RESUMO

Recently, due to physical aging, diseases, accidents, and other factors, the population with lower limb disabilities has been increasing, and there is consequently a growing demand for wheelchair products. Modern product design tends to be more intelligent and multi-functional than in the past, with the popularization of intelligent concepts. This supports the design of a new, fully functional, intelligent wheelchair that can assist people with lower limb disabilities in their day-to-day life. Based on the UCD (user-centered design) concept, this study focused on the needs of people with lower limb disabilities. Accordingly, the demand for different functions of intelligent wheelchair products was studied through a questionnaire survey, interview survey, literature review, expert consultation, etc., and the function and appearance of the intelligent wheelchair were then defined. A brain-machine interface system was developed for controlling the motion of the intelligent wheelchair, catering to the needs of disabled individuals. Furthermore, ergonomics theory was used as a guide to determine the size of the intelligent wheelchair seat, and eventually, a new intelligent wheelchair with the features of climbing stairs, posture adjustment, seat elevation, easy interaction, etc., was developed. This paper provides a reference for the design upgrade of the subsequently developed intelligent wheelchair products.

Objective: In order to address the issues of inconvenience, high medical costs, and lack of universality associated with traditional knee rehabilitation equipment, a portable intelligent wheelchair for knee rehabilitation was designed in this study. Methods: Based on the analysis of the knee joint's structure and rehabilitation mechanisms, an electric pushrod-driven rehabilitation institution was developed. A multi-functional module was designed with a modular approach, and the control of the wheelchair body and each functional module was implemented using an STM32 single-chip microcomputer. A three-dimensional model was established using SolidWorks software. In conjunction with Adams and Ansys simulation software, kinematic and static analyses were conducted on the knee joint rehabilitation institution and its core components. A prototype was constructed to verify the equipment's actual performance. Results: According to the prototype testing, the actual range of motion for the knee joint swing rod is 15.1°~88.9°, the angular speed of the swing rod ranges from -7.9 to 8.1°/s, the angular acceleration of the swing rod varies from -4.2 to 1.6°/s², the thrust range of the electric pushrod is -82.6 to 153.1 N, and the maximum displacement of the load pedal is approximately 1.7 mm, with the leg support exhibiting a maximum deformation of about 1.5 mm. Conclusion: The intelligent knee joint rehabilitation wheelchair meets the designed functions and its actual performance aligns with the design criteria, thus validating the rationality and feasibility of the structural design.

Our research presents a cost-effective navigation system for electric wheelchairs that utilizes the tongue as a human-machine interface (HMI) for disabled individuals. The user controls the movement of the wheelchair by wearing a small neodymium magnet on their tongue, which is held in place by a suction pad. The system uses low-cost electronics and sensors, including two electronic compasses, to detect the position of the magnet in the mouth. One compass estimates the magnet's position while the other is used as a reference to compensate for static magnetic fields. A microcontroller processes the data using a computational algorithm that takes the mathematical formulations of the magnetic fields as input in real time. The system has been tested using real data to control an electric wheelchair, and it has been shown that a trained user can effectively use tongue movements as an interface for the wheelchair or a computer.

Automatic wheelchairs have evolved in terms of instrumentation and control, solving the mobility problems of people with physical disabilities. With this work it is intended to establish the background of the instrumentation and control methods of automatic wheelchairs and prototypes, as well as a classification in each category. To this end a search of specialised databases was carried out for articles published between 2012 and 2019. Out of these, 97 documents were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The following categories were proposed for these articles: (a) wheelchair instrumentation and control methods, among which there are systems that implement micro-electromechanical sensors (MEMS), surface electromyography (sEMG), electrooculography (EOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and voice recognition systems; (b) wheelchair instrumentation, among which are found obstacle detection systems, artificial vision (image and video), as well as navigation systems (GPS and GSM). The results found in this review tend towards the use of EEG signals, head movements, voice commands, and algorithms to avoid obstacles. The most used techniques involve the use of a classic control and thresholding to move the wheelchair. In addition, the discussion was mainly based on the characteristics of the user and the types of control. To conclude, the articles exhibited the existing limitations and possible solutions in their designs, as well as informing the physically disabled community about the technological developments in this field.

Under the umbrella of assistive technologies research, a lot of different platforms have appeared since the 1980s, trying to improve the independence of people with severe mobility problems. Those works followed the same path coming from the field of robotics trying to reach users' needs. Nevertheless, those approaches rarely arrived on the market, due to their specificity and price. This paper presents a new prototype of an intelligent wheelchair (IW) that tries to fill the gap between research labs and market. In order to achieve such a goal, the proposed solution balances the criteria of performance and cost by using low-cost hardware and open software standards in mobile robots combined together within a modular architecture, which can be easily adapted to different profiles of a wide range of potential users. The basic building block consists of a mechanical chassis with two electric motors and a low-level electronic control system; driven by a joystick, this platform behaves similar to a standard electrical wheelchair. However, the underlying structure of the system includes several independent but connected nodes that form a distributed and scalable architecture that allows its adaptability, by adding new modules, to tackle autonomous navigation. The communication among the system nodes is based on the controller area network (CAN) specification, an extended standard in industrial fields that have a wide range of low-cost devices and tools. The system was tested and evaluated in indoor environments and by final users in order to ensure its usability, robustness, and reliability; it also demonstrated its functionality when navigating through buildings, corridors, and offices. The portability of the solution proposed is also shown by presenting the results on two different platforms: one for kids and another one for adults, based on different commercial mechanical platforms.

