Shift work is a prevalent workplace exposure, which increases the possibility of unhealthy behaviours and circadian rhythm disruptions and elevates the risk of metabolic diseases and adverse reproductive outcomes. But its potential of increasing the risk of postpartum weight retention remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal shift work prior to conception and postpartum weight retention, and to identify modifiable factors during pregnancy for prevention. We analysed data from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, a prospective cohort of Taiwanese women who gave birth in 2005. We examined the pre-conceptional shift work status of 13,575 mothers and their body weight before pregnancy, before delivery, six and eighteen months after delivery. We used multivariable linear models to examine associations and effect modifications. Maternal shift work before pregnancy was significantly associated with increased postpartum weight retention at six and eighteen months (ß-estimate for six months: 0.19-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.03-0.34; eighteen months: 0.23-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.04-0.40). The association between shift work and weight retention at six months postpartum was stronger among mothers who were overweight or obese before pregnancy than mothers with normal weight. This study showed the impact of shift work on postpartum weight retention and suggested a stronger association among mothers with overweight or obesity before pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Parabens are a group of substances commonly employed as antimicrobial preservatives. The effect of parabens on the development of neurotoxicity in children is still controversial. This study aimed to explore the associations between parabens exposure and children's neurodevelopmental performance, emphasizing potential sex differences and the combined effects of parabens. METHODS: We used the long-term follow-up study of Taiwanese generation, Taiwan Birth Panel Study II (TBPS II). We recruited the group of children at 6-8 years old. And, we measured parabens in children urine, including methylparaben (MP), ethylparaben (EP), propylparaben (PP) and butylparaben (BP). Children's attention-related performance was evaluated using the Conners Kiddie Continuous Performance Test 2nd Edition (K-CPT 2). The study employed both linear regression and mixture analysis quantile g-computation (QGC) methods to discern associations. A stratified analysis by sex and QGC was implemented to delve deeper into the cumulative effects of parabens. RESULTS: A total of 446 subjects completed both the parabens analysis and the K-CPT 2 survey. The overall association between parabens and neurodevelopmental performance was not pronounced, but discernible sex differences emerged. In the single pollutant analysis, elevated PP concentrations were associated with higher K-CPT 2 scores particularly in detectability (d') (ß = 0.92 [95 % CI = 0.15 to 1.69]) and commissions (ß = 0.95 [95 % CI = 0.12 to 1.78]), among girls. Further, in the mixture analysis, a significant association between PP and detectability (d') was observed in girls (ß = 1.68 [95 % CI = 0.11 to 3.26]). CONCLUSIONS: This study identified sex-specific associations between parabens and attention performance. Consistent outcomes across single and mixture analysis methods. Further research is crucial to clarify these causal associations.

Yolk-consuming (lecithotrophic) embryos of oviparous animals, such as those of fish, need to make do with the maternally derived yolk. However, in many cases, yolk possesses little carbohydrates and sugars, including glucose, the essential monosaccharide. Interestingly, increases in the glucose content were found in embryos of some teleost fishes; however, the origin of this glucose has been unknown. Unveiling new metabolic strategies in fish embryos has a potential for better aquaculture technologies. In the present study, using zebrafish, we assessed how these embryos obtain the glucose. We employed stable isotope (13C)-labeled substrates and injected them to the zebrafish embryos. Our liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based isotope tracking revealed that among all tested substrate, glutamate was most actively metabolized to produce glucose in the zebrafish embryos. Expression analysis for gluconeogenic genes found that many of these were expressed in the yolk syncytial layer (YSL), an extraembryonic tissue found in teleost fishes. Generation 0 (G0) knockout of pck2, a gene encoding the key enzyme for gluconeogenesis from Krebs cycle intermediates, reduced gluconeogenesis from glutamate, suggesting that this gene is responsible for gluconeogenesis from glutamate in the zebrafish embryos. These results showed that teleost YSL undergoes gluconeogenesis, likely contributing to the glucose supplementation to the embryos with limited glucose source. Since many other animal lineages lack YSL, further comparative analysis will be interesting.

