RESUMO

Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a layered redox-active, antiferromagnetic metal organic semiconductor crystals with the chemical formula [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] (where PPA is phenylphosphonate). The crystal structure of [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] shows that the metal phosphonate layers are separated by phenyl groups of the phenyl phosphonate linker. Tauc plotting of diffuse reflectance spectra indicates that [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] has an indirect band gap of 2.19 eV. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicate a complex landscape of energy states with PL peaks at 1.8 and 2.2 eV. [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] has estimated hybrid ionic and electronic conductivity values between 0.13 and 0.6 S m-1 . Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements show that [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] exhibits short range antiferromagnetic order between Cu(II) and V(IV) ions. [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] is also photoluminescent with photoluminescence quantum yield of 0.02%. [Cu(H2 O)2 V(µ-O)(PPA)2 ] shows high electrochemical, and thermal stability.

In recent times, atomically thin alloys of boron, nitrogen, and carbon have generated significant excitement as a composition-tunable two-dimensional (2D) material that demonstrates rich physics as well as application potentials. The possibility of tunably incorporating oxygen, a group VI element, into the honeycomb sp(2)-type 2D-BNC lattice is an intriguing idea from both fundamental and applied perspectives. We present the first report on an atomically thin quaternary alloy of boron, nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen (2D-BNCO). Our experiments suggest, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate, stable configurations of a honeycomb 2D-BNCO lattice. We observe micrometer-scale 2D-BNCO domains within a graphene-rich 2D-BNC matrix, and are able to control the area coverage and relative composition of these domains by varying the oxygen content in the growth setup. Macroscopic samples comprising 2D-BNCO domains in a graphene-rich 2D-BNC matrix show graphene-like gate-modulated electronic transport with mobility exceeding 500 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), and Arrhenius-like activated temperature dependence. Spin-polarized DFT calculations for nanoscale 2D-BNCO patches predict magnetic ground states originating from the B atoms closest to the O atoms and sizable (0.6 eV < E g < 0.8 eV) band gaps in their density of states. These results suggest that 2D-BNCO with novel electronic and magnetic properties have great potential for nanoelectronics and spintronic applications in an atomically thin platform.

RESUMO

Contemporary high-density electroencephalographic systems (hd-EEG) comprising up to 256 electrodes have inter-electrode separations of 2-4 cm. Because electric currents of the brain are believed to strongly diffuse before reaching the scalp surface, higher-density electrode coverage is often deemed unnecessary. We used an ultra-dense electroencephalography (ud-EEG) sensor array to reveal strong potential variation at 1cm scale and discovered that it reflects functional brain activity. A new classification paradigm demonstrates that ud-EEG provides twice the signal to noise ratio for brain-response classification compared with contemporary hd-EEG. These results suggest a paradigm shift from current thinking by showing that higher spatial resolution sampling of EEG is required and leads to increased functional brain information that is useful for diverse neurological applications.

We report on the fabrication and optical characterization of dense and ordered arrays of metal nanoparticles. The metal arrays are produced by reducing metal salts in block copolymer (BCP) templates made by solvent annealing of poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) or poly(styrene-b-ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymer thin films in mixed solvents. The gold and gold/silver composite nanoparticle arrays show characteristic surface plasmon resonances in the visible wavelength range. The patterning can be applied over large areas onto various substrates. We demonstrate that these metal nanoparticle arrays on metal thin films interact with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that propagate at the film/nanoparticle interface and, therefore, modify the dispersion relation of the SPPs.

A top-down/bottom-up approach is demonstrated by combining electron-beam (e-beam) lithography and a solvent annealing process. Micellar arrays of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) with a high degree of lateral order can be produced on a surface where sectoring is defined by e-beam patterning. The e-beam is used to crosslink the block copolymer (BCP) film immediately after spin-coating when the BCP is disordered or in a highly ordered solvent-annealed film. Any patterns can be written into the BCP by crosslinking. Upon exposure to a preferential solvent for the minor component block followed by drying, cylindrical nanopores are generated within the nonexposed areas by a surface reconstruction process, while, in the exposed areas, the films remain unchanged. Nickel nanodot arrays can be placed over selected areas on a surface by thermal evaporation and lift-off process.

We demonstrate a method to fabricate high-quality patterned micelle arrays using poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymer. Long-range order of the PS-b-P4VP micelle in hexagonal arrays was induced by topographic grating patterns during solvent annealing. The size and row spacing of block copolymer micelle arrays created in this way were uniform. By controlling the thickness of the polymer on the crests and in the troughs of the grating patterns, we prepared PS-b-P4VP micelle arrays having different sizes.
