BACKGROUND: Palliative care requires a multidisciplinary team to assist patients and their families to obtain good quality care at the end of life. Typically, community pharmacists have fewer opportunities to provide services for patients with palliative care needs than hospital pharmacists. Moreover, home-based palliative care (HBPC) by pharmacists remains low and there is a lack of research regarding HBPC provided by pharmacists. Therefore, this study sought to understand the views and reflections of community pharmacists in the clinical frontline providing palliative home services. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recruit six community pharmacists for one-on-one, in-depth, semi-structured interviews and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Five major themes emerged: [1] Engagement, [2] Challenge, [3] Mission, [4] Career metamorphosis, and [5] Outlook. The pharmacists described how they engaged in HBPC and faced the challenges. They regarded opioid management as a burden. Moreover, some mentioned that reimbursement for palliative home care is low or non-profitable. They suggested building a platform to exchange advice and legislation adjustments so that they could pass on their experiences to less experienced pharmacists in HBPC. CONCLUSIONS: The involvement of pharmacists is crucial to provide better palliative care. Although the present study was small and might not fully represent the whole situation, the findings could still inform future education, training, and policy planning to promote pharmacists' participation in palliative care to generalise community palliative care.

Objective(s): We conducted a qualitative meta-synthesis of qualitative studies on nurses' experiences when caring for palliative patients to (1) identify the needs of nurses and (2) describe their experiences to provide more in-depth information. Methods: Qualitative articles published in English from 2000 to 2022 were identified from several databases through a searching strategy. Authors screened through the title, abstract, and full text of relevant studies. Articles were read repeatedly and discussed. The thematic analysis methodology was adopted to analyze the data. Results: Of 967 articles, 22 were included in our review. Notions reflecting community nurses providing palliative home care were clustered into four themes: (1) nature of community-based palliative nursing, (2) teamwork, (3) relationship with patient and family, and (4) resources. Findings also suggest establishing a sound support system, strengthening palliative education, and creating more decisive referral criteria and systems. Conclusions: The growing need for palliative home care has become challenging for community health care systems. Our study summarized various aspects of nurses providing home-based palliative care. The findings provide information for health care and education settings to improve home care systems and recruit more staff to meet the needs.

To date, more than 30 human peptides or proteins have been found to form amyloid fibrils, most of which are associated with human diseases. However, currently, no cure for amyloidosis exists. Therefore, development of therapeutic strategies to inhibit amyloid formation is urgently required. Although the role of some amyloidogenic proteins has not been identified in certain diseases, their self-assembling behavior largely affects their bioactivity. Human calcitonin (hCT) is a hormone peptide containing 32 amino acids and is secreted by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland in the human body. It can regulate the concentration of calcium ions in the blood and block the activity of osteoclasts. Therefore, calcitonin has also been considered a therapeutic peptide. However, the aggregation of hCT hinders this process, and hCT has been replaced by salmon calcitonin in drug formulations. Recently, iron oxide nanomaterials have been developed as potential materials for various applications owing to their high biocompatibility, low toxicity, and ease of functionalization. In this study, nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using a simple chemical coprecipitation method. We first demonstrated that dopamine-conjugated Fe3O4 inhibited hCT aggregation, similar to what we found when carbon dots were used as core materials in the previous study. Later, we continued to simplify the preparation process, that is, the mixing of dihydrocaffeic acid (DCA) and iron oxide NPs, to maintain their stability and inhibitory effect against hCT aggregation. Furthermore, DCA-decorated Fe3O4 can dissociate preformed hCT amyloid fibrils. This appears to be one of the most promising ways to stabilize hCT in solution and may be helpful for amyloidosis treatment.