AIM: Cesarean section delivery is associated with microbiota disruption and immuno-dysregulation during childhood, but the association with Kawasaki disease remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the association between Cesarean section and Kawasaki disease. METHODS: We examined the association between Kawasaki disease between six and eighteen months and Cesarean section within a birth cohort of 15,796 mother-infant pairs in Taiwan. The associations were assessed with Poisson regression in the study population, in the 1:2 propensity score-matched subpopulation, and compared with febrile convulsion, trauma and accidents during the same interval as negative control outcomes. RESULTS: Cesarean section was found to increase the risk of Kawasaki disease among overall population (adjusted relative risk [aRR]: 2.22, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.14-4.34) and the matched subpopulation (aRR: 2.29, 95 % CI: 1.14-4.68 in PS-matched subpopulation). Meanwhile, there was no association between Cesarean section and the clinic visits for febrile convulsion, trauma and accidents. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study identified a potential association between Cesarean section delivery and a higher risk of Kawasaki disease during six-to eighteen months of the prospective birth cohort in Taiwan.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are becoming a serious health issue and will cause 10 million deaths per year by 2050. As a result, the development of new antimicrobial agents is urgently needed. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are found in the innate immune systems of various organisms to effectively fend off invading pathogens. In this study, we designed a series of AMPs (THL-2-1 to THL-2-9) with centrosymmetric and amphipathic properties, through substituting different amino acids on the hydrophobic side and at the centrosymmetric position to improve their antimicrobial activity. The results showed that leucine as a residue on the hydrophobic side of the peptide could enhance its antimicrobial activity and that glutamic acid as a centrosymmetric residue could increase the salt resistance of the peptide. Thus, the THL-2-3 peptide (KRLLRELKRLL-NH2 ) showed the greatest antimicrobial activity (MIC90 of 16 µM) against Gram-negative bacteria and had the highest salt resistance and cell selectivity among all the designed peptides. In summary, the results of this study provide useful references for the design of AMPs to enhance antimicrobial activity.

The shallow-water hydrothermal vent system of Kueishan Island has been described as one of the world's most acidic and sulfide-rich marine habitats. The only recorded metazoan species living in the direct vicinity of the vents is Xenograpsus testudinatus, a brachyuran crab endemic to marine sulfide-rich vent systems. Despite the toxicity of hydrogen sulfide, X. testudinatus occupies an ecological niche in a sulfide-rich habitat, with the underlying detoxification mechanism remaining unknown. Using laboratory and field-based experiments, we characterized the gills of X. testudinatus that are the major site of sulfide detoxification. Here sulfide is oxidized to thiosulfate or bound to hypotaurine to generate the less toxic thiotaurine. Biochemical and molecular analyses demonstrated that the accumulation of thiosulfate and hypotaurine is mediated by the sodium-independent sulfate anion transporter (SLC26A11) and taurine transporter (Taut), which are expressed in gill epithelia. Histological and metagenomic analyses of gill tissues demonstrated a distinct bacterial signature dominated by Epsilonproteobacteria. Our results suggest that thiotaurine synthesized in gills is used by sulfide-oxidizing endo-symbiotic bacteria, creating an effective sulfide-buffering system. This work identified physiological mechanisms involving host-microbe interactions that support life of a metazoan in one of the most extreme environments on our planet.

Phthalates have become important environmental pollutants due to their high exposure frequency in daily life; thus, phthalates are prevalent in humans. Although several epidemiologic surveys have linked phthalates with several adverse health effects in humans, the molecular events underlying phthalate exposure have not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to reveal associations between phthalate exposure and the serum metabolome in Taiwanese children using a metabolomic approach. A total of 256 Taiwanese children (8-10 years old) from two cohorts were enrolled in this study. Twelve urinary phthalate metabolites were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, while a nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomic approach was used to record serum metabolic profiles. The associations between metabolic profiles and phthalate levels were assessed by partial least squares analysis coupled with multiple linear regression analysis. Our results revealed that unique phthalate exposures, such as mono-isobutyl phthalate, mono-n-butyl phthalate, and mono (2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate, were associated with distinct serum metabolite profiles. These phthalate-mediated metabolite changes may be associated with perturbed energy mechanisms, increased oxidative stress, and lipid metabolism. In conclusion, this study suggests that metabolomics is a valid approach to examine the effects of environmental-level phthalate on the serum metabolome. This study also highlighted potentially important phthalates and their possible effects on children.

