RESUMO

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is strictly linked to chronic oxidative stress, inflammation, loss of epithelial barrier integrity, and often with abnormal new blood vessel development. In this study, the retinal epithelial cell line ARPE-19 was treated with pro-inflammatory transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) to investigate the activity of vitamin D (VD) and sulforaphane (SF) in abating the consequences of oxidative stress and inflammation. The administration of VD and SF lowered reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and abated the related expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 and interleukin-8 induced by TGF-ß. We evaluated mitochondrial respiration as a source of ROS production, and we discovered that the increased transcription of respiratory elements triggered by TGF-ß was prevented by VD and SF. In this model of inflamed epithelium, the treatment with VD and SF also reduced the secretion of VEGF, a key angiogenic factor, and restored the markers of epithelial integrity. Remarkably, all the observed biological effects were potentiated by the co-stimulation with the two compounds and were not mediated by VD receptor expression but rather by the ERK 1/2 pathway. Altogether, the results of this study reveal the powerful synergistic anti-inflammatory activity of SF and VD and lay the foundation for future clinical assessment of their efficacy in AMD.

Kounis Syndrome (KS) is a clinical entity triggered by allergic or hypersensitivity reactions capable of inducing acute coronary events. Several causes can induce KS, including drugs and insect stings. Here, a rare case of post mortem assessment of fatal KS related to fluorescein retinal angiography has been reported. An 80-year-old man in follow-up for a retinal vein thrombosis underwent a retinal fluoroangiography. Approximately 30 min later, the patient complained of sweating and dizziness, and suddenly lost consciousness due to a cardiac arrest. Despite the immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he died. The autopsy revealed foamy yellowish edema in the respiratory tract and coronary atherosclerosis with eccentric plaques partially obstructing the lumen. The routine histology highlighted lung emphysema and myocyte break-up with foci of contraction band necrosis at the myocardial tissue. Biochemistry showed increased serum tryptase, troponin, and p-BNP. Activated and degranulated (tryptase) mast cells were detected, using immunohistochemistry, in the larynx, lungs, spleen, and heart. Acute myocardial ischemia due to allergic coronary vasospasm related to fluorescein hypersensitivity has been assessed as cause of death. KS-related deaths are considered rare events, and the post mortem assessment of KS quite difficult. The integration of several investigations (gross and microscopic examination, biochemistry, immunohistochemistry) can provide useful findings to support the diagnosis, helping to reduce the unrecognized cases as much as possible.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of povidone-iodine 0.6% (PVI) irrigation for preventing recurrence of stenosis after punctoplasty in patients with punctal and proximal canalicular stenosis treated using a venous catheter as a stent. Methods: Twenty patients were enrolled and divided into two groups. Group 1 received irrigation of 1 mL 0.6% PVI, while Group 2 received 1 mL of balanced salt solution (BSS). The patients underwent baseline, 15-, 30-, and 90-day assessments using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, Symptoms Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE), Schirmer I test, tear meniscus height (TMH), bulbar redness, meibography, and non-invasive breakup time (NIKBUT) through Keratograph 5M (Oculus, Germany). Results: At three months, both groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in symptoms and ocular surface parameters. However, Group 1 showed statistically significant improvements in OSDI, SANDE scores, bulbar redness, and NIKBUT compared to Group 2. Additionally, no patients in Group 1 presented a recurrence of stenosis, while three patients in Group 2 demonstrated stenosis relapse at the end of the follow-up period. Conclusions: The application of a venous catheter and PVI 0.6% irrigations proved to be effective in treating proximal lacrimal duct stenosis, reducing the risk of recurrence and improving tear film stability, ocular discomfort symptoms, and ocular surface parameters.