Hospitals have played a leading role in providing palliative care in Taiwan as its care model has developed over the past few decades. However, earlier local studies in Taiwan showed that terminal patients prefer to die at home, highlighting the need to promote community-based palliative care instead of hospital-based care. Along with this shift, how community nurses provide palliative home care merits further exploration. This qualitative descriptive study aims to understand (1) how community nurses implement community-based palliative care, (2) what preparations are needed, and (3) what challenges they may face. Purposive sampling was used for recruiting nurses. We conducted one-on-one, in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Interview recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Eight community nurses with a range of experience in palliative home care were interviewed. Four major themes emerged: (1) Opportunities, (2) Qualifications, (3) Support, and (4) Commitments. Psychological preparedness, well-developed professional capabilities, external assistance, and peer support motivate community nurses to offer community-based palliative care. As the requests for palliative home care services increase, community nurses play a critical role in palliative home care. Although the sample size is small and the findings retrieved from a small number of experiences might not be generalized to every region, the study results could inform future experience-sharing and workshop sessions to train more nurses for community-based care, expanding service coverage, and providing optimal palliative care.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to directly alter the virus life cycle and virus-host interactions, and so are considered promising molecules for controlling virus infection. In the present study, we observed that miR-155 time-dependently downregulated upon dengue virus (DENV) infection. In contrast, exogenous overexpression of miR-155 appeared to limit viral replication in vitro, suggesting that the low levels of miR-155 would be beneficial for DENV replication. In vivo, overexpression of miR-155 protected ICR suckling mice from the life-threatening effects of DENV infection and reduced virus propagation. Further investigation revealed that the anti-DENV activity of miR-155 was due to target Bach1, resulting in the induction of the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)-mediated inhibition of DENV NS2B/NS3 protease activity, ultimately leading to induction of antiviral interferon responses, including interferon-induced protein kinase R (PKR), 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase 1 (OAS1), OAS2, and OAS3 expression, against DENV replication. Collectively, our results provide a promising new strategy to manage DENV infection by modulation of miR-155 expression.

Dengue virus (DENV) caused millions of infections around the world annually. Co-infection with different serotypes of DENV is associated with dengue hemorrhagic shock syndrome, leading to an estimate of 50% death rate. No approved therapies are currently available for the treatment of DENV infection. Hence, novel anti-DENV agents are urgently needed for medical therapy. Here we demonstrated that a natural product (2 R,4 R)-1,2,4-trihydroxyheptadec-16-yne (THHY), extracted from avocado (Persea americana) fruit, can inhibit DENV-2 replication in a concentration-dependent manner and efficiently suppresses replication of all DENV serotypes (1-4). We further reveal that the NF-κB-mediated interferon antiviral response contributes to the inhibitory effect of THHY on DENV replication. Using a DENV-infected ICR suckling mouse model, we found that THHY treatment caused an increased survival rate among mice infected with DENV. Collectively, these findings support THHY as a potential agent to control DENV infection.

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV), a common and widely spread arbovirus, causes life-threatening diseases, such as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. There is currently no effective therapeutic or preventive treatment for DENV infection. METHODS: Next-generation sequencing analysis revealed that prostasin expression was decreased upon DENV infection. Prostasin expression levels were confirmed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction in patients with dengue fever and a DENV-infected mice model. Short hairpin RNA against EGFR and LY294002 were used to investigate the molecular mechanism. RESULTS: Based on clinical studies, we first found relatively low expression of prostasin, a glycosylphosphatidyl inositol-anchored membrane protease, in blood samples from patients with dengue fever compared with healthy individuals and a high correlation of prostasin expression and DENV-2 RNA copy number. DENV infection significantly decreased prostasin RNA levels of in vivo and in vitro models. By contrast, exogenous expression of prostasin could protect ICR suckling mice from life-threatening DENV-2 infection. Mechanistic studies showed that inhibition of DENV propagation by prostasin was due to reducing expression of epithelial growth factor receptor, leading to suppression of the Akt/NF-κB-mediated cyclooxygenase-2 signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that prostasin expression is a noteworthy clinical feature and a potential therapeutic target against DENV infection.