The role of serum uric acid (SUA) in the role of advanced fibrosis is not fully explored. The study assesses the risk of advanced fibrosis according to SUA in an Asian population with a total of 3612 subjects enrolled in one health management center between 2006 and 2008. The fibrosis-4 score was used for the prediction of the high risk of advanced fibrosis. SUA scores higher than 7.6 mg/dL in men and 6.6 mg/dL in women were defined as hyperuricemia. A proportional odds model was used to assess cumulative risks of advanced fibrosis. The prevalence of high risk of advanced fibrosis was 2.5% in the hyperuricemia group and 0.6% in the normal SUA group (p < 0.001). After adjustment for confounding factors, the odds ratios (OR) for more severe advanced fibrosis were 1.37 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07−1.78) in the hyperuricemia group. Hyperuricemia only increased the risk of advanced fibrosis in the non-T2DM group (OR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.04 to 1.74) instead of T2DM group (OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 0.97 to 3.53). SUA is a risk factor for a higher risk of advanced fibrosis, with the disease likely progressing from a steatotic to a fibrotic picture. The focus should be more emphasized in non-T2DM groups.

Background: Previous studies found that maternal shift work during pregnancy was associated with many reproductive hazards, including small for gestational age, preterm birth, stillbirth, and neurodevelopmental impairment. Some studies also showed that these children are more likely to become overweight in early childhood. However, the association with metabolic factors, such as insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, was less studied. Hence, we aimed to understand better the relationship between maternal shift work during pregnancy and the risk of childhood overweight and metabolic outcomes. Confounding factors were also discussed, including diet, exercise, and demographical factors. Methods: We enrolled pregnant women before delivery in the Taiwan Birth Panel Study (TBPS) II conducted between 2010 and 2012, and followed the children of these participants in 2018. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of prenatal and postnatal factors on infant and early childhood health. During the follow-up in 2018, we checked children's demographic data, obtained blood specimens, and checked their blood sugar, blood insulin, and lipid profiles. Structured questionnaires were used to evaluate demographic data. Multiple linear and logistic regressions were used to examine the associations between maternal shift work during pregnancy and child overweight, metabolic disorders, such as HOMA-IR, and lipid profiles. Results: In this study, we included 407 mother-children pairs with different work shifts (350 day workers and 57 shift workers), and a sub-population without underweight children was also created (290 day workers and 47 shift workers). Shift work during pregnancy was associated with a higher Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance index (HOMA-IR) and a higher odds ratio for overweight in children born from mothers doing shift work during pregnancy after adjustment. The findings were attenuated when we investigated the effect of shift work before pregnancy. Conclusion: Our study suggested that maternal shift work during pregnancy was associated with child overweight and insulin resistance in early childhood.

Background Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex disorder characterized by chronic widespread pain and significant patient burden. Patients with chronic hepatitis C are reportedly predisposed to the development of FM. Direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAA) achieved a remarkable therapeutic efficacy in CHC patients. We therefore investigated the impact of DAA on FM symptoms in CHC patients. Methods We enrolled consecutive CHC patients who received DAA. FM symptoms were evaluated based on the 2016 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) fibromyalgia scale at baseline and 12 and 24 weeks after cessation of DAA therapy. Logistic regression was performed to determine the influence of HCV on FM at baseline. We also recruited individuals who underwent a health checkup examination as the control group, and calculated the standardized prevalence ratio of FM in CHC patients. Comparisons of fibromyalgia in different time points were undertaken using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results A total of 33 CHC patients (15 males and 18 females) and 402 controls were recruited. All CHC patients achieved sustained virological response. Two (6%) patients and two (0.5%) controls fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for FM, and the standardized prevalence ratio was 23.9 in CHC patients. Logistic regression also showed increased odds for FM in CHC patients after adjusting for age and sex (OR: 14.4; 95%CI: 1.6, 128.0). In addition, their fibromyalgianess scale decreased at 12 and 24 weeks after DAA therapy. In conclusion, CHC patients were more likely to develop FM. Implementation of DAA therapy might improve FM symptoms in these patients.

