In this study, the temperature and pressure of supercritical CO2 extraction were evaluated to obtain oleoresin of Brunfelsia uniflora leaves and flowers. The oleoresin compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by three different methods. The highest oleoresin yields were 3.32% at 40°C and 200 bar for the leaves, and 1.03% at 60°C and 200 bar for the flowers. The main extracted compounds from leaves were phytol varying from 11.95 to 36.42% and α-tocopherol from 15.53 to 43.10%, and from flowers were geranyl linalool from 11.05 to 21.42% and α-amyrin from 9.66 to 22.12%. Oleoresin obtained at 60°C and 150 bar from leaves presented high antioxidant activity by DPPH (IC50 1.90 mg/mL) and by FRAP (1.8 µmol Fe2+/mg). ß-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation oleoresin from leaves at 0.25 mg/mL presented higher antioxidant activity than Trolox. The total phenolic content of the oleoresin from leaves ranged from 66.20 to 83.33 µg/mg and from flowers it was just up to 12.46 µg/mg. The extraction conditions affected yield, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity of oleoresin from leaves and flowers. This is the first report on the antioxidant activity of B. uniflora oleoresin from leaves and flowers and provides subsidies for potential applications in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

BACKGROUND: HIV-associated cognitive impairment occurs even in the early stages of infection. Short-term memory, psychomotor speed, attention, and executive functioning are the main capacities affected. Controversy exists regarding whether highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is helpful in combating this process. The objective of the present study is to determine the association between cognitive impairment and HAART in HIV-infected patients from Hospital Regional de Huacho. METHODS: Prospective study of HIV patients meeting criteria to start HAART. Twenty-one HIV-positive patients were recruited between April and July 2011. Researchers administered a standardised neuropsychological test battery before and 4 weeks after onset of HAART. Psychomotor speed, executive function, short term memory (visual and verbal), attention, and visuospatial performance were evaluated. RESULTS: Nineteen patients completed the study (14 males and 5 females). In the pre-HAART evaluation, most patients scored below average on the executive function and psychomotor speed subtests. Psychomotor speed and immediate visual memory improved significantly after four months of treatment with HAART. CONCLUSIONS: Some degree of cognitive decline may present even in the early and asymptomatic stages of HIV infection. The benefits of antiretroviral treatment for cognitive performance can be detected after only a few weeks of follow-up.

Thrombospondin 2 (TSP2) is a protein with important roles in different tumor types, mainly related to tumor inhibition. However, there are limiting data regarding TSP2 in prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We aimed to investigate TSP2 transcript and protein expression in tumoral and non-tumoral prostate tissues and cell lines, and its implications for PCa diagnosis and progression. TSP2 transcript expression was evaluated by real time PCR in PCa and BPH tissue samples and in tumoral and non-tumoral cell lines. TSP2 protein expression analysis was conducted by immunohistochemistry in a tissue microarray (TMA) containing PCa and BPH tissue samples. TSP2 transcript was down-regulated in PCa tissue samples and cell lines, when compared to BPH and non-tumoral samples (P<0.01). Receiver Operating Curve (ROC) analysis demonstrated that TSP2 transcript levels can better distinguish PCa from BPH tissue samples (P<0.01) than serum PSA levels (P=0.299). TSP2 protein expression has been observed in the cytoplasm of both PCa and BPH epithelial and stromal compartments. TSP2 stromal staining scores were significantly lower in PCa than in BPH tissues (P<0.01), while similar TSP2 epithelial staining patterns were observed in both diseases. Notably, the TSP2 epithelial staining score was significantly correlated to vascular invasion and biochemical recurrence in PCa tissue samples (P<0.05). Our data indicate that TSP2 is down-regulated at PCa tissues and cell lines, especially at stroma compartment, which could be related to PCa progression. TSP2 levels could potentially be applied for differential PCa and BPH diagnosis.

