Background and aims: In low endemic countries, screening for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in migrants is cost-effective in reducing the disease burden of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections, but linkage to care (LTC) remains a challenge. This study aims to guide future screening initiatives, with 3 objectives: 1. to compare LTC between different ethnic groups screened for HBsAg with point-of-care testing (POCT) in an outreach setting; 2. to estimate the proportion of HBsAg seropositivity for ethnic minorities; and 3. to investigate the association between seropositivity and HBV risk factors. Methods: Opportunistic outreach screenings using finger prick HBsAg tests were performed at civic integration programmes between 11/2017 and 09/2022. If an individual tested positive, an appointment was given immediately at the outpatient hepatology clinic for follow-up and confirmation of HBsAg positivity in blood. Dedicated personnel contacted these individuals to motivate them for further LTC, which was defined as being assessed by a hepatologist, a blood test and an abdominal ultrasound. Results: A total of 677 people from different ethnicities (Asian, Middle Eastern and African) were serologically screened using POCT. The observed positivity for HBsAg was 3.4 % (95% CI 2.17-5.05, 23/677). Apart from ethnicity and male sex, none of the surveyed HBV risk factors were associated with HBsAg seropositivity. All HBsAg positive individuals were linked to care and assessed by a hepatologist, despite the COVID-19 pandemic increase in time to follow-up of 82 days (95% CI 51-112 days) vs. 24 days (95% CI 5-43 days, p = 0.008)).Among HBV-infected patients, 31.8% (7/22), 100 % (22/22) and 26.1% (6/23) met the criteria for treatment indication, intrafamilial transmission risk and need for hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance, respectively. Conclusion: The proportion of HBsAg seropositivity in ethnic minorities was 3.4%. POCT and commitment of dedicated personnel can overcome previously identified barriers resulting in a 100% LTC.

The natural course of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections follows distinct clinical disease phases, characterized by fluctuating levels of serum HBV DNA and ALT. The immune cells and their features that govern these clinical disease transitions remain unknown. In the current study, we performed RNA sequencing on purified B cells from blood (n = 42) and liver (n = 10) of healthy controls and chronic HBV patients. We found distinct gene expression profiles between healthy controls and chronic HBV patients, as evidenced by 190 differentially expressed genes (DEG), but also between the clinical phenotypes of a chronic HBV infection (17-110 DEG between each phase). Numerous immune pathways, including the B cell receptor pathway were upregulated in liver B cells when compared to peripheral B cells. Further investigation of the detected DEG suggested an activation of B cells during HBeAg seroconversion and an active regulation of B cell signalling in the liver.

Exhaustion of antigen-specific T-cells in order to escape immune destruction is frequently seen in chronic viral infection and different types of cancer. Blockade of overexpressed negative co-stimulatory pathways, a process known as immune checkpoint modulation, is a promising novel therapy that could improve the treatment of liver diseases with features of T cell exhaustion. We present a case of a 54-year-old hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive patient with an acute flare of hepatitis during nivolumab treatment for a stage IV lung carcinoma, an anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) immunotherapy. Retrospective testing of HCV RNA documented infection more than 6 months ago. Nivolumab treatment was associated with an alanine aminotransferase (ALT) flare reaching a peak value of 663 U/L, along with bilirubin levels of 0.74 mg/dL and no signs of coagulopathy. The assumption of a nivolumab-associated autoimmune hepatitis led to the interruption of the immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment. However, a subsequent 1-log decrease of HCV RNA load was noticed, which raised the possibility of an immune reconstitution against the HCV-infected hepatocytes with cell lysis. Liver biopsy specimen demonstrated no evidence for autoimmune liver disease or fibrosis. Clinical evolution was favorable and serum transaminases returned to normal levels and HCV RNA load increased to baseline values following nivolumab cessation. The current case suggests an anti-HCV activity of anti-PD-1 treatment in the setting of concomitant HCV viremia and lung carcinoma.