Dengue virus (DENV) infection causes life-threatening diseases such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Currently, there is no effective therapeutic agent or vaccine against DENV infection; hence, there is an urgent need to discover anti-DENV agents. The potential therapeutic efficacy of lucidone was first evaluated in vivo using a DENV-infected Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) suckling mouse model by monitoring body weight, clinical score, survival rate, and viral titer. We found that lucidone effectively protected mice from DENV infection by sustaining survival rate and reducing viral titers in DENV-infected ICR suckling mice. Then, the anti-DENV activity of lucidone was confirmed by western blotting and quantitative-reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis, with an EC50 value of 25 ± 3 µM. Lucidone significantly induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) production against DENV replication by inhibiting DENV NS2B/3 protease activity to induce the DENV-suppressed antiviral interferon response. The inhibitory effect of lucidone on DENV replication was attenuated by silencing of HO-1 gene expression or blocking HO-1 activity. In addition, lucidone-stimulated nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which is involved in transactivation of HO-1 expression for its anti-DENV activity. Taken together, the mechanistic investigations revealed that lucidone exhibits significant anti-DENV activity in in vivo and in vitro by inducing Nrf2-mediated HO-1 expression, leading to blockage of viral protease activity to induce the anti-viral interferon (IFN) response. These results suggest that lucidone is a promising candidate for drug development.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Celastrol, a quinone methide triterpene isolated from the root extracts of Tripterygium wilfordii, can greatly induce the gene expression activity of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) to achieve disease prevention and control. HO-1 induction was recently shown to result in anti-HCV activity by inducing type I interferon and inhibiting hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3/4A protease activity. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the anti-HCV activity of celastrol and characterize its mechanism of inhibition. METHODS: The anti-HCV activity of celastrol was evaluated using the HCV subgenomic replicon and HCVcc infection systems. The anti-HCV mechanism of celastrol targeting HO-1 expression was clarified using specific inhibitors against several signaling pathways. The transcriptional regulation of celastrol on target gene expression was determined using promoter-based reporter activity assay. The synergistic effect of celastrol and a numbers of clinically used anti-HCV drugs was determined via a drug combination assay. RESULTS: Celastrol inhibited HCV replication in both the HCV subgenomic and HCVcc infection systems with EC50 values of 0.37 ± 0.022 and 0.43 ± 0.019 µM, respectively. Celastrol-induced heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) expression promoted antiviral interferon responses and inhibition of NS3/4A protease activity, thereby blocking HCV replication. These antiviral effects were abrogated by treatment with the HO-1-specific inhibitor SnMP or silencing of HO-1 expression by transfection of shRNA, which indicates that HO-1 induction contributes to the anti-HCV activity of celastrol. JNK mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) were confirmed to be involved in the inductive effect of celastrol on HO-1 expression. Celastrol exhibited synergistic effects in combination with interferon-alpha, the NS5A inhibitor daclatasvir, and the NS5B inhibitor sofosbuvir. CONCLUSION: Celastrol can serve as a potential supplement for blocking HCV replication. Targeting the JNK/Nrf2/HO-1 axis presents a promising strategy against HCV infection.

Dengue virus (DENV) is the leading mosquito-transmitted viral infection in the world. With more than 390 million new infections annually, and up to 1 million clinical cases with severe disease manifestations, there continues to be a need to develop new antiviral agents against dengue infection. In addition, there is no approved anti-DENV agents for treating DENV-infected patients. In the present study, we identified new compounds with anti-DENV replication activity by targeting viral replication enzymes - NS5, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and NS3 protease, using cell-based reporter assay. Subsequently, we performed an enzyme-based assay to clarify the action of these compounds against DENV RdRp or NS3 protease activity. Moreover, these compounds exhibited anti-DENV activity in vivo in the ICR-suckling DENV-infected mouse model. Combination drug treatment exhibited a synergistic inhibition of DENV replication. These results describe novel prototypical small anti-DENV molecules for further development through compound modification and provide potential antivirals for treating DENV infection and DENV-related diseases.

