BACKGROUND: Graduate students exhibit vulnerability to problematic Internet use, which can result in adverse physical, psychological, and social consequences. However, limited studies have addressed this issue among graduate students, and even fewer have explored the unique factors contributing to their problematic Internet use. Therefore, to address this gap, the current study aims to probe the relationship between supervisor's neuroticism and problematic Internet use among graduate students, the mediating effect of the supervisor-student relationship quality, as well as the moderating effect of fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 at three universities in Beijing, China. Anonymous data from 448 graduate students were collected regarding problematic Internet use, supervisor's neuroticism, supervisor-student relationship quality, and the fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation. A moderated mediation analysis was performed using Hayes' PROCESS macro (Model 14). RESULTS: Supervisor's neuroticism was positively linked to graduate students' problematic Internet use, supervisor-student relationship quality mediated the linkage, and fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation played a moderating role in the second stage. Specifically, for students lower in fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation, supervisor-student relationship quality negatively predicted students' problematic Internet use. While for the graduate students higher in fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation, supervisor-student relationship quality could not significantly predict students' problematic Internet use. The mediating effect was only significant for graduate students lower in fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: This study established a theoretical model linking supervisor's neuroticism to graduate students' problematic Internet use, highlighting the potential roles of supervisor-student relationship quality and fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation. Reducing the neuroticism level of the supervisor, enhancing the quality of the supervisor-student relationship, and mitigating students' fear of the supervisor's negative evaluation will contribute to the reduction of problematic Internet use among graduate students.

PURPOSE: Transumbilical laparoscopic-assisted appendectomy (TULAA) is one of the first endoscopic surgeries performed by trainee pediatric surgeons. While the operative time is generally shorter than for conventional laparoscopic appendectomy, the indications for this procedure are unclear and many unknown factors can prolong the operative time. We conducted this study to identify the factors that may prolong the operative time for TULAA. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study was conducted between 2015 and 2023. We performed multivariate analysis to identify the factors associated with prolonged operative time by analyzing TULAA procedures performed by trainees. RESULTS: The study included 243 patients. The median operative time was 84 min (interquartile range, 69-114 min). Multivariate analysis revealed that an increased body mass index, elevated C-reactive protein level, a history of conservative treatment for acute appendicitis, and appendix perforation, for the patient; < 6 years' experience since graduation for the operating surgeon; and lack of board certification as a supervisor from the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons for the attending surgeon were independent risk factors for prolonging the operative time. CONCLUSION: Having an attending surgeon with board certification as a supervisor by the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons contributes to reducing the operative time required for TULAA.

PURPOSE: In daily practice, junior doctors can contribute to quality improvement by providing innovative suggestions for change, referred to as voice behavior. Junior doctors are more likely to engage in voice behavior when they receive sufficient support from supervisors and peers. Such support has also been associated with less burnout and more work engagement. However, whether less burned-out and more work-engaged junior doctors demonstrate more voice behaviors in the face of sufficient supervisor and peer support is unclear. Therefore, we studied whether and how associations of supervisor and peer support with junior doctors' voice behaviors are mediated by burnout and work engagement. MATERIALS & METHODS: Participants were 301 junior doctors that completed a web-based survey including validated questionnaires on supervisor and peer support, burnout, work engagement, and voice behavior. RESULTS: Supervisor and peer support were associated with lower levels of burnout and higher levels of work engagement. Work engagement, but not burnout, mediated the associations of supervisor and peer support with voice behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Junior doctors who received more supervisor or peer support were more work-engaged and reported more voice behaviors. Thus, supervisor and peer support should be cultivated to facilitate junior doctors' roles as work-engaged professionals in quality improvement.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing demand for professional practice placement opportunities, supported by health professional educators, to enable future health workforce development. Early career health professionals performing the educator role is one strategy that can help meet this demand. However, there is a need to consider how best to prepare and support early career health professionals to become educators. This study aimed to explore the experiences and perspectives of early career occupational therapy clinical educators including their preparation and support needs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were completed with ten early career occupational therapists who had supervised their first or second student on a professional practice placement. The participants worked within an Australian tertiary hospital and health service in various clinical settings. Interviews were completed within six weeks of placement completion and lasted approximately one hour. They were recorded and transcribed verbatim and reflexive inductive thematic analysis was undertaken to identify key themes. RESULTS: Ten occupational therapists, who had been working for an average of two years and two months, consented to participate. Initially, participants expressed mixed emotions about taking on the clinical educator role. They then described their adjustment to the role responsibilities, challenges encountered, and the development of the educator-student relationship. Participants found that the experience of supervising a student enhanced their educator, clinical, and professional skills and confidence. The important support elements of tailored educator preparation, placement design, and timely access to relevant resources and experienced staff were identified. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated how early career health professionals can possess desirable educator attributes, such as enthusiasm for taking on the role and cultivating collaborative learning relationships with their students. The experience of being an educator also presents a professional development opportunity for early career health professionals. Insights gained about the specific preparation and support needs of early career clinical educators warrant consideration by organisations and staff involved in the provision of student professional practice placements. Overall, this study's findings signify the importance of engaging and investing in early career health professionals to support student clinical education and to develop our current and future healthcare workforce.