Background and Aims: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a multisystem condition, involving the liver, adipose tissue, and immune system. Regulatory T (Treg) cells are a subset of T cells that exert an immune-controlling effect. Previously, a reduction of Treg cells in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was shown to be associated with a more severe degree of liver disease. We aimed to correct this immune disruption through adoptive cell transfer (ACT) of Treg cells. Methods: Male 8-week-old C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat high-fructose diet (HFHFD) for 20 weeks. Treg cells were isolated from the spleens of healthy 8 to 10-week-old C57BL/6J mice and were adoptively transferred to HFHFD-fed mice. PBS-injected mice served as controls. Plasma ALT and lipid levels were determined. Liver and adipose tissue were assessed histologically. Cytotoxic T (Tc), Treg, T helper (Th) 1 and Th17 cells were characterized in VAT, liver, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), blood, and spleen via flow cytometry. Gene expression analysis was performed in SAT and VAT of mice fed either the HFHFD or a control diet for 10-32 weeks. Results: ACT increased Treg cells in SAT, but not in any of the other tissues. Moreover, the ACT induced a decrease in Th1 cells in SAT, liver, blood, and spleen. Higher plasma ALT levels and a higher degree of steatosis were observed in ACT mice, whereas the other HFHFD-induced metabolic and histologic disruptions were unaffected. Expression analysis of genes related to Treg-cell proliferation revealed a HFHFD-induced decrease in all investigated genes in the SAT, while in the VAT the expression of these genes was largely unaffected, except for a decrease in Pparg. Conclusion: ACT of Treg cells in HFHFD-fed mice exacerbated hepatic steatosis, which was possibly related to the increase of Treg cells in the SAT and/or the general decrease in Th1 cells. Moreover, the HFHFD-induced decrease in Pparg expression appeared critical in the decrease of Treg cells at the level of the VAT and the inability to replenish the amount of Treg cells by the ACT, while the mechanism of Treg cell accumulation at the level of the SAT remained unclear.

Background: This study compares venepuncture versus point-of-care (POC) HBsAg tests on screening cost and linkage to care in prospective outreach screenings in an Asian population in three major cities in Belgium between 10/2014 and 5/2018. Methods: Two community outreach screening programs were organised between 10/2014 and 5/2018. The first screening program used venepuncture and serologic testing for HBsAg. In the second program, HBsAg was tested in finger stick blood POC tests. Positive results were confirmed during outpatient visits with serologic testing. Linkage to care was defined as having received specialist care follow-up with at least one abdominal ultrasound within three months of screening. Results: For 575 participating individuals, 571 valid results were obtained, 456 with venepuncture, and 115 using POC testing. Overall HBsAg seroprevalence was 6.8%. Linkage to care was higher when using POC testing compared to venepuncture (86% or n = 6/7 versus 34% or n = 11/32; p = 0.020). The POC screening program was economically more attractive with a total cost of 1,461.8 or 12.7 per person screened compared to 24,819 or 54.0 per person screened when using venepuncture testing. Results and an appointment for specialist care follow-up were given onsite with POC testing, while with venepuncture testing; results were sent within 20-45 days. Conclusion: In an Asian migrant population in Belgium with an HBsAg seroprevalence of 6.8%, HBV screening based on POC tests resulted in lower costs per person screened (76.5% lower), and higher linkage to care (2.5 times).