PURPOSE: Aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of dexamethasone (DEX) 0.7 mg intravitreal implant in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) and serous retinal detachment (SRD), and to study the prognostic factors on a follow up of 12 months. METHODS: Forty eyes of twenty- six patients with centre involving DME and SRD, who underwent DEX implant, were enrolled. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), Swept source OCT imaging and intraocular pressure were evaluated. Central macular thickness (CMT), vitreomacular adhesion (VMA), disorganization of retinal inner layers (DRILs), hyperreflective dots (HRD), SRD and ellipsoid zone (EZ) disruption were included in the analysis at baseline and 12 months after implant. RESULTS: According to our parametric analysis, at 12 months, BVCA improvement from 48.6 ± 23.4 letters to 53.3 ± 24.5 letters was statistically significant (p = 0.04), CMT decreased from 460 ± 99.52 µm to 322.9 ± 117 µm. The presence at baseline of VMA (p = 0.01), EZ disruption (p = 0.03) and DRILs (p = 0.04), were associated with poor BCVA improvement at the end of follow-up. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, OCT biomarkers can be considered significant prognostic factors for treatment outcome in patients with DME undergoing DEX intravitreal implant.

Purpose: to assess the tomographic retinal layers' thickness in eyes affected by branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) and to compare it to those of patients affected by primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: retrospective review of 27 patients; 16 with BRAO (16 eyes) and 11 with POAG (20 eyes) were identified among those who received SD-OCT scans, including analysis of macular retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), inner plexiform layer (IPL), inner nuclear layer (INL), neuroretinal rim (NRR), circumpapillary RNFL at 3.5 mm and hemisphere asymmetry (HA). Results: the total IPL and INL thinning difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p = 0.0067 and p < 0.0001, respectively). The HA difference for the total macular thinning, mRNFL, GCL, IPL and INL (p < 0.0001) was also statistically significant. The analysis of the average total retinal thinning, total mRNFL and GCL thinning showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: unilateral inner retinal thinning may represent a sign of temporal BRAO, particularly for INL thinning and HA difference over 17µm in total retinal layer thinning. This information is particularly useful in the diagnosis of previous, undiagnosed BRAO and may help prevent further retinal arterial occlusion and possible cerebrovascular incidents.

PURPOSE: Evaluate the agreement between IOL Master 500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) and MYAH (Topcon EU, Visia Imaging, Japan) in measuring axial length, keratometry, and anterior corneal astigmatism. SETTING: Department of Biomedical and Dental Sciences and Morphofunctional Imaging, Ophthalmology Clinic, University of Messina, Messina, Italy. METHODS: In this prospective study, 40 eyes (right eye 25, left eye 15) of 40 patients were included. Axial length (AL), keratometry (K1, K2), and anterior corneal astigmatism (ACA) were measured. AL, mean K (Kavg) and magnitude of ACA were compared using Bland - Altman plot analysis, parametric and nonparametric statistical analysis. The difference vector and angle of error of the ACA measured by the two devices were evaluated by vector analysis using polar diagrams. RESULTS: Mean and standard deviation with IOL Master and with MYAH device was for AL 24.25 ± 1.22 mm and 24.25 ± 1.22 mm (p = .99), for Kavg 42.75 ± 1.53 D and 42.85 ± 1.52 D (p = .78), for Magnitude of ACA 1.00 ± 0.58 D and 0.89 ± 0.56 D (p = .38) respectively. High correlations were found for AL (R² = 0.999), Kavg (R² = 0.996), and ACA Magnitude (R² = 0.889). Bland-Altman analysis of the two devices found high agreement and absence of proportional bias (MYAH-IOL MASTER) were found between the two assessments for AL (bias = -0.0005 mm, p = .93), Kavg (bias = 0.0955 D, p = .76) and ACA (bias = 0.11 D, p = .41). Limit of agreement (upper/lower LoA, 95%CI) were respectively +0.057/-0.058 mm for AL, + 0.29/-0.09 D for Kavg and +0.49/-0.27 D for ACA. No statistical difference was found between the x-component and y-component of the ACA vector (p > .01), the difference vector (IOL MASTER-MYAH) was +0.14 D axis 159 with an absolute mean angle of error of 7.2 ± 7.5 degree. CONCLUSIONS: The instruments appear to be interchangeable for measurements of AL, keratometry, and magnitude of ACA with high agreement between the two devices. Also, in the presence of low astigmatism, the two instruments give the same results in terms of ACA.

