INTRODUCTION: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint pathology that significantly constrains functional capacity. Assessing the impact of hip OA on functionality is crucial for research and clinical practices. The study aimed to assess hip OA patients' functionality using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and to evaluate its diagnostic ability to differentiate between different grades of hip OA. We hypothesized that the severity of hip OA would impact the time required to complete the TUG test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients (Ν = 606) with unilateral, primary hip OA were selected from de-identified data and divided according to the radiographic Kellgren-Lawrence classification system (groups: Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4). Groups' differences were assessed using the X2 test of independence and the one-way ANOVA model. Correlations between dependent and independent variables were assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to assess the TUG test's ability to differentiate between the hip OA grades. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were found among the three groups in age, gender distribution, TUG test, and occasional cane use (all p-values < 0.001). The correlation analysis shows a significant and strong positive correlation between TUG performance time and hip OA grades (r = .78, p < .001). The adjusted odds ratios (OR) were: Grade2-3=(2.29[95%CI: 1.89, 2.77], p < .001) and Grade3-4=(1.47[95%CI: 1.34, 1.62], p < .001). The TUG cut-off points from the ROC analysis were: Grades 2-3 = 10.25 s, Grades 2-4 = 11.35 s, and Grades 3-4 = 12.8 s. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that the duration of the TUG test significantly increased with the severity of the disease. TUG can offer real-time data on the management and progression of hip OA. Future studies should explore the correlation between hip OA and the TUG test, as understanding the relationship can influence treatment and patient outcomes.

The taste of blue honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea L.) berries is wrapped in bitterness, and awareness about the essence of bitterness is lacking. In the current study, 7-ketologanin, sweroside and loganin were isolated and identified as key bitter compounds using sensory-guided analysis. The bitterness thresholds of these compounds were determined to be 11.9 µg/mL, 33.5 µg/mL and 60.2 µg/mL. Subsequently, the differences in bitterness among 16 blue honeysuckle varieties were evaluated. The wild varieties A1 and A2 exhibited the highest bitter intensity. 7-Ketologanin, with the highest concentration of 34.70-37.11 mg/100 g and taste activity values of 29.16-31.18 in A1 and A2, was first identified as a bitter contributor in blue honeysuckle. There was no significant difference in bitter intensity between the reconstitution model and the original sample, confirming the contribution of the three bitter compounds. This study lays the foundation for the bitter improvement and variety selection of blue honeysuckle resources.

PURPOSE: To evaluate if single serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) level measurements are sufficient for pregnancy monitoring after single embryo transfer (sET) and to compare the hCG levels between fresh (FRET) and frozen embryo transfers (FET) in medically assisted reproduction. METHODS: This was a retrospective exploratory cohort study including all patients who met the inclusion criteria, who received a single FRET (n = 249) or FET (n = 410) of a day five blastocyst at the IVF clinic at the Johannes Kepler University Linz between 2011 and 2020. hCG levels were measured on day 14 after embryo transfer. Threshold values for the viability of pregnancies were determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: Significantly higher hCG levels were found in those who received FET than in those who received FRET (1222.8 ± 946.7 mU/ml vs. 862.7 ± 572.9 mU/ml; p < 0.001). Optimal threshold values predicting a viable pregnancy were 368.5 mU/ml and 523 mU/ml in the FRET and FET groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: After FET, higher hCG values after 14 days of embryo transfer must be considered in pregnancy monitoring. Additionally, a single threshold hCG value seems to be sufficient for determining pregnancy viability. To exclude ectopic pregnancies, subsequent ultrasound examination is a mandatory requirement.

The eagle owl (Bubo bubo) population in Norway is today classified as critically endangered on the red list of endangered species. Because previous studies have detected high concentrations of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in birds of prey, concerns have been raised whether POPs exposure are a significant factor to the substantial decline of the eagle owl population. The aims of this study were to measure the levels of POPs in eagle owls and to assess whether POPs may represent a potential health risk. POPs were analysed in liver samples from 100 eagle owls collected between 1994 and 2014. The concentrations of POPs were generally very high and individual birds had levels among the highest measured worldwide. The contaminant groups analysed were highly correlated (p < 0.0001). The concentrations of sum of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (∑PCB) exceeded the threshold value from moderate to severe health risk in 90% of the birds. The birds with cachectic or lean body condition had significantly higher levels of contaminants than those with higher body condition scores. No significant temporal or spatial trends were noted. The lack of temporal trends, suggest that the downward trend of POPs, appear to be levelling off. The lack of differences between inland and coastal regions suggest that the risk of exposure may be comparable between predatory birds feeding in marine or terrestrial food webs. The significantly higher POPs levels detected in individuals with poor body condition may be due to reduced fat stores and thereby higher concentration in the remaining fat and/or the weight loss could be induced by toxic effects. The high proportion of birds exceeding the threshold values for severe and high risk of adverse effects, suggest that the high contamination load may reduce the eagle owl's fitness and survival and, thus, contribute to decline of the eagle owl population.