Recent European studies suggest an emergence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection. We evaluated trends in birth cohort-specific HEV seroprevalence and regional differences in Belgium. HEV IgG seroprevalence was analysed on national serum banks (1579 and 2087 samples for 2006 and 2014, respectively. Hepatitis E virus antigen was tested on positive samples. Observed data were modelled using a generalized additive model with a complementary log-log link. No significant differences between birth cohorts or sexes were found. Modelling identified the individual's age and province as relevant factors. The probability of HEV seropositivity increases significantly with age. An estimated total of 434 819 (yearly rate of 54,352) (sero-)infections were found between 2006 and 2014. Overall, HEV IgG seroprevalences were 4.1% (64/1579, 95% CI 3.1-5.1) and 5.8% (121/2087, CI 4.8-6.9) in 2006 and 2014, respectively. Observed HEV antigen seroprevalence was 0.027% (1/3666) for the entire cohort. These results show stable HEV IgG seroprevalence in Belgium.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a multisystem condition, implicating liver and adipose tissue. Although the general involvement of the innate and adaptive immune system has been established, we aimed to define the exact role of the functionally diverse T-cell subsets in NASH pathogenesis through diet reversal and immunologic modulation. METHODS: Multiple experimental set-ups were used in 8-week-old C57BL/6J mice, including prolonged high-fat high-fructose diet (HFHFD) feeding, diet reversal from HFHFD to control diet, and administration of anti-CD8a and anti-interleukin 17A antibodies. Plasma alanine aminotransferase, glucose, and lipid levels were determined. Liver and adipose tissue were assessed histologically. Cytotoxic T (Tc), regulatory T, T helper (Th) 1, and Th17 cells were characterized in liver and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) via flow cytometry and RNA analysis. RESULTS: HFHFD feeding induced the metabolic syndrome and NASH, which coincided with an increase in hepatic Th17, VAT Tc, and VAT Th17 cells, and a decrease in VAT regulatory T cells. Although diet reversal induced a phenotypical metabolic and hepatic normalization, the observed T-cell disruptions persisted. Treatment with anti-CD8a antibodies decreased Tc cell numbers in all investigated tissues and induced a biochemical and histologic attenuation of the HFHFD-induced NASH. Conversely, anti-interleukin 17A antibodies decreased hepatic inflammation without affecting other features of NASH or the metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: HFHFD feeding induces important immune disruptions in multiple hepatic and VAT T-cell subsets, refractory to diet reversal. In particular, VAT Tc cells are critically involved in NASH pathogenesis, linking adipose tissue inflammation to liver disease.

Hemodialysis-related portosystemic encephalopathy (HRPSE) is a clinical phenomenon where portosystemic encephalopathy (PSE) develops without liver dysfunction, usually caused by changes in the portosystemic blood flow related to hemodialysis. We describe the case of a 22-year old patient with a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) who developed HRPSE several months after initiation of hemodialysis. Despite initial therapy with laxatives and neomycin symptoms recurred. It was only after relocation of the hemodialysis catheter from the superior caval vein to the femoral vein that symptoms completely resolved.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that a group of patients with cirrhosis receiving a liver transplantation for hepatocellular cancer (HCC) beyond the Milan Criteria (MC) can achieve a similar outcome compared to patients within these criteria. This study aims to investigate the value of the Asan critera (AC), up-to-7 criteria (UT7), French alpha-foetoprotein (AFP) model and Metroticket 2.0 (MT2.0) model compared to the MC. METHODS: 526 patients transplanted for non-metastatic HCC were analyzed. Patient groups within and beyond MC and extended criteria were determined according to radiological assessment and AFP value at listing. RESULTS: Overall survival (OS) and recurrence (RR) rates were similar between patients within MC and all extended criteria. Five-year OS within MC was 71.3% compared to 70.9% for AC, 71.4% for UT7, 69.7% for AFP-model and 71.0% for MT2.0 criteria. Five-year RR within MC was 12.3% compared to 13.5% for AC, 13.0% for UT7, 14.3% for AFP-model and 13.2% for MT2.0 criteria. Patients beyond MC but within the extended criteria had tendency towards higher recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: All validated extended criteria (AC, UT7, AFP-model and MT2.0) could be proposed as alternatives to the MC with similar outcome. Prospective data are awaited to assess recurrence beyond MC.