BACKGROUND: Recently, all medical universities in Sweden jointly developed a framework for Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for work-based training and assessment. This framework is now being introduced nationally in the new 6-year undergraduate medical programme that directly lead to a licence to practise. When EPAs are introduced, it is of central importance to gain clinical supervisors' acceptance to apply the framework in their supervision of students. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate how clinical supervisors, not familiar with EPAs, experience clinical supervision using the framework for EPAs. METHODS: We used a purposive sampling to recruit clinical supervisors. They were given written information on EPAs with a selection of suitable EPAs and the Swedish observation rating scale for assessment of autonomy, and they were offered to attend a 30-minute introductory web course. The participants were informed that EPAs were to be tested, and the students were asked to participate. After the study period the clinical supervisors participated in semi-structured interviews. Inductive qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the transcribed interviews. RESULTS: Three general themes emerged in the qualitative analysis: Promoting Feedback, Trusting Assessments and Engaging Stakeholders. The participants described benefits from using EPAs, but pointed out a need for preparation and adaptation to facilitate implementation. The structure was perceived to provide structured support for feedback, student involvement, entrustment decisions, enabling supervisors to allow the students to do more things independently, although some expressed caution to rely on others' assessments. Another concern was whether assessments of EPAs would be perceived as a form of examination, steeling focus from formative feedback. To understand the concept of EPA, the short web-based course and written information was regarded as sufficient. However, concern was expressed whether EPA could be applied by all clinical supervisors. Involvement and adaption of the workplace was pointed out as important since more frequent observation and feedback, with documentation requirements, increase the time required for supervision. CONCLUSIONS: EPAs were accepted as beneficial, promoting structured feedback and assessments of the students' autonomy. Preparation of supervisors and students as well as involvement and adaptation of the workplace was pointed out as important.

OBJECTIVES: This study describes daily oral health care in private enhanced service housing units and nursing homes in Finland using a qualitative method. METHODS: Nineteen supervisor nurses were interviewed in the six largest cities in Finland. The interviews consisted of semi-structured questions. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed using inductive content analysis. RESULTS: The qualitative content analysis revealed five main categories: diet, education in the oral health of older people, oral care equipment and taking care of them, caring for the mouths of residents, and professional oral health care. The results revealed that sugary snacks were given daily in the units and there was a need for oral health care education. The dental equipment of residents was taken care of well and the oral health of the residents was taken care of moderately well. Furthermore, there was a need for co-operation between dental professionals and only half of the residents had an individual oral care plan. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that based on this qualitative study, the implementation of daily oral health care in most nursing homes and enhanced housing units seems to be at a sufficient level and more oral health-related practical and theoretical education is needed.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the influence of career shocks on nurses' occupational well-being through job crafting and the moderating role of supervisor autonomy support. METHOD: The present study used a cross-sectional design. And the study included 714 frontline nurses in China, and we used structural equation modelling (SEM) to test our hypotheses. RESULTS: Job crafting mediated both the relationship between positive career shocks and occupational well-being and the relationship between negative career shocks and occupational well-being. Supervisor autonomy support moderated the indirect relationships. CONCLUSIONS: Positive and negative career shocks could increase and impair nurses' occupational well-being through job crafting, respectively. We contribute to helping nurses make sense of career shocks and preparing for career shocks, and hospital administrators and nurses' direct supervisors can help nurse better cope with career shocks in attending job crafting activities and providing more autonomy supports.

