Background: Previous studies have revealed the risk factors for femoral pseudoaneurysms (FPA). Most data on FPA are based on coronary and peripheral interventions, with limited studies focusing on atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. However, patient backgrounds, anticoagulation regimens, and vascular access methods differ. In addition, a standard for managing FPA after AF ablation remains elusive due to the difficult nature of achieving thrombosis in pseudoaneurysms. Methods: This single-center, retrospective, observational study included 2805 consecutive patients who underwent AF ablation between January 2016 and December 2021. All patients underwent femoral artery and vein punctures. Puncture sites were checked 1 day post-procedure. Results: A total of 23 FPA patients were identified during the study period. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension (odds ratio 4.66, 95% confidence interval: 1.38-15.71; p = .0032) and warfarin use (odds ratio 3.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.40-10.45; p = .021) were significantly associated with the occurrence of FPA. The compression success rate was low (22%). There were nine and six patients in the endovascular treatment (EVT) and ultrasound-guided thrombin injection (UGTI) groups, respectively. The success rates were 100% and 84% in the EVT and UGTI groups, respectively. The length of hospital stay after FPA treatment was 2.1 days in the EVT group and 1.3 days in the thrombin group. Conclusion: We must be careful about post-procedural FPA, especially for hypertension and warfarin-using patients. Treatment of pseudoaneurysms with anticoagulants is unlikely to achieve hemostasis, and an early switch to invasive treatments, such as EVT, should be considered.

The electrochemical properties of the interface between the spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-δ (LNMO4-δ) cathodes and ethylene carbonate-dimethyl carbonate (EC-DMC) electrolyte containing 1 M of LiPF6 have been investigated to achieve high-voltage durability of LNMO4-δ/graphite full cells. Coating the LNMO4-δ crystal surface by a fluoroalkylsilane self-assembled monolayer with a thickness below 2 nm resulted in a capacity retention of 94% after 100 cycles at a rate of 1 C and suppression of capacity fading for both the cathode and anode of the full cell. The observed effect is likely caused by the inhibited oxidative decomposition of EC-DMC electrolyte and vinylene carbonate (VC) species at the LNMO4-δ crystal surface and formation of a stable VC solid electrolyte interface near the anode. Moreover, the results obtained via photoelectron spectroscopy and density-functional calculations revealed that the increase in the work function of the LNMO4-δ crystal surface due to the formation of Si-O-Mn species primary contributed to the inhibition of the oxidative decomposition of the electrolyte and VC molecules at the cathode/electrolyte interface.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of pimobendan with conventional therapies on survival and reocurrence of pulmonary edema in dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) caused by myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Records of 197 client-owned dogs from 14 veterinary hospitals were included in this study. Dogs were administered conventional treatments with or without pimobendan. Sixty-four dogs received a standard dose of pimobendan (0.20-0.48 mg/kg every 12 hr (q12hr)), 49 dogs received a low dose of pimobendan (0.05-0.19 mg/kg q12hr), and 84 dogs received conventional therapy alone. Dogs in the standard-dose and low-dose pimobendan groups had significantly longer median survival times than dogs in the conventional group (334, 277 and 136 days, respectively; P<0.001). The reoccurrence rate of pulmonary edema in the standard-dose group was significantly lower than in the low-dose and conventional groups (43%, 59% and 62%, respectively; P<0.05). Combination of pimobendan with a conventional treatment regimen significantly prolonged survival time after an initial episode of pulmonary edema in dogs with CHF caused by MMVD. There was no difference in survival between dogs administered standard and low doses of pimobendan, but pimobendan did prevent the reoccurrence of pulmonary edema in a dose-dependent manner.

We demonstrate herein that an ultra-thin fluoroalkylsilane self-assembled monolayer coating can be used as a modifying agent at LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-δcathode/electrolyte interfaces in 5V-class lithium-ion batteries. Bare LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-δ cathode showed substantial capacity fading, with capacity dropping to 79% of the original capacity after 100 cycles at a rate of 1C, which was entirely due to dissolution of Mn(3+) from the spinel lattice via oxidative decomposition of the organic electrolyte. Capacity retention was improved to 97% on coating ultra-thin FAS17-SAM onto the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode surface. Such surface protection with highly ordered fluoroalkyl chains insulated the cathode from direct contact with the organic electrolyte and led to increased tolerance to HF.