The study of some of the behavioral aspects of the main vector of Leishmania infantum chagasi Cunha & Chagas in the Americas, Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), such as dispersion, population size, and vector survival rates, is important for the elucidation of the mechanisms of visceral leishmaniasis transmission. These parameters were studied by means of capture-mark-release-recapture experiments in an urban area of Campo Grande municipality, an endemic area of visceral leishmaniasis, situated in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Six capture-mark-release-recapture experiments were undertaken between November 2009 and November 2010 and once in January 2012 with a view to assessing the population size and survival rate of Lu. longipalpis. The insects were released in a peridomicile surrounded by 13 residences. The recaptures were undertaken with automatic light traps for four consecutive weeks after release in the surrounding area. In total, 3,354 sand flies were captured, marked, and released. The overall recapture rate during the capture-mark-release-recapture experiments was 4.23%, of which 92.45% were recaptured at the release site, indicating limited dispersal. The greatest distance recorded from the release site was 165 m for males and 241 m for females. The male daily survival rate, calculated on the basis of regressions from the numbers of marked recaptured insects during the 15 successive days after release was 0.897. The estimated male population size measured by the Lincoln Index was 10,947.127. Though Lu. longipalpis presented a limited dispersion the physical barriers typical of urban environments did not prevent the sand flies from flying long distances.

INTRODUCTION: eHealth offers a solution to current challenges in maternal health. Telemonitoring can rethink antenatal care, achieving more personalized medicine, especially in high-obstetric risk conditions. A home care model mediated by the development of a mobile and web application that seeks support in clinical decision-making was created in our institution. The software architecture consists of an information system (HCIS, Health Care Information System), a database, an authentication server, and an interoperability bus. METHODS: The usability of the software by patients was assessed using the Information Systems Usability Questionnaire (CSUQ) version 3, as well as the satisfaction of the care model designed through a survey in a prospective observational study in 62 patients with a high-risk pregnancy. Participants were monitored in real-time through blood glucose, blood pressure, and weight measurements, and attended telemedicine appointments with an obstetrician from admission to six weeks postpartum. RESULTS: The CSUQ results show a good acceptance of the use of the application by patients both in the global score and the different domains, Global, System utility (SYSUSE), Information Quality (INFOQUAL), and Interface quality (INTERQUAL). The satisfaction survey also shows good results in general and by domains. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study provide some suggestions for the implementation of a technological development and a care model from the patient's perspective.

Osteopontin splicing isoforms (OPN-SI) present differential expression patterns and specific tumor roles. Our aims were to characterize OPN-SI expression in prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) tissues, besides evaluating their potential as biomarkers for PCa diagnosis and prognostic implications. Prostatic tissue specimens were obtained from 40 PCa and 30 benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) patients. Quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to measure OPN-SI mRNA expression. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed using an anti-OPNc polyclonal antibody. Biostatistical analyses evaluated the association of OPN-SI and total Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) serum levels with clinical and pathological data. PCa tissue samples presented significantly higher levels of OPNa, OPNb and OPNc transcripts (p<0.01) than in BPH specimens. OPN-SI mRNA expression were positively correlated with Gleason Score (p<0.01). ROC curves and logistic regression analyses demonstrated that OPN-SI and PSA were able to distinguish PCa from BPH patients (p<0.01). The OPNc isoform was the most upregulated variant and the best marker to distinguish patients' groups, presenting sensitivity and specificity of 90% and 100%, respectively. Immunohistochemistry analysis also demonstrated OPNc upregulation in PCa samples as compared to BPH tissues. OPNcprotein was also strongly stained PCa tissues presenting High Gleason Score. Multivariate analysis indicated that OPNc expression levels above the cut-off value presented a chance 4-fold higher for PCa occurrence. We conclude that OPN-SI were overexpressed in PCa tissues, strongly associated with PCa occurrence and with tumor cell differentiation. Our results suggest OPNc splicing isoform as an important biomarker contributing to improve PCa diagnosis and prognosis, besides providing insights into early steps of PCa carcinogenesis.