SIGNIFICANCE: Spontaneous closure of an idiopathic full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) is a rare event. The underlying mechanisms are unclear because of the difficulty in detecting subtle structural changes even with serial imaging. Previous reports are largely optical coherence tomography (OCT) based, but multimodal imaging could highlight new information. PURPOSE: This study aimed to report the spontaneous closure of an idiopathic FTMH (iFTMH) and its recurrence and late closure documented by serial OCT integrated with multimodal imaging modalities and microperimetry (MP). CASE REPORT: A healthy 46-year-old man was referred to the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Padova for an iFTMH in the right eye with preserved visual acuity. The patient was scheduled for monthly controls up to 12 months by an integrated assessment of OCT, angiography-OCT, short-wavelength fundus autofluorescence, and MP. Two months later, tracked OCT scans showed a closure of the hole with a residual lamellar macular hole. Sequential examinations revealed a discontinuation of photoreceptors (ellipsoid zone) and a recurrence of iFTMH, and 7 months later, iFTMH reclosed without any relevant changes up to 12 months. Foveal avascular zone area increased from the baseline reaching its maximum value when iFTMH recurred. Two hyper-fundus autofluorescence points were detected in the foveal area, one progressively decreased and one reached the most intense signal when iFTMH recurred. Retinal sensitivity decreased mostly in one hyper-fundus autofluorescence point when the ellipsoid zone line discontinued and reached the lowest value when iFTMH recurred, and increased mostly in the other points when iFTMH reclosed. CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous iFTMH closure, as well as its recurrence and reclosure, is a rare event. By monitoring with multiple imaging modalities, MP and their overlaying elaboration can add new biomarkers with diagnostic and prognostic value.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the incidence and risk factors for cystoid macular edema (CME) and epiretinal membrane (ERM) development after surgery for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). METHODS: Retrospective observational cohort study involving 62 consecutive patients with primary RRD who underwent RRD repair with either scleral buckling (SB) or pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). SB was used in young phakic patients without posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), high myopic patients, and RRD associated with either anterior or inferior retinal tears. PPV was preferred over SB in pseudophakic patients or those with media opacity and posterior breaks that precluded the SB approach. After surgery, the macular changes, including CME and ERM development, were evaluated 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were performed in phakic patients where media opacity or lens bulging did not allow the surgeon to perform surgical maneuvers. The inner limiting membrane (ILM) peeling was randomly performed in the macula-off and the macula-on RRD "pending foveal detachment" subgroup. RESULTS: Sixty-two eyes affected by RRD who underwent SB or PPV were enrolled. CME occurred in 33.3% of the PPV group regardless of the ERM formation. No CME cases were found in the SB group. Macula-off RRD increased the risk of CME by odds ratio (OR) = 4.3 times compared to macula-on RRD regardless of the surgical procedure (p = 0.04). Macula-off status increased the risk of CME of OR = 1.73 times compared to macula-on in the PPV subgroup (p = 0.4). Combined cataract surgery and PPV increased the risk of CME by OR = 3.3 times (p = 0.16) compared to PPV alone, and ILM peeling increased the risk of postoperative CME by OR = 1.8 times (p = 0.37). ERM occurred in 28% of patients who did not undergo ILM peeling, and 29.42% of those who underwent ILM peeling developed ERM (p = 0.6). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of postoperative CME was higher in patients with macula-off than in macula-on RRD and in those with macula-off RRD who underwent PPV. The SB would be advisable in patients with RRD sparing the macula. Furthermore, despite having several advantages, the combined phacoemulsification plus IOL implantation and PPV highly increased the risk of postoperative CME.

