RESUMO

Quantum dots (QDs) have garnered a significant amount of attention as promising memristive materials owing to their size-dependent tunable bandgap, structural stability, and high level of applicability for neuromorphic computing. Despite these advantageous properties, the development of QD-based memristors has been hindered by challenges in understanding and adjusting the resistive switching (RS) behavior of QDs. Herein, we propose three types of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QD-based memristors to elucidate the RS mechanism, employing a thin poly(methyl methacrylate) layer. This approach not only allows us to identify which carriers (electron or hole) are trapped within the QD layer but also successfully demonstrates QD-based synaptic devices. Furthermore, to utilize the QD memristor as a synapse, long-term potentiation/depression (LTP/LTD) characteristics are measured, resulting in a low nonlinearity of LTP/LTD at 0.1/1. On the basis of the LTP/LTD characteristics, single-layer perceptron simulations were performed using the Extended Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology, verifying a maximum recognition rate of 91.46%.

Ultraviolet (UV) absorbers are chemical substances that are widely used as defenses against the damaging effects of solar radiations. UV absorbers, despite their benefits, are categorized as emerging pollutants because they have been demonstrated to be mutagenic, toxic, pseudo-persistent, bio-accumulative, and to have strong estrogenic effects. Because of their common use in personal care products, they continue to enter the environment. Several food samples, particularly those derived from aquatic sources, have been found to be contaminated with these compounds. Toxic effects on aquatic life, such as metabolic imbalance and developmental toxicity, result from the continued presence of UV absorbers in aquatic bodies. In addition, the degree of exposure to these pollutants in foods should be examined because there are certain risks associated with their consumption by humans. Therefore, this review focuses on the toxicity, analytical techniques, occurrence, and risk assessments of UV absorbers found in food.

Many studies have attempted to classify small drones in response to threats posed by the technical progress of small drones. Recently, small drones have been classified utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with micro-Doppler signature (MDS) images generated from frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radars. This study proposes a comprehensive method for classifying small drones in real-time using high-quality MDS images and an ultra-lightweight CNN. The proposed comprehensive method comprises an MDS image generation technique, which can improve the quality of MDS images generated via FMCW radars, and the ultra-lightweight CNN with high accuracy performance despite its remarkable lightness. Experimental results show that the proposed MDS image generation technique increases the accuracy of CNNs by enhancing the MDS image quality. This is further verified using the results of uncertainty quantification. The proposed ultra-lightweight CNN significantly decreases the computational cost while achieving high accuracy. Finally, we demonstrate that the proposed comprehensive method successfully classifies small drones from far distances with high efficiency and accuracy: the maximum and average accuracies for classification are 100% and 99.21%, respectively, and the numbers of parameters, nodes, and floating-point operations of the proposed ultra-lightweight CNN are approximately 4.88 K, 21.51 K, and 31.52 M, respectively.

The initial electrical characteristics and bias stabilities of thin-film transistors (TFTs) are vital factors regarding the practical use of electronic devices. In this study, the dependence of positive bias stress (PBS) instability on an initial threshold voltage (VTH) and its origin were analyzed by understanding the roles of slow and fast traps in solution-processed oxide TFTs. To control the initial VTH of oxide TFTs, the indium oxide (InOx) semiconductor was doped with aluminum (Al), which functioned as a carrier suppressor. The concentration of oxygen vacancies decreased as the Al doping concentration increased, causing a positive VTH shift in the InOx TFTs. The VTH shift (∆VTH) caused by PBS increased exponentially when VTH was increased, and a distinct tendency was observed as the gate bias stress increased due to a high vertical electric field in the oxide dielectric. In addition, the recovery behavior was analyzed to reveal the influence of fast and slow traps on ∆VTH by PBS. Results revealed that the effect of the slow trap increased as the VTH moved in the positive direction; this occured because the main electron trap location moved away from the interface as the Fermi level approached the conduction band minimum. Understanding the correlation between VTH and PBS instability can contribute to optimizing the fabrication of oxide TFT-based circuits for electronic applications.