Introduction: Viral hepatitis is a worldwide, important health issue. The optimal management of viral hepatitis infections faces numerous challenges. In this paper, we describe how biobanking of biological samples derived from viral hepatitis patients collected both in-hospital and during community outreach screenings provides a unique collection of samples. Materials and Methods: All samples and materials were provided with a study code within the SLIMS system Study protocols and an informed consent form were approved by the Antwerp University Hospital/University of Antwerp Ethical Committee. Systematic biobanking was initiated in October 2014. Collected sample types include: (1) serum and plasma of all newly diagnosed HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV positive patients; (2) left-over serum and plasma samples from all PCR analyses for HBV and HCV performed in the context of routine clinical care; (3) left-over liver tissue not needed for routine histological diagnosis after liver biopsy; and (4) additional virus-specific, appropriate sample types using a scientific rationale-based approach. A community outreach screening program was performed in three major Belgian cities. Serum, EDTA, Tempus Blood RNA and BD Vacutainer CPT were collected. CPT tubes were centrifuged on-site and mononuclear cells collected within 24 h. Results: Concerning community screening: 298 individuals supplied all 4 sample types. Samples were stored at -150°C and were logged in the biobank SLIMS database. Samples were used for HBV-related immunological and biomarker studies. DNA isolated from plasma samples derived from chronic HBV patients was used to investigate Single Nucleotide Polymorphism rs 1790008. Serum samples collected from chronic hepatitis C patients were used to assess the efficacy of HCV treatment. Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) isolated from chronic HBV patients and healthy controls were used for different immunological study purposes. Virus isolated from biobanked stool of a chronic hepatitis E patient was used to establish a mouse model for Hepatitis E infections, allowing further HEV virology studies. Conclusion: The establishment of a biobank with samples collected both in-hospital and during community-outreach screening resulted in a unique, continuously expanding collection of biological samples which provides an excellent platform for prompt answers to clinically and translational relevant research questions.

BACKGROUND: About 15% of liver transplantations (LTs) in Eurotransplant are currently performed in patients with a high-urgency (HU) status. Patients who have acute liver failure (ALF) or require an acute retransplantation can apply for this status. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of this prioritization. METHODS: Patients who were listed for LT with HU status from January 1, 2007, up to December 31, 2015, were included. Waiting list and posttransplantation outcomes were evaluated and compared with a reference group of patients with laboratory Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score (labMELD) scores ≥40 (MELD 40+). RESULTS: In the study period, 2299 HU patients were listed for LT. Ten days after listing, 72% of all HU patients were transplanted and 14% of patients deceased. Patients with HU status for primary ALF showed better patient survival at 3 years (69%) when compared with patients in the MELD 40+ group (57%). HU patients with labMELD ≥45 and patients with HU status for acute retransplantation and labMELD ≥35 have significantly inferior survival at 3-year follow-up of 46% and 42%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Current prioritization for patients with ALF is highly effective in preventing mortality on the waiting list. Although patients with HU status for ALF have good outcomes, survival is significantly inferior for patients with a high MELD score or for retransplantations. With the current scarcity of livers in mind, we should discuss whether potential recipients for a second or even third retransplantation should still receive absolute priority, with HU status, over other recipients with an expected, substantially better prognosis after transplantation.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most prevalent chronic liver disease. The presence of portal hypertension has been demonstrated in NAFLD prior to development of inflammation or fibrosis, and is a result of extrahepatic and intrahepatic factors, principally driven by vascular dysfunction. An increased intrahepatic vascular resistance potentially contributes to progression of NAFLD via intralobular hypoxia. However, the exact mechanisms underlying vascular dysfunction in NAFLD remain unknown. This study investigates systemic hemodynamics and both aortic and intrahepatic vascular reactivity in a rat model of severe steatosis. Wistar rats were fed a methionine-choline-deficient diet, inducing steatosis, or control diet for 4 weeks. In vivo hemodynamic measurements, aortic contractility studies, and in situ liver perfusion experiments were performed. The mean arterial blood pressure was lower and portal blood pressure was higher in steatosis compared to controls. The maximal contraction force in aortic rings from steatotic rats was markedly reduced compared to controls. While blockade of nitric oxide (NO) production did not reveal any differences, cyclooxygenase (COX) blockade reduced aortic reactivity in both controls and steatosis, whereas effects were more pronounced in controls. Effects could be attributed to COX-2 iso-enzyme activity. In in situ liver perfusion experiments, exogenous NO donation or endogenous NO stimulation reduced the transhepatic pressure gradient (THPG), whereas NO synthase blockade increased the THPG only in steatosis, but not in controls. Alpha-1-adrenergic stimulation and endothelin-1 induced a significantly more pronounced increase in THPG in steatosis compared to controls. Our results demonstrate that severe steatosis, without inflammation or fibrosis, induces portal hypertension and signs of a hyperdynamic circulation, accompanied by extrahepatic arterial hyporeactivity and intrahepatic vascular hyperreactivity. The arterial hyporeactivity seems to be NO-independent, but appears to be mediated by specific COX-2-related mechanisms. Besides, the increased intrahepatic vascular resistance in steatosis appears not to be NO-related but rather to vasoconstrictor hyperreactivity.