The incidence rates of light-induced retinopathies have increased significantly in the last decades because of continuous exposure to light from different electronic devices. Recent studies showed that exposure to blue light had been related to the pathogenesis of light-induced retinopathies. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying changes induced by light exposure are not fully known yet. In the present study, the effects of exposure to light at different wavelengths with emission peaks in the blue light range (400-500 nm) on the localization of Calretinin-N18 (CaR-N18) and Calbindin-D28K (CaB-D28K) in adult zebrafish retina are studied using double immunofluorescence with confocal laser microscopy. CaB-D28K and CaR-N18 are two homologous cytosolic calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs) implicated in essential process regulation in central and peripheral nervous systems. CaB-D28K and CaR-N18 distributions are investigated to elucidate their potential role in maintaining retinal homeostasis under distinct light conditions and darkness. The results showed that light influences CaB-D28K and CaR-N18 distribution in the retina of adult zebrafish, suggesting that these CaBPs could be involved in the pathophysiology of retinal damage induced by the short-wavelength visible light spectrum.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the macular vascular flow in eyes with idiopathic macular pucker (EyeiMP), pre and post pars plana vitrectomy with epiretinal and limiting membranes peeling, and to compare it with the vascular flow in the healthy fellow eyes (Eyefellow), taken as physiological reference value. METHODS: 40 eyes of 40 patients were recruited. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was evaluated. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCT-angiography parameters were central foveal thickness (CFT), choroidal thickness (CT), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, vessel area density (VAD), vessel length fraction (VLF), vessel density index (VDI) of superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep vascular complex (DVC), choriocapillaris (CC) flow. Absolute and relative difference calculation was applied to evaluate macular vascular flow in EyeiMP adjusted for physiological changes detected in Eyefellow. FOLLOW-UP: 6 months. RESULTS: BCVA improved (p = 0.003) in all cases following surgery. CFT reduced postoperatively (p = 0.0138). FAZ area was smaller in EyeiMP than Eyefellow (p = 0.0071) preoperatively and postoperatively it shrank further (p = 0.0027). After surgery, inverse correlation between FAZ area and BCVA was detected (r-0.683). VAD of SCP was pre- and post-operatively higher in EyeiMP than Eyefellow (baseline p = 0.0344, 6th month p = 0.0466). Relative difference of VDI of SCP (p = 0.0096) and CC flow (p = 0.0013) at 6 months reduced. DVC flow changed significantly only in Eyefellow. CT increased post-operatively in both EyeiMP (p = 0.0345) and Eyefellow (p = 0.00423), but relative difference did not change. CONCLUSIONS: Vascular flow indices monitoring demonstrated significant changes in both eyes: EyeiMP and Eyefellow. Relative difference of vascular flow provided objective estimate of changes due to iMP surgery taking into account physiological changes in Eyefellow.

Purpose: To study the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and the vessel densities (VD) in diabetic patients using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and inner retinal layer changes to compare patients affected by type 1 diabetes (DM1) and type 2 diabetes (DM2). Methods: Cross-sectional observational study involving 150 eyes of 150 patients with DM1, and 155 eyes of 155 patients with DM2 with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and Ganglion cell layer (GCL) were evaluated. OCT-A studied both FAZ and VD at the level of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and the deep capillary plexus (DCP). Results: A statistically significant difference in FAZ area and foveal VD measured at the SCP (p < 0.001) was noted between DM1 and DM2 groups when comparing patients with mild and moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), while no differences were found in the severe NPDR and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) subgroups. Duration of diabetes and stage of DR were directly correlated with enlargement of FAZ area and inversely correlated with foveal VD measured at SCP. RNFL and GCL were not different between DM1 and DM2 groups. Conclusion: Changes in OCT-A parameters detected in FAZ area and VD of diabetic patients with different stages of DR may help to predict the risk for progression of the disease.