Laboratory ecotoxicological tests are important tools for the management of environmental changes derived from anthropogenic activities. Folsomia candida is usually the model species used in some procedures. However, this species may not be sufficiently representative of the sensitivity of the other collembolan species. This study aimed to evaluate (i) the effects of soils naturally rich in potentially toxic elements (PTE) and soil characteristics on the reproduction and survival of different collembolan species, (ii) whether the habitat function of these soils is compromised, and (iii) to what extent F. candida is representative of the other collembolan species. For this, reproduction tests with six collembolan species were conducted in 14 different samples of soils. In general, collembolan reproduction was not completely inhibited in none of the natural tested soils. Even soils with high pollution load index values did not negatively affect collembolan reproduction for most of the species. In contrast, the lowest collembolan reproduction rates were found in a visually dense soil (lowest volume/weight ratio), highlighting that soil attributes other than total PTE concentration also interfere in the reproduction of collembolans. Our results support the idea that the F. candida species might not be representative of other collembolan species and that laboratory tests to assess soil contaminations should be conducted using diverse collembolan species.

Eutrophication by human activities is increasingly affecting ecosystem functioning and plant community composition. So far, studies mainly focus on the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition, surface water eutrophication or soil nutrient accumulation. Groundwater pollution of spring habitats, however, has received much less attention, although numerous papers report groundwater nutrient enrichment worldwide. This study presents a survey on groundwater pollution (with emphasis on nitrate and phosphate) and bryophyte composition in 51 ambient petrifying springs in 5 NW European countries, which were compared to published data from 173 other sites in 11 European countries. The reviewed dataset covers a broad range of unpolluted to heavily polluted springs with nitrate concentrations between 0.7 and 3227 µmol l-1. Most petrifying springs in the rural lowlands of NW Europe were found to have elevated concentrations of nitrate and phosphate with the most polluted springs occurring in The Netherlands. The cover of individual characteristic bryophyte species significantly correlates with groundwater nutrient concentrations indicating that nutrient pollution of spring waters affects bryophyte composition. Palustriella commutata, Eucladium verticillatum and Brachythecium rivulare prefer unpolluted petrifying springs whereas Cratoneuron filicinum and Pellia endiviifolia show a much broader tolerance to groundwater pollution. In order to sustain at least the basic conditions for the typical bryophyte composition of petrifying springs habitats, threshold values of 288 µmol (18 mg l-1) NO3- l-1 and 0.42 µmol (0.04 mg l-1) ortho-PO43- l-1 were defined. Data analysis of the spring water composition indicates that the main source for nutrient and nutrient induced base cation enrichment are nitrate losses from intensively used agricultural fields. The anthropogenically induced but regionally different chemical processes in subsoil and aquifers can result in different levels of nutrient pollution in springs. Further regulations for nitrate and phosphate application are required to conserve and restore groundwater fed ecosystems in Europe.

Importance: The global COVID-19 pandemic does not appear to end in the near future. Currently, limited data are available on the risk factors for delayed viral clearance in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infection. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association of clinical characteristics and vaccination with prolonged viral clearance. Methods: This retrospective cohort included 16,985 patients who had contracted the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant between April 5 and May 30, 2022, in Shanghai, China, and had mild or no symptoms. The patients were admitted to the quarantine venue at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. Results: Of the 16,985 participants, the occurrence of viral clearance was ≤8 and > 8 days in 11,009 (64.8 %) and 5976 (35.2 %) participants, respectively. Risk factors related to patients who remained persistently polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive were sex (Male, odds ratio [OR] 1.221, p < 0.001), older age (35-49, OR 1.389, p < 0.001; 50-64, OR 1.659, p < 0.001; ≥65, OR 2.139, p < 0.001), presence of symptoms (OR 1.093, p = 0.030), number of vaccinations (two doses, OR 0.753, p < 0.001; three doses, OR 0.797, p < 0.001; four doses, OR 0.543, p < 0.001), and cycle threshold (Ct) value for ORF1ab gene at diagnosis (25-35, OR 0.235, p < 0.001; >35, OR 0.079, p < 0.001). The lower rates of increase in Ct values were observed in the later viral shedding group than in the early viral shedding group for ORF1ab (ß = -0.791, p < 0.001) and N genes (ß = -0.825, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection and higher viral concentrations were associated with factors such as male sex, older age, symptomatic status, and fewer doses of vaccination in patients admitted to Shanghai Makeshift Hospital between April 5 and May 30, 2022.

