RESUMO

H2S is a gaseous compound that contributes to air pollution. In this work, the electrochemical oxidation treatment of gaseous streams polluted with H2S is evaluated using a jet mixer and electrochemical cell device, in which the performance of electrolytic and electro-Fenton assisted absorption processes are compared. Results demonstrate the feasibility of both processes to remove H2S, reaching coulombic efficiencies of nearly 100% in the electrolytic assisted absorption, and 70-80% in the electro-Fenton assisted absorption. Aqueous solutions containing phosphate salts as electrolyte were found to be suitable as absorbents for the process. Efficiency in the cathodic production of H2O2 in these solutions using the experimental device was found to be as high as 32.8% (1.184 mgH2O2/min) at 12 °C and atmospheric pressure. Sequential formation of SO2 and SO3 is obtained by the oxidation of H2S contained in the gas. These species are hydrolysed, and a part remained in the absorbent as SO32- and SO42-, while the rest is dragged in the outlet gas. SO3 production is promoted by electrolytic assisted absorption and polysulphides by the electro-Fenton technology. Low concentrations of elemental sulphur are detected in the solid suspensions formed during the process.

Broadband optical frequency comb (OFC) generation based on a single electro-absorption modulator (EAM) is proposed. The EAM is driven by a radio frequency (RF) multi-frequency signal generated by a multiplication coupler composed of an electrical power splitter and an arithmetic circuit. Thus the number of comb-lines of the generated OFC can be increased. A complete theoretical model of OFC generation by an EAM driven by nth power of the RF source is established, and the performance of the OFC is analyzed by using OptiSystem software. The results show that, the number of comb-lines of the OFC is positively correlated with the number of multiplication of the RF source signal. The frequency spacing of the comb-lines is twice the frequency of the RF source signal and is tunable by adjusting the frequency of the RF source signal. Increasing chirp factor and modulation index of EAM could increase the number of comb-lines of the generated OFC. The amplitude of the RF source signal had little impact on the flatness of the OFC and the average OFC power. The scheme developed is not only simple and low-cost, but also can produce a large number of comb-lines.

This work focuses on the treatment of gaseous perchloroethylene (PCE) using electro-scrubbing with diamond electrodes and cobalt mediators. PCE was obtained by direct desorption from an aqueous solution containing 150 mg L-1, trying to a real pollution case. The electro-scrubber consisted of a packed absorption column connected with an undivided electrochemical cell. Diamond anodes supported on two different substrates (tantalum and silicon) were used and the results indicated that Ta/BDD was more successful in the production of Co (III) species and in the degradation of PCE. Three experimental systems were studied for comparison purposes: absorbent free of Co (III) precursors, absorbent containing Co (III) precursors, and absorbent containing Co (III) precursors undergoing previous electrolysis to the electro-scrubbing to facilitate the accumulation of oxidants. The most successful option was the last, confirming the important role of mediated electrochemical processes in the degradation of PCE. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) were found as the primary reaction products and ethyl chloroacetate esters were also identified. A comprehensive mechanism of the processes happening inside electro-scrubber is proposed.

This work focuses on the development of electro-absorption and photoelectro-absorption technologies to treat gases produced by a synthetic waste containing the highly volatile perchloroethylene (PCE). To do this, a packed absorption column coupled with a UV lamp and an undivided electrooxidation cell was used. Firstly, it was confirmed that the absorption in a packed column is a viable method to achieve retention of PCE into an absorbent-electrolyte liquid. It was observed that PCE does not only absorb but it was also transformed into phosgene and other by-products. Later, it was confirmed that the electro-absorption process influenced the PCE degradation, favoring the transformation of phosgene into final products. Opposite to what is expected, carbon dioxide is not the main product obtained, but carbon tetrachloride and trichloroacetic acid. Both species are also hazardous but their higher solubility in water opens possibilities for a successful and more environmental-friendly removal. The coupling with UV-irradiation has a negative impact on the degradation of phosgene. Finally, a reaction mechanism was proposed for the degradation of PCE based on the experimental observations. Results were not as expected during the planning of the experimental work but it is important to take in mind that PCE decomposition occurs in wet conditions, regardless of the applied technology, and this work is a first approach to try to solve the treatment problems associated to PCE gaseous waste flows in a realistic way.

In this study, we propose an eight-channel monolithic optical transmitter using silicon electro-absorption modulators (EAMs) based on free-carrier injection by Schottky junctions. The transmitter consists of a 1 × 8 silicon arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) and eight 500-µm-long EAMs on a 5.41 × 2.84 mm2 footprint. It generates eight-channel dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) outputs with 1.33 nm channel spacing (Δλ) in the C-band from a single broadband light source and modulates each channel with over 3 dB modulation depth at 6 V peak-to-peak. The experimental results showed that the feasibility of a homogeneous silicon DWDM transmitter with a single light source for switch fabrics in intra-data-center interconnects over heterogeneous integration with regards to more complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility.

We propose a graphene-based optical modulator and comprehensively investigate its photonic characteristics by electrically controlling the device with an ion-gel top-gate dielectric. The density of the electrically driven charge carriers in the ion-gel gate dielectric plays a key role in tuning the optical output power of the device. The charge density at the ion-gel-graphene interface is tuned electrically, and the chemical potential of graphene is then changed to control its light absorption strength. The optical behavior of the ion-gel gate dielectric exhibits a large hysteresis which originates from the inherent nature of the ionic gel and the graphene-ion-gel interface and a slow polarization response time of ions. The photonic device is applicable to both TE- and TM-polarized light waves, covering two entire optical communication bands, the O-band (1.26-1.36 µm) and the C-band (1.52-1.565 µm). The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretically simulated predictions. The temporal behavior of the ion-gel-graphene-integrated optical modulator reveals a long-term modulation state because of the relatively low mobility of the ions in the ion-gel solution and formation of the electric double layer in the graphene-ion-gel interface. Fast dynamic recovery is observed by applying an opposite voltage gate pulse. This study paves the way to the understanding of the operational principles and future applications of ion-gel-gated graphene optical devices in photonics.

RESUMO

Optical modulators (OMs) are a key device in modern optical systems. Due to its unique optical properties, graphene has been recently utilized in the fabrication of optical modulators, which promise high performance such as broadband response, high modulation speed, and high modulation depth. In this paper, the latest experimental and theoretical demonstrations of graphene optical modulators (GOMs) with different structures and functions are reviewed. Particularly, the principles of electro-optical and all-optical modulators are illustrated. Additionally, the limitation of GOMs and possible methods to improve performance and practicability are discussed. At last, graphene terahertz modulators (GTMs) are introduced.

RESUMO

Electro-absorption from GeSi heterostructures is receiving growing attention as a high performance optical modulator for short distance optical interconnects. Ge incorporation with Si allows strong modulation mechanism using the Franz-Keldysh effect and the quantum-confined Stark effect from bulk and quantum well structures at telecommunication wavelengths. In this review, we discuss the current state of knowledge and the on-going challenges concerning the development of high performance GeSi electro-absorption modulators. We also provide feasible future prospects concerning this research topic.