Work sample tests gather information about behavior that is consistent with the behavior being predicted. This criterion-related validity study examines whether a work sample test can predict behaviors more than 6 months later among managers (N = 127) in a large municipal organization. Ratings from both the subordinates (SOR) and supervisors (SVR) of the managers were used as criteria for the leadership dimensions of Influencing others, Consideration, and Planning. In total, six hypotheses were tested. The results were corrected for range restriction in the predictors and for unreliability in the criteria. The hypothesis that the work sample test score of Consideration predicted subordinates' ratings of Consideration received full support ( ρ ¯ = 0.33; CI [0.06-0.56]). The Consideration work sample test score also showed a positive relationship with supervisor ratings of Consideration ( ρ ¯ = 0.22; CI [-0.01 to 0.43]), although the confidence interval includes zero. No significant criterion-related validity was found for Influencing others or Planning. Given the results, the work sample test can primarily be used to predict Consideration. The results are discussed, and suggestions for further research are provided.

Job burnout is a major predicament globally, especially among the helping professions. Based on the job demands-resources (JDR) theory and on attachment theory, this study explored the relations between a history of childhood maltreatment (CM), insecure attachment styles (avoidant and anxious), perceived supervisor support and job burnout. A sample of 320 helping professionals participated in the study, of which 35% reported experiencing CM. Findings confirmed the hypothesis that a history of CM was positively related to both avoidant and anxious attachment styles. Anxious attachment style partly mediated the relationship between CM and burnout. In addition, the relationship between CM and burnout was mediated by avoidant attachment style and perceived supervisor support, so that highly avoidant professionals perceived their supervisors as less supportive, reporting higher levels of burnout. Notably, there were no discernible variations in burnout levels when comparing professionals who had experienced maltreatment with those who had not. The study highlights the value of adopting an attachment perspective to better understand job burnout among the helping professions.

BACKGROUND: Mistreatment by patients is a detrimental phenomenon predominant in healthcare organizations. However, there is a lack of nursing literature regarding the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions that exist between mistreatment by patients and its detrimental consequences. AIM: By integrating the Job Demands-Resources Model and the Conservation of Resources Theory, the study aimed to unveil the mediating role of psychological detachment from work in the relationship between mistreatment by patients and nurses' caring behaviors, as well as the moderating effect of supervisor positive gossip. METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study involved 341 nurses from five hospitals across two cities in Egypt. Data were collected using an introductory information form, the Mistreatment by Patients Scale, the Psychological Detachment Scale, the Caring Behaviors Scale, and the Supervisor Positive Gossip Scale. The study's hypotheses were tested using the PROCESS macro. RESULTS: The results showed that mistreatment by patients was negatively related to nurses' caring behaviors via an increased psychological detachment. Further, higher levels of supervisor positive gossip were shown to weaken the direct effect of mistreatment by patients in increasing nurses' psychological detachment, as well as the indirect negative effect of mistreatment by patients on nurses' caring behaviors via psychological detachment. CONCLUSIONS: Mistreatment by patients contributes to nurses' psychological detachment and decreased caring behaviors; however, these negative outcomes can be mitigated by supervisor positive gossip. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING POLICYMAKING: Nursing managers should adopt strategies to deter the rise of mistreatment by patients, and utilize positive gossip to support nurses exposed to such mistreatment to alleviate its consequences.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to describe the skills considered to have been acquired by students during their professional practice placements, with particular emphasis on skills related to the new roles of pharmacists. METHODS: Skills are monitored during the professional practice placement using the dashboard included in the guide designed by the college of community pharmacy placement supervisors. Each skill is assessed at three points during the placement. The assessment is carried out jointly by the student and his or her placement supervisor using the dashboard, which is available online in the form of a form on the Moodle platform. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the professional practice placement dashboards for the 2018-2019 to 2022-2023 academic years. RESULTS: The response levels for the three phases of the dashboard are very high, always exceeding 90% of students completing their placement. All of the scorecards show a progression in the acquisition of skills throughout the placement and enable certain skills to be distinguished in terms of their level of acquisition at the end of the placement. The focus on pharmaceutical interviews shows that the rate of acquisition of this skill is over 85% in 2021 and 2023, the years in which the subject of the public health project was the performance and quality assurance of pharmaceutical interviews in pharmacies, whereas it is no higher than 38% in the other years. CONCLUSIONS: Our work shows the contribution of the professional practice placement dashboard in monitoring student progress. The analysis carried out reveals different levels of mastery at the start of the placement and different levels of progress depending on the skills. It also reveals the contribution made by the intervention on the content of the placement, particularly in terms of the acquisition of certain skills, especially those related to new tasks such as conducting pharmaceutical interviews.