Dengue virus (DENV) infects 400 million people worldwide annually. Infection of more than one serotype of DENV highly corresponds to dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, which are the leading causes of high mortality. Due to lack of effective vaccines and unavailable therapies against DENV, discovery of anti-DENV agents is urgently needed. We first characterize that Schisandrin A can inhibit the replication of four serotypes of DENV in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, with an effective half-maximal effective concentration 50% (EC50) value of 28.1 ± 0.42 µM against DENV serotype type 2 without significant cytotoxicity. Furthermore, schisandrin A can effectively protect mice from DENV infection by reducing disease symptoms and mortality of DENV-infected mice. We demonstrate that STAT1/2-mediated antiviral interferon responses contribute to the action of schisandrin A against DENV replication. Schisandrin A represents a potential antiviral agent to block DENV replication in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, stimulation of STAT1/2-mediated antiviral interferon responses is a promising strategy to develop antiviral drug.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is one of the important mediators of inflammation in response to viral infection, and it contributes to viral replication, for example, cytomegalovirus or hepatitis C virus replication. The role of COX-2 in dengue virus (DENV) replication remains unclear. In the present study, we observed an increased level of COX-2 in patients with dengue fever compared with healthy donors. Consistent with the clinical data, an elevated level of COX-2 expression was also observed in DENV-infected ICR suckling mice. Using cell-based experiments, we revealed that DENV-2 infection significantly induced COX-2 expression and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in human hepatoma Huh-7 cells. The exogenous expression of COX-2 or PGE2 treatment dose-dependently enhanced DENV-2 replication. In contrast, COX-2 gene silencing and catalytic inhibition sufficiently suppressed DENV-2 replication. In an ICR suckling mouse model, we identified that the COX-2 inhibitor NS398 protected mice from succumbing to life-threatening DENV-2 infection. By using COX-2 promoter-based analysis and specific inhibitors against signaling molecules, we identified that NF-κB and MAPK/JNK are critical factors for DENV-2-induced COX-2 expression and viral replication. Altogether, our results reveal that COX-2 is an important factor for DENV replication and can serve as a potential target for developing therapeutic agents against DENV infection.

High-intensity nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) permeabilize cell membranes. Although progress has been made toward an understanding of the mechanism of nsPEF-induced membrane poration, the dependence of pore size and distribution on pulse duration, strength, number, and repetition rate remains poorly defined experimentally. In this paper, we characterize the size of nsPEF-induced pores in living cell membranes by isosmotically replacing the solutes in pulsing media with polyethylene glycols and sugars before exposing Jurkat T lymphoblasts to 5 ns, 10 MV/m electric pulses. Pore size was evaluated by analyzing cell volume changes resulting from the permeation of osmolytes through the plasma membrane. We find that pores created by 5 ns pulses have a diameter between 0.7 and 0.9 nm at pulse counts up to 100 with a repetition rate of 1 kHz. For larger number of pulses, either the pore diameter or the number of pores created, or both, increase with increasing pulse counts. But the prevention of cell swelling by PEG 1000 even after 2000 pulses suggests that 5 ns, 10 MV/m pulses cannot produce pores with a diameter larger than 1.9 nm.