Purpose: To evaluate the response to lurbinectedin in a case of macular edema, secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Serial spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scans were taken in a 70-year-old man with a 24-month history of macular edema secondary to CRVO in the right eye. The patient underwent 5 cycles of chemotherapy with lurbinectedin between October 2018 and May 2019. Central macular thickness (CMT) before and after each chemotherapy cycle was measured together with progression analysis using the CIRRUS Zeiss software. Observations: SD-OCT showed alternating recurrence and resolution of macular edema closely related to the chemotherapy administrations. CMT oscillated between 496 and 284 µm during the follow-up. The macular edema was showed to decrease as soon as 4 days following chemotherapy. Conclusions and importance: Resolution of macular edema associated with CRVO was seen in our patient whilst undergoing chemotherapy with lurbinectedin. Lurbinectedin may play a role in the treatment of macular edema secondary to CRVO and may open new therapeutic indication for this natural marine molecule.

RESUMO

This commentary describes steps in ocular reconstruction surgery following ocular globe injuries in both the anterior and posterior segment causing corneal opacity and aphakia. The authors propose to reorder the sequence of surgical manoeuvres during pars plana vitrectomy combined with keratoplasty and aphakia treatment without capsular support and highlight the advantages in the choice of the intraocular lens to implant. A mental outline of all surgical manoeuvres, being aware of the complications that can arise during surgery and knowing the long-term benefits of making more careful choices, can make this surgery more effective and safer.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of combined Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) in treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this prospective study, 70 patients with refractory MGD were enrolled; group 1 received 3 consecutive sessions of IPL + LLLT treatment using Eye-light® on day 1, day 15 and day 45; group 2 received hyaluronate sodium 2 mg/ml drops 3 times a day for 6 months. Patients underwent at baseline, and after 3 and 6 months Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE), tear-film breakup time (TBUT), fluorescein ocular surface staining, meibum expressibility and quality evaluations. Keratograph 5M (Oculus, Germany) was used to assess NIBUT, tear meniscus height (TMH), meibography, and bulbar redness score. RESULTS: At 6 months a significant improvement of OSDI (p = 0.03), SANDE (p = 0.02), NIBUT (p = p < 0.0001), TMH (p = 0.04), TBUT (p = 0.02), corneal-conjunctival staining score (p = 0.02), lid margin score (p < 0.0001), and bulbar redness score (p = 0.001) were recorded in group 1. Comparing the two groups, statistically significant differences were observed at 6 months in TBUT (p = 0.03), lid margin score (p < 0.001), Meibum expressibility (p = 0.03) and NIBUT (p < 0.001). No adverse events were recorded throughout the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed the efficacy and safety of combined IPL and LLLT demonstrating its superiority compared to topical treatment.

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore and characterize healthy eye microbiota. METHODS: Healthy subjects older than 18 years were selected for this descriptive cross-sectional study. Samples were collected with an eSwab with 1 mL of Liquid Amies Medium (Copan Brescia, Italy). Following DNA extraction, libraries preparation, and amplification, PCR products were purified and end-repaired for barcode ligation. Libraries were pooled to a final concentration of 26 pM. Template preparation was performed with Ion Chef according to Ion 510, Ion 520, and Ion 530 Kit-Chef protocol. Sequencing of the amplicon libraries was carried out on a 520 or 530 chip using the Ion Torrent S5 system (Thermo Fisher; Waltham, MA, USA). Raw reads were analyzed with GAIA (v 2.02). RESULTS: Healthy eye microbiota is a low-diversity microbiome. The vast majority of the 137 analyzed samples were highly enriched with Staphylococcus, whereas only in a few of them, other genera such as Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Corynebacterium predominate. We found an average of 88 genera with an average Shannon index of 0.65. CONCLUSION: We identified nine different ECSTs. A better understanding of healthy eye microbiota has the potential to improve disease diagnosis and personalized regimens to promote health.

Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence, clinical ocular presentation and corneal healing in moderate and severe neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) caused by systemic diseases and treated with rh-NGF. Setting: Department of Biomedical and Dental Sciences and Morphofunctional Imaging, Ophthalmology Clinic, University of Messina, Italy. Design: Retrospective observational study of case series. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective observational study 11 patients (five female and six males) aged from 24 to 88 years (55.4 ± 21.3 years) with moderate and severe NK caused by systemic diseases were enrolled. The VAS questionnaire was dispensed. The ocular examination comprised slit lamp evaluation, ocular surface assessment with Keratograph 5M (Oculus, Germany), corneal sensitivity with Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer (Lunneaux, France) and corneal thickness measurement with AC-OCT (DRI, Triton, Topcon, Japan). The underlying systemic causes of NK were determined. Results: The main cause of NK was post-neuroma surgery (36%), followed by diabetes (18%). The remaining causes were rheumatoid arthritis (9%), post-traumatic (9%), post-surgery (9%), atopia (9%), Graves' disease (9%). Seven eyes presented severe grade of NK with corneal ulcer and in four a moderate grade was registered. The rh-NGF (Cenegermin) was administered with a standard protocol one drop six times daily for 8 weeks. The complete healing of all corneal defects was registered at the end of the treatment. Conclusions: The post-neuroma surgery was the most common cause of NK and severe grade was clinically more represented. The rh-NGF proved effective to promote corneal recovery with all defects healed after the treatment.

Choroidal metastases from breast cancer are the most common ocular malignancies in adults. We report a case of a 37-year-old female with a history of breast cancer who had a sudden blurred vision in her right eye. An ophthalmologic assessment revealed a dome-shaped lesion and a secondary retinal detachment with subretinal fluid in the left eye, suggestive of choroidal metastasis. Moreover, an MRI scan showed the presence of a single brain lesion. The patient was treated with stereotactic radiotherapy, with 300 cGy for 10 days. Six months after treatment, there was a regression of the mass and improvement of visual acuity. Stereotactic radiotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for choroidal metastases and should be considered to treat coexistent choroidal and brain metastatic lesions, to improve survival, visual function, and quality of life.

This study describes the clinical features of a pedigree with a novel retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator gene mutation in whom one hemizygous man has a typical manifesting phenotype and three heterozygous women demonstrate a typical carrier phenotype. A fourth heterozygous woman is described with a strikingly severe retinal phenotype and also harbors an independent disease-causing mutation in the OTX2 gene and an associated systemic phenotype. This study hypothesizes that the OTX2 mutation in combination with the familial retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator gene variant results in a more severe ocular phenotype than is seen in the other heterozygous women in this pedigree due to a loss of OTX2-mediated photoreceptor protection. PURPOSE: the aim of this study is to find a safer surgical approach in cataract surgery on eyes previously treated with radial keratotomy using clear corneal incisions. SETTING: Department of Biomedical and Dental Sciences and Morphofunctional Imaging, Ophthalmology Clinic, University of Messina, Messina, Italy. DESIGN: Prospective study. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on a group of 20 patients, 21 eyes with 16 RK incisions were evaluated for cataract phacoemulsification. Samples were divided into two groups: Group 1 underwent surgery with pre-operative one corneal stitch along radial keratotomy incisions near the main access site whereas Group 2 underwent modified surgery with two corneal stitches. RESULTS: After surgery, visual acuity, corneal hysteresis and corneal strength was evaluated. In all cases, an increased visual acuity was observed. Group 1 showed an UCVA of logMAR 0.22 ± 0.14, while group 2 presented a logMAR of 0.1 ± 0.07. Data did not show a statistically significant difference in UCVA after surgery between the two groups (P = 0.133). Instead, a significant difference in corneal hysteresis (CH), respectively with values of 8.65 ± 1.6 mmHg in group 1 and 9.2 ± 1.8 in group 2 (P = 0.031), and a corneal resistance factor (CRF) with values of 7.87 ± 1.4 mmHg in the first group and 8.65 ± 1.6 mmHg in the second one (P = 0.039) was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Double safe suture technique offers better stabilization of corneal structure during surgery in patients preventively treated with 16 incisions RK.