The epidemiology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections is continuously evolving. Updated data on dual HBV and HCV infection are still needed. AIMS: To assess the main characteristics of patients with HBV and HCV dual infection, to compare these with those of patients infected with either HBV or HCV and, among patients with dual infection, to assess fibrosis according to HCV replication. METHODS: Data of 23 patients with dual infection were compared to data from 92 age and sex-matched HBV or HCV monoinfected patients. RESULTS: Patients with dual infection were more often immigrants from Africa or Asia than HCV or HBV patients (52% vs. 20% and 22%, respectively, P=0.01). Intravenous drug use was the route of transmission in 22% of patients with dual infection, which was less frequent than in HCV patients (41%) but more frequent than in HBV patients (0%). Extensive fibrosis or cirrhosis was as frequent among dual-infected patients as among those with HCV or chronic hepatitis B infection (19% vs. 29% vs. 14%, respectively, P=0.4), even when fibrosis stage was reported considering the duration of infection. In dual-infected patients, the prevalence of extensive fibrosis or cirrhosis was similar in patients with and without detectable HCV RNA (18% vs. 20%). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with HBV and HCV dual infection were more often immigrants from Africa or Asia and had similar fibrosis stages than HCV or HBV monoinfected patients. In patients with dual infection, extensive fibrosis or cirrhosis was not associated with HCV replication.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence is soaring with the obesity pandemic, but the pathogenic mechanisms leading to the progression toward active nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis, major causes of liver-related death, are poorly defined. To identify key components during the progression toward NASH and fibrosis, we investigated the liver transcriptome in a human cohort of NASH patients. The transition from histologically proven fatty liver to NASH and fibrosis was characterized by gene expression patterns that successively reflected altered functions in metabolism, inflammation, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. A meta-analysis combining our and public human transcriptomic datasets with murine models of NASH and fibrosis defined a molecular signature characterizing NASH and fibrosis and evidencing abnormal inflammation and extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis. Dermatopontin expression was found increased in fibrosis, and reversal of fibrosis after gastric bypass correlated with decreased dermatopontin expression. Functional studies in mice identified an active role for dermatopontin in collagen deposition and fibrosis. PPARα activation lowered dermatopontin expression through a transrepressive mechanism affecting the Klf6/TGFß1 pathway. Liver fibrotic histological damages are thus characterized by the deregulated expression of a restricted set of inflammation- and ECM-related genes. Among them, dermatopontin may be a valuable target to reverse the hepatic fibrotic process.

Background and Aims: Due to the shortage of donor livers, minor ABO-incompatible liver transplantations are commonly performed. Together with the allograft, immunocompetent B-lymphocytes, called passenger lymphocytes, are transplanted. In case of minor ABO-incompatibility, these passenger lymphocytes produce antibodies directed towards the recipient's red blood cells, which causes immune-mediated hemolysis, also known as the passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS). Although this is a self-limiting disorder, serious complications can occur, including graft failure. Retrospectively, we evaluated the role of PLS in minor ABO-incompatible liver transplantations performed at our center. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted for all minor ABO-incompatible liver transplantations performed at the Antwerp University Hospital between 2003 and 2015. All patient files were inspected for clinical and laboratory findings. In cases of PLS diagnosis, the applied treatment was also studied. Results: In total, 10 patients underwent a minor ABO-incompatible liver transplantation and 4 showed signs of PLS. All 4 PLS patients were treated with different therapeutic strategy, corresponding to the severity of hemolysis. In all 4 cases, PLS resolved following treatment. Conclusion: When performing minor ABO-incompatible liver transplantations, knowledge of PLS is elemental. Next to a high index of clinical suspicion, we suggest routine screening for markers of hemolysis, with emphasis on haptoglobin level and direct antiglobulin test, weekly in the first 4 weeks post-transplantation as well as in case of a sudden hemoglobin drop within the first 3 months after transplantation. Peri- and postoperative transfusion support using donor-compatible blood has been suggested to prevent the occurrence or limit the extent of hemolysis.