We propose that the post-deposition oxidation of the IGZO surface is essential for improving the interface quality, with Al2O3 prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) employing a common metal precursor trimethylaluminum (TMA). Here, the ALD-Al2O3 process was conducted using H2O as an oxidant at a substrate temperature of 150 °C after IGZO deposition. The depth-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data reveal the defect-rich and poor interface of the standard Al2O3/IGZO stack due to the redox reaction between the IGZO surface and TMA. The anion character of the IGZO was modified by introducing fluorine, which is known as a stability enhancer for oxide semiconductors. We highlight that the presence of the fluorine also improves the interface quality with ALD-Al2O3. As a consequence of the fluorine incorporation prior to the ALD-Al2O3 process, the chemical reduction reaction of the IGZO surface was effectively alleviated, resulting in a defect-passivated and sharp interface owing to the strong oxidizing nature of the fluorine.

Administering more than 10 times the therapeutic dose of insulin is extremely rare in diabetic dogs and is life threatening with hypoglycemia and seizures if not accompanied by appropriate treatment. A 15-year-old, castrated male miniature poodle dog managed for diabetes presented with depression, disorientation, ataxia, and cluster seizures. The dog had been administered 11.1 U/kg of neutral protamine hegadorn (NPH) insulin (10 times the prescribed dose) 3 h before the onset of symptoms. Blood analysis revealed hypoglycemia, with a circulating glucose level of <50 mg/dL. To treat the hypoglycemia-induced seizures, dextrose was repeatedly administered intravenously. Repeated generalized seizures were treated with anticonvulsants and intermittent mannitol. Since refractory hypoglycemia persisted 24 h after the insulin overdose, it was decided to proceed with glucagon treatment (15-30 ng/kg/min titrated to the blood glucose level after a loading dose of 50 ng/kg intravenous bolus infusion). After 37 h of glucagon treatment, blood glucose levels stabilized. After entering a hyperglycemic state, NPH insulin was administered to manage insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. This is the first case documented of successful treatment with glucagon, anticonvulsants and intermittent mannitol for refractory hypoglycemia and seizure caused by fatal insulin overdose. Thus, it has great clinical value in veterinary medicine.

The Warburg effect is a phenomenon in which cancer cells rely primarily on glycolysis rather than oxidative phosphorylation, even in the presence of oxygen. Although evidence of its involvement in cell proliferation has been discovered, the advantages of the Warburg effect in cancer cell survival under treatment have not been fully elucidated. In recent years, the metabolic characteristics of radioresistant cancer cells have been evaluated, enabling an extension of the original concept of the Warburg effect. In this review, we focused on the role of the Warburg effect in redox homeostasis and DNA damage repair, two critical factors contributing to radioresistance. In addition, we highlighted the metabolic involvement in the radioresistance of cancer stem cells, which is the root cause of tumor recurrence. Finally, we summarized radiosensitizing drugs that target the Warburg effect. Insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the Warburg effect and radioresistance can provide valuable information for developing strategies to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy and provide future directions for successful cancer therapy.

High-performance oxide transistors have recently attracted significant attention for use in various electronic applications, such as displays, sensors, and back-end-of-line transistors. In this study, we demonstrate atomically thin indium-oxide (InOx) semiconductors using a solution process for high-performance thin-film transistors (TFTs). To achieve superior field-effect mobility and switching characteristics in TFTs, the bandgap and thickness of the InOx were tuned by controlling the InOx solution molarity. As a result, a high field-effect mobility and on/off-current ratio of 13.95 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 1.42 × 1010, respectively, were achieved using 3.12-nanometer-thick InOx. Our results showed that the charge transport of optimized InOx with a thickness of 3.12 nm is dominated by percolation conduction due to its low surface roughness and appropriate carrier concentration. Furthermore, the atomically thin InOx TFTs showed superior positive and negative gate bias stress stabilities, which are important in electronic applications. The proposed oxide TFTs could provide an effective means of the fabrication of scalable, high-throughput, and high-performance transistors for next-generation electronic applications.