AIMS: Previously, we reported an association between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), older age, and poorer prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms underlying this association. METHODS AND RESULTS: Transfection of HL cell lines with EBV latent membrane protein-1 (LMP1) resulted in up-regulation of many cytokine genes as assessed by the use of oligonucleotide microarrays. The up-regulation of cytokines was validated by using an inflammatory cytokine protein array: macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-1ß, and interleukin (IL)-13. Immunostaining of HL samples (n = 104) showed that expression of MIP-1α, MIP-1ß and IL-13 correlated with EBV infection and LMP1 expression. Combined expression of these cytokines was more common in patients aged >60 years (P < 0.001), and was associated with a poorer prognosis (P = 0.042). In another cohort, serum levels of MIP-1α, MIP-1ß and IL-13 were increased in HL patients (n = 53) and highest in EBV-positive HL patients as compared with healthy controls (n = 40). Xenograft mice injected with EBV-positive HL cells had higher serum levels of MIP-1α, MIP-1ß and IL-13 than mice injected with EBV-negative HL cells, although there was no difference in growth. CONCLUSIONS: EBV infection appears to promote the release of cytokines in HL patients, and negatively impacts on patient survival. Physiological immunosenescence probably explains the association between EBV infection and older age. Cytokine modulation is a potential therapeutic target for EBV-positive HL patients.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Tripterygium wilfordii (lei gong teng; Thunder of God Vine), a member of the Celastraceae family, is a medicinal plant used to treat a range of illnesses. Celastrol is a quinone methide triterpene and the most abundant bioactive constituent isolated from the root extracts of T. wilfordii. Previous studies have shown that celastrol exhibits antiviral activity against HIV and SARS-CoV. To date, no investigations of the anti-DENV activity of celastrol have been reported. This work aimed to investigate the anti-DENV effect and possible mechanism of celastrol in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: A four-serotype DENV infection system was performed to determine the anti-DENV effect of celastrol by detecting DENV RNA replication and protein synthesis. The precise anti-DENV replication mechanism of celastrol was clarified using specific RNA silencing and specific inhibitor. In addition, the therapeutic efficacy of celastrol was evaluated by monitoring survival rates and clinical scores in a DENV-infected Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) suckling mouse model. RESULTS: Celastrol inhibited DENV-1, -2, -3, and -4 RNA replication with EC50 values of 0.19 ± 0.09, 0.12 ± 0.11, 0.16 ± 0.14, and 0.17 ± 0.08 µM, respectively. This antiviral effect of celastrol was associated with celastrol-induced interferon-α (IFN-α) expression and was attenuated by a specific inhibitor of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway downstream of IFN-α or specific shRNA. Furthermore, celastrol protected ICR suckling mice against life-threatening DENV infection. CONCLUSION: Celastrol represents a potential anti-DENV agent that induces IFN-α expression and stimulates a downstream antiviral response, making the therapy a promising drug or dietary supplement for the treatment of DENV-infected patients.

The progression of liver fibrosis, an intrinsic response to chronic liver injury, is associated with hepatic hypoxia, angiogenesis, abnormal inflammation, and significant matrix deposition, leading to the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Due to the complex pathogenesis of liver fibrosis, antifibrotic drug development has faced the challenge of efficiently and specifically targeting multiple pathogenic mechanisms. Therefore, CXCR4-targeted nanoparticles (NPs) were formulated to deliver siRNAs against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) into fibrotic livers to block angiogenesis during the progression of liver fibrosis. AMD3100, a CXCR4 antagonist that was incorporated into the NPs, served dual functions: it acted as a targeting moiety and suppressed the progression of fibrosis by inhibiting the proliferation and activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). We demonstrated that CXCR4-targeted NPs could deliver VEGF siRNAs to fibrotic livers, decrease VEGF expression, suppress angiogenesis and normalize the distorted vessels in the fibrotic livers in the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced mouse model. Moreover, blocking SDF-1α/CXCR4 by CXCR4-targeted NPs in combination with VEGF siRNA significantly prevented the progression of liver fibrosis in CCl4-treated mice. In conclusion, the multifunctional CXCR4-targeted NPs delivering VEGF siRNAs provide an effective antifibrotic therapeutic strategy.

Dengue virus (DENV) is a severe mosquito-borne viral pathogen. Neither vaccines nor antiviral therapy is currently available to treat DENV infection. Nucleoside inhibitors targeting viral polymerase have proved promising for the development of drugs against viruses. In this study, we report a nucleoside analog, 2'-C-methylcytidine (2CMC), which exerts potent anti-DENV activity in DENV subgenomic RNA replicon and infectious systems, with an IC50 value of 11.2±0.3µM. This study utilized both cell-based and cell-free reporter assay systems to reveal the specific anti-DENV RNA polymerase activity of 2CMC. In addition, both xenograft bioluminescence-based DENV replicon and DENV-infected Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) suckling mice models evaluated the anti-DENV replication activity of 2CMC in vivo. Collectively, these findings provide a promising compound for the development of direct-acting antivirals against DENV infection.