Global warming both reduces global temperature variance and increases the frequency of extreme weather events. In response to these ambient perturbations, animals may be subject to trans- or intra-generational phenotype modifications that help to maintain homeostasis and fitness. Here, we show how temperature-associated transgenerational plasticity in tilapia affects metabolic trade-offs during developmental stages under a global warming scenario. Tropical tilapia reared at a stable temperature of 27 °C for a decade were divided into two temperature-experience groups for four generations of breeding. Each generation of one group was exposed to a single 15 °C cold-shock experience during its lifetime (cold-experienced CE group), and the other group was kept stably at 27 °C throughout their lifetimes (cold-naïve CN group). The offspring at early life stages from the CE and CN tilapia were then assessed by metabolomics-based profiling, and the results implied that parental cold-experience might affect energy provision during reproduction. Furthermore, at early life stages, progeny may be endowed with metabolic traits that help the animals cope with ambient temperature perturbations. This study also applied the feature rescaling and Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) to visualize metabolic dynamics, and the result could effectively decompose the complex omic-based datasets to represent the energy trade-off variability. For example, the carbohydrate to free amino acid conversion and enhanced compensatory features appeared to be hypothermic-responsive traits. These multigenerational metabolic effects suggest that the tropical ectothermic tilapia may exhibit transgenerational phenotype plasticity, which could optimize energy allocation under ambient temperature challenges. Knowledge about such metabolism-related transgenerational plasticity effects in ectothermic aquatic species may allow us to better predict how adaptive mechanisms will affect fish populations in a climate with narrow temperature variation and frequent extreme weather events.

ß-Adrenergic agonist compounds are medicines that open up the lung's medium and large airways. ß-Adrenergic agonist compounds have been illegally or legally used to increase lean muscle mass in meat animals, bodybuilding, weight-loss programs, and athletes. Developing a rapid analytical approach for determining ß-adrenergic agonist compounds in biological samples is crucial for individual exposure assessment. This study established an analytical method for simultaneously measuring eight ß-adrenergic agonist compounds in human urine, including clenbuterol, terbutaline, salbutamol, ractopamine, zilpaterol, cimaterol, tulobuterol, and fenoterol. Two hundred microliters of a urine sample were added to eight deuterium-labeled internal standard mixtures and glucuronidase/arylsulfatase for enzymatic hydrolysis, and were then analyzed using an online clean-up system coupled with a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system (LC-MS/MS). The limit of quantification ranged from 0.03 to 0.12 ng/mL urine for the eight ß-adrenergic agonist compounds. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of the within-run and between-run precisions were less than 10%, and the relative accuracy errors were less than 17% in the three-level spiked artificial urine samples. Two hundred eighty human urine samples collected from the general population in Taiwan were assessed to demonstrate the capability and feasibility of this method. The detection frequencies were 33% for clenbuterol, 5% for ractopamine, and less than 5% for the others. We concluded that the isotope dilution-online clean-up system coupled with LC-MS/MS method is a valuable analytical method for investigating urinary ß-adrenergic agonist compounds in humans and is valuable for human biomonitoring studies.

Relatively warm environments caused by global warming enhance the productivity of aquaculture activities in tropical/subtropical regions; however, the intermittent cold stress (ICS) caused by negative Arctic Oscillation can still result in major economic losses. In contrast to endotherms, ectothermic fishes experience ambient temperature as an abiotic factor that is central to performance and survival. Therefore, the occurrence of extreme temperatures caused by climate change has ignited a surge of scientific interest from ecologists, economists and physiologists. In this study, we test the transgenerational effects of rearing cold-experienced (CE) and cold-naïve (CN) strains of tropical tilapia. Our results show that compared to CN tilapia, the CE strain preferentially converts carbohydrates into lipids in liver at a regular temperature of 27 °C. Besides, at a low temperature of 22 °C, the CE strain exhibits a broader aerobic scope than CN fish, and their metabolite profile suggests a metabolic shift towards the utilization of glutamate derivatives. Therefore, in response to thermal perturbations, this transgenerational metabolic adjustment provides evidence into the adaptive trade-off mechanisms in tropical fish. Nevertheless, global warming may result in less thermal variation each year, and the stabilized ambient temperature may cause tropical tilapia to gradually exhibit lower energy deposits in liver. In addition to those habitants in cold and temperate regions, a lack of cold exposure to multiple generations of fish may decrease the native cold-tolerance traits of subtropical/tropical organisms; this notion has not been previously explored in terms of the biological effects under anthropogenic climate change.