Rehabilitation engineering is playing a more vital role in the field of healthcare for humanity. It is providing many assistive devices to diplegia patients (The patients whose conditions are weak in terms of muscle mobility on both sides of the body and their paralyzing effects are high either in the arms or in the legs). Therefore, in order to rehabilitate such types of patients, an intelligent healthcare system is proposed in this research. The electric sticks and chairs are also a type of this system which was used previously to facilitate the diplegia patients. It is worth noting that a voice recognition system along with wireless control feature has been integrated intelligently in the proposed healthcare system in order to replace the common and conventional assistive tools for diplegia patients. These features will make the proposed system more user friendly, convenient and comfortable. The voice recognition system has been used for movements of system in any desired direction along with the ultrasonic sensor and light detecting technology. These sensors detect the obstacles and low light environment intelligently during the movement of the wheelchair and then take the necessary actions accordingly.

Traditional wheelchairs are unable to actively sense the external environment during use and have a single control method. Therefore, this paper develops an intelligent IoT wheelchair with the three functions, as follows. (1) Occupant-wheelchair-environment multimode sensing: the PAJ7620 sensor is used to recognize gesture information, while GPS (Global Positioning System) and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors are used to sense positioning, speed and postural information. In addition, Lidar, DHT11, and BH1750 sensors obtain environmental information such as road information, temperature and humidity and light intensity. (2) Fusion control scheme: a mobile control scheme based on rocker and gesture recognition, as well as a backrest and footrest lifting, lowering and movement control scheme based on Tencent Cloud and mobile APP (Application). (3) Human-machine interaction: the wheelchair is docked to Tencent IoT Explorer through ESP8266 WiFi module, using MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) protocol is used to upload sensory data, while the wheelchair status can be viewed and controlled on the APP. The wheelchair designed in this paper can sense and report the status of the occupant, environment and wheelchair in real time, while the user can view the sensory data on the mobile APP and control the wheelchair using the rocker, gestures and APP.

The transport of patients from the inpatient service to the operating room is a recurrent task in a hospital routine. This task is repetitive, non-ergonomic, time consuming, and requires the labor of patient transporters. In this paper is presented a system, named Connected Driverless Wheelchair, that can receive transportation requests directly from the hospital information management system, pick up patients at their beds, navigate autonomously through different floors, avoid obstacles, communicate with elevators, and drop patients off at the designated operating room. As a result, a prototype capable of transporting patients autonomously in hospital environments was obtained. Although it was impossible to test the final developed system at the hospital as planned, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the extensive tests conducted at the robotics laboratory facilities, and our previous experience in integrating mobile robots in hospitals, allowed to conclude that it is perfectly prepared for this integration to be carried out. The achieved results are relevant since this is a system that may be applied to support these types of tasks in the future, making the transport of patients more efficient (both from a cost and time perspective), without unpredictable delays and, in some cases, safer.

This article describes a novel add-on for powered wheelchairs that is composed of a gaze-driven control system and a navigation support system. The add-on was tested by three users. All of the users were individuals with severe disabilities and no possibility of moving independently. The system is an add-on to a standard power wheelchair and can be customized for different levels of support according to the cognitive level, motor control, perceptual skills, and specific needs of the user. The primary aim of this study was to test the functionality and safety of the system in the user's home environment. The secondary aim was to evaluate whether access to a gaze-driven powered wheelchair with navigation support is perceived as meaningful in terms of independence and participation. The results show that the system has the potential to provide safe, independent indoor mobility and that the users perceive doing so as fun, meaningful, and a way to reduce dependency on others. Independent mobility has numerous benefits in addition to psychological and emotional well-being. By observing users' actions, caregivers and healthcare professionals can assess the individual's capabilities, which was not previously possible. Rehabilitation can be better adapted to the individual's specific needs, and driving a wheelchair independently can be a valuable, motivating training tool.

Collision avoidance technology has the capacity to facilitate safer mobility among older power mobility users with physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments, thus enabling independence for more users. Little is known about consumers' perceptions of collision avoidance. This article draws on interviews (29 users, 5 caregivers, and 10 prescribers) to examine views on design and utilization of this technology. Data analysis identified three themes: "useful situations or contexts," "technology design issues and real-life application," and "appropriateness of collision avoidance technology for a variety of users." Findings support ongoing development of collision avoidance for older adult users. The majority of participants supported the technology and felt that it might benefit current users and users with visual impairments, but might be unsuitable for people with significant cognitive impairments. Some participants voiced concerns regarding the risk for injury with power mobility use and some identified situations where collision avoidance might be beneficial (driving backward, avoiding dynamic obstacles, negotiating outdoor barriers, and learning power mobility use). Design issues include the need for context awareness, reliability, and user interface specifications. User desire to maintain driving autonomy supports development of collaboratively controlled systems. This research lays the groundwork for future development by illustrating consumer requirements for this technology.