BACKGROUND: Double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) remains the gold standard for diagnosing food allergy, despite sparse comparisons to open food challenges (OpenFCs). The objective of this retrospective study was to compare severity of symptoms and threshold values (cumulative dose of food allergen eliciting a clinical reaction) in children and adults with peanut allergy, challenged in an open and/or double-blind, placebo-controlled protocol. METHODS: This study included patients from the Allergy Centre, Odense University Hospital with a positive oral food challenge, defined as strict objective signs, with peanut during the period 2001-2022. Severity of symptoms was graded using the Sampson's severity score. Distribution models of threshold values were calculated using log-normal interval-censored survival analysis, and the number of placebo reactions was evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 318 positive OpenFCs and 86 DBPCFCs were included. There was no difference in severity of symptoms nor threshold values comparing the two challenge types, neither when stratified for age groups. However, a higher proportion of children experienced Grade 3 symptoms in the double-blind group. Only one patient had a positive reaction to a placebo challenge. CONCLUSION: Our findings do not advocate for DBPCFC being superior to OpenFC, if the latter is performed with strict objective stop criteria by trained staff.

Objectives As the prevalence and incidence of hip osteoarthritis (hip OA) continue to rise, measuring the impact of hip OA severity on a patient's functionality is essential. Stair walking is a particularly relevant task to assess hip OA patients, as difficulty with stair ascent is one of the driving factors in deciding to undergo a total hip arthroplasty. Although stairs tests often arise in post-arthroplasty measures, there is a lack of reported stairs performance time in hip OA patients. Therefore, this retrospective study aimed to report the stair performance time of hip OA patients categorized by disease severity and determine cut-off points that differentiate between severity grades. Materials and methods The patient selection was based on the review of de-identified data from our research laboratory database. 254 hip OA patients (aged ≥ 50 years) were divided according to the Kellgren-Lawrence classification system into three groups: Grade 2 (n=68), Grade 3 (n=109), and Grade 4 (n= 68). The stair-walking ability was evaluated using the 9S-A/D test. The time taken to ascend and descend the stairs was measured separately, and the total time (9S-A/D) was also recorded. The one-way ANOVA model, Welch test, Games-Howell posthoc test, Chi-Square tests, and Two-Way ANOVA model were used for the statistical analysis of the data. The cut-off points were obtained by receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis. The statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results Homogeneity was found between the three groups regarding demographic and clinical characteristics, except age and gender (p<0.001). The comparison of the variables (9S-ascent, 9S-descent, and 9S-A/D) between groups, adjusted for gender and age, showed significant differences: Grade 2 individuals had shorter performance times compared to those in Grade 3 and Grade 4 (p<0.005). Simultaneously, patients with Grade 3 hip OA have a shorter performance time than those with Grade 4 hip OA (p<0.005). Regarding ROC analysis of Grade 2 versus Grade 3: The AUCs of 9S-ascend, 9S-descent, and 9S-A/D were 0.742 (95%CI 0.67-0.81), 0.734 (95%CI 0.66-0.81), and 0.745 (95%CI 0.54-0.90), respectively (all p values <0.005). The cut-off points of 9S-ascend, 9S-descent, and 9S-A/D were 8.7 s (sensitivity 56%, specificity 88%), 7.1 s (sensitivity 58%, specificity 80%), and 16.25 s (sensitivity 54%, specificity 90%), respectively. Concerning ROC analysis of Grade 3 versus Grade 4: The AUCs of 9S-ascend, 9S-descent, and 9S-A/D were 0.702 (95%CI 0.62-0.78), 0.711 (95%CI 0.63-0.79), and 0.715 (95%CI 0.64-0.80), respectively (all p values <0.005). The cut-off points of 9S-ascend, 9S-descent, and 9S-A/D were 11.5 s (sensitivity 66%, specificity 65%), 8.3 s (sensitivity 71%, specificity 62%), and 19.05 s (sensitivity 71%, specificity 61%), respectively. Conclusions The study provides evidence that the progression of hip OA affected stair walking; the performance time of 9S-ascent, 9S-ascent, and 9S-A/D tests was significantly longer as the severity of hip OA worsened. ROC analysis results show tests' ability to distinguish the cut-off point between different hip OA grades. However, further research is required for the reporting and classification of stair performance time values in hip OA patients and to further investigate the ability of 9S-ascent, 9S-descent, and 9S-A/D tests to predict the grade of hip OA.