Although recent epidemiologic studies have focused on some of the health effects of perfluoroalkyl substance (PFASs) exposure in humans, the associations between PFASs exposure and the lipidome in children are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess lipid changes in children to understand possible molecular events of environmental PFASs exposure and suggest potential health effects. A total of 290 Taiwanese children (8-10 years old) were included in this study. Thirteen PFASs were analyzed in their serum by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). MS-based lipidomic approaches were applied to examine lipid patterns in the serum of children exposed to different levels of PFASs. LC coupling with triple quadrupole MS technology was conducted to analyze phosphorylcholine-containing lipids. Multivariate analyses, such as partial least squares analysis along with univariate analyses, including multiple linear regression, were used to analyze associations between s exposure and unique lipid patterns. Our results showed that different lipid patterns were discovered in children exposed to different levels of specific PFASs, such as PFTrDA, PFOS, and PFDA. These changes in lipid levels may be involved in hepatic lipid metabolism, metabolic disorders, and PFASs-membrane interactions. This study showed that lipidomics is a powerful approach to identify critical PFASs that cause metabolite perturbation in the serum of children and suggest possible adverse health effects of these chemicals in children.

BACKGROUND: Dyspnea is a common trigger of emergency department visits among terminally ill and cancer patients. Frequent emergency department (ED) visits at the end of life are an indicator of poor-quality care. We examined emergency department visit rates due to dyspnea symptoms among palliative patients under enhanced home palliative care. METHODS: Our home palliative care team is responsible for patient management by palliative care specialists, residents, home care nurses, social workers, and chaplains. We enhanced home palliative care visits from 5 days a week to 7 days a week, corresponding to one to two extra visits per week based on patient needs, to develop team-based medical services and formulate standard operating procedures for dyspnea care. RESULTS: Our team cared for a total of 762 patients who exhibited 512 ED visits, 178 of which were due to dyspnea (mean ± SD age, 70.4 ± 13.0 years; 49.4% male). Dyspnea (27.8%) was the most common reason recorded for ED visits, followed by pain (19.0%), GI symptoms (15.7%), and fever (15.3%). The analysis of Group A versus Group B revealed that the proportion of nonfamily workers (42.9% vs. 19.4%) and family members (57.1% vs. 80.6%) acting as caregivers differed significantly (P < 0.05). Compared to the ED visits of the Group A, the risk was decreased by 30.7% in the Group B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study proves that enhanced home palliative care with two additional days per week and formulated standard operating procedures for dyspnea could significantly reduce the rate of ED visits due to non-organic dyspnea during the last 6 months of life.

