) heterostructure with a graphene coating on a tapered h-BN slab. Compared with the hyperbolic phonon polariton (HPhP) in h-BN, the hybrid SPP-HPhP in a heterostructure exhibits much smaller losses, which is validated through both analytical and numerical methods. Furthermore, the thickness dependent dispersions of a hybrid SPP-HPhP enable the tapered heterostructure to achieve a function of focusing electromagnetic waves. Compared with the tapered h-BN slab, the field enhancement in a tapered heterostructure is improved evidently with a maximum enhancement of the amplitude of normalized electric field over 60. This nanofocusing scheme may have potential in applications such as nonlinear optics.
RESUMO
We study second harmonic generation in a pair of graphene-coated nanowires. We show that the phase matching condition for harmonic generation can be engineered in a wide range of frequencies by tuning the spacing between graphene nanowires. We derive coupled mode equations describing the process of second harmonic generation using an unconjugated Lorentz reciprocity theorem. We show that the highest harmonic generation efficiency can be achieved by phase matching the fundamental mode with the two lowest order symmetric modes at the second harmonic frequency. Despite losses in graphene, we predict that the efficiency can be further enhanced by reducing the radius of nanowires due to larger mode overlap and lower propagation loss.
RESUMO
In this paper we propose a method of unidirectional excitation of graphene plasmons via metal nanoantenna arrays and reveal its application in a circular polarization analyzer. For nanoantenna pairs with orthogonal orientations, the graphene plasmons are excited through antenna resonances with the direction of propagation can be controlled by incident polarization. On the other hand, based on the spiral shape distribution of antenna arrays, a circular polarization analyzer can be obtained via the interaction of geometric phase effect of antenna arrays and the chirality carried by incident polarization. By utilizing the unidirectional excitation of plasmons, the extinction ratio of analyzer can be improved to over 103, which is at least an order of magnitude larger than the result of antenna pairs with same orientations or antenna arrays with closed circular shape formation. The proposed analyzer may find applications in analyzing chiral molecules using different circularly polarized waves.