AIM: Analysis of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) concentrations in hair is increasingly used to estimate the consumption of alcohol of the prior months. Linear correlations between the amount of alcohol consumed and the concentration of EtG in hair have been reported, and several variables that may influence this correlation have been investigated: e.g. cosmetic hair treatments, gender influences or hair color. Here, we investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on this correlation. METHODS: A post hoc analysis on the influence of BMI on the relation between amounts of alcohol consumed and the measured EtG concentrations in hair in 199 participants. RESULTS: Our data show higher EtG concentrations in participants with high BMI (≥25) compared to participants with low BMI (<25) (P = 0.001) across a wide range of amounts of alcohol consumed. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that BMI should be taken into account when interpreting hair EtG concentrations. SHORT SUMMARY: Ethyl glucuronide concentrations in hair (hEtG) can be used to estimate the consumption of alcohol of the prior months. Body mass index (BMI) influences this relation and BMI should be taken into account when interpreting hEtG concentrations in participants with high BMI (≥25) compared to participants with low BMI (<25).

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected patients have an almost 100-fold increased risk to develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is the fifth most common and third most deadly cancer worldwide. Up to 50% of newly diagnosed HCC cases are attributed to HBV infection. Early detection improves survival and can be achieved through regular screening. Six-monthly abdominal ultrasound, either alone or in combination with alpha-fetoprotein serum levels, has been widely endorsed for this purpose. Both techniques however yield limited diagnostic accuracy, which is not improved when they are combined. Alternative circulating or histological markers to predict or diagnose HCC are therefore urgently needed. Recent advances in systems biology technologies have enabled the identification of several new putative circulating biomarkers. Although results from studies assessing combinations of these biomarkers are promising, evidence for their clinical utility remains low. In addition, most of the studies conducted so far show limitations in design. Attention must be paid for instance to different ethnicities and different etiologies when studying biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma. This review provides an overview on the current understandings and recent progress in the field of diagnostic and predictive circulating biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma in chronically infected HBV patients and discusses the future prospects.

Autophagy and the unfolded protein response (UPR) are key cellular homeostatic mechanisms and are both involved in liver diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Although increasing but conflicting results link these mechanisms to lipid metabolism, their role and potential cross talk herein have been poorly investigated. Therefore, we assessed the effects of hepatocyte-specific autophagy deficiency on liver parenchyma, the UPR, and lipid metabolism. Adult hepatocellular-specific autophagy-deficient mice (Atg7F/FAlb-Cre+) were compared with their autophagy-competent littermates (Atg7+/+Alb-Cre+). Livers were analyzed by electron microscopy, histology, real-time qPCR, and Western blotting. Atg7F/FAlb-Cre+ mice developed hepatomegaly with significant parenchymal injury, as shown by inflammatory infiltrates, hepatocellular apoptosis, pericellular fibrosis, and a pronounced ductular reaction. Surprisingly, the UPR exhibited a pathway-selective pattern upon autophagy deficiency. The activity of the adaptive activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) pathway was abolished, whereas the proapoptotic protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase pathway was increased compared with Atg7+/+Alb-Cre+ mice. The inositol-requiring enzyme-1α signal was unaltered. Fasting-induced steatosis was absent in Atg7F/FAlb-Cre+ mice. Remarkably, some isolated islands of fat-containing and autophagy-competent cells were observed in these livers. Hepatocellular autophagy is essential for parenchymal integrity in mice. Moreover, in the case of autophagy deficiency, the three different UPR branches are pathway selectively modulated. Attenuation of the ATF6 pathway might explain the observed impairment of fasting-induced steatosis. Finally, autophagy and lipid droplets are directly linked to each other.