Bitterness is a common flavor attribute of aged cheese associated with the peptide fraction, but excessive levels are a defect leading to consumer rejection. Bitterness in cheese has been primarily associated with peptides that arise from the breakdown of casein. The last review of bitter peptides was published in 1992. This updated review compiled information about the bitter peptides published up to 2022. Our comprehensive search of the literature compiled 226 peptides associated with bitterness and cheese protein origins into a database (Supplemental Materials). The influences of a peptide's physical properties, such as molecular weight, average hydrophobicity, peptide length, number of prolines and the presence of hydrophobic amino acids in the peptide's terminus, were assessed for correlation with bitterness threshold values this assessment found that, among variables considered, higher molecular weight had the strongest correlation with higher bitterness among known peptides. Heatmaps of bitter peptides and their bitterness threshold values highlight ß-casein as the primary source of known bitter peptides in cheese. This comprehensive database of cheese protein-derived bitter peptides and this discovery of the correlation of a peptide's physical properties to bitterness will aid future researchers in the identification and discovery of contributors to cheese bitterness.

Although the trait concept is increasingly used in research, quantitative relations that can support in determining ecological tipping points and serve as a basis for environmental standards are lacking. This study determines changes in trait abundance along a gradient of flow velocity, turbidity and elevation, and develops trait-response curves, which facilitate the identification of ecological tipping points. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and abiotic conditions were determined at 88 different locations in the streams of the Guayas basin. After trait information collection, a set of trait diversity metrics were calculated. Negative binomial regression and linear regression were applied to relate the abundance of each trait and trait diversity metrics, respectively, to flow velocity, turbidity and elevation. Tipping points for each environmental variable in relation to traits were identified using the segmented regression method. The abundance of most traits increased with increasing velocity, while they decreased with increasing turbidity. The negative binomial regression models revealed that from a flow velocity higher than 0.5 m/s, a substantial increase in abundance occurs for several traits, and this is even more substantially noticed at values higher than 1 m/s. Furthermore, significant tipping points were also identified for elevation, wherein an abrupt decline in trait richness was observed below 22 m a.s.l., implying the need to focus water management in these altitudinal regions. Turbidity is potentially caused by erosion; thus, measures that can reduce or limit erosion within the basin should be implemented. Our findings suggest that measures mitigating the issues related to turbidity and flow velocity may lead to better aquatic ecosystem functioning. This quantitative information related to flow velocity might serve as a good basis to determine ecological flow requirements and illustrates the major impacts that hydropower dams can have in fast-running river systems. These quantitative relations between invertebrate traits and environmental conditions, as well as related tipping points, provide a basis to determine critical targets for aquatic ecosystem management, achieve improved ecosystem functioning and warrant trait diversity.

OBJECTIVES: Asymptomatic infections and mild diseases were more common during the Omicron outbreak in Shanghai, China in 2022. This study aimed to assess the characteristics and viral RNA decay between patients with asymptomatic and mild infections. METHODS: A total of 55,111 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 who were quarantined in the National Exhibition & Convention Center (Shanghai) Fangcang shelter hospital within 3 days after diagnosis from April 9 to May 23, 2022 were enrolled. The kinetics of cycle threshold (Ct) values of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were assessed. The influencing factors for disease progression and the risk factors for the viral RNA shedding time (VST) were investigated. RESULTS: On admission, 79.6% (43,852/55,111) of the cases were diagnosed with asymptomatic infections, and 20.4% were mild diseases. However, 78.0% of initially asymptomatic subjects developed mild diseases at the follow-up. The final proportion of asymptomatic infections was 17.5%. The median time of symptom onset, the duration of symptoms, and the VST were 2 days, 5 days, and 7 days, respectively. Female, age 19-40 years, underlying comorbidities with hypertension and diabetes, and vaccination were associated with higher risks of progressing to mildly symptomatic infections. In addition, mildly symptomatic infections were found to be associated with prolonged VST compared with asymptomatic infections. However, the kinetics of viral RNA decay and dynamics of Ct values were similar among asymptomatic subjects, patients with asymptomatic-to-mild infection, and patients with mild infection. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of initially diagnosed asymptomatic Omicron infections is in the presymptomatic stage. The Omicron infection has a much shorter incubation period and VST than previous variants. The infectivity of asymptomatic infections and mildly symptomatic infections with Omicron is similar.