The interest in low processing temperature for printable transistors is rapidly increasing with the introduction of a new form factor in electronics and the growing importance of high throughput. This paper reports the fabrication of low-temperature-processable enhancement-mode amorphous oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) using the solution process. A facile low-pressure annealing (LPA) method is proposed for the activation of indium oxide (InOx) semiconductors at a significantly low processing temperature of 200 °C. Thermal annealing at a pressure of about ~10 Torr induces effective condensation in InOx even at a low temperature. As a result, the fabricated LPA InOx TFTs not only functioned in enhancement mode but also exhibited outstanding switching characteristics with a high on/off current ratio of 4.91 × 109. Furthermore, the LPA InOx TFTs exhibit stable operation under bias stress compared to the control device due to the low concentration of hydroxyl defects.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the long-term maintenance of each approach of sinus elevation, the crestal approach and lateral approach, by comparing the radiographic results of each technique. Materials and Methods: In total, 103 patients who had undergone an implant procedure with either the crestal approach or lateral approach method applied to their maxillary molar edentulous area were included. Using orthopantomographs, the radiographic changes were consistently evaluated over 3 years after the procedure (immediately after procedure and 1 year, 2 years and 3 years after implant placement) Results: The radiographic evaluation after 3 years of implantation with sinus elevation showed a significant amount of bone formation (8.07 mm for crestal approach and 12.00 mm for lateral approach method). The largest amount of grafted height loss occurred during the 1 year, but the resorption was minimal (0.98 mm for crestal approach and 0.95 mm for lateral approach method) over the entire 3 years. Conclusions: Although the lateral approach showed more bone growth, the amount of bone resorption was similar to that of the crestal approach. Both methods showed the highest amount of bone resorption in the first year, and the amount of change thereafter was insignificant. It is judged that both methods can be used according to the situation to help implant placement.

This study examined the occurrence of emotion types and the contents and meanings of individual emotion types to improve the quality of life of South Korean senior patients in convalescent hospitals. This research is a sequential mixed study in which we conducted emotion frequency and content analyses with 20 elderly resident patients in a convalescent hospital. In the emotion frequency analysis, we performed emotion occurrence frequency analysis and clustering to create groups of subjects that showed similar distributions of emotions. The study results found that South Korean senior patients displayed six major emotions: joy, sorrow, anger, surprise, fear, and tranquility, including mixed emotional states. In the emotion content analysis, we used NVivo to categorize and analyze the interview contents based on emotion types. The study results show the characteristics of emotions according to patients' treatment and recovery, life within narrow boundaries, relationships with new people and family, and the appearances of themselves that they could not easily but must accept. In addition, these characteristics appeared in health, environment, relationships, and psychological structures. Ultimately, the study results suggest that improving the quality of life of South Korean senior patients requires understanding of their emotions and examining diverse emotions in multiple dimensions.

The interleukin-1 receptor-related kinase 4 (IRAK4), downstream of myd88, plays an essential role in hyperactive TLR signalling seen in some B-cell lymphomas. In particular, efficient IRAK4 inhibitors of activated B-cell subtype of human diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are being developed. However, the anticancer effect of IRAK-4 inhibitors in veterinary medicine has not been elucidated. It is therefore explored in this study involving the GL-1 and CL-1 canine lymphoma cell lines in vitro. MyD88 expression was analysed using polymerase chain reaction. GL-1 and CL-1 cells were subjected to concentration- and time-dependent treatment with an IRAK-4 inhibitor and assessed for viability, TLR signalling association and apoptosis using a cell counting Kit-8 assay, Western blotting and flow cytometry. The GL-1 and CL-1 cells exhibited enhanced MyD88 expression, however, canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (cPBMCs) did not. The IRAK-4 inhibitor reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, significantly reduced the phosphorylation of molecules associated with TLR signalling at IC50 such as IRAK1, IRAK4, NF-κB and STAT3, and induced apoptosis in GL-1 and CL-1 cells. The anticancer effect of the IRAK-4 inhibitor on canine lymphoma cells is mediated by apoptosis via downregulation of TLR signalling.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by chronic, relapsing skin inflammation (eczema) with itchy sensation. Keratinocytes, which are located at the outermost part of our body, are supposed to play important roles at the early phase of type 2 inflammation including AD pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether keratinocytes-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) could be produced by the allergens or non-allergens, and the keratinocytes-derived ROS could modulate a set of biomarkers for type 2 inflammation of the skin. METHODS: Normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) were treated with an allergen of house dust mites (HDM) or a non-allergen of compound 48/80 (C48/80). Then, biomarkers for type 2 inflammation of the skin including those for neurogenic inflammation were checked by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western immunoblot experiments. RESULTS: HDM or C48/80 was found to upregulate expression levels of our tested biomarkers, including type 2 T helper-driving pathway (KLK5, PAR2, and NFκB), epithelial-cell-derived cytokines (thymic stromal lymphopoietin, interleukin [IL]-25, IL-33), and neurogenic inflammation (NGF, CGRP). The HDM- or C-48/80-induced expression levels of the biomarkers could be blocked by an antioxidant treatment with 5 mM N-acetyl-cysteine. In contrast, pro-oxidant treatment with 1 mM H2O2 could upregulate expression levels of the tested biomarkers in NHEKs. CONCLUSION: Our results reveal that keratinocytes-derived ROS, irrespective to their origins from allergens or non-allergens, have a potential to induce type 2 inflammation of AD skin.