INTRODUCTION: Secondhand smoke exposure during pregnancy has long been associated with adverse health outcomes in children, but only a few studies have examined its effect modifiers. In this study, we applied effect modification analysis for maternal prepregnancy weight status on detrimental neurodevelopmental effect of secondhand smoke exposure during pregnancy and infancy in a nationwide representative population. AIMS AND METHODS: Term singleton mother-infant pairs with nonsmoking mothers were included for main analysis (N = 15 987) from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study (TBCS), and were further matched with propensity score (n = 5434). We extracted secondhand smoke exposure during pregnancy and infancy, and eight neurodevelopmental milestones from the responses in the baseline visit at 6 months, and 18-month follow-up of TBCS. The associations between secondhand smoke exposure and neurodevelopmental achievement were analyzed with multivariable logistic regression and Cox model. Propensity score weighting and matching were applied for high-versus-low analysis, and relative excess risk due to interaction were used to estimate effect modification. RESULTS: Higher secondhand smoke exposure was associated with increased likelihood of delayed milestone achievement across gross motor, fine motor, language-related, and social-related domains. The associations in fine motor domains remained observable in propensity score-weighted and -matched models. We identified additive interaction with self-reported maternal overweight and obesity status before pregnancy in milestone development for walking with support, scribbling, and waving goodbye. CONCLUSIONS: Secondhand smoke exposure during pregnancy and infancy were associated with delayed neurodevelopmental milestone achievement at 18 months, and the associations were modified by maternal prepregnancy overweight and obesity status. IMPLICATIONS: The study results suggested the association between maternal secondhand smoke exposure during pregnancy and infancy and delayed fine motor and language-related milestone achievement at 18 months in multivariable, propensity score weighting, and matching populations. The results of positive effect modifications for maternal prepregnancy overweight and obesity status suggested the importance of concurrent interventions on smoke-free environment and maternal health during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Household incense burning is a common ritual behavior in the Asia-Pacific region but has been associated with inferior developmental outcomes in term infants. We aimed to examine these associations among preterm infants. METHODS: Information from 1190 mother-infant pairs during 6- and 18-month follow-up to the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study was examined for associations between household incense burning exposure and infant neurodevelopmental milestone achievement using multivariable Cox proportional hazard model with propensity score weighting, along with stratified, sensitivity, and decomposition analysis. RESULTS: Household incense burning exposure was associated with delayed gross motor milestone achievement among all preterm infants according to the Cox model and after propensity score weighting. Meanwhile, associations for delayed development were found in gross motor domain milestones among late preterm infants, while fine motor domain delay was found among other preterm infants. Furthermore, the associations between household incense burning status and gross motor milestone delays were attenuated by the interaction between higher education level and household incense burning exposure status. CONCLUSIONS: Household incense burning exposure was associated with delays, and the motor domains affected differed according to degree of prematurity. These associations were modified by the attenuation upon higher maternal educational status and exposure status interaction.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUA), are common persistent environmental organic pollutants. Animal studies have indicated that PFAS influence inflammatory responses and lung development. However, whether prenatal or childhood PFAS exposure affects children's lung function remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate both in utero exposure and childhood exposure to PFAS and the relationships between them and lung function development in childhood. METHODS: In total, 165 children were recruited from the Taiwan Birth Panel Study (TBPS). Cord blood plasma and children's serum were collected when they were eight years old. PFAS levels were analysed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. When these children reached eight years of age, we administered detailed questionnaires and lung function examinations. RESULTS: The mean concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUA in cord blood among the 165 study children were 2.4, 6.4, 6.0, and 15.4 ng/mL, respectively. The mean concentrations in serum from eight-year-olds were 2.7, 5.9, 0.6, and 0.3 ng/mL, respectively. At eight years of age, the mean FEV1 (forced expiratory volume per sec), FVC (forced vital capacity), PEF (peak expiratory flow) and FEV1/FVC values were 1679 mL, 1835 mL, 3846 mL/s and 92.0%, respectively. PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUA levels in cord blood were inversely associated with FEV1, FVC and PEF values. The PFOS concentration in cord blood was the most consistently correlated with decreasing lung function before and after adjusting for confounding factors. The PFOS concentration was also significantly inversely correlated with lung function in subgroups with lower birth weight and allergic rhinitis. CONCLUSIONS: Our cohort study revealed that the concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUA were higher in cord blood than in serum from eight-year-olds. Some trends were also noted between intrauterine PFOS exposure and children's decreasing FEV1, FVC and PEF, especially in subgroups with lower birth weight and allergic rhinitis. Therefore, intrauterine PFAS exposure, especially PFOS, may play a vital role in lung development.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are an emerging class of artificial environmental chemicals that have multiple potentially harmful effects on health. The largest Science Park in Taiwan discharges wastewater containing PFASs into the Keya River, and a high concentration of PFASs has been found in this river and its aquatic creatures. We conducted a cross-sectional study from 2016 to 2017 of 397 subjects aged 55-75 years living near the river and evaluated the association of PFASs with metabolic syndrome and related outcomes. The results indicated that perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) levels were positively associated with serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (P for trend = 0.03) and that perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and PFOS levels were positively correlated with uric acid levels (P for trend = 0.03 and 0.03). Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) levels were negatively associated with serum triglyceride levels (P for trend = 0.014 and < 0.01). After excluding lipid-lowering drug users, the association between certain PFAS levels and the LDL level was significantly enhanced, but the downward trends of serum triglyceride levels were weakened. When stratified by sex, PFNA (P for trend <0.01), perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS) (P for trend <0.01), and PFOS (P for trend <0.01) showed positive associations with the uric acid level only among males. In conclusion, our results showed that associations were consistently null between PFASs and metabolic syndrome. PFAS levels were associated with serum lipids, and lipid-lowering drugs may interfere with this relationship. Certain PFASs were found to be positively associated with uric acid levels, especially in males. Further studies are warranted to clarify the causal relationships.