In this study, we isolated and characterized a lytic Lactococcus lactis bacteriophage from the sera of a failed fermentation. The phage was isolated and cultured in L. lactis subsp. cremoris in M17 medium. The isolated bacteriophage was characterized by multiplex PCR, pulsed-field electrophoresis, DNA restriction digestion, analysis of the N-terminal sequence of the phage major structural protein, transmission electron microscopy and sequencing and analysis of a conserved fragment of its genome. Analysis of the viral genome indicates that its genome is composed of a DNA strand of approximately 48 kb in length, and PCR and microscopy confirmed that IL-P1 belongs to the group of 936-type phages in the family Siphoviridae, which is the most abundant type of lactococcal virus in dairy products worldwide. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a virus within this family that has a presumptive genome larger than 40 kb.

LED induced chlorophyll fluorescence analysis is employed to investigate the effect of water deficit and salt stress upon the growth process of Jatropha curcas L.. Red(Fr) and far-red(FFr) chlorophyll fluorescence around 685 nm and 735 nm, respectively, were observed and examined as a function of the stress intensity(salt concentration and water deficit). The fluorescence ratio Fr/FFr which is a valuable nondestructive and nonintrusive indicator of the chlorophyll content of leaves was exploited to monitor the jatropha plants under stress. The data indicated that salinity plays a minor role in the chlorophyll concentration of leaves for NaCl concentrations in the 25 to 200 mM range. The fluorescence ratio also permitted the detection of damage caused by water deficit in the early stages of the plants growing process. A significant variation of the Fr/FFr ratio was observed in the first 10 days of the experiment, and before signs of visual stress became apparent. The results suggest that the Fr/FFr ratio is an early-warning indicator of water deficit stress.

Xylella fastidiosa is a plant-pathogenic bacterium that lives inside host xylem vessels, where it forms biofilm which is believed to be responsible for disrupting the passage of water and nutrients. Pectobacterium carotovorum is a Gram-negative plant-specific bacterium that causes not only soft rot in various plant hosts, but also blackleg in potato by plant cell wall degradation. Chagas disease, which is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, has been commonly treated with nifurtimox and benzonidazole, two drugs that cause several side effects. As a result, the use of natural products for treating bacterial and neglected diseases has increased in recent years and plants have become a promising alternative to developing new medicines. Therefore, this study aimed to determine, for the first time, the chemical composition of essential oil from Psidium guajava flowers (PG-EO) and to evaluate its in vitro anti-Xylella fastidiosa, anti-Pectobacterium carotovorum, anti-Trypanosoma cruzi and cytotoxic activities. PG-EO was obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus while its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Major compounds identified in PG-EO were α-cadinol (37.8%), ß-caryophyllene (12.2%), nerolidol (9.1%), α-selinene (8.8%), ß-selinene (7.4%) and caryophyllene oxide (7.2%). Results showed that the PG-EO had strong trypanocidal activity against the trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi (IC50 = 14.6 µg/mL), promising antibacterial activity against X. fastidiosa (MIC = 12.5 µg/mL) and P. carotovorum (MIC = 62.5 µg/mL), and moderate cytotoxicity against LLCMK2 adherent epithelial cells in the concentration range (CC50 = 250.5 µg/mL). In short, the PG-EO can be considered a new source of bioactive compounds for the development of pesticides and trypanocide drugs.

Successful strategies to promote neovascularization of ischemic tissues are still scarce, being a central priority in regenerative medicine. Microparticles harboring primitive vascular beds are appealing cell delivery candidates for minimally-invasive therapeutic vascularization. However, dynamic cellular alterations associated with in vitro vascular morphogenesis are still elusive. Here, bioengineered microgels guided the assembly of entrapped outgrowth endothelial cells (OEC) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) into cohesive vascularized microtissues. During in vitro maturation, OEC formed capillary-like networks enveloped in newly-formed extracellular matrix. Gene expression profiling showed that OEC acquired a mesenchymal-like phenotype, suggesting the occurrence of partial endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), while MSC remained transcriptionally stable. The secretome of entrapped cells became more pro-angiogenic, with no significant alterations of the inflammatory profile. Importantly, matured microgels showed improved cell survival/retention after transplantation in mice, with preservation of capillary-like networks and de novo formation of human vascular structures. These findings support that in vitro priming and morphogenesis of vessel-forming cells improves their vasculogenic/angiogenic potential, which is of therapeutic relevance, shedding some light on the associated mechanisms.