The current Brazilian copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) prevention values (PV) for soil quality do not take into account the ecotoxicological impacts on soil organisms, which suggests these guiding values may not be protective of soil ecological trophic levels. This study assessed the acute (mortality) and chronic toxicity (reproduction), as well as the cumulative (bioaccumulation) potential of Cu and Zn (pseudo-total and available fractions) for earthworms Eisenia andrei in a Tropical Artificial Soil (TAS) and two tropical field soils (Oxisol and Alfisol). Toxicity data based on pseudo-total fractions were compared to PV. The Lowest Observed Effect Concentrations (LOEC) for the mortality endpoint were found at Cu and Zn concentrations higher than their PV (60 and 300 mg kg-1, respectively), regardless of the soil type. However, concentrations lower than PV reduced the reproduction of E. andrei by 20% (compared to the controls) for Cu in all tested soils (EC20s from 31.7 to 51.2 mg kg-1) and by 50% for Zn in Oxisol and Alfisol (EC50s = 225 and 283 mg kg-1, respectively). In TAS, only the EC20 (273 mg kg-1) for Zn was lower than PV. Increases of Cu in earthworm tissues occurred at concentrations higher than PV in all tested soils (LOEC values from 70 to 107 mg kg-1). The same was observed for Zn in TAS (LOEC = 497 mg kg-1), while in the field soils, the increases of Zn in earthworm tissues were lower than PV (LOEC = 131 and 259 mg kg-1 in Alfisol and Oxisol, respectively). We suggest the following: (1) The current Brazilian PV for Cu and Zn are not protective for earthworms (E. andrei) in the field soils tested; (2) PV derived from ecotoxicological assays in artificial soil cannot be representative for Brazilian field soils; (3) Using PV based on the pseudo-total fraction, without a soil-type normalizing factor, may limit the representativeness of this threshold for different soil types.

The bitter taste is generally considered an undesirable sensory attribute. However, bitter-tasting compounds can significantly affect the overall flavor of many foods and beverages and endow them with various beneficial effects on human health. To better understand the relationship between chemical structure and bitterness, this paper has summarized the bitter compounds in foodstuffs and classified them based on the basic skeletons. Only those bitter compounds that are confirmed by human sensory evaluation have been included in this paper. To develop food products that satisfy consumer preferences, correctly ranking the key bitter compounds in foodstuffs according to their contributions to the overall bitterness intensity is the precondition. Generally, three methods were applied to screen out the key bitter compounds in foods and beverages and evaluate their sensory contributions, including dose-over-threshold factors, taste dilution analysis, and spectrum descriptive analysis method. This paper has discussed in detail the mechanisms and applications of these three methods. Typical procedures for separating and identifying the main bitter compounds in foodstuffs have also been summarized. Additionally, the activation of human bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) and the mechanisms of bitter taste transduction are outlined. Ultimately, a conclusion has been drawn to highlight the current problems and propose potential directions for further research.

The rapid antigen test (RAT) has been adopted as a screening tool for SARS-CoV-2 infection in many emergency departments (EDs). We aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of the accuracy of the SARS-CoV-2 RAT as a screening tool in the ED. This retrospective observational study included patients who underwent both RAT and RT−PCR and visited the ED from 1 December 2021 to 15 March 2022. RAT and RT−PCR were performed by appropriately trained physicians. We performed detailed analyses using the E gene cyclic threshold (Ct) values of RT−PCR. Out of a total of 1875 patients, 348 (18.6%) had positive and 1527 (81.4%) had negative RT−PCR results. The overall sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the RAT were 67.8%, 99.9%, 99.6%, and 93.2%, respectively. The E gene Ct value was significantly lower in the RAT-positive patients than in the RAT-negative patients (18.5 vs. 25.3, p < 0.001). When the E gene Ct cutoff was 30.0, 25.0, 20.0, and 15.0, the sensitivity of the RAT was 71.9%, 80.3%, 93.0%, and 97.8%, respectively. The sensitivity of the RAT could be considered high in patients with a high viral load, and the RAT could be used as a screening tool in the ED.