BACKGROUND: This study was to investigate the prescribing patterns for antipsychotic drugs in elderly hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or dementia at a psychiatric hospital in Taiwan from 2007 to 2012. This study also explored the predictors of antipsychotic polypharmacy (APP). METHODS: We collected patients' demographic data, including year of admission, age, gender, and length of hospital stay, and drug-related information. RESULTS: Second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) monotherapy was the most common type of therapy in both those with dementia and with schizophrenia, and quetiapine and risperidone were the most commonly prescribed drugs for these conditions, respectively. In late-life schizophrenia, 33.8% of the patients used first-generation antipsychotics (FGA) alone. Regarding APP, a combination of FGA and SGA and combinations of SGA were most commonly noted in schizophrenia patients and dementia patients, respectively. Overall, APP increased from 2007 to 2012. It was significantly more common in patients with dementia (odds ratio: 3.49, 95% confidence interval: 1.29-9.39, P = 0.014), less concurrent use of hypnotics and sedatives (odds ratio: 0.41, 95% confidence interval: 0.17-0.99, P = 0.046), and a higher-than-recommended dose of antipsychotic drugs (odds ratio: 4.98, 95% confidence interval: 2.75-9.02, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: FGA are still commonly used for the late-life schizophrenia at our hospital. Given their potentially hazardous side effects, FGA must be employed with caution. The use of APP involving SGA increased over the 6 years of the study period, especially among patients with dementia. However, the use of SGA in dementia began to decline after the US Food and Drug Administration's 2005 warning about SGA being associated with increased mortality in dementia patients, which contrasts with the trends examined in this study. Further controlled trials exploring the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of APP in this population are warranted to gain an additional insight into this practice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatocyte-like cells, differentiated from different stem cell sources, are considered to have a range of possible therapeutic applications, including drug discovery, metabolic disease modelling, and cell transplantation. However, little is known about how stem cells differentiate into mature and functional hepatocytes. METHODS: Using transcriptomic screening, a transcription factor, liver X receptor α (NR1H3), was identified as increased during HepaRG cell hepatogenesis; this protein was also upregulated during embryonic stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation. RESULTS: Overexpressing NR1H3 in human HepaRG cells promoted hepatic maturation; the hepatocyte-like cells exhibited various functions associated with mature hepatocytes, including cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme activity, secretion of urea and albumin, upregulation of hepatic-specific transcripts and an increase in glycogen storage. Importantly, the NR1H3-derived hepatocyte-like cells were able to rescue lethal fulminant hepatic failure using a non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficient mouse model. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found that NR1H3 accelerates hepatic differentiation through an HNF4α-dependent reciprocal network. This contributes to hepatogenesis and is therapeutically beneficial to liver disease.

In addition to the previous investigations of bioactivity of aqueous extract of the edible Gracilaria tenuistipitata (AEGT) against H2O2-induced DNA damage and hepatitis C virus replication, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential therapeutic properties of AEGT against inflammation and hepatotoxicity using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse RAW 264.7 cells, primary rat peritoneal macrophages and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute hepatitis model in rats. AEGT concentration-dependently inhibited the elevated RNA and protein levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2, thereby reducing nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 levels, respectively. Moreover, AEGT significantly suppressed the production of LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α. These inhibitory effects were associated with the suppression of nuclear factor-kappa B activation and mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphorylation by AEGT in LPS-stimulated cells. In addition, we highlighted the hepatoprotective and curative effects of AEGT in a rat model of CCl4-intoxicated acute liver injury, which was evident from reduction in the elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels as well as amelioration of histological damage by pre-treatment or post-treatment of AEGT. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that AEGT may serve as a potential supplement in the prevention or amelioration of inflammatory diseases.