Two major forms of organizational trust are supervisor trust and management trust. Guided by the job demand-resources model, this exploratory study examined how the job demand variables of role conflict, role ambiguity, role overload, and fear of being victimized at work and the job resource variables of instrumental communication, job autonomy, job variety, and quality training were linked to both forms of organizational trust among staff at a private U.S. prison. Results showed that workplace variables predicted both types of trust and were generally stronger predictors than personal attributes. Moreover, resources played a greater role than job demands in shaping both supervisor and management trust. Among the demands, only role conflict was a significant negative predictor of supervisor trust and management trust. Instrumental communication, job autonomy, and job variety were significant positive predictors of supervisor trust. Job autonomy and job variety both had significant positive associations with management trust.

The combination of measuring performance and giving feedback creates tension between formative and summative purposes of progress evaluations and can be challenging for supervisors. There are conflicting perspectives and evidence on the effects supervisor-trainee relationships have on assessing performance. The aim of this study was to learn how progress evaluations are used in postgraduate education with longitudinal supervisor-trainee relationships. Progress evaluations in a two-year community-pharmacy specialization program were studied with a mixed-method approach. An adapted version of the Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists (CanMEDS) framework was used. Validity of the performance evaluation scores of 342 trainees was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Semi-structured interviews were held with fifteen supervisors to investigate their response processes, the utility of the progress evaluations, and the influence of supervisor-trainee relationships. Time and CanMEDS roles affected the three-monthly progress evaluation scores. Interviews revealed that supervisors varied in their response processes. They were more committed to stimulating development than to scoring actual performance. Progress evaluations were utilized to discuss and give feedback on trainee development and to add structure to the learning process. A positive supervisor-trainee relationship was seen as the foundation for feedback and supervisors preferred the roles of educator, mentor, and coach over the role of assessor. We found that progress evaluations are a good method for directing feedback in longitudinal supervisor-trainee relationships. The reliability of scoring performance was low. We recommend progress evaluations to be independent of formal assessments in order to minimize roles-conflicts of supervisors.

BACKGROUND: Trustful relationships play a vital role in successful organisations and well-functioning hospitals. While the trust relationship between patients and providers has been widely studied, trust relations between healthcare professionals and their supervisors have not been emphasised. A systematic literature review was conducted to map and provide an overview of the characteristics of trustworthy management in a hospital setting. METHODS: We searched Web of Science, Embase, MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Scopus, EconLit, Taylor & Francis Online, SAGE Journals and Springer Link from database inception up until Aug 9, 2021. Empirical studies written in English undertaken in a hospital or similar setting and addressed trust relationships between healthcare professionals and their supervisors were included, without date restrictions. Records were independently screened for eligibility by two researchers. One researcher extracted the data and another one checked the correctness. A narrative approach, which involves textual and tabular summaries of findings, was undertaken in synthesising and analysing the data. Risk of bias was assessed independently by two researchers using two critical appraisal tools. Most of the included studies were assessed as acceptable, with some associated risk of bias. RESULTS: Of 7414 records identified, 18 were included. 12 were quantitative papers and 6 were qualitative. The findings were conceptualised in two categories that were associated with trust in management, namely leadership behaviours and organisational factors. Most studies (n = 15) explored the former, while the rest (n = 3) additionally explored the latter. Leadership behaviours most commonly associated with employee's trust in their supervisors include (a) different facets of ethical leadership, such as integrity, moral leadership and fairness; (b) caring for employee's well-being conceptualised as benevolence, supportiveness and showing concern and (c) the manager's availability measured as being accessible and approachable. Additionally, four studies found that leaders' competence were related to perceptions of trust. Empowering work environments were most commonly associated with trust in management. CONCLUSIONS: Ethical leadership, caring for employees' well-being, manager's availability, competence and an empowering work environment are characteristics associated with trustworthy management. Future research could explore the interplay between leadership behaviours and organisational factors in eliciting trust in management.