This study evaluated the antibacterial and antiproliferative activities of the essential oil of Psidium guajava leaves (PG-EO), traditionally used in folk medicine. The essential oil was obtained from fresh leaves by hydrodistillation, using a modified Clevenger apparatus. The major PG-EO chemical constituents were identified by GC-MS and GC-FID as being ß-caryophyllene (16.1%), α-humulene (11.9%), aromadendrene oxide (14.7%), δ-selinene (13.6%), and selin-11-en-4α-ol (12.5%). The antibacterial activity of the essential oil of P. guajava leaves was determined in terms of its minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) using the broth microdilution method in 96-well microplates. PG-EO had moderate activity against Streptococcus mutans (MIC = 200 µg/mL), S. mitis (MIC = 200 µg/mL), S. sanguinis (MIC = 400 µg/mL), S. sobrinus (MIC = 100 µg/mL), and S. salivarius (MIC = 200 µg/mL). The antiproliferative activity was evaluated against different tumor cell lines: breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa), and human gliobastoma (M059J). A normal human cell line (GM07492A, lung fibroblasts) was included. The antiproliferative activity was evaluated using the XTT assay and the results were expressed as IC50. The essential oil showed significantly lower IC50 values against MCF-7 and M059J lines than that obtained for the normal line, showing selectivity. Our results suggest that the essential oil of Psidium guajava L. has promising biological activities and can be considered a new source of bioactive compounds.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coffee seed germination represents an interplay between the embryo and the surrounding endosperm. A sequence of events in both parts of the seed determines whether germination will be successful or not. Following previous studies, the aim here was to further characterize the morphology of endosperm degradation and embryo growth with respect to morphology and cell cycle, and the influence of abscisic acid on these processes. METHODS: Growth of cells in a fixed region of the axis was quantified from light micrographs. Cell cycle events were measured by flow cytometry and by immunocytochemistry, using antibodies against beta-tubulin. Aspects of the endosperm were visualized by light and scanning electron microscopy. KEY RESULTS: The embryonic axis cells grew initially by isodiametric expansion. This event coincided with reorientation and increase in abundance of microtubules and with accumulation of beta-tubulin. Radicle protrusion was characterized by a shift from isodiametric expansion to elongation of radicle cells and further accumulation of beta-tubulin. Early cell division events started prior to radicle protrusion. Abscisic acid decreased the abundance of microtubules and inhibited the growth of the embryo cells, the reorganization of the microtubules, DNA replication in the embryonic axis, the formation of a protuberance and the completion of germination. The endosperm cap cells had smaller and thinner cell walls than the rest of the endosperm. Cells in the endosperm cap displayed compression followed by loss of cell integrity and the appearance of a protuberance prior to radicle protrusion. CONCLUSIONS: Coffee seed germination is the result of isodiametric growth of the embryo followed by elongation, at the expense of integrity of endosperm cap cells. The cell cycle, including cell division, is initiated prior to radicle protrusion. ABA inhibits expansion of the embryo, and hence subsequent events, including germination.

BACKGROUND: Long-term renal transplant survivors display high incidences of hypogonadism, neoplasms, erectile dysfunction, and metabolic syndrome. Although the urologist has a major role in the kidney transplantation surgery and treatment of the graft-related surgical complications, the follow-up of these patients is essentially focused on kidney function and the immunosuppressive regimen. We sought to evaluate the role of a nephrourologic follow-up for kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: We evaluated 27 male patients of mean age of 48.1 +/- 7.5 years and mean renal allograft follow-up of 12.3 +/- 4.3 years. The nephrourologic approach consisted of evaluation of the urinary system, prostate cancer screening, and assessment of voiding function, fertility, erectile dysfunction, hypogonadism, and metabolic syndrome. We also assessed quality of life. RESULTS: Major urologic findings were found in 18 (66.7%) patients. Four patients reported posttransplantation parenthood. The mean serum creatinine was 1.5 +/- 0.6 mg/dL and the calculated clearance, 72.6 +/- 27.4 mL/min/1.73 m(2). Regarding the voiding pattern, 92.6% of patients showed mild to moderate bladder outlet obstruction. Clinically significant increases in prostate volume were observed in 3.7% of patients. Mean serum total prostate-specific antigen was 1.6 +/- 1.5 ng/mL. Erectile dysfunction was displayed by 46.2% and hypogonadism by 74.1% of patients. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 44.4% of patients, and quality of life was generally rated as good (4/5). CONCLUSION: Long-term renal transplantation survivors show high prevalences of treatable urologic diseases. Thus, we strongly recommend routine complete nephrourologic follow-up of this population.

