IFNL4 polymorphism as a predictor of chronic hepatitis C treatment efficiency in Ukrainian patients.

The aim of this study was to examine association between IFNL4 gene ss469415590 and treatment efficiency in group of Ukrainian PEG-interferon/ribavirin-treated chronic hepatitis C patients. Study group consisted of 92 unrelated hepatitis C virus genotype 1 mono-infected patients: case group-29 patients with late or absent virological response; control group-63 patients with sustained virological response. Study material was genomic DNA. Genotyping was performed using amplification-refractory mutation system PCR. Statistical analysis was performed using GenePop and OpenEpi statistical packages. Obtained results show that ss469415590 ΔG/ΔG genotype is associated with poor virological response (OR = 3.62; CI 95%: 1.12-11.67) in PEG-interferon/ribavirin-treated chronic hepatitis C patients from Ukraine.

[Effects of cortiphen on human tumor strains transplanted into athymic mice and rats]. / Deistvie kortifena na shtammy opukholei cheloveka, transplantiruemye bestimusnym mysham and krysam.

The antitumour activity of cortiphen synthesized at the All-Union Cancer Research Centre of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences was studied on human tumour strains transplanted into nude mice and rats. Cortiphen was found to possess an expressed activity to kidney cancer, cancer of corpus uteri, chorionepithelioma, fibrosarcoma. Two strains of colon adenocarcinoma out of three have displayed an expressed sensitivity to cortiphen, while melanoma and Jewing sarcoma strains proved to be weakly sensitive to the preparation.

The impact of surgical treatment of Ehrlich's carcinoma on animals' survival was studied. Tumour removal on posttransplantation day 30 was shown to cause no increases in the longevity of the animals operated on as compared with those non-operated on (mean longevity was 59.9 and 62.2 days, respectively). The death causes of the animals operated on were metastases and relapses. On day 7 after transplantation, cyclophosphanum therapy of Ehrlich's carcinoma failed to prolong the animals' life. While 24 hours after tumour transplantation the longevity increased from 61.8 to 93.4 days. No therapeutical effects were shown to be associated with the influence of humoral factors of the host body on tumor growth. It was shown that the lack of these humoral factors resulted in interrupting tumor growth.

[Immunological properties of the preparations of the anti-anthrax antigen]. / Immunologicheskie svoístva preparatov sibireiazvennogo protektivnogo antigena.

The results of examination of immunological properties of the preparations of anthrax protective antigen on laboratory animals (guinea pigs) confirmed the efficacy of using the lactic-peptone medium for obtaining the anthrax protective antigen. Incubation for 18 hours at 37 degrees C of the strain-producer (STI-1) and a double immunization scheme with the antigen obtained proved to be the most rational conditions for inducing the immunological response in the vaccinated laboratory animals. Three fractions of the anthrax protective antigen obtained possessed weaker immunobiological properties than the whole preparation of this antigen.

[The effect of immunomodulators on the development of antibodies to the diphtheria antigen in mice vaccinated with the DTP adsorbed vaccine]. / Vliianie immunomoduliatorov na vyrabotku antitel k difteriinomu antigenu u myshei, vaktsinirovannykh AKDS-vaktsinoi.

An animal model for the study of the influence of immunomodulators on the development and preservation of postvaccinal antidiphtheria immunity was experimentally selected and the corresponding study was carried out. In this work the following immunomodulators were used: dibasol, prodigiosan, splenin, thymalin, reaferon, tactivin, methyluracyl. The study revealed that by day 120 of observation all immunomodulators stimulated the production of antibodies in higher titers than adsorbed DPT vaccine, introduced without immunomodulators. The most effective action was exhibited by splenin and prodigiosan (injected subcutaneously), dibasol and methyluracyl (administered orally). Two latter immunomodulators, if introduced prior to immunization, are the most promising preparations to be used in practical immunoprophylaxis.

[Conservative methods of treating breast cancer metastases to the lungs]. / K voprosu o konservativnykh metodakh lecheniia metastazov raka molochnoi zhelezy v legkie.