BACKGROUND: The need for clinical placements outside traditional teaching hospitals for medical students is growing, both due to a decrease in hospital beds and the expansion of medical students. In this survey, distributed to supervisors at university and non-university hospitals, we investigated supervisors' self-perceived preparedness for the training assignment and searched for factors associated with self-perceived pedagogical knowledge and familiarity with the students' learning objectives. METHODS: A pilot survey was developed using results from qualitative studies regarding clinical supervision of medical students and included questions on the supervisors' education and preparation, if they were familiar with the students' learning objectives, self-perceived pedagogical knowledge, and characteristics of the learning environment. The pilot survey was tested on a smaller group of supervisors. The results from the pilot survey were used to develop an e-survey that was distributed to all hospital employed physicians in Region Västra Götaland. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 1732 physicians (response rate 43%). Among 517 respondents at the university hospital who reported activity as supervisor, 240 (46%) had attended preparatory supervisor training, 423 (82%) perceived enough pedagogical knowledge for the teaching assignment, and 391 (76%) reported familiarity with the learning objectives. The corresponding proportions at non-university hospitals were 159/485 (33%), 363/485 (75%), and 298/485 (61%), respectively (p ≤ .007 all through, compared to the university hospital). Perceiving that goal description and written information from the course management was sufficient for being able to complete the training assignment showed strong association with both self-perceived pedagogical knowledge and familiarity with the students' learning objectives. CONCLUSIONS: We found consistent differences between university and non-university hospitals with respect to the supervisors' self-perceived preparedness for the training assignment. Efforts to convey the learning objectives and support to clinical supervisors are crucial for supervision of students at non-university hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of trainee performance in the workplace is critical to ensuring high standards of clinical care. However, some supervisors find the task to be challenging, and may feel unable to deliver their true judgement on a trainee's performance. They may 'keep MUM' (that is, keep mum about undesirable messages) and fail to fail an underperforming trainee. In this study, we explore the effect of discomfort on assessors. METHODS: Using a survey method, supervisors of trainees in the Australasian College of Dermatologists were asked to self-report experiences of discomfort in various aspects of trainee workplace assessment and for their engagement in MUM behaviours including failure to fail. RESULTS: Sixty-one responses were received from 135 eligible assessors. 12.5% of assessors self-reported they had failed to fail a trainee and 18% admitted they had grade inflated a trainee's score on a clinical performance assessment in the previous 12-month period. Assessors who reported higher levels of discomfort in the clinical performance assessment context were significantly more likely to report previously failing to fail a trainee. The study did not reveal significant associations with assessor demographics and self-reports of discomfort or MUM behaviours. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals the impact of assessor discomfort on the accuracy of assessment information and feedback to trainees, including as a contributing factor to the failure to fail phenomenon. Addressing assessor experience of discomfort offers one opportunity to impact on the complex and multifactorial issue that failure to fail represents.