This work describes the procedure followed by the Laboratório de Metrologia Nuclear (LMN) for the standardization of (55)Fe by the tracing method. This technique was applied using two radionuclides, which decay by the electron capture process followed by a prompt gamma-ray, namely (51)Cr and (54)Mn, as tracers. The calibration was performed in a 4pibeta-gamma coincidence system. The efficiency was obtained by selecting a gamma-ray window set at the 320keV total absorption peak for (51)Cr and at 834keV for (54)Mn.

Efficient cell delivery strategies are urgently needed to improve the outcome of cell-based pro-angiogenic therapies. This study describes the design of an injectable cell delivery platform, based on biomaterial-guided morphogenesis principles. Soft high-mannuronic acid alginate microgels, oxidized and functionalized with integrin-binding peptides, provided adequate biochemical/biomechanical cues for the co-assembly of mesenchymal stem cells and outgrowth endothelial cells (OEC) into pre-vascularized microtissues. In vitro priming conditions regulated OEC tubulogenesis, which only occurred under normoxia (+O2) in the presence of angiogenic factors (+GF) and, importantly, did not revert in an ischemic-like environment. Primed (+O2+GF) microgel-entrapped cells secreted a large variety of angiogenesis-related proteins and produced endogenous extracellular-matrix, rich in fibronectin and collagen type I, fostering cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions and establishing a stable angiogenic niche. Extending the pre-culture time resulted in higher cell outward migration and in vivo angiogenic potential. Microgels partially disintegrated upon implantation in chick embryos, promoting interaction between pre-vascularized microtissues and the host. Preserved human vascular structures were still detected in vivo, and human cells showed the ability to migrate and integrate with the chick vasculature. Our results suggest that an integrated approach combining pro-angiogenic cells, cell-instructive microgels and adequate in vitro priming may provide the basis for successful therapeutic angiogenesis.

Even though exhaustively studied, dormancy alleviation in diaspores of Urochloa humidicola (Rendle) Morrone & Zuloaga remains a mystery. To clarify this, we asked the following question: could dormancy alleviation in diaspores of this species be associated with ageing, GA/ABA balance and remaining structures of the panicoid spikelet? We answer this question using diaspores of U. humidicola cv. BRS Tupi as a biological model, a cultivar with a wide edaphoclimatic range in Neotropical areas and whose diaspores possess 'deep dormancy' when dispersed. We analysed both germination and early plant development using a split-plot model. Our findings demonstrate that dormancy alleviation in diaspores of U. humidicola is a synergic phenomenon driven by crosstalk between age, GA/ABA balance and remaining structures of the panicoid spikelet covering caryopses, since this interaction acts on the dynamics of germination and early plant development. We demonstrate that: (i) spreading germination time is a maternal survival mechanism of this species, which has repercussions for occupational aggressiveness of the species; (ii) remaining structures of the panicoid spikelet covering caryopses are the main modulator of embryo development. These structures control the after-ripening process, which is modulated by some molecular factor. We also highlight that it is necessary to review concepts about dormancy of dispersal units in this grass species.