We used daily real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results from 67 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a household transmission study, conducted April 2020-May 2021, to examine the trajectory of cycle threshold (Ct) values, an inverse correlate of viral RNA concentration. Ct values varied across RT-PCR platforms and by participant age. Specimens collected from children and adolescents had higher Ct values and adults aged ≥50 years showed lower Ct values than adults aged 18-49 years. Ct values were lower on days when participants reported experiencing symptoms, with the lowest Ct value occurring 2-6 days after symptom onset.

BACKGROUND: Presented work studies the association of COVID-19 severity, patient demographics, and clinical history with cycle threshold (Ct) values of SARS CoV2-rRT-PCR. We studied the Ct values for Orf1ab, N, and RdRp genes in association with all the factors mentioned above. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the individuals (n = 6331) that consulted two private diagnostic centers for COVID-19 testing. SARS-CoV-2 was detected by RT-PCR assays using different commercial kits. Clinical and demographic information was collected by the attending health care professional. Ct values were not associated with the age, sex, or clinical history of the patient. Orf1ab and N genes Ct values were only weakly associated with symptoms at the time of the SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR test. Also, the distributions of Ct values in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients are very similar irrespective of symptomatology. CONCLUSION: We conclude that the Ct values may have limitations in reliably predicting COVID-19 severity and should be used or reported with caution.

Drowning is considered amongst the top 10 causes of unintentional death, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Therefore, anti-drowning systems that can save lives by preventing and detecting drowning are much needed. This paper proposes a robust and waterproof sensor-based device to detect distress in swimmers at varying depths and different types of water environments. The proposed device comprises four main components, including heart rate, blood oxygen level, movement, and depth sensors. Although these sensors were designed to work together to boost the system's capability as an anti-drowning device, each could operate independently. The sensors were able to determine the heart rate to an accuracy of 1 beat per minute (BPM), 1% SpO2, the acceleration with adjustable sensitivities of ±2 g, ±4 g, ±8 g, and ±16 g, and the depth up to 12.8 m. The data obtained from the sensors were sent to a microcontroller that compared the input data to adjustable threshold values to detect dangerous situations. Being in hazardous situations for more than a specific time activated the alarming system. Based on the comparison made in the program and measuring the time of submersion, a message indicating drowning or safe was sent to a lifeguard to continuously monitor the swimmer' condition via Wi-Fi to an IP address reachable by a mobile phone or laptop. It is also possible to continuously monitor the sensor outputs on the device's display or the connected mobile phone or laptop. The threshold values could be adjusted based on biometric parameters such as swimming conditions (swimming pool, beach, depth, etc.) and swimmers health and conditions. The functionality of the proposed device was thoroughly tested over a wide range of parameters and under different conditions, both in air and underwater. It was demonstrated that the device could detect a range of potentially hazardous aquatic situations. This work will pave the way for developing an effective drowning sensing system that could save tens of thousands of lives across the globe every year.

The Três Marias Reservoir is the ninth largest reservoir in Brazil, becoming crucial for national strategic development. However, many anthropic activities may affect the sediment quality, promoting the need for a proper environmental assessment. This research appraised the seasonal influences on the Três Marias Reservoir's sediment geochemistry, elucidating possible anthropogenic impacts. The concentrations of Mg, Al, Ca, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Cd, Ti, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ba, and Pb were measured in 78 samples of bottom sediments regarding the two seasons of the area, a dry winter and rainy summer. The median ± 2 median absolute deviation (MAD) settled the geochemical background and environmental thresholds for the two seasons. The sediment quality guidelines CONAMA 344/12 highlight the possible adverse ecological effects of pollutants. The hierarchical clustering analysis, the geoaccumulation index, and the pollution load index delineated the polluted zones. The pollution load index ranges from 0.25 to 2.28 in the dry season and 0.56 to 2.11 in the rainy season, defining three affected zones in the reservoir. Forestry and agriculture are the probable pollution sources, reaching warning levels that should be considered in further environmental strategies.