BACKGROUND: Mentorship has long since been acknowledged as an integral part of Neurosurgical training. The authors sought to evaluate the state of mentorship in Neurosurgical training in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: A 28-point questionnaire was sent to all neurosurgical trainees in the UK and Ireland via the British Neurosurgical Trainee's Association (BNTA), comprising 180 trainees. RESULTS: There were 75 responses (180 trainees on the mailing list, 42% response rate). Despite all respondents reporting it to be at least somewhat important to have a mentor, 16% felt they had no mentors. The mean number of mentors was 2.91 with 72% of respondents having more than 1 mentor. In terms of the content of mentorship relationships, 63% were comfortable discussing career related topics with their mentor to a high or very high degree but only 29% felt comfortable discussing their general wellbeing. With regards to allocated educational supervisors, 43% thought this person to be a 'low' or 'very low' source of mentorship. The three most important traits of the ideal mentor as reported by respondents were: someone chosen by them (48%), working in the same hospital (44%) and having received formal mentorship training (36%). CONCLUSIONS: The current perception of mentorship in Neurosurgery from the surveyed trainees is mixed. A healthy majority of trainees benefit from mentorship of some kind, whilst a significant minority feel underserved. The surveyed trainees feel mentorship is slanted more towards clinical and professional aspects of development than it is towards personal ones. Suggestions for future insight would be an evaluation of senior registrar and consultant sentiments towards mentorship, whilst exploration into more flexible models for establishing mentoring relationships may help to address the heavy importance of trainee choice which is voiced by this survey's results.

This study determined the relationship between mental distress and professional commitment among medical postgraduate students, and the roles of psychological capital as a mediator and the supervisor-postgraduate relationship as a moderator. This cross-sectional study recruited 836 medical postgraduate students from eight medical universities and the medical college of comprehensive universities in Guangdong Province, China. Participants were assessed through questionnaires, which covered demographic items, the supervisor-postgraduate relationship scale, the psychological capital questionnaire, the symptom checklist - 90 (SCL -90), and the professional commitment scale. We used descriptive statistics to describe demographics and mental distress and professional commitment scores. Pearson's analysis was used to identify correlations between the variables and the SPSS PROCESS macro was performed to confirm mediating and moderating effects of psychological capital and the supervisor-postgraduate relationship. Mental distress was negatively related with professional commitment (r = -0.262, p < 0.01) and psychological capital (r = -0.442, p < 0.01). Psychological capital was positively associated with professional commitment (r = 0.486, p < 0.01). The confidence interval (CI) suggested that psychological capital mediated the relationship between mental distress and professional commitment (95% CI, -0.198 to - 0.143), and the supervisor-postgraduate relationship had a moderate role between psychological capital and professional commitment (95% CI, 0.069 to -0.212). Hence, educators may refer to these findings to improve professional commitment level among medical postgraduate students.

OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to systematically examine supervisor-trainee differences in assessments of trainee competencies across domains and developmental stages. METHODS: Trainees and supervisors (N = 141 dyads) independently rated trainee performance at the end of placements using the Clinical Psychology Competencies Rating Scale. Based on the number of placement hours completed at the time competence was assessed, the 141 trainees were assigned to three developmental levels (61, 42, and 31 in the groups, respectively). Trajectories of 10 different competencies and trainee-supervisor differences for these competencies were examined across three developmental levels. RESULTS: Compared to their supervisor ratings, trainees underestimated their competence during early stages of training, with this discrepancy reducing at Level 2 and reversing into an overestimation at Level 3. Compared to their own ratings for overall competence, trainees rated Relational and Communication, Reflective Practice, and Professionalism domains as relative strengths, and rated their competence on assessment and intervention domains as relative weaknesses. CONCLUSION: Growth trajectories derived from supervisor assessments were much flatter than trajectories derived from trainee assessments. As predicted by the impostor theory of practitioner development, trainees significantly underestimated their competence early in training. The trend for trainees to overestimate their competence toward the end of their training is a potential concern that warrants further research.

Findings regarding the mechanism underlying the impact of supervisor incivility on subordinate alcohol misuse remain equivocal. Specifically, some studies indicate that stress mediates the impact of supervisor incivility on subordinate alcohol misuse, while others, find no evidence for such an effect, suggesting the need to investigate other mechanisms. Extending Conservation of Resource (COR) theory and employing a longitudinal study design, this study examines two alternative mechanisms grounded on social isolation. The first suggests drinking as a resource-mobilizing response, with social isolation eliciting the perception of more permissive injunctive drinking norms, thus facilitating problematic drinking. The second suggests problematic drinking as a mode of coping with a negative emotional state elicited by social isolation, namely depression. Findings indicate that supervisor undermining's association with subsequent subordinate problematic drinking is serially mediated by social isolation and depression, with no support found for the first mechanism. Implications for research, practice and policy are discussed.