The pollution status of particulate matter (PM) in a subway system and technological trends in their reduction were discussed in this study. The levels of PM2.5 and PM10 are generally found to be higher in the underground platforms and tunnels than those in the outdoor air. It has also been reported that the composition of fine dust in the subway consists of various substances including heavy metals (like Fe), carbonaceous matter, and solvent extractable organic matter (SEOM). It was confirmed that subway dust was created mainly by wearing on wheels, rails, and brakes. In addition, the concentration of PM in such environment was influenced not only by internal factors (eg, operating conditions of trains and ventilation systems, number of passengers, and the structure of subway stations) but also by outside factors (eg, ambient air concentration). Up to now, various techniques (ventilation fans, platform screen doors (PSDs), magnetic filters, small jet fans, artificial intelligent ventilation systems, hybrid filters, etc) have been studied to reduce PM in underground subway systems. In this study, we reviewed the air quality of major subway stations with the focus on PM and relevant technologies for its reduction.

The development of new anticoagulants is an important goal for the improvement of thrombosis treatment. Recent studies have suggested the importance of thrombin inhibitors in the modulation of thromboembolic disorders. The aim of this study was to discover a new small-molecule thrombin inhibitor. In this study, the compound JJ1, which has a novel scaffold, was selected by structure-based docking simulation to determine its potential inhibitory activity against thrombin. JJ1 was shown to inhibit the catalytic activity of human α-thrombin with a K i of 0.019 µM by direct binding to the active site and with at least 10,000-fold selectivity relative to that reported for the inhibition of other biologically important serine proteases. JJ1 prolonged clotting times (activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time) and inhibited the activity and production of thrombin. Furthermore, it inhibited thrombin-catalyzed fibrin polymerization and platelet aggregation. Similar to its in vitro antithrombotic activities, JJ1 showed enhanced antithrombotic effects in an in vivo pulmonary embolism and arterial thrombosis model. It also exhibited anticoagulant effects in mice. Collectively, these results demonstrated that JJ1 was a potent, direct, and selective thrombin inhibitor that may be useful in the management of various thrombotic disorders.

Low molecular weight fucoidan (LMF) has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Thus, we examined the effects of LMF extracted from Undaria pinnatifida on dermal wounds. Five round dermal wounds were created on the dorsal back of rats, and they were then treated topically with distilled water (DW), Madecasol Care™ (MC) or LMF at 200, 100 and 50 mg/mL, twice a day for a week. There were dose-dependent increases in wound contraction in the groups receiving LMF but not in the MC group, compared with the DW. Histopathological examination revealed that LMF treatment accelerated wound healing, which was supported by increases in granular tissue formation on day four post-treatment but a decrease on day seven, accompanied by an evident reduction in inflammatory cells. In the LMF-treated wounds, collagen distribution and angiogenesis were increased in the granular tissue on days four and seven post-treatment. Immunoreactive cells for transforming growth factor-ß1, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 or matrix metalloproteinases 9 were also increased, probably due to tissue remodeling. Furthermore, LMF treatment reduced lipid peroxidation and increased antioxidant activities. These suggested that LMF promotes dermal wound healing via complex and coordinated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and growth factor-dependent activities.