An analysis is presented of different routine methods of treatment (radiotherapy, mono- and polychemotherapy; chemo-radiation treatment) used in 77 patients with breast cancer metastases in the lung. According to the data obtained positive results were gained in 53% of cases, a considerable effect being noted in 46% of patients.

[Modification of doxorubicin action with artificial hyperglycemia]. / Modifikatsiia deistviia doksorubitsina iskusstvennoi giperglikemiei.

Approximately a 1.6-fold increase in the antitumor action of doxorubicin used in combination with artificial hyperglycemia was shown on mice C57B1/6 with hemocytoblastosis La. Artificial hyperglycemia was found to change the doxorubicin pharmacokinetics in the experimental animals evident from increased in antibiotic half-life to 42.3 min against 26.5 min in the controls, the apparent initial concentration of doxorubicin being increased 1.6 times. Accumulation of doxorubicin in the bone marrow cells of the mice did not change with artificial hyperglycemia. It was suggested that the increase in the therapeutic effect of doxorubicin used in combination with artificial hyperglycemia was associated with changes in drug pharmacokinetics.

[Comparative study of platinum complexes in athymic mice with human tumors]. / Sravnitel'noe izuchenie kompleksov platiny na bestimusnykh myshakh s opukholiami cheloveka.

Tumoricidal activity of Soviet-synthesized oxoplatinum and cycloplatam was shown to influence human tumor strains (melanoma, cancer of the kidney, Burkitt's lymphoma) transplanted to nude mice. Their therapeutic effect was associated with lymphopenia; however, they did not suppress the chemically determined activity of succinate dehydrogenase and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase.

[Effects of plant polysaccharide paliustran on the growth of human tumor transplants in athymic mice]. / Vliianie rastitel'nogo polisakharida paliustrana na rost transplantatov opukholei cheloveka u bestimusnykh myshei.

Plant polysaccharide palyustran inhibited the growth of human lung carcinoma P-1 transplanted to athymic mice by 60% but failed to do so in human rhabdomyosarcoma. Treatment with palyustran was followed by a 2-fold decrease in lympho- and granulocyte levels, selective inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activity in tumor cells and--in single cases--metastatic involvement of the liver.

[Comparison of the efficacy of imidazole-carboxamide and of a combination of nitrosomethylurea, vincristine and dactinomycin in disseminated melanoma]. / Sravnenie éffiktivnosti imidazol-karboksamida i kombinatsii nitrozometilmocheviny, vinkristina, daktinomitsina pri disseminirovannoi melanome.

A randomized cooperative study comparing 2 regimens of chemotherapy (DTIC--150mg/m2 iv days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and a combination of vincristine--1.4 mg/m2 iv days 1, 8, 15, nitrosomethylurea--200 mg/m2 iv days 3, 5, 10, 12 and dactinomycin--0.3 mg/m2 iv days 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12) was carried out in 114 patients with disseminated skin melanoma. A combined chemotherapy course given to 58 patients was followed by complete response (CR) in 8 cases (13.7%) and partial response by over 50% (PR)--in 6 cases (10.4%). In 56 patients treated with DTIC, CR was registered in 4 patients (7.1%) and PR in 9 (16%). Patients resistant to one regimen did not respond to the other.

From 1991 forth, a diphtheria epidemics has been spreading in Ukraine, the cause of which is decline in the level of collective immunity. The highest incidence rates are registered in large industrial centers. In rural areas, morbidity rates were found to be half as high as those in urban ones, particularly so among the adults. Morbidity and mortality were greater among those children of under school age who did not attend the child's pre-school institutions. Immunization of the adults done on a single-procedure basis does not protect them either against the disease or lethal outcome. The observed decline in mortality is due to the detection of mild forms of the disease, earlier diagnose and, therefore, start of the treatment. But even in 1994 the epidemic situation with respect to diphtheria looks serious in Ukraine, which fact necessitates inaugurating antiepidemic measures on a continuous basis, the mainstay of which is vaccinal prevention.