Therapeutic angiogenesis with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) delivery may provide a new approach for the treatment of ischemic diseases, but current strategies to deliver VEGF rely on either bolus delivery or systemic administration, resulting in limited clinical utility, because of the short half-life of VEGF in vivo and its resultant low and transient levels at sites of ischemia. We hypothesize that an injectable hydrogel system can be utilized to provide temporal control and appropriate spatial biodistribution of VEGF in ischemic hindlimbs. A sustained local delivery of relatively low amounts of bioactive VEGF (3 mug) with this system led to physiologic levels of bioactive VEGF in ischemic murine (ApoE(-/-)) hindlimbs for 15 days after injection of the gel, as contrasted with complete VEGF deprivation after 72 h with bolus injection. The gel delivery system resulted in significantly greater angiogenesis in these limbs as compared to bolus (266 vs. 161 blood vessels mm(-2)). Laser Doppler perfusion imaging showed return of tissue perfusion to normal levels by day 28 with the gel system, whereas normal levels of perfusion were never achieved with saline delivery of VEGF or in control mice. The system described in this article could represent an attractive new generation of therapeutic delivery vehicle for treatment of cardiovascular diseases, as it combines long-term in vivo therapeutic benefit (localized bioactive VEGF for 1-2 weeks) with minimally invasive delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the validity of measuring the levels of Mycobacterium leprae-specific anti-phenolic glycolipid (PGL)-I antibody, neopterin, a product of activated macrophages, and C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute phase protein, in serial serum samples from patients for monitoring the leprosy spectrum and reactions during the course of multi-drug treatment (MDT). METHODS: Twenty-five untreated leprosy patients, 15 multi-bacillary (MB) and 10 paucibacillary (PB), participated. Eight patients developed reversal reaction and five developed erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) during follow-up. The bacterial index (BI) in slit-skin smears was determined at diagnosis and blood samples collected by venipuncture at diagnosis and after 2, 4, 6 and 12 months of MDT. PGL-I antibody and neopterin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, whereas the CRP levels were measured by the latex agglutination method. RESULTS: The levels of PGL-I antibodies and neopterin were higher in the sera of MB than PB patients, which correlated with the patients' BI. The serum levels of CRP did not differ significantly between the MB and PB patients. The serum levels of PGL-I and neopterin were no higher in reactional patients than non-reactional patients prone to such reactions. However, ENL patients had higher serum CRP levels than non-reactional MB patients. The serum PGL-I antibody levels declined significantly during MDT, in contrast to neopterin and CRP levels. CONCLUSION: Measuring the serum levels of PGL-I antibodies and neopterin appeared to be useful in distinguishing MB from PB patients, whereas monitoring the levels of PGL-I antibodies appeared to be useful in monitoring MB patients on MDT. Measuring serum CRP, although not useful in monitoring the patients, has limited significance in detecting ENL reactional patients.

Habitat fragmentation is considered to be one of the biggest threats to tropical ecosystem functioning. In this region, termites perform an important ecological role as decomposers and ecosystem engineers. In the present study, we tested whether termite community is negatively affected by edge effects on three fragments of Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Termite abundance and vegetation structure were sampled in 10 transects (15 × 2 m), while termite richness, activity, and soil litter biomass were measured in 16 quadrants (5 × 2 m) at forest edge and interior of each fragment. Habitat structure (i.e. number of tree, diameter at breast height and soil litter biomass) did not differ between forest edge and interior of fragments. Termite richness, abundance and activity were not affected by edge effect. However, differences were observed in the ß diversity between forest edge and interior as well as in the fragments sampled. The ß diversity partitioning indicates that species turnover is the determinant process of termite community composition under edge effect. Our results suggest that conservation strategies should be based on the selection of several distinct sites instead of few rich sites (e.g. nesting).

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: The absence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), cold-knife conization and hysterectomy for treatment of CIN is an occasional finding of uncertain clinical significance. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of a negative procedure and its relationship to disease recurrence. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 263 specimens from women submitted to the LEEP (n = 142), conization (n = 101) or hysterectomy (n = 20) due to CIN. RESULTS: The frequency of negative conization, LEEP and hysterectomy were, respectively, 15.5%, 19.8% and 25%. Recurrence occurred from 16 to 44 (median = 42) months in women with negative surgical specimens (LEEP or cold knife conization), and after five to 31 (median = 20) months after histological findings of CIN in surgical specimens, respectively, 7.1% and 11.2%. CONCLUSION: The absence of CIN in those procedures of biopsy-confirmed CIN is a not an uncommon finding. Patients with positive or negative specimens should be carefully followed.