UNLABELLED: Currently, there are no reports of inflammatory responses to CPB in dogs. We investigated the time course of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine levels during and after CPB. ANIMALS: The study group included 11 dogs that underwent mitral valve repair with CPB, and the control group included 7 healthy dogs that underwent ovariohysterectomy. METHODS: Blood samples from the study group dogs were collected before, during and after surgery and analyzed for plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tissue necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), white blood cells (WBC), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Each inflammatory parameter was also compared with that of the control group dogs. RESULTS: After CPB, plasma levels of IL-6, WBC counts, and CRP levels were significantly higher than preoperative levels, and IL-6 levels in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: CPB induces a systemic inflammatory response in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the functionality of an autologous heart valve with stent (Stent-biovalve or SBV) after implantation in the pulmonic valve position in beagle dogs. ANIMALS: Five beagle dogs. METHODS: A mold with an aperture of a tri-leaflet structure was constructed from a pair of concave and convex rods to which a nitinol (NiTi) stent was mounted. This mold was embedded in a dorsal subcutaneous pouch in beagle dogs for 4 weeks. At the time of the removal, the surfaces of the molds were completely covered with connective tissues, tri-leaflet valves were formed and the NiTi stent was tightly connected to the structure. RESULTS: The mean burst strength of the SBV leaflet was 2710 mmHg (range 2280-3116 mmHg), which was approximately equal to that of the native pulmonic valve leaflet. After implantation in the pulmonary position, the SBV showed good functionality as a pulmonic valve. At 84 days after implantation, the SBV was replaced with autologous fibroblasts and collagenous tissues, and showed organization similar to that of native heart valves. CONCLUSION: Stent-Biovalves achieved good valvular function with laminar flow in the pulmonic valve position of beagle dogs.

In this work, we focused on the label-free detection of simple protein binding using near-infrared light-responsive plasmonic nanoshell arrays with a controlled interparticle distance. The nanoshell arrays were fabricated by a combination of colloidal self-assembly and subsequent isotropic helium plasma etching under atmospheric pressure. The diameter, interparticle distance, and shape of nanoshells can be tuned with nanometric accuracy by changing the experimental conditions. The Au, Ag, and Cu nanoshell arrays, having a 240-nm diameter (inner, 200-nm polystyrene (PS) core; outer, 20-nm metal shell) and an 80-nm gap distance, exhibited a well-defined localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak at the near-infrared region. PS@Au nanoshell arrays showed a 55-nm red shift of the maximum LSPR wavelength of 885 nm after being exposed to a solution of bovine serum albumin (BSA) proteins for 18 h. On the other hand, in the case of Cu nanoshell arrays before/after incubation to the BSA solution, we found a 30-nm peak shifting. We could evaluate the difference in LSPR sensing performance by changing the metal materials.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether mitral valve repair (MVR) under cardiopulmonary bypass would be an effective treatment for mitral regurgitation in small-breed dogs. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 48 small-breed dogs (body weight, 1.88 to 4.65 kg [4.11 to 10.25 lb]; age, 5 to 15 years) with mitral regurgitation that underwent surgery between August 2006 and August 2009. PROCEDURES: Cardiopulmonary bypass was performed with a cardiopulmonary bypass circuit. After induction of cardiac arrest, a mitral annuloplasty was performed, and the chordae tendineae were replaced with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene chordal prostheses. After closure of the left atrium and declamping to restart the heart, the thorax was closed. RESULTS: Preoperatively, cardiac murmur was grade 3 of 6 to 6 of 6, thoracic radiography showed cardiac enlargement (median vertebral heart size, 12.0 vertebrae; range, 9.5 to 14.5 vertebrae), and echocardiography showed severe mitral regurgitation and left atrial enlargement (median left atrium-to-aortic root ratio, 2.6; range, 1.7 to 4.0). 45 of 48 dogs survived to discharge. Three months after surgery, cardiac murmur grade was reduced to 0/6 to 3/6, and the heart shadow was reduced (median vertebral heart size, 11.1 vertebrae, range, 9.2 to 13.0 vertebrae) on thoracic radiographs. Echocardiography confirmed a marked reduction in mitral regurgitation and left atrium-to-aortic root ratio (median, 1.7; range, 1.0 to 3.0). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We successfully performed MVR under cardiopulmonary bypass in small-breed dogs, suggesting this may be an effective surgical treatment for dogs with mitral regurgitation. Mitral valve repair with cardiopulmonary bypass can be beneficial for the treatment of mitral regurgitation in small-breed dogs.

We have demonstrated the higher yield dimerization of single-crystalline Ag nanocubes through preciously controlled face-selective functionalization. With the achievement of the higher yield dimerization, we could thus observe some interesting optical properties of the dimer. Both experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the 50-nm-diameter Ag nanocubes dimers with a ca. 3.3 nm gap at their junction exhibited two plasmon peaks centered at 446 nm and 600 nm, which contributed to transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonances, respectively. Elctromagnetic calculations based on the FDTD method clearly showed that a greater enhancement of the local field occurred, with an average amplitude of the electric field of 22, at the fractal space between the aggregated Ag nanocubes when the dimer was illuminated under longitudinally polarized light.

We have demonstrated the fabrication of two-dimensionally periodic non-close packed arrays of spherical polystyrene nanoparticles with controllable their structural parameters including diameter and interpartcile distance. The principle of this procedure relies on stepwise integration of spin-coat-assisted colloidal self-assembly of the single layer of close-packed polystyrene nanoparticle on a substrate, and subsequent etching of the particle under atmospheric pressure helium plasma. The plasma process converted the close-packed nanoparticle array into non-close-packed arrangement remaining with unchanged their original spherical shape and periodicity. Owing to the etching process underwent isotropically, the structural parameters could be controlled with nanometric accuracy by the treatment time. The etching rate strongly depended on the working pressure conditions, and the etching rate under 250 Torr was ca. 3 times faster than that of the 760 Torr. The effects of the working pressure indicated the neutral helium radicals and photons diffused from the plasma might be primarily responsible for the etching.
